I was saddened to learn today that Professor Mary Ann Groves passed away last November 29th. Professor Groves was one of the most wonderful teachers that I have ever known. She was always concerned about her students academically and personally. I can still hear her voice full of enthusiasm and purpose.
Dr.Groves always encouraged her students to pursue knowledge and strive for excellence in that pursuit. Thank you Professor Groves for the lessons you imparted to us. You live on in our hearts and minds. Thank you for all you gave us.

John "Pop" Watkins (born 1859) was a Negro Leagues catcher and manager for several years before the founding of the first Negro National League.
Watkins played most of his career for the Cuban Giants, until he broke his leg playing for the Giants at Oil City, Pennsylvania in May of 1907. [5] Since the Cuban Giants broke off into several teams, such as the Cuban X-Giants, the Genuine Cuban Giants, the Original Cuban Giants, and even the Famous Cuban Giants, researchers are still working out which players played for which teams, and how the teams split up.
He continued to manage several teams, some called "Pop Watkins Stars" or "Pop Watkins Giants."[4] Sometime after 1909, he would start the Havana Red Sox, a team which he managed until he died in 1924. During his career, he is said to have helped along the careers of George Dixon, Toussaint Allen, Phil Cockrell, Gifford McDonald,[4] Luke Archer, and Dennis Graham.
As a scout, Watkins is also alleged to have found many white players while scouting for the majors, including John McGraw, Hughie Jennings, John Hummel, Al Schacht, and Jack Dunn.
In the off-season, census records show Watkins may have sold sporting goods. And on his death certificate, it lists Watkins as a "baseball trainer."

Robert M. Hanna, Esquire, was named by Governor Christopher J. Christie as President to the N.J. Board of Public Utilities (BPU) on December 21, 2011. President Bob Hanna also serves as a member of the Governor's Cabinet. Prior to joining the Office of the N.J. Attorney General in January 2010, Bob was a director in the Newark-based law firm of Gibbons P.C., where he began working in May 2006. In private practice, he represented clients in a wide variety of complex white-collar criminal matters, civil matters and attorney-ethics matters. He also has served as a court-appointed receiver.
Previously, Bob joined the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey in May 1990. There he handled a wide array of affirmative and defensive civil matters, including appeals, on behalf of the federal government. His affirmative civil matters included, among others, a successful civil RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) action to rid Local 54 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union in Atlantic City of organized crime influence. Bob’s civil matters included defending the U.S. Attorney, federal judges and other federal officials in civil rights actions, litigating significant Freedom of Information Act cases, and opposing the municipality of Secaucus's attempt to halt a major federal rail transportation project.
In 1997, Bob joined the Frauds Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, later serving in a variety of roles, including Chief of the Securities - Health Care Fraud Unit and Criminal Health Care Fraud Coordinator. Among his many white-collar criminal cases, Bob was lead prosecutor in suits regarding the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and major pharmaceutical concern Bristol-Myers Squibb. As a federal prosecutor, Bob also tried complex, lengthy securities and health care fraud criminal cases.
Bob graduated from Manhattan College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After working for a year at a national public accounting firm, he attended Fordham University School of Law School in New York, serving on the Fordham Law Review staff and graduating in 1984 with a Juris Doctorate degree. Following law school, Bob was a litigation associate at the Cahill Gordon & Reindel law firm in New York, working on a broad range of commercial litigation matters. He is admitted to the practice of law in New Jersey and New York. Born in Teaneck and raised in New City, Bob has lived in Madison for 22 years.

I could never comfortably work for an employer who does not recognize essential family planning services.” Philbrick also expressed her belief that “the war on women is far from over.”
Thomas Ferguson, the director of the Peace Studies Department at Manhattan College brought to mind the fact that all of the aforementioned white, republican males were also Roman Catholic and managed to work “Christian hegemony into US Law.” Ferguson went on to suggest that if the owners of Hobby Lobby had been Muslim the ruling of the Court might have been different. He also pointed out that the ruling of the Supreme Court seems to erode the effects of Roe v Wade and the Affordable care act.

Woodbury Supervisor John Burke dies of complications from surgery

Any Woodbury residents looking to bend the ear of their town supervisor should have had no trouble finding John Burke: He stationed himself outside one of Woodbury's two post offices every Saturday morning, holding outdoor office hours to gather input from his fellow citizens.
His absence last weekend didn't got unnoticed.
The 73-year-old underwent a scheduled surgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla on Wednesday and came through it fine, only to suffer unrelated complications afterward, according to his son, Tom. After struggling with illness for several days, Burke died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Burke, a father of six and grandfather of 13, had been town supervisor since 2006, having eased into politics as a regular and vocal audience member at town meetings and then taking office by unseating an incumbent during a controversy over a 451-home development proposal. He was re-elected four times without opposition, except for a write-in challenge in 2009.
He presided through an eventful period in Woodbury, starting with the incorporation of a Village of Woodbury and division of local-government duties, and culminating recently in votes by the village and town boards to endorse Caesars Entertainment's bid for a casino license. In between were intermittent clashes with neighboring Kiryas Joel over the village's water pipeline and other issues.
Throughout, the affable, white-haired former principal considered it an honor to serve the town his family settled in after leaving the Bronx in 1968, his son Tom recalled Tuesday.
“He was so passionate for the town,” he said. “He was very protective of it.”
Burke grew up in the Bronx, attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School and Manhattan College and started his career as a business teacher and basketball coach at Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers.
He later took a teaching job at Nanuet Senior High School and went on to be an assistant principal for six years and principal for 23 years at that school. Upon his retirement in 2000, the district named the school after him.
“John was very dedicated to our community and loved by many,” Town Clerk Desiree Potvin said Tuesday in a statement on behalf of the town government. “Amongst his many accomplishments during his tenure, the one he was most proud of was the improvements to the Central Valley Pool/Pond. John was a fair and kind individual with a large, loving family. He will be extremely missed.”
After winning his first election in 2005, Burke said he'd started knocking on doors in June and visited 1,800 households by election day. His son, Tom, pointed to a similar feat of dedication on Tuesday, saying his father logged 105 consecutive Saturdays at the Highland Mills and Central Valley post offices.
But attending his grandchildren's graduations and other events and receiving their impromptu visits at Town Hall was an even bigger source of pride.
“The one thing that lit up his life was the 13 grandchildren,” he said. “Whatever was going on with the grandkids — that was his joy.”

Little-known Webb Institute, a tiny engineering college in Glen Cove, Long Island, was New York state's top finisher, ranking second overall. The school has just 79 undergraduate students, all on full scholarships, and its alumni earn an average salary of more than $65,000 within five years of graduating. Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art and Columbia University, both in Manhattan, were New York City's top two finishers, placing eighth and 22nd, respectively.
"Webb is the last private community college in the united States that offers to all students a four-year, full-tuition scholarship," said William Murray, its director of enrollment management. "This is the first time that we have been ranked."
Webb was helped by the fact that all of its students got jobs within two months of graduation.

Sister John Joseph Dunphy, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 74 years, died July 21 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.
Born Sarah Sabina Dunphy, she entered the congregation in 1940 from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Manhattan College; a master’s degree in guidance from Fordham University; and certification in administration/ supervision in 1977.
She taught at Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, 1942-44; Transfiguration, Williamsburg, 1944-46; St. Ambrose, Bushwick, 1946-48 and 1963-65; St. Malachy, East New York, 1948-51; St. Mary Star of the Sea, Far Rockaway, 1951-55; St. Brendan, Midwood, 1955-56; St. Christopher, Baldwin, L.I., 1956-58; St. Rita, L.I.C., 1958-63; St. Anthony of Padua, Greenpoint, 1965-1971; St. Augustine, Fort Greene, 1971-78; St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn, 1978-84, 1999-2009; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help H.S., Sunset Park, 1997-99.

Sister John Joseph was my freshman- and sophomore-year guidance counselor at Bishop Kearney H.S. and she was probably the happiest nun I ever met in my life. I didn’t know religious life could be so joyful until I met Sister John Joseph. She always had a hug and a smile (and a few Tootsie Rolls) for every student who crossed her path. She made everyone feel like they were special, like they mattered and that they were loved (by her and God). I can only imagine the hugs, smiles and Tootsie Rolls that God had waiting for her!

Boiling Spring Lakes’ new city engineer has 30 years of civil engineering experience in the private sector and a strong educational background.
The city has announced the employment of William G. Murphy for the newly created role.
Murphy will be paid an annual salary of $75,000 plus benefits and will begin work August 11.
“Mr. Murphy was one of five interviewees for the position,” city manager Jeff Repp said. “Based on his varied experience in engineering, including dealing with local governments on a variety of issues, he quickly rose to the top of the potential applicants. I’m pleased that he has agreed to come on board and develop this new position created by the city’s board of commissioners.”
Murphy completed his undergraduate work at Manhattan College, graduating cum laude with a degree in civil engineering. He received his master’s degree in the same field from Northwestern University in 1981. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Connecticut.
“I am very excited about it, for the city engineer has a profound impact on infrastructure improvements and safety for the general public,” Murphy said. “I understand what that is like, for I have a broad-based geotechnical and civil background. I am particularly interested in creating this new role of city engineer.”
Murphy said he has had experience evaluating earthen dams, in wastewater collection and distribution, drainage and road system design, and geohydrology.
He recently served as vice-president for Urban Engineers in Hartford, Connecticut, and was director of engineering and operations for AI Engineers in nearby Middletown from 2008 to 2010.

George C. Loehr received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Manhattan College in 1962, and a Master of Arts in English Literature from New York University in 1964. He began his engineering career in transmission planning with the Consolidated Edison Company of New York in 1962. Following the 1965 Northeast Blackout, he was actively involved in a wide range of follow-up activities, and chaired the committee which did the first computer simulation of that event.
Loehr joined the New York Power Authority as Chief Planning Engineer in 1969, and the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) in 1972. He was very active in regional, national and North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) activities, serving on numerous committees, subcommittees and task forces. He was named Executive Director of NPCC in 1989, and remained in that position until his retirement in 1997.
Now self-employed, Mr. Loehr does management consulting, appears as an expert witness, writes, and teaches a variety of courses on power systems to non-technical professionals. His clients have included organizations throughout the U.S., Canada and China. He serves as Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the American Education Institute (AEI), and is a charter member of Power Engineers Supporting Truth (PEST). Loehr is an “unaffiliated member” of the Executive Committee of the New York State Reliability Council, which works in conjunction with the New York ISO, and chairs its Reliability Compliance Monitoring Subcommittee. He is a recognized national expert on electric power system reliability.
Mr. Loehr has given expert testimony in the states of New York, Vermont, Kentucky, New Mexico, Mississippi, and in Washington, DC. He has done TV interviews with BBC, CNN, WPIX and CBC, and is a frequent lecturer, keynote speaker, and/or chair at professional conferences all over the U.S. and Canada. DELAND, Fla. - Freda F. Konchalski of Deland, formerly of Danbury, died Dec. 4, 2013. She was 95.
Konchalski was born Nov. 26, 1918, in New York City, the daughter of Adolph and Emily (Schultz) Hoppe. Raised and educated in New York, she had worked at both Fanny Farmers Candy and Manhattan College. She had been a resident of Danbury since 1971, most recently at the Glen Crest Retirement Community for 11 years, until moving to Florida in 2011.
Konchalski is survived by her children, Ronald S. Konchalski (Camille) of Somers, N.Y., and Patricia E. McNally (Stephen) of Deltona; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; and husband, Frank Konchalski.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, in Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield.
Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.

Bardales, Norman R.
Endwell: Norman Richard Bardales, 85, of Endwell, went to the Lord peacefully on July 30, 2014 after being diagnosed with lymphoma.
Born in New York City to Emma and Elisio Bardales, Norman is survived by his sister, Eleanor Garvey; along with his niece and nephews, Arnold, Francis, Paul, and Warren; and his sisters-in-law, Barbara Lynn and Carole Start. He is predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Eileen Bardales; his sister, Dorothy Treuhaft; and brother, Richard Bardales. Norman will be lovingly remembered by his children, Joseph Bardales, Karen O’Connor and husband Michael, and Carolyn Yasharian and husband Robert. Through laughter and smiles he will be kept close and fondly remembered by his adoring grandchildren, Trish O'Connor, Daniel Norman O'Connor, Jonny O'Connor, Chloe O'Connor, and Sophie Yasharian.
He is remembered by his special and enduring friendships with so many, especially his West 62nd Street Boys as "Bots," his Our Lady of Angels Paris Family that grew even more as the Church of the Holy Family, and neighbors old and new.
With a BEE from Manhattan College and a JD from St. John's University, Norman Bardales held office in the Law Association, was a Central New York patent attorney, member of the Bar Association of New York State and a registered patent attorney. Upon moving to Upstate New York, he was a member of the Broome County Bar Association and the Broome County Legal Association. He retired from IBM as a patent attorney in 1990.
In his spiritual life he was the President of the Midtown Catholic Association, a member of the Holy Name Society at the Church of the Holy Family, and in 2012 was the first recipient of the Diocese of Syracuse Immaculata Award. A devout Catholic, a United States Marine, a highly knowledgeable patent attorney, a friend, a spiritual adviser, a faithful Yankees fan, a devoted father and loving husband, Norm's strong faith, loving guidance, wit, and charismatic personality will be missed. He now dances once again with his wife to "Blame it on the Bossanova."
A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of the Holy Family, Endwell, Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, Sunday from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Norm's memory to the Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis St., Endwell, NY 13760.

FDIC Announces Appointment of Segundo Pereira as Director of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion and Departure of Andrew Gray, Deputy to the Chairman for Communications

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) today announced the appointment of Segundo Pereira as an Officer of the Corporation and as Director of the FDIC's Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI). The FDIC also announced the departure of Andrew Gray, Deputy to the Chairman for Communications, who will be leaving the agency to join JPMorgan Chase.
Mr. Pereira joins the FDIC with over 35 years of combined military and civilian federal service, including extensive expertise in applying and interpreting Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), and diversity-related regulations, as well as leading a professional staff. Mr. Pereira has been a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) since 2006, and was most recently the Director, Office of Operations/Office of Support with the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). SES positions he previously held include Executive Director of the Office of EEO, Diversity Management and Resolution at the Food and Drug Administration and Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Diversity Management and EEO at HHS. In his role as Deputy Assistant Secretary at HHS, Mr. Pereira served as the principal EEO and Diversity Officer for this cabinet-level agency with over 65,000 employees where he developed strategic plans and programs designed to ensure a diverse workforce. Prior to his civil service career, Mr. Pereira served in the U.S. Air Force for almost 28 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel. He has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the Legion of Merit while serving in the military, and the HHS Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service, the highest award granted by the Department and conferred by the Secretary to an employee.
Mr. Pereira has earned Master's Degrees from the Air War College and the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor's Degree from Manhattan College.
The FDIC also announced the departure of Andrew Gray, Deputy to the Chairman for Communications. Mr. Gray will be joining JPMorgan Chase as a Managing Director and Senior Communications Officer. He was appointed Deputy to the Chairman in June 2012 and joined the FDIC as the Director of Public Affairs in April 2007. Mr. Gray's last day at the FDIC will be September 12.
As Deputy to the Chairman, Mr. Gray was responsible for managing and coordinating both internal and external communications at the FDIC, including planning and executing public affairs activities to further the understanding of the FDIC's mission, objectives, and obligations by the general public and external stakeholders. Prior to joining the FDIC, he served as the Majority Communications Director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. He also served as the Deputy Press Secretary for U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby (AL). Mr. Gray holds a degree in political science from the University of Colorado.

Lyndon B. Johnson was right in secretly predicting that the handouts in the War On Poverty would create a permanent underclass who would become slaves on the Democrat Plantation, and which would keep them voting Democrat for decades. I have no problem with LBJ trying to buy votes, like so many other politicians, except that they have been buying those Democrat votes with my taxpayer money. Should have known that liberals would never spend their own money when they could use other people's money.

First, the Democrats and Republicans are different “sides” of the Welfare / Warfare state.
Second, the R’s are responsible for the Federal Department of “Education”.
Third, the R’s and D’s “log roll” welfare for Crony Capitalism and “bring home the bacon”.
Neither side of this coin gives a rat’s tush about anything other than power and control.
I feel for future generations that will suffer by what has been done to this great land since the 1860 / 1913 / 1960 Constitutional and non-Constitutional changes.
For my part, I’m sorry I wasn’t smart enough, eloquent enough, or determined enough to change anything.
