So the Petersons contacted Dr. Glenn Green at the University of
Michigan, who specializes in conditions like Garrett's. He teamed
up with Scott Hollister, a biomedical engineer who runs the
university's 3-D Printing Lab, to create a remarkable solution to
Garrett's problem — a device that will hold open Garrett's
windpipe until it's strong enough to work on its own.
Instead of shooting ink onto a flat page to print words or
pictures, 3-D printers use other material, such as plastic or
metal, to create three-dimensional objects.
"You build up layers until you have the complete 3-D structure,"
Hollister says.
3-D printers have been used to build jewelry, art and even guns.
But Hollister is using the technology to create medical devices.
He uses a 3-D printer that melts particles of plastic dust with a
laser. He has already built a jawbone for a patient in Italy and
has helped another baby with a condition similar to Garrett's. But
Garrett is a lot of sicker and his condition is a lot more
complicated.

Passed away of cardiac arrest after a day of fishing –doing what he loved only second to his beloved Children Ian, Charlie and Maggie and his wife of 22 years, Tracy Mahoney. He also leaves behind his mother Kathleen Kleinsmith of Alexandria, Virginia, his sister Katie Csobaji of Austin, Texas, his Father in Law Richard Mahoney and Mother in law Therese Mahoney of Red Hook, New York; his sisters in law Mary Harrison, Kathleen Mahoney and his brothers in law Michael Mahoney, Patrick Mahoney and Timothy Mahoney, their spouses and many loved nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Gene grew up in Laurel, NY and on the farms and beaches of eastern Long Island where he developed a lifelong love for the water and fishing. At an early age, he could identify many species of fish, knew the tide cycles and had a natural curiosity that led him to figure out exactly what the horseshoe crabs were doing on the beach.
He attended SUNY Cortland where he met Tracy and graduated with a degree in Biology. After college he followed his passion for the sea and became a lobsterman with a good friend. Together they traveled the waters of the East Coast, setting traps and selling their catch to restaurants in the northeast. He and Tracy married in 1991 while he attended graduate school – being awarded Masters Degrees in environmental engineering and civil engineering from Manhattan College.
While raising their family, Gene became an avid cook – reinventing many favorites with a special spin. He shared his love of fishing with the children and taught them how to ski and swim. He worked as an engineer for HydroQual, J. Flynn Engineering and then opened his own firm, K&H Consulting in 2004. K&H Consulting serviced many of Manhattan’s most prestigious addresses and churches.
Gene will be missed for his culinary talents, professional guidance, friendship and contagious smile. He was a good father, husband, friend, and trusted professional.
Gene will be remembered in a service on Sunday June 1, 2014

Thank you to Webster Bank for hosting this month's CEO Luncheon! We were fortunate enough to sit down with Joe Savage, President of Webster Bank, and learn about his journey in banking.
Joe is from a hard working class family in New Jersey. He is one of seven children and education was always very important to his parents. They did everything possible to be able to afford his education starting with a Catholic High School. Since Catholic Schools are no small fee, his mother had to ask the Parish for a grant, which she did receive that allowed Joe to attend for a lower cost. Joe received a track scholarship to Manhattan College after his high school graduation. He loved to run and eventually made it to Nationals as well as qualified to run in the Olympic Trials. Although he did not win it was still a great opportunity!
Along with his own eagerness and drive, Joe was raised with strong family values. He married young and started his own family. He knew that he needed to provide for them by any means necessary like his parents did for him throughout his life.
Joe's first job was as a teacher for a few years. Once he realized that teaching was not going to pay the bills, he started to attend night school for his MBA at Seton Hall University. In order to afford to go to classes he was coaching on the side. "I would wake up, go to work at the Federal Reserves Bank in NY, after work I would coach and then get home late at night. Then do it all over again the next day. I could never do that kind of schedule now, but when your young and have the drive to take care of your family you make it work."
It seemed almost impossible that Joe could be so successful at work while he had so much going on at home. "The hallmark of my success is that I would always do the right thing at the right time for the right reason. Do the right thing even when no one is looking and people start to take you under their wing and help you along the way. I believe very strongly in this which allowed me to start being successful at work." said Joe.
Joe's banking career began when he took a job working at Charmant Bank and he stayed there for the next ten years. Joe then transitioned and founded [Joe Savage Luncheon] a telecommunications company. "Telecommunications is a great industry, but at that time I was a few years to early in developing that business. I had family needs, and needed to pay the bills so I sold that company and moved to Denver, CO for 8 years." There Joe was the Vice President of the Communications and Energy Banking Group for CoBank. "I turned my hardships into something I really wanted to do and that propelled me forward and I found motivation to keep going."
In 2002 Jim Smith, a good friend of Joe's who happened to be chairman and CEO of Webster Bank, told him that he needed to come to Webster for a job opening. "I thought he was crazy! Why would I leave Denver to come to Connecticut" stated Joe. Since Joe is a very family orientated man, he knew that this opportunity would be a well providing position, Joe took the Head of Commercial Bank as his first job at Webster. "I eat, sleep and breath Webster values of converting customers to Webster and the client success in the market place. Believing in those values and being who I am at the work place, I was able to continue moving forward and eventually become President of Webster Bank. I had no idea that I would become a banker. If you asked me when I was younger what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have told you a track coach. I believe that if you are true to yourself at all times and have fun, good things will happen to you."
Joe closed the luncheon explaining what he thinks are the keys to success: "The best advice I can give to a young professional is to love what you do and be happy with who you are personally and professionally. Make sure that those qualities are apparent in all that you do. I encourage young professional involvement in the community because that is a way of gaining personal growth. Personal growth will dramatically influence your work. There is no personal growth in your comfort zone - challenge yourself and be you even when no one is looking."

Erin Dowling and Maxiel Peralta are third grade teachers in an integrated co-teaching class at PS 310 The Marble Hill School. PS 310 is a Title 1 school in Bronx, New York. Their class is made up of special education and general education students. Joseph L. Monteith began his law enforcement career in June of 1961 when he was appointed to the Suffolk County Police Department shortly after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Manhattan College. He would later (1979) receive a Master’s degree in Management from his alma mater. During the next 39 years, Joe Monteith served in every rank within the SCPD, rising to the highest uniformed rank, Chief of the Department in 1989. Recognized as a natural leader, Joe was nominated in 1975 to attend the 100th Session of the FBI National Academy. In 1995, he attended the 18th Session of the FBI’s National Executive Institute. Chief Monteith served on the Executive Board of the New York State and Eastern Canada Chapter (NYSEC) becoming Chapter President in 1990.
Later elected as the Section IV Representative to the National Board, he advanced through the Chairs, culminating with his Presidency in 1998. While not the first Associate from the New York State and Eastern Canada Chapter to hold the position of President of the National FBINAA, Joe’s term was marked by great innovation looking towards the challenges and demands of the approaching 21st Century. Suffice it to say that Chief Monteith is regarded by all of his law enforcement colleagues to be a true professional and a man of marked integrity. He has served and continues to serve on a number of boards of professional and charitable organizations. The quintessential gentleman, Chief Monteith serves as a role model for all graduates of the FBI National Academy.

Richard Francis Adolino, 80, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at his home.
He was born January 8, 1934, in New York and was the son of the late Frank and Jesumina Adolino.
Richard graduated from Manhattan College. He was a lieutenant JG in the U.S. Navy and served as the Separations Officer at the Norfolk Naval Base. Richard was a builder and developer in New York, Florida, Virginia Beach and Connecticut prior to moving to Harrisonburg twelve years ago.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
On October 1, 1960, he married Rose Coppola Adolino who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jessica Adolino and husband, Timothy DiNapoli, of Harrisonburg, and Christine Thompson and husband, Michael, of Timberville; and six grandchildren, Sarah, Emma, and Benjamin DiNapoli, and Luke, William and Jake Thompson.
His body will be cremated. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
A mass of the Resurrection will be held Friday, June 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament
Catholic Church in Harrisonburg with Father Joe Goldsmith officiating.

EDISON, N.J. – The MAAC Council of Presidents spring meetings concluded with a number of major issues announced, including support for NCAA Division I Restructuring, endorsement of league bylaws to accommodate ESPN3 school productions on the new ESPN3 MAAC branded channel and a major expansion of selected MAAC team championships to a six-team bracket format.
The presidents also were briefed on the planning for the 2015 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY including ticket pricing, sales plans, and VIP/Club seating sections. Also discussed were the MAAC’s Sports Graphics branding plan for the basketball championships including the new Horner MAAC playing floor.
The MAAC Committee on Athletic Administration’s major focus this academic year has been on a review of bracket size for MAAC team championships and maintenance of revenue flows to the league budget from championships operations. The MAAC championships, with expanded formats, will include baseball, softball, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.
“The Council of Presidents supported the athletic administrator’s bracket proposal noting the expanded championship opportunities will provide a beneficial experience to student-athletes, help member institutions maintain and build competitive teams, and be advantageous to the recruitment of qualified students,” noted MAAC Commissioner, Rich Ensor. “The six-team format was used for baseball and softball this spring and it resulted in greater fan interest as teams competed to the last weekend of regular season play to qualify for the MAAC championship.”
It was noted that the primary focus of MAAC coaches and student-athletes is participation in MAAC championships and an opportunity to qualify for NCAA automatic bids, which this expanded format now provides to a wider group of qualifying teams.
The presidents also supported a change in the hosting of these championships, agreeing with the athletic administrator’s recommendation to move away from pre-determined sites. As a result:
-Championships will generally be played at highest/higher seed host sites.
-Higher/highest seeds can only opt out of hosting in the case of an extenuating circumstance such as a facility conflict.
-Any member school’s facility used for regular season is eligible to host post-season competition.
In reviewing NCAA Governance Restructuring, the Council of Presidents generally supported the work of the NCAA Steering Committee while offering specific suggestions on elements of the plan related to representation on the proposed Board of Directors. The Presidents agreed to support a revised BOD composition that allows seats for BCS ‘power 5’ conferences with the other 12 seats divided among the remaining 27 DI conferences on a rotational basis (including the non-major FBS conferences).
The MAAC agreed to support restructuring because it provides the ‘power 5’ conferences with autonomous governance authority in return for all 32 conferences having inclusion in Division I and continued association with the Division I brand. The support was conditioned on two basic principles, first, that the MAAC continue to receive access to NCAA championships for its teams as it is currently provided within Division I and second, that the NCAA revenue sharing continue as it is currently distributed within the division.
The MAAC’s partnership with ESPN continues to grow and was reinforced by the Council of Presidents decision to allow for school produced ESPN3 games to be accessed through the MAAC Branded ESPN3 Channel. ESPN announced the rollout of the branded channel this winter. The MAAC Marketing Committee conducted an in-depth review of the ESPN3 School Production proposal that was presented to the league. The Council approved the committee’s recommendations that MAAC ESPN3 School Productions be provided access to MAAC Branded ESPN3 Channel. ESPN3 School Productions must follow MAAC branding requirements as outlined in revised MAAC bylaws and the MAAC will relinquish certain marketing/advertising rights in return for schools funding these additional broadcasts.
“The presidents agreed that the ESPN3 opportunity can provide long-term benefits to the league and member schools,” notes Commissioner Ensor. “Over time, as schools invest in infrastructure and staffing, it could become an economically efficient solution to distribute live content, serve fans, and expand academic opportunities for students seeking hands on experience in broadcast productions and sports journalism.”

James F. Feenan passed away on June 1, 2014 at age 78 after a short illness.
He grew up in The Bronx NY and attended All Hallows High School. He attended Manhattan College, Boston Law School & Fordham Law School.
He was a professional in commercial real estate; he worked for Colt, RCA, Equitable, G.E.Capital, Volkswagen and XEROX.
He served in the US Navy from 1954-1957 on the USS Norton; a guided missile vessel and as well in Guam.
He was predeceased by his parents Herbert & Louise Feenan, and Brother Gerard Feenan.
He resided in Ridgefield from 1971 through 1985 and then moved to the New Jersey shore before moving back to Ridgefield in 2009.
He is survived by his six children; MaryLouise Neville, James Francis Feenan & his wife Maria Feenan, Thomas Michael Feenan, Karen Ann Feenan, Brian Eugene Feenan & his wife Christine Feenan, Tara Feenan and his former wife Joan Marlin. He is also survived by eight Grandchildrenand one Great Grandchild.
Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 5-8 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans: www.dav.org

Ever since the kids were in elementary school, when he and his wife Mary introduced them to track and field, they showed an unusual aptitude for the sport.
So as Taylor and Sydney McLaughlin look to pull off a rare brother-sister triumph at Wednesday’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions, their dad sees it as “business as usual” for the Dunellen family.
“We knew Sydney and Taylor would do well,” he said. “We didn’t think they’d do well so quickly, but we knew they were exceptional.”
The bloodlines are there. Willie ran at East Orange High School and later Manhattan College, getting his quarter-mile time down to 45.3 open and 44.2 on the 4x400 and advancing to the semifinals of the 1984 Olympic trials. Mary was a 2:12 half-miler from the Buffalo, N.Y. area.

John Edward McElligott died peacefully at home on Friday. He was born to Patrick and Jane McElligott in Staten Island, NY, on February 8, 1922. He graduated from Manhattan College, New York City, in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Going directly from there into the Army, he served as a radar training officer in New Guinea and the Philippines until the end of World War II.
On returning to civilian life, he went to work for General Electric, first in Lynn, MA, then in Schenectady, NY. There he met Anita Gertrude Sullivan, who worked for the advertising department. They married in August of 1950. Anita gave birth to the first of their five children, Brian, in June of the following year.
He accepted a job with Leach Corporation in California, moving the family, which now included daughter Maureen, to Pasadena. There, two more children, sons James and John, were born. The family moved to Lakewood briefly before settling in Fullerton, where their fifth child, Paul, was born. John would live in Fullerton for the rest of his life.
John worked for Leach Corporation for the remainder of his career, rising to President of the company before retiring in 1983. He was instrumental in moving the company U.S. headquarters from South Central Los Angeles to a larger, more modern facility in Buena Park.
He was active in local politics as President of the North Fullerton Homeowners Association, and served on the Advisory Board for Servite High School, attended by three of his sons, and on the Foundation Board for St. Jude Medical Center. He was an active member of Serra Club of Orange County, a society to encourage Catholic men toward the priesthood. He was also active in his church, St. Juliana Falconieri parishes in Fullerton, heading up the Vocations Committee.
Predeceased by his oldest son, Brian, in 1994, and his siblings, Martin, Marie, and his twin sister, Joan, John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anita; daughter, Maureen; three sons, James (Lori), John and Paul; as well as four grandsons, Kevin, Matthew, Cody and Dylan.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in John's name to the Saint Jude Memorial Foundation at P.O. Box 4138, Fullerton, CA, 92834.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Juliana Falconieri at 1316 N. Acacia Ave in Fullerton on Tuesday, June 10 at 10:00am, followed by a reception in the Parish Center. McAulay & Wallace Mortuary

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- John P. Hollywood, 95, of Westerleigh, a retired auto supplies purveyor, talented athlete, sports enthusiast and loving family man, died Sunday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.
The lifelong Staten Islander was born in West Brighton and lived in that community until 1990, when he settled in Westerleigh.
He graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School and attended Manhattan College's former junior college on St. Peter's campus.
Mr. Hollywood worked as a purveyor for Purolator Oil for 10 years. Prior to that, he worked for Greer Hydraulics in Queens.
He was the part-time sports director for 55 years at the Children's Aid Society's Goodhue Center, New Brighton.
A talented athlete, Mr. Hollywood enjoyed playing baseball and was a star pitcher who played semi-pro ball. He also loved music and sang professionally at venues on the Island, including the former Flagship Hotel in Dongan Hills.
An avid New York Giants football fan, he held season tickets and enjoyed tailgating at local games.
Mr. Hollywood was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners.
His wife of 50 years, the former Grayce Bauer, died in 1993.
Surviving are his son, John; his daughter, Kathy Hollywood; his brother, Francis; five grandchildren, and three great0grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.

Ithaca: Vincent dePaul Lukas, age 90, of Ithaca, NY, passed away June 3, 2014.
Vincent was born in Yonkers, NY to Joseph and Anna (Stramikas) Lukas, the youngest of four children. He served during WWII in the US Army Air Corps as a B-17 lead crew navigator, flying 30 missions in the European Theatre with the 388th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, England. First Lt. Lukas was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal and the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Following the war, he graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree. He was a member of Chi Epsilon, an Honorary Engineering Fraternity. He earned his Professional Engineer's license from the NYS Department of Education and later became licensed as an Asbestos Planner and Inspector. His career included facilities management at General Electric Company in Schenectady and Clyde, NY; Superintendent of Public Works, Newark, NY; Director of Engineering for the NYS Pure Waters Authority, in addition to having his own consulting business.
Vincent was a life member of the K of C Council 277 and Elks Lodge 636, Ithaca, NY.
Vincent is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Barbara Bennett Lukas; his daughter, Paula Lukas of Ithaca, NY; his sons, Joseph (Janice) of Davenport, FL, Michael (Lois) of Lithia, FL; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Besides his parents, Vincent was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Lukas Hagar; and sisters, Jean McGregor, Florence Lang, and Constance Carpenter.
A celebration of Vincent's life will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Tuesday, June 10th. Friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the 11:30 funeral mass officiated by the Rev. Joseph Marcoux. Burial will be private in Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 302 St. Catherine Circle, Ithaca, NY or the charity of one's choice . Maureen Kitson '06, a teacher of theology in the Middle School and sixth grader advisor, will be presenting at the American Psychological Association's national conference this summer.
Ms. Kitson has been invited to present on the topic, "Perfectionism, Anxiety and Depression in Affluent Teenage Girls."
She will speak at the conference to the Women’s Psychology division and the division for Social and Personality Disorders. The conference will be held August 7-9 in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Kitson graduated from Sacred Heart, Greenwich in the Class of 2006. She has both a master’s degree and a doctorate in counseling from Manhattan College. Her presentation will be based on her research and thesis for her PhD.

NEWARK — Last September, not long after being laid off from his job with United Technologies, Richard Grisafi logged onto an account to check on his company stock. To his shock, the account was empty, he said.

In Grisafi’s instance, the complaint alleges that in 2007, he joined the Employee Scholars program, promising to earn a degree and also stay with the company for at least a year after earning his degree. In return, Grisafi said yesterday, he would get some $10,000 worth of stock that would vest once the year was up.
But then, he claims, as the company paid his tuition to Manhattan College, where he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, the company suddenly changed the one-year requirement to three years.
It didn’t concern him much at the time, he said, since he believed he’d stay with the company, where he worked on designing flammable items to help train firefighters, for a long time.
He completed his master’s in 2010. About 2½ years of his waiting period went by before he was laid off last summer.

Fund established for Newburgh basketball programs

The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan has established a fund to support the varsity, junior varsity and modified basketball programs at the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.
“We’re trying to use it for kids for camps, showcases, campus visits, scholarships and stuff like that,” varsity basketball coach Matt Iorlano said.
Contributions to the fund, which is separate from the school district, can be made to 30 Scott’s Corners Drive, Suite 202, Montgomery, N.Y., 12549. Money can also be donated online at www.cfoc-ny.org.
A benefit golf outing is scheduled for July 14 at the Powelton Club in Newburgh. Lunch and registration begin at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start a 12:30 p.m.
That day George Bucci, a former Newburgh basketball player who played at Manhattan College and then briefly with the New York Nets of the old American Basketball Association, will be honored.

This has never prevented me from complaining about my fate, not for a minute or a fraction of a minute. But thinking about the death of my wife’s friend’s friend will change all that. From now on there will be no self-inflicted misery or impatience in my life—until, that is, the next time the food in a restaurant takes too long to arrive or a train is delayed by ten minutes.
