POSITRACTION: From Tents to Modular Solar Shelters

IKEA to Upgrade 10,000 Refugee Family’s Tents to Modular Solar Shelters
by Good News Network - April 13, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Fortunately, the IKEA Foundation has teamed up with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to design the “Better Shelter,” which is safer, sturdier, easy to transport and assemble, and can house five people at a time. It boasts built-in solar panels that can charge batteries and power four hours of LED lighting at night, and can better protect its inhabitants from rain, heat, and wind for up to three years — six times longer than the lifespan of tents used in many refugee camps today.

After two years of design work and testing them with 40 refugee families in Ethiopia and Iraq, Better Shelters and IKEA announced plans to produce 10,000 of them starting this year.

*** end quote ***

Amazing that no one else thought of this?

We can make things better for our fellow man.

Maybe these can be used instead of FEMA trailers?

I guess I’ll have to go buy something at IKEA now.

But my last “adventure” assembling a desk did NOT go so well.

Erin Woodhams
Director of Admissions & Marketing - Lincoln Park

Erin Woodhams

I am thrilled to join the team at the British School of Chicago – Lincoln Park and am excited about being part of a vibrant international community of learners and educators.

After receiving a B.A. in psychology from New York University and a M.S. Ed. from Manhattan College, I spent eleven years working in the New York City independent schools in admissions and communications. My most recent post was the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for a Nursery–Grade 8 independent school on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. During my time in New York I served on the board of trustees for the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY) as the communication chair. My family and I relocated to Chicago, my hometown, in April 2014 and I began consulting for School Choice International, helping families relocating to the Chicago area find a good fit school for their children.

Teaching to provide the whole child with the inspiration, support and desire to become life-long learners and individuals who will make a difference in the world is clearly a priority in the British School of Chicago. I have already witnessed a joy of learning buzzing through the classrooms as each student is working towards their own personal goals as well as collaborating with their peers.

I have two young boys, Oliver and Luke, who keep me busy in my free time. We spend a lot of time outdoors, when possible, going on adventures in the neighborhood or walking our chocolate Lab. We enjoy going to Maine in the summer to swim, hike and boat as well as visiting my husband’s family in the UK whenever possible. We love entertaining so large dinner parties with lots of friends and family visiting our home is a weekend staple, good food and good conversation!

MOBIT: Ferrante, Raymond Paul [MCattendee RIP]

2015-Apr-26

RAYMOND FERRANTE
1946 - 2015 | Obituary

Raymond Paul Ferrante Decorated combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam War with 101st Airborne and Air America; personal pilot to Donald Trump, 68

Raymond Paul Ferrante of Long Valley, N.J., died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 18, 2015. He was 68 years old.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Ferrante residence on May 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. The funeral will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. For online condolences and information, visit williamjleberfh.com.

Raymond was born on Nov. 4, 1946, in the Bronx, N.Y., to Marie (nee Morel) and Ugo Ferrante; they predeceased him along with his brother, Louis, and step-father, James Myers.

After two years at Manhattan College, Raymond joined the Army's 101st Airborne Division as a helicopter pilot, which would become both his lifelong passion and career, with over 25,000 flight hours. In Vietnam, he completed over 2,100 hours of combat flight time and received 48 Air Medals, three with valor, as well as a Bronze Star. He returned to Vietnam with Air America for three years, met his wife, Sherry, in Saigon, and then worked around the world in Iran, Mexico, the Arctic, Morocco, the Bahamas, and Saudi Arabia.

Raymond joined Trump Airlines in 1984 and later served as Donald Trump's personal pilot.

He retired from the N.J. National Guard in 2006 as a CW5 master chief warrant officer - the highest rank achievable by an Army warrant officer - with over 20 years of service.

A skilled carpenter and builder, and devoted lover of all things mechanical (especially classic cars), he passed away in the 1961 Chevrolet Corvette he meticulously restored piece by piece.

No man can be summed up in a single paragraph, least of all Raymond Ferrante. He was a true wealth of knowledge and possessed wisdom, wit, strength, work ethic, loyalty, and integrity that was apparent to all he encountered. Raymond will be remembered as an uncommonly generous and selfless man, never thinking of himself and always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be profoundly missed.

A beloved husband, father, son, and friend, he leaves behind a family bereft: his wife, Sherry, daughter, Nancy, and sons, James and Warren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his name are made to the Army Aviation Association of America, the NJARNG Yellow Ribbon Program, or a national veterans' charity of one's choosing.

[JR: Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. And, imho, VietNam interrupted many plans. It was a national tragedy for my generation — for those that went, stayed, or evaded. A good many of those who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities. PINEWOOD OR GREENLEAF?

Dear CIC,

During my stay at Manhattan College from 1976 to 1980, residents had several options when overwhelmed with thirst. Besides the Greenleaf and the Pinewood, there were also the Terminal and C & B’s on Broadway and there was a bar whose name I can’t remember just up the street from Overlook. In fact each spring there was a race held with each contestant having to stop at each bar for one cup of beer before moving on to the next bar. There was also Pauline’s and a couple of other places around 231st street. My freshman year the Greenleaf with it’s special of 5 cups of beer for $1 was the place to be. The Terminal introduced $2 pitchers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and became the place to be sophomore year. The Pinewood with its proximity to Broadway Joe’s Pizza was where we spent most of our time junior and senior year. The Pinewood had a lunch special ( a sandwich from the deli next door and two beers for $5) that beat anything on offer from the cafeteria by a mile. They also had free pizza from Broadway Joe’s on Sunday nights. When our intramural basketball team returned to play in the alumni league for a couple of seasons and actually won it one year, the Pinewood sprung for champagne for us. What a great place. So sorry to see it go.

Jean Elizabeth Fager

POWAY -- Jean Elizabeth (McGinty) Fager passed away April 24, 2015, at age 86, at Belmont Village Sabre Springs, due to complications of Alzheimer's.

Jean was born and raised in the Bronx New York. She graduated from Aquinas Catholic High School. Her cousin set her up on a blind date with John Fager, a soldier who had returned from the war and was attending Manhattan College. John and Jean were married in June, 1951.

In 1959 they moved to San Diego. With three young children, and Jean pregnant with their fourth child, they packed up the Plymouth station wagon and traveled across the country. They settled in the Clairemont/Bay Park area of San Diego.

Jean was an active member of St. Mary Magdalene Parish for over 45 years. She participated in almost every activity, club and group with the church and school. She spent her Sundays delivering communion to the ill and elderly. Jean also volunteered at Sharp Hospital.

The family spent their summers camping at National Parks. There are many family tales of being caught in floods, cornered by bears and Jean boiling diapers over a campfire. John and Jean traveled the world. Jean said many times that her life was bigger and more adventurous than she ever dreamed it would be.

John and Jean celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing in 2001.

In 2005, Jean moved to Poway to be closer to her daughter Barbara. She became a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and made new friends in the neighborhood. Jean dedicated her life to service of her family, her dear friends and her church. She loved caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, garden and home.

She is survived by her five children, Michael Fager, Pat Fager, Barbara Fager, Kathy Ashton, Bernadette Garzone, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass scheduled at St. Michael's, 15546 Pomerado Road, Poway, Friday, May 1, 2015, at 1 p.m. Contributions in Jean's name may be made to San Diego County Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org/sandiego/

Rachele Testa & Christian Schaefers
June 13, 2014 in New York, New York

Photography by
Maring Visuals

Rachele Testa and Christian Schaefers met over 10 years ago while attending Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. It was not love at first sight for the couple. They shared many mutual friends and would bump into each other at parties or around the Business School. They never truly knew one another or had any other feelings until Halloween 2006 when one of their mutual friends threw a Halloween bash.

Christian looked dapper as ever in a Phantom of the Opera costume and Rachele was a fierce kitty cat. The two locked eyes, that night, and he turned to her and said, "Hey girl, you look good tonight." Rachele saw him in a new light and the next day he called her to ask her out to lunch at Jakes Steak House. The two have been inseparable since.

After dating for six years, Christian proposed. Since the two were dating for so many years, Rachele had been imagining and anticipating her proposal forever! The two took a fabulous trip to Costa Rica for Thanksgiving in 2012 and Rachele for sure thought this was the trip. After the proposal did not happen on their vacation, she was totally bummed. Two days after the trip, Christian caught her off guard and proposed in their New York City apartment.

Rachele belonged to the Parish of St. Francis Xavier so she always knew it would be the place she would get married. For their reception, they had a specific vision in mind and wanted a raw loft space to fit their unique personalities. So, they choose Studio 450, in their hometown of Manhattan. The planning process was intense because they literally had to create the entire vibe and event aesthetic. They wanted to have a wedding that was modern yet chic, warm and romantic.

The wedding took place on Friday, June 13th. The weather was fickle with waves of rain and sunshine throughout the day. When Rachele left the hotel, on her way to St. Francis, the rain finally dissipated and everyone was smiling ear to ear as she arrived in a custom Angel Sanchez silk faille gown with embroidery from France.

To add to the vision, Rachele held a cascading orchid bouquet mixed with peonies and English roses. Her father was starting to get very emotional asking her over and over if she was “Ready.” She turned to him and said, “Dad, I love you, and now are you ready?” Finally, gulping down their emotions, they proceeded down the long aisle.

Rachele never took her eyes off of Christian, as she walked toward him. The ceremony was traditional Catholic. During their first kiss, Christian picked his bride up, sweeping her off her feet. The guests went wild, cheering and clapping. As they exited, it was completely down pouring; the newlyweds just froze and looked back at all their family and friends.

After their photographer took photos of them, the couple proceeded to Studio 450 for their robust cocktail hour. They decorated the venue with various arrangements in large black vases with dogwood, blueberry and eremurus as well as mirrored vases with peony, jasmine, English roses, clematis, geranium, oregano and Queen Anne’s lace creating a very chic yet organic floral scape. The colors they chose were white, taupe, silver, grey and black.

Guests enjoyed a five-tier cake custom-filled with banana and strawberry buttercream. The couple’s first dance was to John Legend’s “All of Me” with the last 2 minutes being the Tiesto mix. This set the tone for the entire evening. The couple’s motto was, “CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP.”

Rachele and Christian spent their honeymoon at The Gansevoort in Turks and Caicos and will be heading to Italy for part two in the fall.

Subject: Francine McGuire - she's OK! Praise Jesus!

Phil,

I wanted to share with you that my friend Francine has been doing well and is home with no damage from a stroke.

A little over a month ago, her father passed away. Fran had always, since a child, been the one to handle the affairs for her Italian immigrant parents. Well, as sick as she was feeling, she made sure her fathers funeral went without a hitch - arrangements etc. - but at the wake I could clearly see she needed help. I urged her (as well as her three kids) to "get mom's medicine" up in Mahopac while Fran stayed in the Bronx for the wake/funeral.

A few days after the burial, she had a heart attack. 49 years old. But God was good and she survived unscathed. No damage! Incredible. Praise Jesus!

Then this month, she still wasn't 100% and had been on anti-coagulants/blood thinners - this, along with medicine for her Lupus condition precipitated a stroke. Again, she survived with NO BRAIN DAMAGE.

I just wanted to say thanks for your prayers and update you since our meeting at Manhattan College.

She's got 3 great kids - 2 are finished college and her concern was her youngest who is going to the University of Philadelphia this fall. Her main concern most of her adult life was that they'd be ok - they are. But I told her "that doesn't mean you give up. You've got a lot of life to live yet" - I thank the Lord that he's granted her safe passage through this health crisis. I can't thank you enough for your prayers and the prayers of others.

Look forward to seeing you in a few weeks at the college.

God Bless,

Jim

MOBIT: Hegarty, Mary Ellen [MCspouse RIP] on 2015-Apr-05 reported 2015-May-01

2015-May-01

http://easthamptonstar.com/Obituaries/2015430/Mary-Ellen-Hegarty

Mary Ellen Hegarty
By Star staff | April 30, 2015 - 2:24pm

Mary Ellen Hegarty, who split her time between Glen Head and Montauk, died on Easter morning at home in Glen Head. She was 75 and had had cancer for over eight years.

She had lost sensation in her hands and feet a year and a half ago and began using a wheelchair or needing help to walk, but her spirits never dampened, her family said. At Christmas, they said, nothing, not even cancer, could keep her from shopping, and she managed to purchase a plethora of gifts for her 10 grandchildren.

Mrs. Hegarty and her husband, Michael J. Hegarty, bought a Leisurama home in Montauk in the early 1970s after falling love with Montauk while visiting friends. Their home in Montauk was filled with family, friends, and parties, from Christmas in July to Halloween in August, complete with trick-or-treating from bedroom to bedroom, her family said. The family had also re-enacted Hurricane Bob by shutting off the power and cooking the same meal they had eaten back in 1991.

Their grandchildren, all of whom survive, were the center of many of the couple’s activities, and a sign at their North Farragut Road house in Montauk read, “Careful, Grandparents at Play.” When Mrs. Hegarty lost her hair as a result of chemotherapy, the grandchildren proved their affection for her by hosting a Crazy Hat Party.

Born Mary Ellen Duggan on Dec. 6, 1939, to Helen and James Duggan, Mrs. Hegarty was raised in the Bronx. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament Academy.

Her husband was a student at Manhattan College when they met, her daughter, Ellen McDonald of East Hampton, said. Mr. Hegarty and his fraternity brothers used to joke by saying they were going to a dance with Mary Duggan as a code for going stag. At one particular dance, Mr. Hegarty met Mary Duggan, introduced her to his friends, and the rest is history. They were married on Jan. 26, 1963.

Mrs. Hegarty is survived by her husband of 52 years and her children, Michael Hegarty of Westbury, Brian Hegarty of Golden’s Bridge in Westchester, N.Y., and Ms. McDonald.

A wake was held earlier this month at the Whitting Funeral Home in Glen Head, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Glen Head. She was buried at the Locust Valley Cemetery.

Memorial donations have been suggested to Recanati/Miller Kidney Transplantation Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital, One Gustave L. Levy Place, Box 1049, New York 10029, or online.

JOBIT: Jarczynski, Sr. Helen [MC1973 RIP] on 2015-Apr 29

2015-May-01

http://www.scny.org/in-memoriam-sister-helen-jarczynski-sc/

In Memoriam: Sister Helen Jarczynski, SC

Sister Helen was a guiding spirit for her students and continued her relationships with them for many years.

Sr-Helen-Jarczynski-webSister Helen Regina Jarczynski (Sister Maria Francis) was born on February 27, 1922 in Manhattan, one of four girls and three boys of Francis and Katherine Gillon Jarczynski. Helen attended Saint Margaret of Cortona School and Saint Barnabas High School in the Bronx. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 7, 1940, and was followed by her sister, Virginia Catharine, in 1946. Sister Maria Francis received a BA in English from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, an MA in Counseling from Manhattan College, and New York State Certification in Education and Counseling.

Sister Helen’s early ministry was in elementary education. She taught first grade in Saint Francis Xavier and Ascension Schools in Manhattan before being missioned to the Bahamas in 1947. There she served as Headmistress of Sacred Heart and Saint Francis Xavier Schools. Sister Helen returned from the Bahamas in 1961 and was missioned to Saint Agatha Home in Nanuet as a teacher and a principal. She was then assigned to Saint Augustine School in the Bronx where she taught for seven years. From 1970 until 1990, Sister Helen served as the Math Lab Coordinator in Emerson Junior High School in Yonkers.

Sister Helen was a guiding spirit for her students and continued her relationships with them for many years. During the time she lived in Yonkers, Sister Helen was a member of a Sisters of Charity Committee that sponsored a “boat family” from Laos as they entered the United States. She worked tirelessly to help them adapt to their new way of life and was present to and for them, whether it was a trip to the supermarket or the doctor. Sister Helen remained in contact with the family over the years and recently attended the wedding of the youngest child. Upon her retirement from education, Sister Helen directed Saint Peter’s Parish Food Pantry in Yonkers, where volunteers packed and distributed bags of food three times a week.

From her earliest years, Sister Helen has been an innovative advocate for the poor. Her kindness, understanding and compassion will long be remembered by her many students and all those whom she served. Your work is now over, Sister Helen. Be at peace and enjoy the presence of your loving God whom you served so well.

Scandalous Commencement Honors Announced at Eight Catholic Colleges
April 22, 2015, at 1:33 PM  |  By Kimberly Scharfenberger

*** begin quote ***

At least eight Catholic colleges have announced scandalous speakers or honorees at their 2015 commencement ceremonies, according to The Cardinal Newman Society’s annual review of college graduations.

*** and ***

Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., will award an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and host former Senator George Mitchell as commencement speaker on May 17, despite his legacy of pro-abortion support.

*** and ***

Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Penn., will host Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter as the undergraduate commencement speaker and present him with an honorary degree on May 16. Earlier this year, Nutter officiated a ceremony granting marriage rights at Philadelphia City Hall to a same-sex couple— Israeli diplomat Elad Strohmeyer and his partner.
