POSITRACTION: Being “Christ-like” to a fellow human

2014-Aug-10

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/07/11/after-31-wedding-anniversaries-at-red-lobster-a-widow-received-an-unexpected-surprise-when-she-went-this-year-without-her-husband/

After 31 Wedding Anniversaries at Red Lobster, a Widow Received an Unexpected Surprise When She Went This Year Without Her Husband
Jul. 11, 2014 8:56pm
Oliver Darcy

*** begin quote ***

For 31 years, a Missouri woman and her husband spent their anniversary at Red Lobster. This year was different.

The unidentified woman’s husband passed away in March, so this year, her daughter volunteered to keep the tradition alive and taker her mother out for an anniversary meal, KSDK-TV reported.

Their meal proceeded as normal, until the waitress asked if they were celebrating anything special. According to the daughter’s brother, who posted the story on Reddit, his sister explained her parents’ tradition.

*** end quote ***

I read this and I asked myself if I was being “Christ-like” to my fellow humans who were silently invisibly suffering.

I’ve had a spouse pass. So I can empathize.

Next time someone is trying to merge in traffic, let them.

Maybe they too are having a bad year.

The S370HSSVs will do it anyway, but maybe this one has an “excuse”.

JOBIT: McNamara, James M. [MC1959 RIP]

2014-Aug-10

http://www.obrienfuneralhome.com/book-of-memories/1926121/McNamara-James/obituary.php

Obituary for James McNamara

James M. McNamara, 80, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at his home in Brielle.

Born in New York City, Jim devoted his life with service to his faith, country, and family. He served in the Army from 1954 through 1956 and graduated from Manhattan College in 1959 with a degree in Engineering.

After graduation, he married his wife, Mary Ellen, and began his career in the U.S. civil service as an engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration. He continued his public service with the Department of Housing and Urban Development; however, the capstone of his career was as a product safety engineer with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Jim was the leader of one of the CPSC’s labs that spurred development of important safety improvements in tools, like chain saws and lawn mowers. These improvements protect people from serious injuries every day.

In 1965, Jim and Mary Ellen settled in Laurel, Maryland, to raise their family. Jim was very active as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus at St. Mary of the Mills Parish. He also volunteered as a league commissioner with the Laurel Boys & Girls Club when his children participated in sports.

After Jim retired from the civil service in 1996, Jim and Mary Ellen moved to West Virginia until 1999, when they relocated to Brielle. Shortly after moving to Brielle, Jim volunteered at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and quickly became a favorite of the physicians, staff and patients. He was also a communicant at St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen (nee Bowen), and his children and their spouses, James McNamara, of Bethesda, Md., William and Karen McNamara, of Baltimore, Md., and Lynne and Dr. Daniel Flynn, of Sea Girt. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Courtney, and her husband, Rebel Casas, Heather, Connor, Brandon and Aiden Flynn, and Billy, Sean, and Melanie McNamara, as well as his great-grandchild, Delaney Casas. Jim is also survived by his brothers, Michael McNamara, of Stamford, NY, and Patrick McNamara, of Gainesville, Fl., as well as other relatives and friends who shared many good times with him.

Jim belonged to the American Society of Civil Engineers, The Potomac Arms Collectors and N.J. Gun and Pistol Club. Jim enjoyed his fall deer hunting trips with his family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at 9:30 AM at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Sea Girt. Jim’s ashes will be enurned at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Brielle First Aid Squad, 710 Old Bridge Rd., P.O. Box 262, Brielle, NJ 08730.

MFOUND: Middle school scholars are at Alma Mater

2014-Aug-10

http://www.dreamschoolnyc.org/Whats-New-at-DREAM/dream-university.html

What better way to help students focus on college than to send them to college? This summer, DREAM's middle school scholars are at Manhattan College for five weeks to take classes on campus, participate in enrichment activities such as baseball, basketball and soccer and even choose a major!

ELA and Math classes are co-taught by DREAM teachers and student teachers enrolled in Manhattan College's Education program. On Fridays, scholars  go on field trips based on their majors. For example, scholars who major in Engineering visit the Brooklyn Bridge with a current Engineering college student.

Through DREAM University, middle school students will experience "college life" through on-campus classes, tours and student-faculty interaction.

Silver Line Project Gets a New Chief
by Karen Goff | August 11, 2014 at 9:30 am

*** begin quote ***

The Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority has hired an experienced transportation project leader from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) as executive director of the Silver Line project.

Charles Stark will take over the project as Phase II – extending the rail line from Reston through Washington Dulles International Airport to Ashburn – gets underway.

Stark succeeds Pat Nowakowski, who resigned this spring to become president of the Long Island Railroad.

Phase I of the Silver Line opened to the public July 26. The 11.7-mile rail line, Metro’s first new line in more than 20 years, has four stops in Tysons Corner and one at Reston’s Wiehle Avenue. Wiehle-Reston East will be the end of the Silver Line until Phase II opens in 2018. It is by far the busiest stop on the Silver Line, according to Metro officials.

Stark has 40 years experience in rail transportation, including 20 years engineering and operations experience with some of the largest transit agencies in the U.S. and 20 years experience in senior executive positions with private engineering firms, MWAA said.

His most recent post was vice president and project executive for Aecom, a major engineering firm with specialty expertise in large transit infrastructure projects, where he managed several projects for Los Angeles MTA, including the Westside Subway Extension.

He previously was assistant general manager of San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit system and executive officer for engineering and construction for the Los Angeles MTA. He also has held a number of other positions, including leadership of a team involved in rebuilding New York’s World Trade Center complex and its public transit facilities following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Stark holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from City College in New York. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and California.

“The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is fortunate to have someone of Charles Stark’s broad experience in transit construction and engineering in this position as we complete the Silver Line project,” Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter said in a statement. “He will be instrumental in achieving our goal of providing top-quality transportation infrastructure for the National Capital region.”

The $2.9 billion Phase II will include six rail stations, including five at ground level and one on an elevated structure; nine entrance pavilions and pedestrian bridges; aerial guideways through Dulles Airport; and 89,000 feet of track. Engineering and design work on Phase II has been ongoing since last year.

I have been trying to determine the year our John Burke graduated from Manhattan. I asked my cousin Tom, who went to Tolentine, if he knew when John graduated from Tolentine:

Jon Burke was Class of 1958 @ Tolentine.
Cousin Tom

That would seem to indicate that he would be the class of 1962 at Manhattan. In the Obituary his son says that he spent time campaigning at the "Central Valley Post office", and my records show that John P. Burke,'62 resided in Central Valley. Mystery solved!

JNEWS: Read, Henry [MCstudent] maps Shelter Island’s septic systems

Building Department intern creating septic system map

2014 08 11 081414 Intern BuildingDepti

*** begin quote ***

One of the keys to Shelter Island’s long-term ecological sustainability lies in a computer program installed on a computer at the Building Department.

Summer intern Henry Read, an Islander and graduate of Mercy High School in Riverhead, spends eight hours a day analyzing the local terrain with the “Pictometry” application. He’s been tasked with creating an online database of Shelter Island’s septic systems for the Town Geographic Information System (GIS) site.

“What we hope to do at the local level is build a better system for spotting potential problems,” Town Engineer John Cronin, said.

Mr. Read studies civil engineering at Manhattan College. He contacted the Building Department after reading an advertisement in the Reporter. “I have always loved the environment [here],” he said, “and working on Shelter Island is even more special.”

*** and ***

One use for Mr. Read’s database is to use it in conjunction with independent laboratory tests. By matching bodies of water with high levels of coliform to aging septic tanks, engineers will, be able, to a certain extent, pinpoint the source of pollution.

*** and ***

Mr. Read hopes to map the systems of Shelter Island’s oldest homes by hand, but currently works only from his desk at the Building Department. The software program he relies on has proven invaluable, he said. The company behind Pictometry uses low-flying airplanes to map buildings and changes in terrain.

*** and ***

Shelter Island will consider options for continuing Mr. Read’s work once the intern returns to Manhattan College in the fall. Mr. Cronin noted that the Town Board would likely support the completion of the database, “based on the perceived success during this summer’s effort.”

JHQ: Manhattan College's Lasallian heritage

2014-Aug-12

http://youtu.be/CBWU7yReq5U

Published on Aug 11, 2014

Manhattan College's Lasallian heritage is derived from a Catholic teaching order established by Saint John Baptist de La Salle in 17th century France. Today, this translates into five important values that our campus community puts into practice: faith in the presence of God, an inclusive community, concern for the poor and social justice, respect for all people and quality education.

# - # - # - # - #

3+ minute video

[JR: I doubt that Saint John Baptist de La Salle would have used the term “social justice”. Unfortunately, it’s a term that has “baggage” from the “Liberal” Socialist Secular Progressives. Why can’t we just have “freedom and liberty”? What we get is “political correctness”, “Gooferment welfare / warfare state”, Crony Capitalism, and an oppressive government driving out private charity and Religious Freedom. I have “concern for the poor” but look askance at the concept of “social justice”. Back in the day, when I spent time with Brother President, I gave him the same diatribe to no avail. But what do you expect from a fat old white guy injineer who was a C student?]

This summer, Manhattan College partnered with Bloomberg for Education, which grants students and faculty in the School of Business unlimited access to the Bloomberg Professional service. The global 24-hour financial news and information service includes real-time and historic price data, financials data, trading news, analyst coverage and other professional analytic tools.

With access to the same information and technology relied on by professionals all over the world, students will benefit from a fully integrative curriculum that allows them to develop both analytical and decision-making skills using real events and real data.

Additionally, by gaining experience using Bloomberg technology, students have a competitive edge in a challenging employment industry.

“Needless to say, today’s job market is very competitive. Students entering the job market are frequently in competition with other candidates of similar academic background and qualifications.” says Hany Guirguis, Ph.D., professor of economics and finance. “Employers aren't going to spend three to five months training a new employee to use a Bloomberg terminal if a similar candidate already possesses this skill and can start working on day one. This is the type of competitive advantage that we are providing to our students.”

In fact, seniors hoping to prove their competency also have an opportunity to take the Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT) on Manhattan College’s campus each semester. The BAT is a standardized online exam that assesses critical thinking across a variety of competencies. It enables test-takers to showcase their strengths to more than 25,000 investment and financial recruiters.

“The BAT helps students anonymously market themselves to employers using the Bloomberg Talent Search,” says Natalia Boliari, assistant professor of economics. “It’s a unique opportunity to be contacted for internship or employment positions in areas such as Consultancy, Accounting, Insurance, Investment Banking, HR, Trading, Analytics, and many others offered by companies from around the world.”

Bloomberg for Education is the final feature in Manhattan College’s state-of-the-art finance lab, which is designed to mimic the professional instruments graduates will see in the financial industry.

The lab is outfitted with a full sized real-time stock ticker, two large flat panels TVs with scrolling financial data, and HP 8200 series desktops with 22-inch dual monitors that are also equipped with Morningstar Direct.

When Joe Olenik started his new job as the school facilities director for Weston public schools, he had little time to get his feet wet.

Immediate projects facing him included replacement of the synthetic turf on the lower soccer field, installation of stadium lights on the high school football field, a roof replacement project at the elementary school, an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) project at the middle school swimming pool, and a major window replacement project in 12 high school classrooms.

“I’m very fortunate. The staff here has been wonderful, so we’re moving along on the jobs,” he said.

Mr. Olenik’s first day of work in Weston was July 14. He replaced Dan Clarke, who had held the position for 10 years and left to take a job with the French-American School in White Plains.

*** and ***

In addition to work experience, Mr. Olenik has a number of college degrees. He has a bachelor’s degree in facilities and property management from Iona College, a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College, and an applied associate’s degree in engineering science from Westchester Community College.

*** and ***

Family

Mr. Olenik, 56, lives in East Fishkill, in Dutchess County, N.Y., with his second wife, Stephanie. The couple has two young children, Colin, 3, and Emily, 2, and Mr. Olenik has a stepson, Bradley, 10.

“The commute to Weston’s not too bad,” he said. But he hasn’t ruled out contemplating a move closer to Weston.

Family means a lot to him, he said.

Mr. Olenik was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Westchester when he was five. His father, Anthony Olenik, is a World War II veteran, and started the bomb disposal unit for the Army.

His dad worked as a diesel train mechanic for the city of New York and was forced to retire at 65, due to the city’s mandatory retirement rules.

“My dad is still going strong. He’s 99 and will turn 100 in February,” Mr. Olenik said.

His mother, Maria, died a few years ago, at the age of 92. He has a sister, Maria, a math professor who lives in California, and two brothers, Anthony, a mechanical engineer, and John, a professor of engineering.

“All three boys have a degree in engineering. We seemed to follow each other,” Mr. Olenik said.

Bernie went to grammar school in the parish of the Sacred Heart, then attended Manhattan Preparatory School, the University of Vermont and Manhattan College where he earned a B.S. Degree. They spent their early married life in Hartford, Connecticut, then moved to Washington Township, New Jersey and Wauwatosa, Wisconson, before finally settling in Tarrytown, New York. After leaving sales, Bernie worked at Ayerst in various management roles in marketing where he spearheaded the promotion of ground-breaking drugs such as Fluothane, the first general anesthetic without major side effects, and Inderal, one of the first beta blockers.

After retirement, Bernie spent his leisure time golfing, gardening and volunteering his time at the New York Botanical Garden and the Tarrytown Traffic Commission. He learned to play the harmonica and belonged to a weekly musical group. He was a member for fifty years of Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown, and in later years was an active member of the Tarrytown Seniors.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Roberta Ronan

2014-Aug-15

Good Evening All, Once Again,

Mike McEneney has just told me that he heard from Buzz Ronan. Roberta has been in our prayers and it would seem that Roberta's test turned up something more serious than originally thought. Roberta has been diagnosed with having been infected by the West Nile Virus. Her vitals are now fine but she is currently unresponsive (asleep). It will take time for her to awaken and then the MDs will be able to evaluate if Roberta is compromised in any way. Marty (Buzz) thanks you all for your prayers. If any of you have reached out to them personally and he has not gotten back to you, he asks that you forgive him as he has been a little overwhelmed. Please keep the volume up for this good woman that all turns out as we pray for. Thank you. God Bless

JFOUND: Welte, Abby [MCstudent?] is never fully dressed without a smile

This Week's Petite in The Street: Abby Welte!
Posted on August 04, 2014

2014 08 12 abby

How petite are you: 5'1

What is your favorite thing about your body: My favorite thing about my body would have to be my eyes! I've always loved my blue eyes and they are the first thing people compliment me on. The second would have to be my hair, all my art students and campers say I have princess hair because it's long and soft and I'm always happy to hear that I look like a princess!

What is your proudest accomplishment: It's hard to choose just one. Recently, I've been lucky to accomplish a few of my goals. I've made the Dean's list at Manhattan College for both Fall and Spring semester and am now working as the "Art Specialist" at Spring Lake Day Camp. Additionally, I've been acting as my brother's agent, helping him get scouted and contacted by college and junior hockey teams across the country. My dream is to work in the NHL, hopefully in public relations or as an agent. So far we've had success and it's always fun to see that I'm actually good at what I love to do, especially when I get to work with my best friend and little brother.

What is your fashion philosophy: If you're not covered in dog hair, your life is empty. Haha just kidding. No but seriously no matter what I have on there's probably dog hair. Other than that I would say, dress for your body, you're a princess and you're woodland creature friends helped you get dressed. And of course, you're never fully dressed without a smile.

Who is your favorite petite celebrity: Okay, going to have to be honest and say that I am biased towards short women so I have a few... number 1. Hilary Duff. Who doesn't love Lizzie McGuire? She's 5'1 or 5'2, married to a hockey player and has an adorable son! Next would be number 2. Amy Poehler. Amy is an all around funny lady coming in at an amazing 5'2. Lastly, number 3. Kendall Coyne. Who you ask? She's on the 2014 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey team, she played for Northeastern University and is only 5'2! Together these three women really show the kind of person I am and hope to be, they combine sweet, funny and incredible strength.

What is your funniest petite moment: Honestly, it's probably me standing next to the women's volleyball team at school or the men's basketball team. Manhattan College is D1 in volleyball and basketball, my friend Allie is on the volleyball team so I've been around some of the taller girls and well, I can't talk to them without my neck hurting which stinks because they're all so nice! Another time one of the guys on the basketball team literally stepped on me because my head wasn't even in his line of sight. He was so surprised when he looked down and apologized profusely when he realized it was a person he stepped on, even better, some of my friends saw the whole thing.

MFOUND: Alma Mater is St. Patrick's Cathedral

2014-Aug-16

{Extraneous Deleted}

*** begin quote ***

What are some visual elements of St. Patrick's Cathedral? by Richard M Q: I want to know what Renwick was trying to convey when he built the cathedral using gothic style architecture. Specifics are much appreciated.

A: The Cathedral of St. Patrick (commonly called St. Patrick's Cathedral) is a decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States.

*The cathedral is built of brick clad in marble, quarried in New York and Massachusetts.

It can accommodate 2,200 people.

The site of the church takes up a whole city block, bounded by East 51st Street to the north, Madison Avenue to the east, East 50th Street to the south, and Fifth Avenue to the west.

The spires rise 330 feet (100 m) from street level.

The Saint John Baptist de la Salle altar remains one of the few original side-chapel altars commemorating the patron saint of catechists and teachers. The adjoining stained-glass window depicts the Papal bull (a type of letters patent) of approbation granted by the Vatican to the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools who, since 1848, have conducted numerous parish grade and high schools throughout the Archdiocese of New York, as well as Manhattan College, Riverdale (in The Bronx borough of New York City) and Lincoln Hall.

ENDNOTE: Robin Williams, an exemplar of the danger of depression

DEPARTED
Robin Williams: What I would have told actor about depression
Dr. Keith Ablow
By Dr. Keith AblowPublished August 12, 2014

Depression is the grand imposter -- posing as all powerful. It can be defeated, every time, if you or the person you care about confronts it like the grand imposter that it is. Tell yourself that, if depression is visiting you. Tell any friend with depression. Tell your family members who suffer with it. It is absolutely true. I promise you.

Here’s why we must be less self-involved.

I had an old Boss who was depressed because “technology was changing”. It was his perceived “forte”. It turns out he was worried about becoming obsolete. He had over a few hundred working for him in his organization. He was one of the best “People Leaders” I ever worked under. My specialty at the was VTAM. He spent at least a few hours a month chatting with me to “learn the capabilities of the technology”. I was young and too stupid to recognize the signs. He didn’t need to know the “bits and bytes”. Hell, most times I had to consult reference material. He committed suicide and the organization / “his” people were shocked. The organization never recovered. A year later is was split up and reorganized. A year after that it was reconstituted with a new name and new team. But us “vets” recognized it as “identical”.

Robin Williams brings back those days to me like when I missed catch a Pike Street fish. (Back in the day, they would throw to the Customer any fish they bought. Why I bought a fish is unknown? I attribute it to the adult refreshments I consumed. I don’t know what I did with the fish?)

Approaching a loved one who you think might be suicidal is no easy task. The first step is to be aware of the warning signs of suicide. The AAS offers the following mnemonic device: Is the path warm?

I: Ideation
S: Substance abuse

P: Purposelessness
A: Anxiety
T: Trapped
H: Hopelessness

W: Withdrawal
A: Anger
R: Recklessness
M: Mood changes
