POSITRACTION: Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh provides free treatment

2015-Jun-14

The Logical Indian
Doctors are often equated with God, and that's for a reason.

*** begin quote ***

Nine-year-old Ragini was severely burned by lamp oil as a toddler. She lost range of motion in her neck due to injuries from the burn and was bullied in school. Watch as she and her family travel from their rural village to the city of Varanasi, where she undergoes a life-altering operation at G.S. Memorial Plastic Surgery Hospital.

Director and plastic surgeon Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh provides free treatment for over 80 percent of the patients he sees, many of whom are burn victims like Ragini.

"I earn a currency called love that is much more valuable than money" these are the words of this doctor who miraculously helped this girl and gave hopes to many.

The Logical Indian salutes Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh and entire medical community who are keeping humans and humanity alive on this earth.

This short video from Blue Chalk Media was produced on behalf of the charity wonderwork.org .This video is all about compassion especially in the noble field of medicine.

Every once in a while, one is “touched”.

Makes me wish I had been capable of going into medicine.

Or otherwise, receive such burdens.

All I can do is donate some modest amounts of money to charities and hope it makes a difference.

JEMAIL: Delaney, Gerard M. (MC1975) “Anathema sit”

2015-Jun-14

1. To quote Commander Scott, “It’s Green!"

2. If you go to a college belonging to a religious tradition, whether it’s Jewish, Mennonite, delaSalle or Rice Christian Brothers, or Jesuit, you have to expect to see their history blazoned on the campus. In our case, it is Pere delaSalle instructing a youth, and the Lourdes grotto. In the case of St. Louis, it is Pere deSmet (and i’m sure other Jesuit iconography, including the sainted Founder). If you don’t like it, I’m sure that there are other universities that do not display religious imagery, and emphasize the religious nature of their history and mission, their vision of the past, and of their future, that would be more than happy to take them as transfer students. Tell them, “Anathema sit” and dust them off of your hands.

Gerard ‘75

Delaney, Gerard M. (MC1975)

[JR: Laugh. It’s like these people are insane. It’s like going to a bar and demanding abstinence. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), aren’t we commanded to “love”? So you can’t “curse them”, but patiently treat them like the petulant crabby brats that they are. Eventually they will either “learn”, “grow up”, or “go away”. IMHO all equally acceptable. I like the Quaker and Amish for their tolerance. Thanks for reading and participating; it gets lonely here in Virtual Jasper Newsroom.]

Pat Petersen: A New York running legend

*** begin quote ***

Heard the stunning news of the way-too-soon passing of Long Island running legend Pat Petersen at age 55.

*** and ***

He was one of the guys I idolized during my early/competitive marathon days, in part because he was among the best around and in part because he was known for his ungainly upper-body form.

He was also a great runner at Manhattan College, back when their cross country teams were legendary in their greatness.

Welcome to my online world. I’m a publisher of academic books in economics and geography (the nonfiction side of my life) and a writer of mysteries (though I admit I also like the term “crime fiction”). My first cozy, The Outsmarting of Criminals, features Miss Felicity Prim, a book lover who believes that a lifetime of reading mysteries has prepared her for a new career in criminal outsmarting.

The Outsmarting of Criminals: A Mystery Introducing Miss Felicity Prim Hardcover – March 31, 2014by Steven Rigolosi (Author)

After being mugged in New York City, Miss Felicity Prim decides to leave the big city and purchase a home in the country, where she will be safe from the dangerous criminals who call New York home. A devoted reader of crime fiction, Miss Prim believes that her reading experiences have given her the skills required to become an amateur sleuth in her new home of Greenfield, Connecticut. She gets her chance to prove her mettle when she finds a corpse in her basement. As Miss Prim searches for the victim's identity and killer, she finds her father's old journals, which create a crisis in her family. Meanwhile, Miss Prim's young friend, Dolly, has become involved in a dangerous situation and needs Miss Prim's help. Can Miss Prim, with her insights into human behavior and her steadfast refusal to rely on forensics and databases (which she considers the crutches of lazy investigators), save the day and bring everything to a happy resolution? Of course she can.

Some of those schools had first introduced soccer in the 1920s. Shawn Ladda, a kinesiology professor at Manhattan College and an expert on the history of women’s intercollegiate soccer, says soccer was popular because of its low cost and emphasis on running. Rather than official games, the colleges engaged in “play dates.” Women from Bryn Mawr, Smith and Wellesley, for instance, would intermingle for a series of competitive games.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for three

2015-Jun-18

Good Afternoon All,

Nancy Maksomski asks for our Prayers. Nancy's Mom is having Hip Replacement Surgery tomorrow Friday, 6/19/15. We pray for complete and quick healing for Mrs. Maksomski, free of complications. Once her hip heals and the MDs feel she is better aligned, she will likely go in for some serious back surgery.

Nancy also asks for our prayers for her Dad, Dave. He is having some back problems that are weakening his legs. As Mr. Maksomski is the primary care giver for Mrs. Maksomski and Vice-Versa, we pray for quick healing for both of them and that Dave's back problem is transitory.

In April, Nancy asked for our prayers for an old and dear Family friend, Sister Marcella Sullivan who at that time was diagnosed with Liver Cancer and given 3 to 6 months to live. Sister has been moved to Calvary Hospital as her condition has deteriorated. Sister Marcella is a Fellow Jasper, who like many of the Presentation Nuns, attended Manhattan College graduating in 1954. She taught the poor for many years in New Orleans and in the 1980s she became a Nurse and a Pastoral Minister in Westchrster County. Sister has shared wirh Nancy that she is ready to go home. We pray that when she is called, it be peaceful, as she is taken into God's Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Thank you. God Bless.

MFOUND: Manhattan College engineering student wins a scholarship

https://dagherengineering.wordpress.com/2015/05/20/dagher-engineering-puts-money-where-mouth-is-awards-2500-scholarship-to-manhattan-college-engineering-student/

Posted on May 20, 2015
NEW YORK, May 20, 2015 – Yesterday, at an event that brings New York’s elite Professional Engineers of present and future together, Dagher Engineering, PLLC awarded a $2,500 scholarship to a Manhattan College engineering student, Nicholas Adamo.

The Metropolitan Region Membership Meeting, held annually since 2002 by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC NY), allows ACEC member firms to generously make scholarships available to engineering students attending New York State colleges and universities.

Dagher Engineering was one of nine ACEC member firms at yesterday’s luncheon presenting a scholarship to students working tenaciously toward a civil engineering degree. Mr. Adamo has shown nothing but dedication to his engineering pursuit through his active membership with organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Construction Management Association of America, and the New York Water Environment Association. He also received immense praise from Manhattan College’s Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dr. Hossain Azam.

Elias Dagher, Founding Principal and CEO of Dagher Engineering, took a vested interest in Mr. Adamo’s plans to pursue his master’s degree while they spoke. “It’s important to teach young engineers that learning doesn’t stop once you finish school. It continues throughout your career,” said Dagher. “This is an important program because it promotes education and the field of engineering. The staff at Dagher Engineering is always working to learn new technology and stay ahead of trends. “

Student noise the tip of the iceberg
Posted 5/14/15

To the editor:

I applaud James O’Connor’s appeal to the neighbors to partner in reducing noise from Manhattan College students (“Let’s partner in reducing noise,” May 7). As a neighbor who has been very active in organizing and speaking out about the situation, my perspective has always been that we are sharing the neighborhood with these students, most of whom are very reasonable, polite and engaging when they are sober. At their age they are hardwired to be playful, loud, impulsive and somewhat oblivious to the local residents, as were many of us at that age. Part of their education is to help them transition from the self-centered world of adolescence and become more integrated, productive and contributing members of a larger community.

However, we are not doing them a favor by winking and looking the other way, buying into the “unspoken rule” that living near a college means putting up with screaming curses and inappropriate rants right outside first floor residential windows at 3 a.m. It is a far greater disservice to them to silently clean up their discarded beer cans, liquor bottles red cups, pools of vomit and the occasional condom wrapper than to hold them accountable to a basic level of mutual respect.

JFOUND: Badding, John [MC1984] PSU Faculty Scholar Medal

2015-Jun-19

http://news.psu.edu/story/361032/2015/06/18/academics/john-badding-awarded-faculty-scholar-medal-outstanding-achievement

John Badding awarded Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement
June 18, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- John Badding, professor of chemistry and physics at Penn State, has been selected to receive the 2015 Penn State Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Physical Sciences. Established in 1980, the award recognizes scholarly or creative excellence represented by a single contribution or a series of contributions around a coherent theme. A committee of faculty peers selects candidates after reviewing nominations together with outside evaluations from peer institutions.

Badding is a materials and solid-state chemist whose research focuses on using high pressures to synthesize or characterize microscale and nanoscale materials. Because of their unusual properties and unprecedented chemical structures, these materials have applications in telecommunications, in photovoltaic solar technology and in high-strength materials. Badding investigates the properties and potential applications of high-pressure supercritical fluids -- hybrids that share the properties of liquids and gases. His work with optical fibers synthesized at high pressure has the potential for technological impact by creating tunable infrared lasers with unprecedented power, fiber-based electronic devises and solar fabrics. Recently, Badding and his research team developed a new form of carbon nanotube -- diamond-like threads that they suspect may be stronger than conventional carbon nanotubes.

Badding's previous honors include a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship from 1993 to 1998 and a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1993. He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and holds several patents related to his research.

Badding earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Manhattan College in 1984 and a doctoral degree in chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. Prior to joining the Penn State faculty as an assistant professor of chemistry in 1991, Badding was a postdoctoral fellow at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington from 1989 to 1991. He became associate professor of chemistry at Penn State in 1997 and professor of chemistry in 2007. In addition, Badding became a professor of physics at Penn State in 2014.

HONORING COLONEL J. MATTHEW LISSNER
(Extensions of Remarks - June 17, 2015)
[Page E918]

From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [www.gpo.gov]

HONORING COLONEL J. MATTHEW LISSNER

______

HON. THOMAS MacARTHUR of new jersey in the house of representatives

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Mr. MacARTHUR. Mr. Speaker, I rise to pay tribute to Colonel J. Matthew Lissner of the United States Army Reserve. Colonel Lissner has served in all three components of the Army (Active, National Guard, and Army Reserve) for over 28 years. Currently he serves as the Congressional Legislative Liaison for the 99th Regional Support Command, stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Colonel Lissner will leave his post as a Legislative Liaison to join the faculty of the U.S. Army War College in August of this year. I am grateful for his life of service to the Army, and wish him well as he transitions into his new assignment in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

A career Infantry Officer, Colonel Lissner received his commission from the Officer Candidate School in 1988. His education includes a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education (Teaching) from Manhattan College in 1979, a Master of Arts in Exercise Physiology from Indiana State University in 1985, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2007.

Prior to assignment as a Legislative Liaison, Colonel Lissner held a wide variety of infantry assignments through battalion level, and a number of staff positions at higher commands such as the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Third U.S. Army, U.S. Joint Forces Command,
and I Corps. His combat deployments include Operation Just Cause (Panama), Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (Kuwait), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq).

Although he is a highly decorated Soldier with more than 28 years of service to his credit, perhaps his most notable accomplishments have occurred off of the parade field. For example, prior to beginning his military service, Colonel Lissner worked with severely mentally and physically handicapped children, taught Physical Education, and coached a variety of sports at the scholastic and collegiate levels.

A diverse individual, Matt's interests include all sports, camping, and hunting with his five great kids--Kaitlyn, MariPat, Jessie, Lanie, and Robert--without whose love and support none of his accomplishments would have been possible. It is only fair and proper to acknowledge their tireless support as he worked tirelessly on his assigned duties.

Let us thank them all for their sacrifices and wish them continued success in the future.

Dear f. John,

I sent the note below last week by replying to JJ distribution - but perhaps it got lost in "the ether"... I wouldn't want you to think that your devoted readers weren't paying attention to your questions and concerns...

Dear f. John,

Regarding your proposed switch from Yahoo to distribute JJ.

Frist - from your reply to Jasper Ferrara (a classmate - though I don’t think we knew each other..), please say it isn’t so, that there will come a day "when [you] can no longer do it"...

Second - Just give us instructions and this Jasper will adopt whatever distribution scheme is best for you.

Regarding Bill Donohue and “calling it as he sees it..." - sometimes I think Brother Bill could use some new glasses... He seems to see bigotry and anti-Catholicism behind any disagreement or legitimate criticism. I think that he is frequently an embarrassment to our Church.

Thanks, as always, for all you do as CIC...

(3) Anyone can shift to the “new” distribution mechanism at http://eepurl.com/NAy_D anytime. I’ll figure out how to push everyone over as we get to the end of the year. ENDNOTE: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) cites Portugal's drug policy

2015-Jun-20

[JR: Using Key West Lou’s blog post as a springboard.]

http://keywestlou.com/american-pharoah/

*** begin quote ***

I wrote this week’s KONK Life column yesterday. Got it out a day early. Don’t know where the energy came from.

The title is Portugal The Blueprint.

Portugal legalized drugs in 2001. All drugs. Even the real bad stuff like cocaine and heroin. Fourteen years later, the results are amazing. Drug problems significantly down in every area. Jails closing because there are not enough criminals to occupy them.

You will find the article interesting. Perhaps something the U.S. should consider. Read the column before you criticize my comment.

*** end quote ***

I am a little L libertarian and completely agree with you about ending the "(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs". It's a MEDICAL problem; not a legal problem.

My exemplar is Prohibition that created organized crime. (We got Prohibition because women regained the right to vote, but that it another rant.) Once Prohibition was repealed, there is no violence between Budweiser and Miller employees. And, "organized crime" had to move on to other prohibited substances.

Remember why Prohibition was repealed? Jury nullification.

Prosecutors could get a jury to convict any one of booze arrests; that's why they had to get Al Capone on Tax Evasion.

So regardless of what the Gooferment, the politicians, or the bureaucrats say, American Juries can put an end to this nonsense all by themselves. No victim; no crime. Sorry. A juron doesn't have to explain or even talk; just vote "not guilty" and this house of cards will come tumbling down. Argh!

What does an out of work Columbian drug lord do for a living?
