As I cheerleader, I have always been active, but now that I was no longer part of a team and back home and not working out, it challenged me to find a way incorporate fitness back into my life.
I signed up at the local YMCA and began going to the gym a few days a week. It was productive, but the routine was predictable and I was not used to working out by myself. For years, I worked out with teammates and small groups and found this worked best for me. Around the time, I found myself in this rut, I ran into one of my friends from high school who was on the same cheerleading team as me. Although we lost touch in college, our interest in fitness was an easy way to pick back up our friendship. She shared her same struggle of not being motivated at the gym and we decided to look for group classes that could keep us motivated.

William Batt (or Chilly Willy as we Chem majors called him - tho not to his face) should pass away on the very day I was telling the story of how he induced me to donate blood when, as a 17 year-old freshman, I needed written parental permission to do so. I was telling the story while signing up to donate once again a scant 54 years later. The chemistry lessons never took (I graduated as a Psych major) the life lessons apparently have. RIP Chilly Willy.

Massaro, Dr. Anthony
Dr. Anthony Massaro, 79, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 am, at the Brick Church Cemetery in Spring Valley, NY.
Anthony was born May 5, 1934 in New York City, NY to Joseph and Philapina Massaro. He graduated from Manhattan College and the State University of New York, Down-State Medical Center. He completed residencies at Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx Municipal Hospital and Memorial Hospital. He married the former Marilyn Jones of Garden City New York and raised his family in Suffern New York, Mississauga Ontario and Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anthony practiced medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital and served multiple terms as the President of the Board of Health for Rockland County, New York. He was a tireless advocate for public health issues throughout his life.
Anthony is survived by his two sons, Joseph Massaro of Flagler Beach, FL and Christopher Massaro (Michele) of St. Michaels, MD, three grandsons, Anthony, Christopher and William; and daughter Felicia Massaro of Oklahoma City, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and his wife Marilyn Massaro (Jones).

I am a 1984 CMSV alumn but took Marketing classes at Manhattan (Go Jaspers!) as well, not to mention enjoyed numerous nights at Pinewood, Terminal and Greenleaf (back in the day!) as well. The Manhattan College sweatshirt, I believe, belonged to my roomate's boyfriend at the time...I also bartended at Greenleaf for short stint which i understand no longer exists. My 30th year reunion approaching next month!

Given that CSMV almost merged, it’s hard not to call “the Mounties” at least “honorary Jaspers”.
Laff. Sometimes they were more “honorable” than others.
It was really too bad that the merger didn’t happen. I know, on the technology committee, we spent a lot of time and energy into making it seamless.

Dr. Daniel Howard may be new to Louisiana, but he is certainly not new to higher education. Having spent his career on college and university campuses, Howard was selected in January of this year as the newest chancellor at LSU of Alexandria following a nationwide search and began his official duties on March 1st.
Howard comes to LSUA from Arkansas State University, where he served as tenured full professor of Educational Leadership and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, in addition to spending two years as Interim Chancellor. Prior to that position, Howard served for 14 years at the University of North Alabama as a tenured full professor and in an array of administrative positions including: Dean of Research and Executive Assistant to the President, Interim Dean of Enrollment Management, Vice President for University Advancement, Vice President for International Relations, Vice President for Administration, and Provost.
Dr. Howard says he was drawn to the chancellor position at LSUA because of the challenges offered and the fact that he could use the expertise and skills learned throughout his career to help raise the university to a higher level. “This position provides a way for me to give back to many individuals who contributed to my education and calls on all the different facets of my life to be able to help advance LSUA and benefit the students it serves,” said Howard. At LSUA, Howard will not only serve as chancellor, but also as a full tenured professor of Allied Health.
Dr. Howard grew up in a caring and stable family environment in which his mother took him on weekly trips to the library. These trips, along with his prized library card, helped to open up a whole new world to him. As a result, he credits his parents with his continued love of reading. He is a first generation college attendee and graduate who was raised in an economically poor family that was rich in loving support, a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, and a deep belief in the transformative value of education. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Manhattan College and enlisted in the United States Army for two years, where he honed his leadership skills as well as a can do/will do attitude.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to the classroom, supported by the G.I. Bill, which he refers to as “one of the best programs ever created in the United States”. Howard earned a Master of Science in Health and Safety “with honors”, Master of Public Health “with honors”, Doctor of Health and Safety (minor in Public Health), and Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education (minor in Law), at the main campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
After finishing his degrees, Howard’s decision to go into academia can be traced back to his roots. “The love of learning that my parents instilled in me and the opportunity to experience the intellectual stimulation that you have in an academic environment,” helped lead him on his path. He is an ardent supporter of the academy and a dedicated servant leader.
Chancellor Howard comes to LSUA with several objectives; the first and foremost is to increase enrollment by not only recruiting students, but also by retaining students through graduation. Since arriving on campus, Howard has had no shortage of ideas on how to fulfill this mission. One of his first goals is to import the private model of enrollment management. He also advocated successfully to restore the Academic Honors Program, create a Student Health Service, reconnect the university with its alumni, improve the food service provided on campus and establish a freshman convocation in order to introduce students to the academic community, thereby allowing them thrive on campus.
Howard is also working toward expanding the mission of Continuing Studies to include professional courses and programs. These will provide continuing education units as well as courses and certificate programs for employees of local and regional business in order to support economic development throughout Central Louisiana. Additionally, he is exploring options for high demand/low cost academic programs which can be added to the LSUA curriculum. These include programs in hospitality management with a minor in culinary arts, social work, computer science, and aviation management, all of which are under consideration, as are many more.
Dr. Howard also plans on creating an annual fund campaign beginning on January 1, 2015, to help raise additional philanthropic and corporate support needed to achieve a level of excellence not otherwise possible with funds provided by legislative appropriations and tuition and fees paid by students. Dr. Howard is restoring the time-honored tradition of the chancellor living on campus. He states that “by living on campus, I can connect better with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. It also shows that I subscribe fully to the importance and uniqueness of the educational environment and culture of the University.” Clearly, he believes in leading by example not exception.
Some of his initiatives lie with alumni and the expansion of club sports on campus. According to Howard, “Alumni are the greatest living examples of institutional success and the best possible advocates for LSUA. They can help their alma mater by encouraging others to attend LSUA, facilitating the creation of internships, assisting graduates in finding jobs, and contributing a portion of their philanthropy to LSUA, to help with scholarship support and to meet other pressing and important needs.” With this in mind, Howard is working toward reconnecting the university with the LSUA alumni. One way of accomplishing this is by creating a database to connect with graduates by sending newsletters and other communications that will inform them of special events, initiatives, and other exciting opportunities to engage with their alma mater and with other alumni and friends, such as social networking, class reunions, homecoming weekends, and other events.
While the university is already increasing its stable of NAIA sports next fall by adding men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s tennis, Howard is looking toward the expansion of club sports on campus. Club sports are those athletic activities, operated under the auspices of the university, in which teams compete on campus and travel to compete against other universities. However, they are not regulated by the NCAA or NAIA. Club sports serve as a link between heavily regulated intercollegiate sports for those student-athletes who are gifted and minimally regulated intramural sports for shoes students who are interested in recreational activities.
Howard indicated that LSUA will be adding a rugby team beginning in January 2015, and will be looking at other potential club sports such as English equitation, rodeo, golf, and swimming. Te idea behind these sports is that they will draw students to the university who may not have previously considered LSUA, provide worthy co-curricular activities, and may lead to some becoming intercollegiate sports. Eventually, he hopes to add a pep band in order to cheer on these athletes and have it develop into a full-fledged marching band. The band will go alongside the pomline that will begin this fall semester and the eventual cheerleading squad.
Dr. Howard believes that these initiatives will help lead the university away from the trappings of a two-year college and toward developing all of those attributes that distinguish a traditional four-year university, which it was approved to become 10 years ago.
While Howard has been very busy leading the campus since taking over, he has still had time to explore the Central Louisiana community, which he has enjoyed getting to know. “This is a friendly, engaging, warm, and very loving community in which the vibrant culture is deeply rooted and the food is exceptional,” said Howard. He says that “there is something exciting going on every day, whether on campus or out in the community itself.” Howard is impressed with the desire of students to learn and be prepared for life; the dedication and high quality and faculty; the commitment of the support staff; and the selfless leadership of the administrators.
“There is a wonderful community engagement here which I love and seek to support,” said Howard. As a result, community members are likely to see Chancellor Howard out and about. When you do, be sure to say “Hello,” and welcome him to LSUA and to Central Louisiana.

William R., of Wyckoff, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2014.
Beloved husband of Pamela (nee Critcherson). Beloved father of Richard, Susan Christopher (David), and Douglas (Colleen). Beloved grandfather of Lindsay Mitchell (Michael), William Christopher (Morgen), Douglas Christopher, and Catherine Kennedy. Beloved great-grandfather of Michael Mitchell, Lilly Mitchell and Mia Christopher.
After graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School, Bill entered the US Navy from 1946-1948. After his service, Bill graduated from Manhattan College in 1952. He then started his career in advertising for Ted Bates & Co in New York City. While at Ted Bates & Co, he ran a subsidiary for them, Custom Marketing.
In his retirement, he authored many books, as well as attending all of his grandchildren's sporting events at Ridgewood High School, and spending summers up at Cape Cod.
He was member of the Hobbyists, a former member of the Ridgewood Country Club, and also taught CCD at Mt. Carmel for many years.
A visitation will be held at C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 4-8 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11:15 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , Memorial & Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38148.

Then, alas, I found my school. Manhattan College. I’m not going to say it’s for everybody, but I majored in English because my Dad majored in English. I told myself that I had to get a degree somehow, and I loved reading so if I have to finish somehow I can do it by reading. I wont sit here and write a dedication about how I’ve learned so much and I’ve loved my professors, but I have. English classes have taught me everything, they’ve fueled so much creativity and have made me question so much. There’s only a handful of English professors in my school, the department is small, so I’ve had each one multiple times and generally have class with students from my major and.. there are no words for how much I’ll miss that environment. Of being able to sit in a circle and discuss things that we all feel are important, what spoke to us in the reading, our opinions, how it shapes everything. It taught me that school might not be for you, but if I hadn’t been forced to learn half of these things I’d still be dating boys who aren’t worth me, sitting with half full dreams, pursuing things that don’t matter, dwelling in relationships that are translucent. The things I’ve been forced to question and ponder in college have made me colorful.

How did the underdogs get their bite in knocking off a stunning array of top-seeded teams in the NCAA college basketball championships? And what can aspiring business leaders learn from victories achieved against teams with far greater star power?
Jerry Rollins, CEO of Sage Executive Group in San Diego and a former professional hockey player, was struck by the initials “T.O.E.” imprinted on the jerseys of the little-known Manhattan College Jaspers when they almost defeated a nationally ranked University of Louisville team with several players bound for the NBA.
The initials stood for, “Team Over Everything.” In game after game, Mercer, North Dakota State, Dayton and Harvard “with less talented players beat much better athletes on the floor,” Rollins said.
It’s a lesson that can be applied to the business world.
“The best teams I ever had went up against bigger companies, had less capital, weren’t as highly educated or ‘articled,” but always seemed to win,” Rollins said. ”On a business team, checking egos at the door and playing a role rather than having five stars on the floor leads to better results.”
The smarts that a coach uses to win against seemingly stronger opponents can be used by a chief executive officer as well.
“Get a bunch of high-powered individuals to play well together and coexist in the sandbox,” Rollins said.

AMD Emerges From Intel’s Shadow With Big Bet on Low-Power Chips

Most people know AMD as the company that clones Intel’s computer chips. But AMD’s top execs want to change that.
On Monday, the AMD top brass laid out the company’s plan to build a new generation of microprocessors that have more in common with your smartphone than the chips Intel builds for desktop PCs, laptops, and servers. Rather than stick with Intel’s venerable x86 chip architecture, AMD will use the low-power ARM architecture as the basis for its newest server processor, a chip due out later this year codenamed Seattle. But this chip is just a prelude to a broader shift in strategy at AMD.
AMD also said that it has signed a new licensing agreement — an “architecture license” — that means it won’t merely adopt the existing processor cores designed by ARM, the Intel competitor whose architecture is used in most smartphones and tablets. Instead, AMD will build its very own ARM core and use it as the basis for a still newer processor code-named K-12. “It’s about how do we really innovate in our compute cores,” said Mark Papermaster, AMD’s chief technology officer, speaking at a press event in San Francisco.
The announcement is part of a broader effort to adopt ARM’s low-power architecture for servers, the machines that drive our internet services and online business software. Chip makers AppliedMicro and Marvel are moving down a similar path, and rumors indicate that Amazon may design a ARM processor for use in the servers that underpin its massively popular cloud service. The idea is that ARM chips will not only reduce power inside large web companies and other businesses, but also provide some much needed price competition for Intel, which is by far the world’s primary supplier of server chips.
AMD’s is putting its top server chip developers on the K-12 project. And Papermaster, who’s leading the charge, has quite the pedigree. He’s the guy who helped Apple design its own ARM chips for the iPhone and iPad before coming over to AMD. Even the chip’s code name signals that ARM is serious about AMD, says Kevin Krewell, a chip analyst at Tirias Research. “Calling it the K-12 is important because the K series is always their premium product,” he says.
It’s the kind of bet AMD needs to make in order to gain ground against its longtime rival Intel, which has been beating it soundly in the server market for the better part of the past decade. But it’s also a risky bet. Calxeda, another startup with a similar idea, went out of business late last year, after burning through an estimated $90 million in VC money.

I'm a soon to be graduate from Manhattan College (May 18th) and will promptly be returning home to RI after graduation. I will be awarded a Bachelor's degree in Education and Spanish. I have a lot of experience caring for children of all ages, and have also completed my student teaching experience this past year. I have found that teaching and caring for children is what I am passionate about.
I have a very flexible schedule this summer. So, I am looking for a full time position (M-F with the occasional weekend call if you decide you deserve a date night, which I'm sure you do!). Three business leaders were inducted Wednesday evening into the Tech Valley Hall of Fame during the annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony at the Albany Marriott Hotel in Colonie.
Inductees were Shirley Ann Jackson, the 18th president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy; I. Norman Massry, principal of Massry Realty Partners; and, pothumously, Michael F. Bette, a founder of Barry & Bette Inc. and Barry, Bette and Led Duke (BBL Construction) and chairman of Bette Companies.
The Tech Valley Business Hall of Fame, a joint effort of Junior Achievement of Northeastern New York and the Albany-based Center for Economic Growth, honors local champions of free enterprise for their dedication to, and success in, making the Tech Valley region a better place to live and work. Wednesday's inductees bring to 56 the number of community leaders who are now members of the Hall of Fame. Their portraits are displayed at the Albany International Airport.

Bette came to the Capital Region 1965 as co-manager with Robert Barry of D. Fortunato, a Long Island-based contracting firm that expanded here. The two established their own construction firm in 1973, and 10 years later formed Barry, Bette and Led Duke Inc. Projects included work at the New York World's Fair, Empire State Plaza, SUNY Albany and Siena College, and St. Peter's and Ellis Hospitals, as well as Albany Medical Center.
He was also active in numerous charitable organizations, and served on the boards of the Twin Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Albany College of Pharmacy, and his alma mater, Manhattan College. He died in 2013

Jonathan Noel Ishii, 57, passed away on May 5, 2014.
A resident of Fredericksburg, VA, he is survived by his wife, Susan, and son Justin Mendez, and his sister Naka Ishii, nieces Erika, Adena, and Emma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Ada Ishii of Dobbs Ferry, NY and brother, Chris Ishii of Pasadena, California.
He received a BS in Photographic Processing and Management from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College.
He was a kind, warm, and beautiful soul, beloved by family, friends, and coworkers. Words can't express the depth of our loss and sorrow. Memorial plans will be announced at a later date.

Azzariti, Guy
Guy Azzariti (Guy Hamilton), husband of Mary Luongo, brother of the late John Azzariti, entered into eternal rest on May 7, 2014 at the age of 65. As the founder of Hamilton Music Productions, he performed under the name Guy Hamilton. He was also the former owner of Executive Billiards in White Plains.
Guy was born on January 30, 1949 in the Bronx to the late Frank & Frances Azzariti, attended Mount St. Michael and received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College. He married Mary Luongo in 2000.
Mr. Azzariti was an accomplished entertainer & musician, especially talented on the piano. He shared his love of music leading his band, tuning pianos, teaching children and entertaining his Peanuts Gang of grandnieces and nephews. Guy's warmth and humor attracted many friends who will remember his exuberance for life, love of animals and his intelligent wit.
In addition to his devoted wife, Mary, he leaves behind his stepson John Cacciatore, his Sheepdog Charlie, his sister-in-law Kathleen Azzariti, his nieces Kimberly (Jon) Baumstark and Kara (John) Gally and seven grandnieces & nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be offered Monday 10AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully received by New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue, 49 Stonehedge, Lincoln, MA 01773 or at WWW.NEOESR.org.

Hello All,
Today is a day for great news. Mike McEneney went into hospital, St Francis, Early Tuesday Morning. The MDs have made him Wireless (Pacemaker) which I guess he can now receive emails directly to his person. All went as scheduled, he is home, has been up to the College already and no complaints. Can't drive for two weeks. A little discomfort but doing very well. Praise God. Thank you for your prayers as Mike sends his thanks to each of you. A prayer of thanks is welcome, for sure. Thank you. As John puts it, " I am 90 % and improving..." We welcome him back after his extended trip to Florida. I guess the thing not to do in Florida is to go " Hip Hopping."
