3D Printers for Medical Use
# - # - # - # - #

[JR: I’m “coaching” a young lady at work in the late stages of getting her Masters degree. She had to make a short video — less than five minutes — for her “technology class”. Together we arrived at the astonishing work being done in 3D printing. As you’d expect, once she start to “dig into”, she was launched. I’m astonished that: (a) the life saving technology that “God wrought”; and (b) that the FDA gave approval. Any way, this week’s positive presentation is her class video. Amazing technology. Amazing story. Amazing results.]

Girls track and field: Sydney McLaughlin of Union Catholic is the State Athlete of the Year

McLaughlin comes from some great running roots.

Her brother, Taylor, a junior at Union Catholic, won two national titles earlier this month on relays and earned All-America status by placing fifth in the 400 in North Carolina. Her parents, Willie and Mary McLaughlin, were track stars. Willie was a multiple All-American at Manhattan College in the 400, and Mary was a high school track star.

A travel writer based outside of New York City, I first fell in love with travel at a young age, and since then, have taken any and every opportunity to see the world. Having set foot on six continents, twenty-seven countries, and twenty-five states, my current goal is to visit Antarctica before turning thirty at the end of 2014, and to experience more of my home country, in the meantime. My wish is to inspire others, no matter what age, to go out there and see the world.

Manhattan Announces 2014 Athletic Hall of Fame Class

The Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members on November 8.
Courtesy Manhattan College

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College is proud to announce its eight-member Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014. Seven former student-athletes, including four candidates in their first year of eligibility, and one coach will be inducted at a formal dinner on Saturday, November 8.

The 2014 Hall of Fame honorees are:

Gerald Buckley ’64 (track & field)
Patrick Callahan ’99 (baseball)
LaCole Fields ’00 (track & field)
Luis Flores ’04 (men’s basketball)
Thomas Jacob Freeman ’04 (track & field)
Steve Lappas, coach (men’s basketball)
Rosalee Mason ’04 (women’s basketball)
Nicholas Silva ’04 (men’s lacrosse)

“The Manhattan College Athletic Department is pleased to welcome these eight very accomplished contributors into our Hall of Fame,” Director of Athletics Noah LeFevre said. “The diversity of the 2014 class in sport disciplines, contributing roles and generations is a credit to the well-roundedness and longevity of our overall athletic program success.”

Jerry Buckley (posthumous) was a valuable middle distance runner on Head Coach George Eastment’s teams, serving as co-captain his senior year. He helped the two-mile relay squad capture first place at both the Millrose Games and Metropolitan Indoor Championships in 1962, and he took third in the 880 yards at the 1963 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships.

In 1997, Pat Callahan became the first Jaspers baseball player ever to earn Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year honors after leading the league with a .381 batting average. He posted a .317 career batting average and was Manhattan’s all-time leader in hits (147) at the time of his graduation.

LaCole Fields set four Manhattan records in the shot put and weight throw during her career, and still holds the indoor mark in the shot put. She was named All-East seven times and won a total of 13 individual MAAC championships. During the 2000 outdoor season, Fields captured the MAAC title and scored at the ECAC Championships in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Manhattan’s all-time leading scorer (2,046 points), Luis Flores was named MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Tournament MVP in both 2002-03 and 2003-04. He led the Jaspers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004, when Manhattan upset Florida in the Round of 64. Flores was inducted into the MAAC Honor Roll at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during the 2014 MAAC Tournament.

Jake Freeman is the only eight-time All-American in the history of the track & field program. He won a pair of NCAA Championships at Manhattan (2003 indoor weight throw, 2004 outdoor hammer throw). Freeman also captured four consecutive IC4A titles in the hammer throw and is the NCAA record-holder in the event. He finished third in the hammer throw at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships.

Steve Lappas coached the Jaspers for four seasons from 1988-89 to 1991-92. He led Manhattan back to prominence during his tenure, capped by a 25-9 campaign in 1991-92. That season, the Jaspers reached the MAAC championship game for the first time and made their first postseason appearance in nearly 20 years, reaching the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

A three-time First Team All-MAAC selection, Rosalee Mason is the MAAC’s all-time leading rebounder (1,217). She’s also second on Manhattan’s all-time scoring list (1,875). In 2002-03, Mason led the Jaspers to both the MAAC regular season and tournament championships, and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Nick Silva was named MAAC Player of the Year in 2002, as he led the Jaspers to their first-ever MAAC championship. He’s second on Manhattan’s all-time assists chart (84) and has the two highest single-season assist totals in program history. Silva is also third on the all-time list with 155 career points.

The 36th Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 8. There will be a Mass in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers at 4 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony and dinner in the Great Room of the new Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons at 5 p.m. Registration information will be available in the fall.
With the election of this year’s class, the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame now consists of 237 members. For more information on the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame, please click here.

Where will it all stop?

Somebody please point out the justification for government control of language. Did we all become so weak minded overnight that the mere sight of a word will cause us all to become alcoholic, cigarette smoking, gun wielding sex-shoppists? And more to the point, will we all look fucking lovely as we undergo our metamorphosis? No, of course not. This is the work of a group of self centered, self important, people on a mission to mould the world into their personal vision of ideal.

One thing we absolutely must resist is a move towards this kind of tyranny. The people who successfully stole all public spaces for themselves are now coming for your language. It’s time to wake up and say “stop the madness”. We have seen tobacco control lie, cheat, and even attempt to rewrite history on occasion. Now they want to rewrite the dictionary. This has to end. These selfish psychopaths have to be stopped.

Young, old and in between, these players are having a ball

*** begin quote ***

These leagues, in which most if not all play simply for fun and some an insatiable will to win, attract former collegiate standouts such as 25-year-old lad Sean Russell of New City, but also feature such diehards as 41-year-old landscape businessman Cain Mazariego of Blauvelt to 60-something legends Joe Moger of Congers and David Hoshia of Airmont.

“I just hope to can last as long as those guys, yeah, if my muscles and joints hold up,” offered Russell, who competes each Sunday with El Roble at Haverstraw Middle School following an illustrious career with the Jaspers of Manhattan College.

Russell started his career playing with Ramapo Valley Soccer Club, of which his dad, Glyn, an amateur player in England, was a former president. Russell the Younger also played two years with a men’s semi-pro team in Clarkstown, and hopes to continue playing when he resumes his travels overseas.

“I went to Turkey and tried to play pro, but now I’m just playing for fun,” said Russell. “It just didn’t work out, and it was kind of disappointing, but it was just amazing to try out. I still love it; I still love to play. I’m self-employed and eventually want to travel and play in foreign countries where I can. My best friend in high school, who did score the winning goal (in state championship game), Kyle Hoffer, is playing in the USL with the Rochester Rhinos.”

Hoffer’s goal, by the way, which lifted Albertus Magnus HS to the title, was assisted by Russell,

Russell noted he also used to play indoor soccer, “with old guys like Joe (Moger),” in Bardonia.
“They’re good,” says Russell, in due deference to his many elders. “They’re smart players, know how to move the ball. They have so much experience, especially Joe, he’s a great guy.”

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) adds a new cause

Good Afternoon All,

I ask for your prayers for a dear friend and Cousin in Ireland, Rosemary Reilly. We have just spoken with her and she has informed us that she has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The MDs have performed a Lumpectomy and have sent it off to the US for further Diagnoses. They await results as to Radiation needs and such. When we were in Ireland Rosemary walked us just about everywhere in Dublin and was totally indefatigable, we consequently were as well in order to keep up with her. When she visited with us for a week this past Christmas, we took her everywhere by car which she said she could get used to. She lives and has a business in Blackrock, Dublin. If she has to have Radiation, the Hospital she will go to is a 40 minute walk away and she looks forward to doing that if necessary. We love her. Please keep Rosemary in your prayers, she is Peggy's Cousin but is very dear family to me, Scott and Melissa as well. Thank you. God Bless.

JHQ: Students become alumni

2014-Jun-27

http://itsblog.manhattan.edu/2014/06/jaspernet-account-enhancements.html

Account Lifecycle

As students become alumni, we’ve made it easier to transition your JasperNet account for use “after Manhattan” by keeping a single username to access JasperNet systems.  While you may not have access to all of the resources that you enjoyed as a student, alumni accounts will still have access to some campus resources including self-service.  For members of the community that take on more than one role, such as an employee taking classes or an alum returning to Manhattan for a career or to further their education, a single username will now allow access to the appropriate resources based on your role(s) at the College.

As a result of this enhanced account lifecycle, a standard naming convention will be used for ALL accounts generated after 7/1/2014 (student, alumni, or employee).  ITS is working closely with key campus offices to ensure new students and employees are provided their JasperNet account information quickly, easily, and securely.

ENDNOTE: Pope Francis, the Mafia, drug prohibition

2014-Jun-28

The Volokh Conspiracy
Pope Francis denounces the Mafia, but praises drug prohibition – the main source of the Mafia’s income
BY ILYA SOMIN June 21 at 6:51 PM

*** begin quote ***

Today, Pope Francis denounced the Mafia and excommunicated its members from the Catholic Church. But just yesterday, he praised drug prohibition and refused to support any “yielding or compromise” on the issue of legalization. There is an obvious tension between these two positions. As the CNN article on the pope’s excommunication of the Mafia notes, the Sicilian Mafia – like many other organized crime and terrorist organizations – gets most of its revenue from the illegal drug trade.

*** and ***

But the drug policies he supports are a major cause of the evil that he condemns.

*** end quote ***

Interesting that the Pope doesn’t stick to faith and morals.

Once he ventures into politics, economics, and policies, he demonstrates cluelessness.

Unfortunately, how many lives have been lost or ruined due to the stupid “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs"!

It didn’t work for alcohol. So why does ANYONE think it would be different for “drugs”.
