POSITRACTION: Gilberto Bosques Saldivar -- why have we never heard of him?

2015-Mar-15

Gilberto Bosques Saldivar
by Accidental Talmudist

*** begin quote ***

Gilberto Bosques Saldivar was a Mexican diplomat who saved 40,000 Jews and Spaniards from the Nazi and Franco fascist regimes.

*** and ***

Bosques sprang into action. He rented a castle and a summer camp in Marseilles, and maintained that the properties were part of the consulate and therefore Mexican territory under international law.Bosques began issuing visas to Jews, as well as Spaniards fleeing the fascist Franco regime. Bosques housed the refugees at his compound in Marseilles, and chartered ships to get them safely out of the country.Bosques issued visas to approximately 40,000 Jews and Spaniards. In the accompanying image, he writes one of those tickets to life.In 1943, Bosques, along with his wife, three children, and 40 members of the consulate staff were arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Germany for a year. They were released in 1944 after Mexican President Manuel Avila Camacho imprisoned German citizens in Mexico and then arranged a prisoner swap.

*** and ***

For courageously saving the lives of 40,000 people at great personal sacrifice, we honor Gilberto Bosques Saldivar as this week's Thursday Hero at Accidental Talmudist.

With thanks to Lily Izarraras Hamade

*** end quote ***

When Evil is confronted, it take great moral courage.

To have that courage never recognized in life is a disgrace to all of us.

I’m not sure I’d have the huevos muchos grande to act this way. But I pray I would.

James Wriley Jacobs
1923 - 2015

Mr. James Wriley Jacobs passed away peacefully at his home, March 14, 2015. He was born July 25, 1923 son of Normal Bliss Jacobs and Roberta Columbia King Jacobs. James Wriley was a lifelong resident of his beloved home town of Gaithersburg and enjoyed sharing stories and memories of his life in a small town. His family home, in Old Town Gaithersburg was built by his father and brothers. The Jacobs brothers ran the Wheelwright Shop near their homes on East Diamond Avenue where Jake often observed and listened as his father and uncles repaired and built wagons. Jake obviously learned by watching and listening for later in life Jake was quite the accomplished carpenter.

During Jake's early years, Gaithersburg was a bustling farming community. His father was the manager of Gaithersburg's Thomas and Company Canning Factory and his first job was helping his Dad cleaning the corn cutters.

He met his bride, Betty Jeanne King through Epworth United Methodist Church. The Church was located on Brooks Avenue where his mother Bertie and Betty Jeanne's mother Elizabeth were members. The church was the center of all their lives at that time – both spiritually and socially. So, it was not unusual that Jake and Betty Jeanne would reconnect after World War II.

James Wriley played sports throughout his elementary and high school days and after the war became a physical education teacher in the Montgomery County Public School System. But, before his career started, he was called to service while attending Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. He met many of lifelong friends there including Kenneth Studley and Authur Spaulding. Jake was drafted in the US Infantry to active duty during the European Theater of Operations with the 89th Infantry Division 353rd Regiment, Company L, as a Combat Platoon Leader and as Personnel Officer Special Services Staff Sections of General Mark Clark. He was released from active duty July 1946 as a First Lieutenant. After the war, Betty Jeanne and Jake were married in 1947. Jake retired from MCPS as Associate Superintendent and then worked in the family business until his second retirement.

Jake was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School, Green Mountain College and Manhattan College. He attended George Washington University where he majored in Education and earned his Doctorate degree in that field.

James Wriley, was an active member of his community and served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Epworth United Methodist Church, the Gaithersburg Rotary Club, Gaithersburg Lions Club and served as a Director, Trustee or Board Member of the following: Save the Children Federation; Montgomery County Library Board; American Red Cross, Montgomery County Chapter; The Washington Ear; Montgomery General Hospital, First Montgomery Bank and Green Mountain College.

In the 1990's James Wriley decided to write his biography which was published in 2014. Memories of a Small Town Boy is now circulating throughout the community to family and friends.

In addition to his wife Betty Jeanne, he is survived by his children, daughter, Betsy J. Rippeon and husband David, son James Wriley Jacobs, Jr and wife Peggy, and son Mark Jacobs, and Sally Jacobs. Eight grandchildren: Jonathan Rippeon and wife Michelle, Michael Rippeon and wife Deanna, Brian Jacobs and wife Ashley, John Jacobs and wife Emily, Caroline Horowitz and husband Ari, Courtney Jacobs, Jessica Bartlett and husband Brian, and Tyler Jacobs. Great Grandchildren: Jake Rippeon, Andrew Rippeon, Jackson Rippeon, Grady Rippeon, Maddie Rippeon, Allie Rippeon, Sara Kate Rippeon, and Landon Jacobs

James Wriley was preceded in death by his sister Hazel Jacobs Jones and his brother Norman B. Jacobs.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers Tom Durkin, Donnie Lynch and Comfort Home Care for their loyalty and compassion for without their assistance homecare would not have been possible.

Funeral services will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, 9008 Rosemont Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877, Monday March 23rd at 11:00 a.m., concluding with graveside services at Forest Oak Cemetery. Reverend Gerard Green, Jr. and Pastor Jennifer Fenner will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to James W. Jacobs Scholarship Fund, c/o Gaithersburg High School, 314 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg 20877, or to Epworth United Methodist Church 9008 Rosemont Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877.

Last night was watching the NCAA seeds. I have no Syracuse to pull for. However, my undergraduate school made it. Manhattan College. A small Catholic college at the north end of New York near the Yonkers border.

Manhattan has a tough roll. They must play their way in. They first must beat Hampton. Their reward for winning is Kentucky. Number 1 and number 16 facing each other.

Manhattan’s coach is Steve Masiello. Played college ball for Louisville as a walk on. Got to two Final Fours, one won. Thereafter, he was an assistant coach to Rick Pitino at Louisville for six years.

MY COMMENTS TO THE WORLD AT LARGE

Back at the ranch after a disappointing trip to the "First Four". Argh! Sadly, I think the Jaspers were beaten when they were seeded -- both as MAC champ to play in and as fodder for the KY #1 seed. My analysis of the game was that when Hampton ran off 7 quick ones, they were never able to catch up. Some really questionable calls went against them. And, my pet peeve, when they played good defense and we going to get a turnover -- change of possession was imminent, two coach called timeouts and one player called time out, saved the turnover. Credit the H coach for calling timeout late in the second half, when two of the H players were losing their composure. Last spurt was just too little too late. Argh! "Once in a lifetime". (Ticket was 62.50? AND 10 to park. Argh!)

FROM Sweeney, Peter K. (MC1964)

Argh Squared.

Agree that officiating was dreadful in that the Zebras allowed play to get much too physical. Hampton is not that good. Our seniors were flat out awful. If MC had played a game like that in any round of the MAAC tournament, we would have lost just as badly. I was on campus Sunday evening for the Selection party with the team. When CBS posted that we were in a play-in game for right to meet Kentucky, the air was sucked out of the room. I think it hurt our Coach as well since it seemed like selection committee set up a situation where his resume issue and subsequent belated graduation from Kentucky would become a front page story again this year.

JOBIT: Meade, Thomas Francis [MC1956 RIP]

2015-Mar-18

http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Thomas-Meade&lc=5097&pid=174426462&mid=6366815

In Memory of
Thomas Francis Meade
Obituary

Meade, Thomas Francis. Age 80 on March 14. Passed peacefully on March 14 surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born on September 17, 1934 and raised in Bellerose, NY. He was the youngest of six children born to Kathryn and James Meade.

Tom was a long time resident of Brookville, NY, having served as President of the Brookville Taxpayers Association, as a volunteer firefighter in the Jericho Fire Department and as a lector for 40 years at St. Paul the Apostle Church – a parish he loved and helped to build.

Tom attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1956 with a BS. He began his career at Bankers Trust Company while earning an MBA from New York University. After working on the Municipal Bond desk at Smith Barney, Tom joined Bear Stearns as a talented and spirited fixed income salesman. He loved the bond business and was a passionate mentor to many young professionals heading to Wall Street. Ultimately retiring from Bear Stearns as a Senior Managing Director, Tom earned the respect and, most importantly, the friendship of customers, colleagues and competitors.

Tom loved, and was beloved by, his family and his friends. He would often regale them with stories of his shenanigans in school and stickball in the street. All who knew him were touched by his kindness, his generous spirit and his enormous heart. Tom was always an optimist and quick with an encouraging word whenever one was needed. Tom shared his time, talent and treasure with many charitable organizations.

Over the years, he served as a Trustee of St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, and was a fundraiser for The Ronald McDonald House, The Boy Scouts of America, The Archbishop's Council for the Laity and many others. He sold thousands of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and was the long-time "official Santa" at Bear Stearns.

Tom's true love was his family. He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He and his loving wife Joan were married for 58 years. His three children, Paul (Bernadette), Charlie (Julie) and Regina (Anthony) and the loves of his life, his eight grandchildren, Lauren, Gregory, Courtney, Marielle, Perry, Gracie, Tommy and Xavier were adored by him.

An avid reader of US History, Tom enjoyed being surrounded by books and maps. He enjoyed classic WWII movies with his favorite treat, Junior Mints. He loved golf, always commiserating about his game with his buddies. When not on the golf course, he was often spotted with his leaf-blower, making sure the driveway was pristine. A summer barbecue, a dip in the pool, a Macanudo cigar in his hand while pushing a grandchild on a swing made a perfect day for Tom and that is how his family will always remember him. Tom was surrounded with love and laughter throughout his life and in his final days. His brilliant light will live on in our hearts forever. Please keep him in your prayers.

Donations may be made in his honor to: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis or to the charity of your choice. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 12:30pm, Saturday, March 21 at St. Paul the Apostle RC Church, Brookville, NY. He will be interred at the Locust Valley Cemetery in Locust Valley, NY.

Plan Would Transform Swath of Inwood Into Tech and Health-Care Hub

*** begin quote ***

INWOOD — An Uptown politician wants to plug Northern Manhattan into the city’s growing tech sector.

City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez plans to announce a proposal to redevelop a large swath of land in the easternmost part of Inwood into a hub for the technology and health care sectors.

*** and ***

Rodriguez envisions replacing some of this with a development that approaches technology on multiple levels. He described a space that could include a tech incubator, as well as labs for local institutions such as Columbia University, Manhattan College and CUNY to partner on advanced research. The councilman highlighted the educational and job-training opportunities a development like this could create.

"I want to build a tech community within our community,” he told DNAinfo New York. “To put together a space where Apple or Google can say, ‘We can come teach coding in this community,’ so people can get that $60K a year job.”

MFOUND: Isn't a basketball program with a school attached

If you took a poll and asked students: "Would you like MC to pay coach Masiello more money to ensure that he stays at the college?", the overwhelming answer would be yes.

If you took another poll and asked students: "Would you be willing to pay higher tuition to ensure that coach Masiello is paid more and does not leave the college?", you would get a very different response.

No objection to paying him more if and only if the basketball program is self-supporting. Beyond that, no. If he's unhappy making $250k a year (or up to the point that the program is self-supporting), then he shouldn't let the door hit him on the ass on his way out.

My $0.02.

I'm there with you. Manhattan College isn't a basketball program with a school attached to it, it's an institution of higher learning that's got a pretty decent basketball team. The last thing I'd ever want to see is the school lose sight of the fact that delivering a high quality education is its mission.

I just want to know how other schools with comparable student populations and comparable (and sometimes smaller) endowments manage to pay up when it comes to athletics. I'm not going to claim to be an expert in higher education finance, but it certainly seems doable, especially when we have a guy who's earned it.

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) cites Catholic New York and Gatens, Brian [MC1982]

2015-Mar-21

Dear John,

The March 19. 2015 Edition of Catholic New York, at page 26, has an article.
about the JASPERS making the NCAA National Championship for the Second time in
a row.

The article ends with the following:
"The Jaspers are making their eighth overall appearance in the tournament and will
be rooted on by Jaspers fans from past and present.

Brian Gatens, class of 1992, told CNY that the energy and enthusiasm is special at
Manhattan and the party atmosphere of Selection Sunday brings him back to when
he was a student.

'My best memories are Manhattan College,' he said. 'I loved going here. I loved being
part of the tradition of Manhattan College. It is great to be with everybody and be on
campus and see what is happening here. I'm looking forward to the first game and to
the second game we are going to play in the tournament."

Best,

Mike

ENDNOTE: Obits and Fear of Dying

2015-Mar-21

Our Primal Fear of Dying

*** begin quote ***

I think over time we grow into our mortality as we do our maturity. That said, I’ve seen 70- year-olds who grasped desperately to the bitter and fearful end. Likewise, I’ve seen 7-year-olds dying of cancer accept their death with a knowing grace that both stuns and humbles. When we can emotionally as well as intellectually place ourselves within a larger storyline and accept life as the grand primal epic that it is, we find a right place within life – and perhaps make peace with death as a meaningful dimension of it.

*** end quote ***

Epic?

I guess some folks live an epic.

I read about my fellow Jaspers accomplishments and I am humbled.

Too late now, but I’m impressed with their adventures.

It’d have been great training for a much younger me to “collect” these stories back then to get a sense of what was possible.

Too late, I get smart.
