POSITRACTION: Are we hardwired with instinctive empathy

10 Weird Ways Your Brain Is Tricking You

#4 Sympathetic Pain

Have you ever heard seen someone slam their foot in the door and winced in pain even though nothing happened to you? Or just heard a story of someone getting hurt and had the same experience? That’s sympathetic pain. The researchers who studied this used MRI machines to test how subjects’ brains reacted when looking at faces with certain expressions, and when making those expressions. What they found is that the brain displays the same activity in either case. The part of the brain responsible for this is called the “mirror area” and scientists believe we have something called “mirror neurons,” which are responsible for creating a sympathetic response. Essentially, humans are hardwired to think we are feeling the same things as other people—essentially a very strong version of instinctive empathy.

*** end quote ***

Is this akin to husbands getting morning sickness or cravings?

Could it be that the Creator or the Universe has hardcoded empathy into our DNA?

Perhaps, humanity if free from all the incorrect paradigms and memes that we’ve accumulated over the eons could be amazing. Or have those errors been “bred” into us. Like the learned “weakness” of the huge elephant bound by a slender rope.

What do we really know? And we don’t know what we don’t know even though we think we know.

Too much for this fat old white guy injineer to know.

YMMV

As Carey visited Lexington in anticipation of his July 1 start date, he began thinking about liberal arts and careers, especially in light of Transy's enthusiastic alumni base. He calls his new plan 100 Doors to Success: matching every freshman with a Transy alumnus who can guide each student from a liberal arts education to a career.

Carey has an extensive background in liberal arts: He majored in economics at Vassar College, then was hired by Fordham University straight out of graduate school with a doctorate in philosophy. I'm a Swedish guy which, about three years ago, decided to experience the college life in NYC. Since then, Manhattan College has been my home, running has been my addiction, and discovering this city has been my mission. I will spend most of this coming summer in New Delhi, India, where I will intern. The rest of it will be split between Sweden and NY. This is my side of life.

The semester is coming to an end and finals week is approaching. Slowly but surely I can feel how people around me start freaking out about what is to come. Me myself, not so much. Yet, that is. I’m just happy that after this is over, I get to go back to Sweden. Before I get back, more than nine months will have passed since the last time I walked the streets which I once called home. I do miss it a lot. But I will only have three weeks to spend there before I’m off to New Delhi, India, where I will spend two months interning for an Indian corporation. Or that is if everything goes according to plan. Hopefully it does. I cannot wait for that adventure. After India; New York and Manhattan College will be waiting for me, I’ve got one last semester before I’m done with by Bachelor degree.

About

Once upon a time, a perfect little child was born in the small-town of Sala (once the capital of Sweden). His name was Mikael. Mikael grew and grew, and as he grew he found out that he had a talent to run really fast for a really long time. He then got an opportunity to attend a running high school in Sollentuna, a suburb of Stockholm. There in the foreign city, at an age of 16, he realized that there was a world beyond the streets he grew up on. Say whaaaaaaat?! He thought and pondered what to do with his life, and after four years he decided to buy a flight ticket to the jungle, the concrete jungle. While walking around this somewhat treeless jungle he saw a really nice concrete hut. He decided to move in. Nearby was a college, Manhattan College, which he decided to attend, and run for their Track & Field team. There he fell in love with the mondo tracks of Draddy Gymnasium, the green grass of the schools’ quad and the ancient books in club O’Malley.

Now, he only have on more semester at this wonderful college and then he’ll be kicked out into something called the job market. He does not know much about this so called job market, but apparently it is not all too nice to newcomers. Therefore Mikael will go to India over the summer for a preview of what is to come.

Here, you will be able to follow Mikael on his adventures, in New York, in Sweden, in India, or wherever else he goes.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Catholic educators will focus on the partnerships between grade schools and universities in a day of discussions and presentations in southwest Ohio.

The University of Dayton is hosting its third annual Catholic education summit Monday, with some 140 people expected to take part on campus. The school says 16 archdioceses and dioceses will be represented, from as far south as Nashville, Tennessee, and as far north as Hamilton, Ontario. Loyola of Chicago and Manhattan College are among universities and other higher education organizations participating.

Susan Ferguson, director of UD's Center for Catholic Education, says teachers, pastors, school officials and others are coming from a variety of school settings. Topics include essential Catholic curriculum, academic excellence, Catholic culture and identity and operational vitality.

What Is the Best Type of Feeder for My Application?
July 22, 2014 0

*** begin quote ***

There are many types of feeders available today. The most widely used include rotary valves, vibratory trays/tubes, belts, and screw feeders. The type of feeder to be selected for a particular application is dependant upon several factors. First, it is essential to clearly define the application parameters. These include the feed rate range, accuracy requirements, temperature and/or pressure considerations, possible dimensional restraints, the type of system used to get the material to the feeder, and to what downstream equipment the feeder will discharge. Then, it is essential to define the characteristics of the material to be fed. Establishing these parameters will reduce the available feeder types that are applicable to your specific application.

JFOUND: Cruz-Brown, Maribel [MC2000] NYPA 3/21/14

NYPA Recognizes its Women in Engineering: Maribel Cruz-Brown

Throughout March, we’ll be posting a series of interviews with NYPA’s female engineers in honor of Women’s History Month. Today’s entry features a Q&A session with NYPA Economic Development & Energy Efficiency Program Manager Maribel Cruz-Brown.

1. How did you enter the engineering field? How did you decide on your specialty?

I really enjoyed Math and Science in high school and received a partial scholarship to attend Manhattan College. During my college search, I was informed that an Engineering Degree would serve me well if I wanted to enter into any other career choice later on. They were right.
Maribel Cruz-Brown

2. Did you have a female engineer as a mentor?

I had interned all through college but didn’t come across any other female engineers until my first job out of college with Syska Hennessy Group. My aunts and uncles went to great schools like NYU and Yale. They were amazing role models for me, and I have great female engineering role models here at NYPA.

3. What makes you proud to work at NYPA?

This organization thrives because of the contributions from entry level to executive management. Over the past 14 years, I have seen how reliable public power and energy efficiency upgrades have real, positive impacts on NY communities.

4. What things do you love most about engineering?

Most engineers say problem solving skills and I agree but it goes deeper than that. Engineering is a resolution to a need, it is an approach. I studied Mechanical Engineering so to me it’s all about gears, motors and turbines making things happen.

5. What project are you most proud of?

My first energy efficiency projects at NYPA have set the tone for my career here. I began my career with NYPA at NYC and Westchester schools, hospitals and precincts. They called on my engineering knowledge, street smarts and negotiating skills. I learned to maneuver through challenges with customers, public officials and contractors.

6. Did you face any obstacles in becoming an engineer?

I always had to balance school while working close to full time my entire college career. I’m currently earning my M.B.A, and I have two young sons – so life is a little busy at the moment.

7. What valuable lessons have you learned as your career as a female engineer has evolved?

Always be professional and mindful of your contributions and you will be successful. Not everyone we work with has been exposed to the diversity of the engineering world of today. I had a customer ask me if I had really gone to school for engineering, why I chose my nontraditional profession, where I had studied, etc. By the end of our meeting he was eager to proceed with the recommendations I had presented for his town.

8. What advice would you offer young women considering engineering as a profession?

I have been speaking to elementary and high school students for 10 years. My message is still the same. If she (or he) has a passion for math/science, want to work on projects that have local impact and is ready to put the time in then the engineering field is for them!

9. If you had to use one word to describe your opinion of the engineering profession, what would it be?

Symphony. A collaboration of instruments, players, working at different levels to create a beautiful product.

10. What is one thing about yourself that most people would find surprising?

Years ago I wanted to create and be the host of a Home Improvement Show demonstrating to women how to DIY.

Good Morning All,

Tom has met and spoken with some of them and shares that it is times like these that they need our prayers more than ever. As some of them reside on the Gaza Strip there are no doubt some that reside on the Israel side and clearly impacted by the incoming Rockets. There are stories there that have not surfaced and we pray for the safety of them as well. Please keep them in your prayers as we pray for reason and God's Love to prevail. Thank you Tom. God Bless.

Dear Graduates, Friends and Supporters of Bethlehem University,

The war in Gaza rages on, and Bethlehem University can only offer prayers for the people of Gaza and its 435 graduates, many of whom have been hiding in their homes, schools, mosques and in churches since the start of this offensive. Many more have no place to hide, but on the streets where as reported the stench of death kills.

We are very concerned about our graduates in Gaza as many have not responded to our contacts through social media and phone.

We are very lucky to have received as Bethlehem University many messages inquiring about our safety here in Bethlehem. For all of you, we say THANK YOU, but do remember us and our graduates in Gaza in your prayers.

Team members of the Advancement Office at Bethlehem University have been able to connect with several of our graduates.

Rana Al-Sayegh, BU'99, with her 4 children were hiding in the corridor of her flat when we rang her yesterday morning. "I am not sure how to keep my children safe, several buildings around me where all brought to the ground... I am so worried, but happy that you called me," Rana said and has asked we pray for them.

Our Vice Chancellor, Brother Peter Bray, was able to speak over the phone to the mother of Berlanty Azzam, a BU Graduate of 2010, who is currently working in the US. Berlanty was not allowed to continue her studies at Bethlehem University by the Israeli Authority simply because she came from Gaza, but Bethlehem University enabled her to graduate through distance learning while in Gaza.

Berlanty's mother asked Brother Peter to pray for her and her family. "Our lives are unbearable, we are very scared, and several houses in our neighborhood have completely vanished".

Mohammed Abu Hawila, BU '89, who is an UNRWA School Deputy Principal in Gaza City, told us that while his immediate family is safe, several of his friends have perished, and many more have been seriously injured. He told us: "a lot of people moved to live in the school classes where I work. As many as 60 people are living in a small room in a very difficult situation, may God help them."

To all our graduates in the Gaza Strip, we are praying for you and hope this will come to an end very soon.

To all our friends and supporters, we ask you to pray for the people of Gaza at these hard times, and we also ask you to pray for us so that Bethlehem University may continue to be a "Beacon of Hope and an Oasis of Peace" in this Holy, but troubled Land.

Brother Stephen Tuohy
Vice President for Advancement

ENDNOTE: The ancient just war tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas

2014-Jul-26

http://www.lewrockwell.com/2014/07/thomas-dilorenzo/the-american-religion-of-violence/

The Birth of America’s “Religion of Violence”
By Thomas DiLorenzo
July 7, 2014

*** begin quote ***

Laurence Vance has coined the word “warvangelical” to describe so-called evangelical Christians who are obsessed with supporting all of the state’s wars and all of the death, destruction, and mayhem that they entail.  They ignore the ancient just war tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas, among others, and simply support all war and all military aggression – as long as the U.S. government is the aggressor.

*** and ***

An illustration of this crazed, murderous philosophy that is offered by Rothbard is a congratulatory letter to Woodrow Wilson from his son-in-law, fellow pietist “progressive” William Gibbs McAdoo, the Secretary of the Treasury, for having plunged America into the European War.  “You have done a great job nobly!“, wrote McAdoo. I firmly believe that it is God’s will that America should do this transcendent service for humanity throughout the world and that you are His chosen instrument.” There were more than sixteen million deaths in World War I, including some 7 million civilians.

Such “religious” fanaticism provided a moral cover of sorts for the armaments industry and others who supported (and support) war for monetary reasons only.  Some things never change.

*** end quote ***

I remember studying St. Thomas Aquinas and the Just War in grammar school.

Finally a topic I could relate to. I loved Cowboy and War Movies.

The Brothers were (i think) all WW2 and Korean vets. And they had a very unique insight and urge that this was one of the more important things we could learn.

And then came VietNam.

Early on, I was a chicken hawk. But very very quickly, I became anti-war. As more people I knew went into the meat grinder, or went to Canada, and the bodies mounted up, I realize the Aquinas was of so right.

Even today, the only truly Peace Candidate, Ron Paul, was sneered and labeled a “crazy isolationist”. Our fellow alum, Rudy was destroyed by Ron Paul and “blowback”.

All for naught.

War, more war, and tyranny.

Where will it all end?

The best we can hope for is peaceful secession; the worst is more and escalating violence.

Argh!
