The day a Holocaust survivor got revenge on his tormentor
By Martin Greenfield
November 9, 2014 | 3:21am

*** begin quote ***

He survived the savagery of the Holocaust, made it to America with barely a penny and became a world-famous tailor in Brooklyn, dressing celebrities and presidents. In his new memoir, “Measure of a Man,” Martin Greenfield tells the story of his extraordinary life. In this excerpt, he explains how the concentration camps nearly stripped him of his humanity at age 16 — and the day he got it back.

*** and ***

“Shoot her!” the other boy yelled. “That’s what we came here for! Do it!”

I froze. I couldn’t do it. I could not pull the trigger. That was the moment I became human again. All the old teachings came rushing back. I had been raised to believe that life was a precious gift from God, that women and children must be protected.

Had I pulled the trigger, I would have been like Mengele. He, too, had faced mothers holding babies — my mother holding my baby brother — and sentenced both to gruesome deaths. My moral upbringing would not allow me to become an honorary member of the SS.

*** and ***

A friend shared with me an article from a 1945 issue of Life magazine about Nazi suicides following the war. Here is a portion of what it said: “In the last days of the war the overwhelming realization of utter defeat was too much for many Germans. Stripped of the bayonets and bombast which had given them power, they could not face a reckoning with either their conquerors or their consciences. These found the quickest and surest escape in what Germans call Selbstmord, self-murder . . . In Hitler’s Reich, Germans stopped killing others and began killing themselves. In Weimar, the mayor and his wife, after seeing Buchenwald atrocities, slashed their wrists.”

That day at the mayor’s home, God pricked my conscience. In so doing, He spared me the guilt and shame of killing the mayor of Weimar’s wife.

I didn’t need to kill her. She did it for me.

L'chaim

Pro-life is pro-life.

It’s engrained in our DNA.

And yet the “culture of death” just rolls on.

You talk about a “war on women” or “racial discrimination”.

Look at sex selection abortions.

Look at the minority abortions.

That’s the real war.

I go back to my favorite analogy.

Willie Crowther programmed Colossal Cave Adventure and I spent a lot of time on it.

But from it, I learned an important lesson — if you killed the bird, then you never got by the snake.

What if one of those aborted humans was the girl who would cure cancer, the boy who would bring peace, … … write the next Lullaby, figure out FTL travel, or some other hither too unimaginable invention or discovery.

But “we”, as society, killed her / him, and will never advance?

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for a 16 months old George Mele

2014-Dec-29

Good Evening All,

Nancy Maksomski asks for our prayers for her Nephew, George Mele, 16 months old. Little George is quite sick. Yesterday, he started to run a high fever and he and his parents have been in the E/R all day today. The MDs think he has a Bacteria in his hip from a previous illnes and they are waiting for the results of an MRI just performed so that they may determine if surgery is necessary or antibiotics will work. Please pray the the MDs find that they will be able to spare this little fellow surgery and that antibiotics will quickly remove the Bacteria with no further complications. Please raise the volume for George, his parents and their Family. Thank you. God Bless.

Good Afternoon All,

Nancy Maksomski has just shared an update regarding Little George, her Nephew. The MDs thought they found the problem last evening, which was Strep Throat but he is not responding to the Medication and his Fever is still very high. As little George still cannot walk, the MDs feel the Hip is a separate problem from the Strep Throat. Please keep the volume up for George, his parents and Family as we pray that the Doctors get both issues under control and resolve them. Thank you. God Bless.

# - # - # - # - #

http://www.unep.org/experts/default.asp?Page=profiles&ExpertID=474&ShowList=%20no&eName=Joseph%20Alcamo

Prof. Joseph Alcamo is Chief Scientist of the United Nations Environment Programme and the first Chief Scientist appointed within the UN system. Since coming to UNEP in 2009, he has been working to strengthen the interface between global science and policy. He has convened groups of scientists to produce quick response reports for policy making on climate change, air pollution, ozone layer depletion, and food security issues.

While at UNEP he has helped found the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, an alliance of governments and non-state partners dedicated to fast action on pollutants that cause both air pollution and climate change. At UNEP he has also initiated an international "Foresight" process for identifying emerging issues, co-founded a new umbrella organization for climate impact science (PROVIA), co-organized the UN Global Assessment of Water Quality, and helped found Future Earth a new international framework for global change research.

He is on leave as Director of the Center for Environmental Systems Research at the University of Kassel, Germany and Professor of Environmental Systems Science and Engineering. His main scientific contributions have been in the areas of global modelling of the environment, integrated assessment modelling, environmental scenario analysis, and climate impact research with a focus on the impacts of climate change on water resources.

Earlier, Alcamo led the development of the IMAGE 2 model, one of the first integrated models of climate change, and was co-author of the IPCC SRES emission scenarios which have been used for ten years as a main input for projecting climate change. He has been active with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for more than 15 years. He has published widely on the subject of climate change impacts on water resources and land use, and produced six books on global environmental themes including the 1998 book Global Change Scenarios of the 21st Century (Pergamon Press), and the 2012 book on "Life in Europe under Climate Change (Wiley-Blackwell). He was a Coordinating Lead Author with the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) and coordinated the global modeling of MA scenarios.

He is co-founder of the Global Water System Project of the Earth System Science Partnership, and through this project and other activities has strongly promoted water research on the global scale. In the 1990s his team in Kassel developed one of the first global water resource models, WaterGAP, which has since been used in many global assessments and studies of the world water system. Later he contributed to the first World Water Vision scenarios, and he recently led the development of one of the first continental-scale models of ambient river water quality.

He received the Max Planck Research Prize for helping to develop the field of integrated modelling of the environment, and is a recipient of the Grand Prix des Lumires de l'Eau de Cannes for contributions to global water research.

ADMINISTRIVIA: New project JASPER JOTTINGS WIKI

2014-Dec-31

http://www.jasperjottingswiki.com

Yeah, I know, I’m a glutton for punishment.

I want to have an online encyclopedia — like wikipedia — for all the Jaspers that aren’t in THE Wikipedia.

During December 2014, I made several attempts.

THE Wikipedia runs MediaWiki as it’s software. I took several runs at it but couldn’t secure it.

So I am using TikiWiki.

Not as feature rich and easy, but it’s apparently secure.

To lock it down, I had to restrict editing to invited Users. Anyone can browse it.

If you’d like to add to it, drop me an email and I’ll send you an invite.

I’m working on it for a little bit each day. (Hey, it’s a hobby.)

As part of it, I’m going to put links to THE Wikipedia for Jaspers who made the cut. And correct to add to their pages.

Each week, I’ll add the weekly content to the wiki.

As time permits, I’ll work backward thru all the content I have.

Feel free to help.

Laugh.

Nothing like fun cleaning the Aegean Stable. And, I ain’t a Greek God.

ADMINISTRIVIA: Forming an informal Wiki advisory board

2015-Jan-01

RE: Forming an informal Wiki advisory board

Dear fellow Jaspers:

I'm looking for feedback on this wiki.

I've put a few hours into it and can see the "stable".

Basically, if I cant get Jaspers in to THE Wikipedia, then I'll create OUR own.

Wish I started this back in 1994 when I started "doing" Jasper News. Shoulda, coulda, and woulda! They'll kill you.

Basically it's recreating the old Green Books online.

To prevent vandalism, I've made it world wide readable, but editing by invitation only.

Maybe if I can do a good enough job, Alma Mater's paid alumni staff will take it over.

With alumni, faculty, and students support, it COULD be a great resource.

We'll see.

Any way that's my vision. And, I appreciate any feedback.

I completed integrating the B's with THE Wikipedia.

http://www.jasperjottingswiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=B

And, I'm excited with the result.

Each week, I'll:
  • integrate that week's Jottings into the wiki.
  • integrate a prior week's Jottings into the wiki
  • complete a letter in the integration effort.
  • Update the wiki with a year in the HOF.

By this time next year, there should be substantial progress as a resource.

Thoughts.

Bus-iness
Urban bus tour celebrates San José
Robert Isenberg

*** begin quote ***

“When you’re on vacation,” says Andrés Oreamuno, “you want to take the most advantage of your time. You don’t want to waste a minute.”

So Oreamuno came up with an idea: Since thousands of travelers end up in San José, why not show them the sights? Most people end up lost and bored in Costa Rica’s capital, because they don’t know where to go or what they’re looking at. But what if they could jump on a bus and learn about the city’s sights and history in a comprehensive two-hour jaunt?

The result is Costa Rica City Square Tours, a two-month-old business that attracts between six and 16 intrepid tourists per day. Oreamuno came up with the idea during a visit to Chicago, when he watched his older brother run the Chicago Marathon. Because the Oreamunos didn’t have much time to explore the city, they took a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. Andrés was inspired, and when he returned to Costa Rica he developed the idea.

*** and ***

Oreamuno has his own experience in unfamiliar places: He studied marketing and management at Manhattan College in New York City, and he spent a semester in Australia. A diminutive and gentle young man, Oreamuno feels strongly about the importance of San José.

“Most of the history and culture of Costa Rica is in San José,” he asserts.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Kevin and family

2015-Jan-02

Dear Friends,

I was vague in my last prayer request in respect for Kevin's privacy but the Family have given me the O'K to tell you we are praying for Kevin Kearney, Esq. '74. This good and faithful servent of God is home at peace, with his Family and as Tom Delaney tells us, the Family (as we too) have been praying for a miracle but it seems that the Lord feels that Kevin's work here is done and he is being called home. Please keep the volume up for this good man, his wife, their three Children and their Family and Friends. If Kevin is not to remain with us on earth, we pray that the next step in his journey is peaceful and full of glorious expectation. Thank you. God Bless.

JOBIT: McFarland, Charles Chuck [MC1967 RIP]

Charles "Chuck" McFarland

1946 - 2014s
Charles "Chuck" McFarland Notice
McFarland, Charles Chuck

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Tri-City Electrical Contractors, Inc. passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Saturday, December 27th.

Chuck had been with Tri-City since 1995 and was responsible for all financial management and reporting, as well as all administrative departments of the Company, including information systems, human resources, safety and training, purchasing, fleet maintenance and contract administration. A Certified Public Accountant, Chuck had over forty years' experience providing financial and administrative management expertise in the construction industry. As CFO at Tri-City, Chuck led the company through many challenging times, through economic peaks and valleys, through the sale of the company in 1998 to its buyback by senior management in 2003. His financial expertise was widely recognized by construction, accounting, banking and insurance professionals. Ever with his eye on excellence, Chuck could find the humor in any given situation, even if it was at his own expense. He was a leader, mentor, friend and advocate for all Tri-City employees and was the author of many, often anonymous, kindnesses to employees in need. He encouraged education, whether it was a trade apprentice program or an academic degree to the point where, at his urging, the Board of Directors established a scholarship program for children and grandchildren of Tri-City employees.

Previous to his employment with Tri-City, he served as Vice President and Treasurer of one of the nation's largest electrical contractors and as President and CEO of a national communications construction engineering and service company.

A U.S. Naval Officer, Chuck served as a Supply Officer aboard the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67.

He received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1967 from Manhattan College.

Chuck was an avid reader, especially military history and held anyone who had served or is currently serving in the military in the highest regard. And he loved spending time with his grandchildren!

Chuck McFarland led by example and will be missed by everyone at Tri-City Electrical Contractors, Inc. His legacy to our company is the standard of excellence he provided and the friendship and support he gave to us all.

WIKIPEDIA: Castro, Luis Manuel [MCattendee RIP] early Major Leaguer

2015-Jan-03

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Castro

Luis Manuel Castro (November 25, 1876 – September 24, 1941) was born in Medellín, Colombia.) He was the first Latin American born player to play in Major League Baseball in the United States, and the first Latin American since Cuban player Esteban Bellán in 1873 to play professional baseball. If one does not consider the National Association a major league, then Castro was the first Latin American to play in Major League Baseball.[1]

A second baseman and right-handed batter, Castro attended Manhattan College and played for the Jaspers baseball team. He played his one and only major league season with the 1902 American League champion Philadelphia Athletics. In his brief 42-game stint, he posted a .245 batting average, with one home run and 15 runs batted in, 35 hits, 18 runs scored, 8 doubles, 1 triple and two stolen bases in 143 at bats.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports Kevin's passing

2015-Jan-03

Dear Friends,

It is with a very sad heart that I share word of Kevin's passing this morning. Tom Delaney, in his own grief, has just let us know of the death of this good man. Some of us knew Kevin better than I did but what I knew of Kevin was easy to love and respect. As Tom has said, " We have lost one of the good ones." The hole that Kevin's Passing leaves in the hearts of his Family and friends is filled by the love and goodness he shared while he lived and the example he set for all. Please keep Kevin and his Family in your prayers as they so deeply mourn their loss. I will share details with you as soon as I have them. Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: The "(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs" needs to end

2015-Jan-03

The War on Drugs Was Born 100 Years Ago
By Mark Thornton
Mises.org
December 26, 2014

*** begin quote ***

Mr. Chairman, I want to thank you for the opportunity to debate the War on Drugs in this forum. Mr. Chairman, as you probably know, the War on Drugs was not a response to calls from experts, it was not in response to recommendations from the medical community, or even the law enforcement community. Mr. Chairman, the War on Drugs was started by the agitation of racists, bigots, religious fanatics, believers in eugenics, extremist politicians, and power hungry diplomats. In other words, Mr. Chairman, the average ordinary American.

The War on Drugs was initiated by legislation that was passed not to help drug addicts and protect the innocent, but rather was designed to control and marginalize minority groups and to push the United States into a leadership role in world diplomatic affairs.

The War on Drugs is 100 years old today. It kills thousands of people, destroys untold number of lives, and wastes hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Plus it prevents us from using three of the most miraculous plants on the planet, even for their “legitimate” uses.

The Harrison Narcotics Act

As written, the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914 was legislation that established a tax and registration requirement on narcotics and cocaine. Politicians and journalists openly targeted Chinese immigrants, Southern blacks, and Mexicans with outrageous propaganda. The real priority of the legislation, however, was to comply with the first international drug control treaty, the International Opium Convention of 1912.

*** end quote ***

What a good way to start off a new year with my favorite rant.

Now no one is saying that “addiction is good”.

But it’s a MEDICAL problem; not a legal one.

“Wine was used at least from the time of the early Egyptians; narcotics from 4000 B.C.; and medicinal use of marijuana has been dated to 2737 B.C. in China.” according to  http://www.infoplease.com/encyclopedia/science/drug-addiction-drug-abuse-history.html#ixzz3NPferqv9

So, a law is not going to cure the problem.

And, Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. So it can only make it worse.

After 100 years, perhaps it’s time to try something else?

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -- attributed to Einstein

Argh!

But, I have a tin foil hat?
