POSITRACTION: The Albanian code of honor, ‘besa’

Remembering Albania's help for Jews during WWII
By Nic Cavell

*** begin quote ***

Bujar Nishani, president of the Republic of Albania, did not visit Riverdale by chance.

Instead, the president confirmed, his decision to give a speech organized by Manhattan College’s Holocaust, Genocide, and Interfaith Education Center was “absolutely motivated” by a desire to strengthen ties between his country and the international Jewish community.

“For my country, the ties with Israel are a priority,” Mr. Nishani said after giving a May 7 speech at the college’s Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons.

Mr. Nishani’s address to a crowd of about 150, which included the permanent representative of Albania to the United Nations, members of the Albanian cabinet and local members of the Albanian community, focused on his country’s role saving Jews from Nazi persecution and genocide during World War II.

“There was no forceful expulsion of Jews in our country, either by the state authorities or by common people,” Mr. Nishani said of Albania, one of the only European countries that had more Jews at the end of the war than at the start.

“This typical and characteristic behavior is founded on the Albanian code of honor, ‘besa’,” he continued. “In daily life, it means to take care… [of] someone who is in trouble and need by offering him hospitality and defense.”

In the 21st century, Mr. Nishani argued, ‘besa’ was the foundation of Albania’s success as a multi-religious society.

I’m not impressed by what people say.

I’m fat old white guy Jasper injineer.

What you do counts a lot more. In fact, it’s everything. Don’t tell me platitudes. Be Mother Teresa. Then I’m impressed.

“Having more Jews at the end of the war than at the start.”

That’s impressive.

Not that Jews are like trophies, medals, or badges to be won. They are people with all the warts, flaws, and other disgusting human characteristics.

I have known Jews who’s whole lineages have been wiped out for the sole reason that they “cheered for the wrong team” or prayed to the wrong God.

Argh!

Dona Nobis Pacem

And, in this case, Alma Mater did well.

JNEWS: Farmer, Lindsey [MC2012] guest services manager at a Washington resort

Employers are recruiting freshly minted college graduates more intensively this spring and not just to be food servers, cashiers and call center representatives.

*** and ***

Despite the upturn, many recent college grads are still struggling. When she graduated from Manhattan College in 2012 with a degree in English and religion, Lindsey Farmer hoped to land a job as an administrative assistant and rise through the managerial ranks. But she repeatedly lost out to workers with experience in the field.

So she took a $10-an-hour job as a ticket seller at a dine-in movie theater near her hometown of Issaquah, Wash., eventually rising to assistant manager.

"Once you graduate with a bachelor's, you think you'll be at the top of the earnings pool," she says. "But then you realize it's not like in the movies."

Recently, Farmer landed a job as a guest services manager at a Washington resort, a gig she hopes will be a springboard to owning a hotel. But even that position, she says, didn't require a college degree and her employer placed more value on her experiences abroad.

"I definitely feel like I lost time," says Farmer, who earns $13.50 an hour and finally has health and 401(k) benefits. "I thought I'd have a house by now and would be taking amazing vacations."

About

My name is Erica Moore and I am a recent graduate of Manhattan College, where I received a B.A. in Journalism. My undergraduate classes focused on reporting and newswriting, editing, feature writing, mass media and popular culture, and international mass communication.

I am seeking employment or internship opportunities in the field of print or broadcast journalism.

With my schooling and internship experience, I believe I have the capability of being a great asset to many teams. I will incorporate the skills I have already learned to new experiences while learning as much as I can about my profession.

TAMPA, Fla. - ORAN, Algeria, Nov. 8, 1942, Operation Torch: “They blew holes in the ship ... I saw a shell hit a wall and tore some gears out. They even blew the turret off our boat,” said Pfc. John Quigley as he described his participation in the doomed allied landing attempt at Oran harbor.

*** and ***

He was from the Bronx. Quigley was born in 1919 in the Harlem section of New York.

By 1936, Quigley’s physical prowess soon made him an aspiring Olympic track star. Training with an Olympian, he entered Manhattan College in 1939 and joined the track team. He trained with some of the best athletes of his day. He was twice voted Most Valuable Player of the Senior Met AAU Championships. Quigley’s best track time was the quarter mile in 47.20 seconds, a track record not broken until 1954. Hoping to go onto the Olympics, Quigley ran track until war broke out. His accomplishments were put on hold, he was drafted in 1941 and he did not resume running until seven years later.

Drafted and sent to Camp Dix in New Jersey for basic training, Quigley was assigned to the First Armored Division. He spent six months training in the U.S., England and Scotland, and then shipped out for the invasion of North Africa.

Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany ordains four new deacons

POSTED: 05/25/15, 11:10 PM EDT | UPDATED: 2 HRS AGO 0 COMMENTS

*** begin quote ***

ALBANY >> Close to 300 clergy, religious, family, friends and well-wishers attended the ordination of four men as the newest deacons of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.

Three of four men ordained as deacons are preparing to eventually become priests of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. For the three of the four, now in their fifties, this religious life represents a second career.

This ceremony, celebrated by Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, was held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. In his homily, Bishop Scharfenberger said those committed in this way to Jesus Christ are “putting ourselves in the Lord’s hands as servants.”

*** and ***

The two men who have decided later in life to become priests include: Patrick Rice, of Loudonville who has been surrounded by deeply religious family members for most of his life. After 27 years in the commercial tire business he left to prepare for the priesthood.

*** and ***

Rice was born in Teaneck, N.J., and lived in River Edge, N.J., for most of his childhood. He is one of eight children born to Mary and Joseph Rice. His mom, now 91 lives in River Edge. His father died in 1991. His family includes brothers and sisters-in-law Greg and Carol Rice of Philadelphia, Michael and Kimberly Rice of River Edge, and John and Laquisa Rice of San Diego. He has four sisters: Kam of Teaneck, N.J.; Kathryn of Santa Fe, N.M., Maureen, and her husband, Greg, of River Edge, and Mary Jane, who became a member of Opus Dei at 18 years old, took vows, never married and has dedicated her life to Christ.

Rice, whose home parish is St. Pius X in Loudonville, is a graduate of Manhattan College.

He credits his parents as being influential regarding following a faith-filled life. His father was a permanent deacon in the parish where he grew up in New Jersey. As for his own decision to study for the priesthood, he said, “I just felt there was something missing in my life and realized when I entered the church doors I felt a sense of peace come over me and felt that was what was missing and knew then that I was being called.”

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two children

2015-May-26

Good Morning All,

I have just received a prayer request from Joaquin Pradas. We are asked to pray for Joaquin's Nephew's Daughter. This precious little girl is only 5 weeks old and was born wirh a defective heart. Olivia Aryn Pradas will be undergoing a very serious 6 hour operation on Wednesday, 5/27/15. Though the prognosis is good, it is a very serious operation and we need to raise the volume for Little Olivia and her parents. Joaquin and his Family thank each of you for your "Valuable Prayers."

I ask for your continued prayers for our Niece, Heather. Heather and her Mom, flew up from Virginia last week to Sloan Kettering in NY. Heather has been told that Chemo will not be effective against her Cancer. Effectively, there is nothing that can be done due to the amount/degree of Cancer in this young woman's body. As Joann, Heather's Mom, has said, " you cannot imagine the heartache we are feeling." Please keep the volume up as we continue to pray for the best. Please keep Heather's Husband and their two young children in your prayers as well.

Thank you. God Bless.

Why did you choose to become a Lasallian Volunteer?

I developed a passion for education during my undergraduate days at Manhattan College and sought to find a program where I could work with students, pushing them to reach their full potential. I specifically wanted to work with inner-city kids, and I wanted to be involved in a faith-based program. Lasallian Volunteers felt like the perfect fit for me. Now that I am finishing my second year of service, I feel like I was always meant to work towards the Lasallian mission. This program has challenged me in ways I never expected; it has pushed me to be my best self, and it has introduced me to some phenomenal kids and educators.

JFACEBOOK: DeLillo, Nick [MC1995] objects to NY POST calling Alma Mater "humble"

Ok. I get it. It's the NY Post. Regardless, the article reports that alumni from Bronx schools such as “Humble” Manhattan College and SUNY Maritime in Throggs Neck typically experience better earning power compared to Ivy Leaguers. You go ahead and keep bragging about your "superior" school while I pay for lunch.

Humble Manhattan College in Riverdale and unassuming SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck surpass all eight Ivy League schools at catapulting students toward financial success, according to numbers-crunchers at the Brookings Institution.

JHQ: Seven Seniors take the road less traveled

2015-May-29

http://manhattan.edu/news/seven-seniors-take-positions-service-and-faith-after-graduation

Seven Seniors to Take on Positions of Service and Faith after Graduation

Six students to take on year-long volunteer positions; one to enter Catholic seminary.

After graduating on May 17, seven recent Manhattan College graduates will embark on new service positions in a variety of roles. Three will join Lasallian Volunteers across the United States and other individuals will join Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Americorps, the Ameson Foundation and the Cathedral Seminary.

“While all of our students are going on to do great things after Manhattan College,” Lois Harr, director of Campus Ministry and Social Action said, “these seven students are taking a bigger leap to directly serve others. They have incorporated the Lasallian heritage and mission of the College to work toward the greater good.”

*** and ***

Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.), a chemical engineering major, will enter Cathedral Seminary where he will begin studies for the priesthood. A member of Manhattan’s track and field team, Paul was a mainstay on the MAAC All-Academic team throughout his career.

A most basic question I never thought to ask my father
Posted on October 8, 2013 by Jim McKeever

2015 May 28 momdadwedding

My mom and dad on their wedding day.

I was sharing some family history to a dear friend of mine, telling her how my dad had been forced to drop out of college after his father died.

“What was he going to study?” she asked.

I didn’t know. And realizing I didn’t know what my own father had hoped to do with his life has been bugging me ever since.

Growing up, all I knew was that he dropped out of Manhattan College after one year because his father had died after complications from prostate surgery. My dad moved back home to work and to help provide for his mother.

(I also remember hearing that his first job paid $5 a week. Yes, a week.)

He later served in the Army during World War II; I remember stories of him guarding German prisoners of war. He then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, married my mom and raised a family.

Those were the essential elements of my dad’s narrative, the Reader’s Digest version of his life I carried around in my head like a handy reference guide.

It wasn’t until my friend asked me about my dad’s plans that I realized there’s probably a lot I don’t know about him. At first I was embarrassed, a little ashamed that I had no idea what his hopes and dreams were.

Maybe, like so many 19-year-olds, he had no clue and was just trying to figure things out. I had plenty of years to ask him that question, but didn’t — I was too busy with my own plans, hopes and dreams, and the tedium of everyday life. My dad died 13 years ago.

So there’s a nagging empty feeling in that spot where I carry his memory with me. Live and learn, I guess, although sometimes too late.

ENDNOTE: Risk of developing dementia lowered by 30% by "magic"

2015-May-30

Agostinho, Marcos [MC1996] shared this link:

Doctors urged to promote exercise
By Press Association
Published: 19:10 EST, 12 February 2015 | Updated: 19:10 EST, 12 February 2015

Billions of pounds spent on the NHS could be saved if people did 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week, the report said.

The risk of breast cancer could be reduced by as much as 25%, while the chances of getting bowel cancer could be lowered by as much as 45%.

Heart disease could be cut by 40%, while the risk of developing dementia could be lowered by 30%, the same percentage as stroke.

The report followed analysis of more than 200 separate pieces of research, including studies that found that 80% of obese patients had never discussed their weight with their GP and that twice as many deaths were due to inactivity than were due to obesity on its own.

It is estimated that half the population do not do enough exercise, while less than a third of the over-65s do so.

*** end quote ***

Thanks to our fellow Jasper for catching this piece of “cheap” advise.

The poor man’s gym — go for a walk.

That reduced risk of dementia is for me. The only thing I have going for me is my "charm"! :-)

Seriously, I bought a fitbit so that my niece-in-law wouldn’t be at the bottom of her “friends” list of step counts. I don’t mind being the “designated loser” for a good cause.

So first day out, in a fit of typical fat old white guy Jasper injineer, I say to myself: “what’s so hard about the walking <synonym for excrement> anyway”. The device comes set at a daily goal of 10k steps. (Notice that is NOT 10k in kilometers, but 10k in steps — however long or short your step is.) “Piece of cake”!

Not so much.

After walking a mile per day in the company garage at lunch time when I was working, did NOT seem like much.

I did 10k but strained my knee. Then next day I tripped and fell.

Time to reconsider that plan.

So, I dialed back the goal from 10k to 4k. And, started slower.

After two weeks, I can report that both the Fitbit, the iPhone app Human, and the iPhone app Moves can’t agree on exactly what I am accomplishing. But, I know it’s somewhere in there.

Another week of 4k and I’ll raise it to 5k.

Why am I making this an endnote and why should you really care, I don’t know. But it seemed like good advice and, before I tried it, I’d have sluffed it off as “are u talkin 2 me?”

Anyway, hope it helps.

Thanks to Jasper Marcos
