POSITRACTION: Living repositories of centuries of therapeutic wisdom

Medicine Men, Machetes and Centuries of Healing (Op-Ed)
Mark Plotkin, President, Amazon Conservation Team | April 08, 2014 02:43am ET

*** begin quote ***

What's wrong with your foot?" asked the medicine man as I ducked into his grass hut to escape the tropical downpour. He could see that I walked with a slight limp.

Like many an aging athlete, I had injured myself while training for a hike. I knew I had to condition myself to be able to walk 50 miles carrying a backpack at 9,000 feet. So strenuous was the training that I hurt my foot and had to hobble into the offices of physicians, orthopedists and chiropractors — in short, anyone who might heal my affliction. I tried massage, ice packs, heating pads and whirlpool baths. I took aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, prescription pain pills and a cortisone injection in search of relief. The pain was reduced to the point where it became bearable, and I completed the hike. But I felt my injury every step of the way. In the ongoing debate over the enormous health-care costs in the United States, Americans can learn much by looking southward at the tropical American countries where shamans reside and practice their healing.

Like physicians, shamans are not infallible and vary in abilities. I knew this shaman — Amasina of the Trio tribe in southern Suriname — to be a master of his craft. He looked up from a fire he was stoking, over which he was boiling local herbs in a battered old aluminum pot. The smell of the plant potion filled the dwelling as I entered. Amasina wasted no time on pleasantries, even though he had not seen me for almost a year.

"Take off your shoe," he ordered, and I complied. He examined my foot carefully, and then issued another order: "Give me your machete!"

I removed the machete from my belt and passed it to him. With one clean stroke, he sliced a fuzzy fern off the bark of a nearby palm tree, carried it back to the hut and threw it directly into the flames. After less than a minute, the shaman snatched the fern from the fire and applied it to the base of my foot, causing me to howl with pain.

When both my foot and the fern had cooled, however, the pain had disappeared. He then threw the fern in another pot of water, warmed it over the fire, and had me drink the entire potion.

The pain in my foot went away. And for seven months, there was no pain. Then I returned to the jungle for another successful treatment.

To some, the term "shaman" may conjure up images of tricksters more than healers. But authentic shamans are masters of a sacred craft, living repositories of centuries of therapeutic wisdom.

*** end quote ***

Would you say that the “First World” suffers from the hubris of thinking we know it all?

How little we do know!

I watched my late wife suffer and die while the “modern medic men” had no clue.

One of the docs has the humility to say to me after she passed: “Case like Ev’s, remind me how little I know.”

And, I realized we don’t know what we don’t know.

I ofter cite the JoHari window. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johari_window So when I face a problem with someone, I first seek to find out what they “see” and then wonder what is in Quadrant Four — the stuff that neither of us “sees”.

One wonders how much these shamans know that could help and save.

Humbles me to think of that.

http://1stholegolfleague.blogspot.com/2013/09/2013-north-yonkers-scholarship.html

Boys from the 1st Hole Golf League

The league was founded in 1990 by Rich McSpedon and Walter Ineson. Most of the 32 members were born and raised in Yonkers, New York, and they play at the Dunwoodie Golf Course. Dunwoodie is a public course managed by Westchester County and it is located on Yonkers Avenue off of the Saw Mill River and Cross County parkways. The purpose of this blog is to post specific league news, general golf news, and reviews of golf courses and equipment.

2013 North Yonkers Scholarship Foundation + 5 times $5 = $27.50

*** begin quote ***

Walter "Goose" Ineson was another sportsman from North Yonkers who was a sandlot baseball star at Lennon Park. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Gorton High School, and Manhattan College. While in the Air Force, he learned to play golf and he later founded the Boys from the First Hole Golf League with Richie "Gook" McSpedon. He also assisted Gianelli with the creation of the North Yonkers Scholarship Foundation and the golf outing during his lifetime.

An engineer by trade, a great golfer due to constant practice and reflective study, and humanitarian by nature, Ineson was one of the kindest and supportive people one could ever meet. Last night, Bill Regan, a former deputy mayor of Yonkers, and a golf league member himself, indicated that the league lost some of its collective mojo and a little bit of its spiritual soul when Ineson went to heaven.

Not surprisingly, Ineson was a close friend of both Gianelli and Lewer.

Port Authority honcho dead from heart attack
By Philip Messing
July 1, 2014 | 5:32pm

*** begin quote ***

Robert Van Etten, the inspector general for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, died Monday at his New Jersey home of an apparent heart attack, law enforcement sources said. He was 70.

He joined the PA in 1996 and earned $208,468 yearly as the agency’s top corruption-fighter, overseeing a staff that probed corruption involving vendor contracts and suspected misconduct by civilian PA workers.

During his tenure with the PA, he created the Fraud Prevention Program for the World Trade Center Reconstruction Projects, which was designed to uncover possible waste or criminal behavior involving an array of large capital construction projects, including the New Goethals Bridge; the Moynihan Station Development Project; the Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Project and the Hurricane Sandy Recovery and Resiliency Program.

More recently, his office assumed the management of three Port Authority Police Department units: internal affairs; civilian complaint investigations and absence control.

Van Etten previously held a number of positions with the Department of the Treasury, including special agent-in-charge, New York Office, for the U.S. Customs Service.

He also helped found the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) in 1977, an organization that now represents more than 25,000 federal law enforcement officers from over 65 different agencies.

“Please keep our fallen hero, Bob, and his family in your thoughts and prayers…God doesn’t make them any better, and Bob was the epitome of honor for our noble profession,” wrote FLEOA President Jon Adler, in an email to his members.

A graduate of Manhattan College, Van Etten also completed the Senior Executive Fellows Program, at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 10 County Road, Tenafly, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Theresa, and two adult sons, Robert and David.

JEMAIL: Yamaoka, Joseph (MC1956) want the borders secured

EMAIL FROM Yamaoka, Joseph (MC1956)

Dear Friends,

"The man charged with raping a woman in her Rittenhouse Square apartment last weekend was caught illegally entering the country from Mexico last year, according to customs officials."

That is the first paragraph of the following article.

http://articles.philly.com/2014-06-27/news/50887813_1_u-s-immigration-honduras-criminal-charges

ALTHOUGH HE WAS DEPORTED, HE REENTERED THE COUNTRY (IT IS NOT NOW KNOWN HOW. ---ANY GUESSES?)

How many other violent illegal immigrants like him are in this country?

What do you think the odds are that a 9/11 type terrorist has already illegally gained entry across our borders?

If you also believe that our borders need to be secured, please send a copy of this article to all of your friends.

Thank you.

Joe Y.

[JR: The situation is a national disaster and disgrace. As a little L libertarian, I think that good people who want to work here should be welcomed at the border, “serviced” (i.e., physical; documented; fingerprinted; DNA-ed; and given a short orientation), and issued a “green card”. Criminals should be booted quickly. Those, who want to sponge, also booted. It would be much more humane and we need folks who want to work hard, play by the rules, and live in peace. imho! ]

GOOGLE+: Martone, Richard [MC????] imagines a debt free America

Martone, Richard [MC????]

http://consumerist.com/2014/07/03/one-university-saved-students-31m-in-student-loans-by-sending-them-a-letter/

Imagine that! When students actually understood how much their monthly payments would be for borrowing money they borrowed less.

Imagine the potential impact if this idea caught on. I'm not an economist (thanks, God!), but I wonder. If more young people had lower loan burdens imagine how many more starter homes, cars, appliances and other consumer goods would be bought.

Imagine if a million kids moved out of their parents' basements.

The economy would explode. Jobs would be created.

All from one simple decision.

Maybe it's time for a national mass intervention. "Just say no"?

Imagine if colleges had to compete for a smaller, more frugal target market? Maybe they'd actually lower tuition and trim their bloated faculties.

Still, I'd bet those who profit from student loans would hate to see their gravy train slowed down.
I believe this subject demands honest conversation.

I could be wrong.

Mayer Brown bolsters global IP practice with addition of Colleen Tracy as partner in New York

Jul 2, 2014
IPFrontline

Mayer Brown announced that prominent patent litigator Colleen Tracy has joined the firm in New York as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice. Previously, she was a partner at Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto and served as that firm’s first female managing partner.

Ms. Tracy has extensive experience in all aspects of complex patent litigation in the pharmaceutical, chemical, biological, and biotechnological fields, representing industry leaders in litigations involving pharmaceutical compounds and compositions. Ms. Tracy also has extensive experience in litigating Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) cases brought under the Hatch-Waxman Act. Additionally, Ms. Tracy has conducted IP due diligence and has provided licensing and IP counsel to clients.

“Colleen’s significant successful first-chair trial experience for pharmaceutical and life sciences clients will bring additional depth and breadth to the firm’s growing IP practice,” said John Mancini, co-leader of the firm’s global Intellectual Property practice. “This is another exciting step in the strategic expansion of our global IP practice to better serve our clients in complex and high-stakes disputes.” Most recently, an 11-lawyer team led by partner Jamie Beaber joined the firm’s IP practice in DC and Chicago.

“Joining Mayer Brown was a natural next step for me in my career, given the firm’s strong capabilities in the life sciences arena and its commitment to growing its IP practice,” Ms. Tracy said. “I am thrilled to be part of such an accomplished and skilled group of IP professionals.”

Ms. Tracy is consistently recognized as a leading lawyer in IP litigation. In 2014 she was honored as an “IP Star” by Managing Intellectual Property. Previously, she was selected as an IP “Rising Star” by Law360 for her work fending off “generic challengers’ attempts to break patents for cutting-edge drugs and biotech treatments held by big-name clients” and was named a “Woman Worth Watching” by Profiles in Diversity Journal.

“Colleen’s impressive and widely acknowledged acumen in patent litigation will complement our existing robust global IP practice and provide significant value to our clients here and across our global network,” said Richard Spehr, Partner-in-Charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office.

As an active member of her community, Ms. Tracy is affiliated with several bar associations and industry organizations. Notably, she is on the board of advisors for the Women in Law Empowerment Forum and Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology.

ENDNOTE: It's "murder" writ large

So That's Why They Kept the Drone Kill Memo Secret
By David Swanson
War Is A Crime.org
June 25, 2014

*** begin quote ***

The memo considers a section of the U.S. code dealing with the murder of a U.S. citizen by another U.S. citizen abroad, drawing on another section that defines murder as “the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought.”

David Barron, the memo’s author, needed a loophole to make murder-by-missile a lawful killing rather than an unlawful killing, so he pulls out the “public authority justification” under which the government gets to use force to enforce a law. It’s a novel twist, though, for the government to get to use force to violate the law, claiming the violation is legal on the Nixonian basis that it is the government doing it.

*** end quote ***

This is lipstick on the pig.

If I as an individual can’t murder you, then how can I authorize my “representatives” (n.b, the quotes because they don’t represent me) to do what I can’t?

Here’s a real simple explanation of why this is immoral.

As well as ineffective, and inefficient

Argh!
