POSITRACTION: The Syracuse Chiefs, an exemplar of Noblesse oblige

Team’s visit to children’s hospital is a big win after a bad loss
Posted on August 12, 2014

*** begin quote ***

A professional baseball player whose team gets clobbered, yet shows up the next morning at a children’s hospital — I mean really shows up, doesn’t just phone it in — is more than OK in my book.

Ten players from the Syracuse Chiefs, the minor league Class AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals, did just that Tuesday. They brought a lot of smiles to pediatric patients at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

The players stayed a good two hours, handing out souvenirs, talking with kids and their parents and signing autographs. Pitcher Matt Grace read a children’s book aloud (“Knuckleball Ned,” by Toronto Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey). None of the players seemed to be in any hurry to leave, and the adults in the room were just as happy as the kids about that.

*** end quote ***

Noblesse oblige!

I guess — other than exemplars of bravery, honesty, or charity — exemplars, or just examples, of Noblesse oblige inspire POSITRACTIONs.

While these fellows are pro baseball players trying to get to the “bigs”, they are fighting for their dreams and their livelihood. To be self-concerned would be “understandable”. But, yet here, they put it all aside to make some sick kids happy. That’s class.

Baseball has some great examples of exemplar behavior — Clamente classy charity, Jeter classy team spirit, Rose for hustle and clay feet, and on and on. These guys demonstrate the best of baseball imho.

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973] and a thought-filled "pre-obituary"

2014-Aug-24

FROM: ’Michael J. McFadden'

To {Privacy Invoked}: Thank you for sharing a very heartfelt and thought-filled “pre-obituary." We'll all be there eventually, and all too few of us really put enough planning into it. I'm writing this also to specifically suggest something, although I don't know specifically where to point you. There are several "memorial" type sites that I have seen over the years where they host an obituary and have a sign-in book for people to leave their remembrances and condolences to family members. They are done very well, and I've seen some very meaningful messages left on them over the years. I know that I've been far more active in getting to "know" people and develop friendships on the internet than in person over the past 20 years or so, and so I think for myself such a thing would certainly be worth looking into (I'm 20 years your junior, but it's never too early to be thinking.)

I wish you well in your future trip, and will send a note of good fellowship up with you to show St. Pete or whoever if he's hanging around the gateway! Hopefully see you hanging out on the Jasper Cloud someday!

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball head coach Erin Lindsey has announced that LaKell Havens has been named assistant coach for the 2014 season. Most recently, Havens served as an assistant at NYU during the 2013 campaign.

While at NYU, Havens’ main duties included collaborating with the other members of staff to create practice plans, while also evaluating and pursuing potential recruits.

“We are so excited to have LaKell joining our staff,” Lindsay said. “She will be a great asset in training our hitters and blockers, especially our middles. She shares our staff philosophy of developing the whole student-athlete and is experienced mentoring players in a rigorous academic environment.”

While also working at NYU, Havens served as the marketing director for FiberLove Bar, which is all natural vegan food. In that capacity, she managed a team of 20-plus field representatives nationally, and coordinated and executed marketing strategies and campaigns.

“LaKell's marketing experience will serve the program well in our recruiting, alumni relations and community outreach efforts,” Lindsey added.

Havens graduated from Manhattan College in 2012 with a degree in psychology and was named a captain of the volleyball team as a senior.

Digital Signage Service Upgrade

This summer, ITS has been working to ready an upgraded Digital Signage service for the Manhattan College Campus. This service will provide content to the Digital Signage units in the new Student Commons, as well as to the existing units on campus. A major feature of this system will be the use of live media RSS feeds to provide fresh content for the numerous units, including event feeds from the college's calendaring system. This will reduce - or eliminate the need - for users on campus to create and upload graphic posters.

Jack Curran, vice president for mission; Antonio Cordoba, Ph.D., assistant professor of modern language and literature; Shawn Ladda, Ed.D., professor of kinesiology; Carol Hurwitz, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics; as well as Heidi Laudien, Ph.D., associate professor of English, and James Abulencia, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemical engineering, who have been designated as the College’s campus ambassadors.

School of Arts

Mehnaz M. Afridi, Ph.D., director of the Manhattan College Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center (HGI), gave a talk for the Turkish Islamic Center at Shaarei Tikvah Synagogue in Scarsdale, N.Y. on July 14.

HGI has partnered with Yeshiva, Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and SelfHelp (social services) to create three fellowships. Three MC students and Yeshiva students will be working together with a Holocaust survivor and attend 8-10 events. The Fellowship is called YHS: Bridging Faiths Through the Holocaust.

Afridi will serve on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Committee On Religion, Ethics and the Holocaust. The Committee serves as a resource for individuals and groups grappling with the ethical and philosophical issues raised by the Holocaust and contemporary manifestations of anti-Semitism.

Afridi attended a luncheon at the British Consulate to meet and consult with the United Kingdom Commission on the Holocaust in June. Members of the commission included Mick Davis, Helena Bonham Carter and Amy Kaplinsky, and were appointed by Prime Minister Cameron.

Kevin Ahern, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies, recently took part in the Catholic Conversation Project (CCP), a gathering of young theologians, for a few days of panels, discussions, camaraderie and prayer. He was cited in the National Catholic Reporter’s coverage of the event.

publication of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business.

Additionally, Sheridan was elected vice president of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business at their annual conference held in Lenox, Mass.

Andrea Laquidara ’14 and Alyssa Vigada ’14 were among 71 recipients of the Excellence in Accounting Scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year, which were awarded by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and its Foundation for Accounting Education.

School of Education and Health

Shawn Ladda, Ed.D., professor of kinesiology, representing the national organization SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators), participated in the LGBT Sports Coalition Summit hosted by Nike in Portland, Ore. this summer. The mission of the Coalition is to wipe out homophobia in sport. Nike has already committed more than $200,000 in funding and plans to continue its financial support this next year.

Additionally, Ladda served as keynote speaker and delivered a three-hour workshop entitled, “From the Common Core to Bullying Prevention: Physical Literacy is a Social Justice Issue!” at the California Physical Education Workshop, a week-long professional development opportunity for current teachers held at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo in July.

School of Engineering

Computer engineering major Daniel Sanz ’15 published a paper, “Automated Menu Recommendation System Based on Past Preferences” in the July 2014 edition of International Journal of Advanced Computer Science and Applications (IJACSA). JHQ: Dilemmas of American religion on Sept. 11

2014-Aug-30

http://manhattan.edu/news/colleges-holocaust-genocide-and-interfaith-education-center-welcomes-historian-religion-charles

College’s Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center Welcomes Historian of Religion Charles H. Long

Charles Long to discuss the dilemmas of American religion on Sept. 11.

On Sept. 11, Manhattan College’s Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education (HGI) Center will commence the fall semester with a discussion on the dilemmas of American religion by historian Charles H. Long, Ph.D.

Long, a retired scholar and professor of the history of religions, studied with Joachim Wach, the pioneer of the comparative study of religion at the University of Chicago. He also helped to establish the international scholarly journal History of Religions with Mircea Eliade and Joseph Kitagawa. Both the journal and discipline played a major role in the study of religion in the U.S.

In addition to the University of Chicago, Long has held faculty positions at the University of North Carolina and Duke University, and was the Jeannette K. Watson Professor of History of Religions at Syracuse University. He also was director of the Research Center for Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. As a founding member of the American Society for the Study of Religion and the Society for the Study of Black Religion, Long was president of the American Academy of Religion in 1973.

His research and work captures a unique perspective on the meaning of religion in the formation of the Atlantic world, which is the history of relations between the people and empires bordering the Atlantic Ocean rim from the 1450s to the early 21st century. In particular, he transfers the issue of religion within the structures of the Atlantic formation, which offers further insight into the understanding of religion and African American religions.

On Nov. 5, the HGI Center welcomes Murray Baumgarten, Ph.D., to present the seventh annual Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture. Baumgarten is the Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature, co-director of Jewish Studies, and founding director of The Dickens Project at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Founded in 1996, the HGI Center is committed to understanding and respecting differences and similarities between people of all religions, races, ethnicities and nationalities.

The Sept. 11 event will be held at 4 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library, and the local community is invited to attend.

For more information about the HGI Center’s events, please contact Mehnaz Afridi, director of the HGI Center, at (718) 862-7284 or mehnaz.afridi@manhattan.edu.

JNEWS: Williams, Harry Roger III [MC1970] gets second paid radio work

2014-Aug-30

http://www.harrythelibrarian.com/2014/08/once-again-i-am-paid-radio-announcer.html

Friday, August 29, 2014
Once again I am a PAID radio announcer - Thanks, Marty!

*** begin quote ***

Yesterday I joined Marty and Samantha in the WORC-FM 98.9 studio in Worcester to record a Marty's of Dudley radio commercial. Marty intended to introduce me to Lance Ballance, Rick Brackett and Matt Ferguson, who might help me find work as a radio announcer.

Next thing you know, I was the ANNOUNCER in yesterday's ad. It will air Sept. 2 to announce Marty's fall specials.

*** and ***

This was my first PAID (with hot dogs at Coney Island) radio work since my weekly "Critic At Large" spots on WGFP-AM 940 in the 1980s when I was paid actual money! Thanks, Marty!

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has several to mention

2014-Aug-30

Good Afternoon All,

We have some Prayer requests to respond to.

Mike McEneney asks for our prayers for a Grandmother who took a fall and broke a bone in her neck. She is in a Rehab facility and we pray that she recovers quickly so that she may return to her home and family.

John Reinke tells us that his good friend (oldest friend) requires leg surgery to hopefully improve his circulation and his leg swelling. Pete calls it " Roto Rooter of the Leg." We pray that the surgery is successful in accomplishing the desired result to get Pete comfortably back on his feet.

Please keep in your prayers Roberta Ronan. Please keep that volume up for Roberta, her Husband Marty and their Family.

Please keep Lisa Toscano in your prayers as she and her Family grieve the recent loss of Lisa's Mom, Mrs. Rose Toscano.

I ask that you keep a good friend of mine in your Prayers as we pray that he continues to heal without complication.

Thank you. God Bless.

Phil Colon

ENDNOTE: What President Obama could learn from Pope Francis

2014-Aug-30

http://www.irishcentral.com/opinion/niallodowd/What-President-Obama-could-learn-from-Pope-Francis-Albert-Reynolds.html

What President Obama could learn from Pope Francis and Albert Reynolds
Niall O'Dowd @niallodowd August 23,2014 05:00 AM

*** begin quote ***

Pope Francis gave Barack Obama a lesson in compassion and public relations on Thursday when he called the stricken family of beheaded Irish American journalist James Foley to pay his sympathies.

As far as we know he didn’t go out and play golf immediately afterwards.

He wasn’t photographed grinning broadly, driving his golf cart or swinging way without a care in the world.

He didn’t vainly try to pretend it was business as usual after an horrific act carried on YouTube that showed the cold blooded murder of a fellow citizen.

The pope’s action was just one more example of a compassionate and caring pontiff who gets what the modern world is about -- and cuts through the noise and haste and delivers a message of concern and caring.

He knows it is the big stuff that counts, not the doctrinal musings and angels on a pin debates of his predecessor.

*** and ***

Maybe he could take a leaf out of the book of a great Irish leader who died this week.

Albert Reynolds came to power in 1992 and told a stunned news conference he would bring an end to The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

The media practically laughed out loud. The Troubles had been going on 25 years with no end in sight.

Who was this trumped up band promoter, with no college education to try and attempt to solve a problem that was so difficult that all previous leaders had done was admire how difficult it was?

Within a year Albert was on the road to an IRA ceasefire, getting a US president involved in Irish affairs for the first time in history and creating a unique bond with a British Prime Minister John Major.

On August 31 1994 he pulled of an IRA ceasefire and peace followed.

There was no one laughing then.

*** end quote ***

Now I have never had the problems of the world resting on my shoulders, the Universe seems content to give “opportunities” sized to my modest abilities.

I think the write is spot on here. Often, it’s about what the media calls “optics”.

What I’d call: “Perception is reality”.

I don’t know what goes on in anyone’s head. Sometimes not even my own. But even I had to wonder: “what were he and his staff thinking?”

Argh!

Hopefully these are tow lessons that I can remember.
