Chief Nuclear Fuel Development Officer
James Malone has more than four decades of high-level experience in the nuclear industry, including extensive experience in all aspects of fuel procurement and management. In late 2009, Mr. Malone retired after a decade with Exelon Generation Company, where as vice president of Nuclear Fuels he provided strategic direction and tactical guidance for Exelon’s nuclear fuel cycle activities. He was responsible for procurement (uranium, conversion, enrichment, and fuel fabrication) for seventeen operating nuclear reactors—PWRs and BWRs—and his expertise guided the management of used fuel. Mr. Malone’s responsibilities also included special nuclear material accounting and safeguards, economics, and fuel cycle costs. Under Mr. Malone’s supervision, the Nuclear Fuels department provided reload bundle and core design, safety analysis, and plant technical support, including fuel reliability, component procurement strategy, and decommissioning strategy.
Before joining Exelon, Mr. Malone served for ten years as vice president and senior consultant at NAC International, where he consulted on fuel reliability and the front and back ends of the nuclear fuel cycle, among other issues. One of his last projects at NAC was the international safeguards system for the Rokkasho Mura reprocessing plant in Japan. Mr. Malone also worked for many years at SWUCO, Inc., first as a nuclear fuel broker, then as manager of technical services, and finally as vice president. Prior to SWUCO, Mr. Malone was manager of economic analysis at Yankee Atomic, where his work led to important decisions on fuel type and design. Mr. Malone began his career in nuclear power in 1968 as an engineer in the utility reactor core analysis section of the Nuclear Engineering Department of United Nuclear Corporation, where his duties included bundle and core design for the Dresden 1 and Yankee Rowe reactors.
Mr. Malone is a member of the American Nuclear Society and past chairman of its Fuel Cycle Waste Management Division. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering (nuclear) from Manhattan College and an MBA from Iona College, where he was awarded the Graduate School of Business Award for Academic Excellence.

There are several questions that you’ll ask yourself when attending a Manhattan Jaspers basketball game. The first question everyone asks is “What’s a Jasper?”. Well, the team nickname is derived from Brother Jasper, who was credited with bringing baseball to Manhattan College’s campus in the late 19th century. He served as the first baseball coach of the university, and according to campus lore, was the creator of the seventh inning stretch. The story goes something like this; Brother Jasper also served as the head of discipline for the University and would police the student fans in the stands at home games. He noticed during one game that the students were getting restless during the seventh inning of a close game . He called timeout and ordered the students to stand up and stretch in order to alleviate the tension. Since Manhattan played the New York Giants regularly at the Polo Grounds in New York City, the tradition stuck in the major leagues and continues to this day.
The second question you might ask is “Why is Manhattan College located in the Bronx?”. The answer is the school started up in Manhattan in 1853, but outgrew its facilities there, and moved to the Riverdale section of the Bronx in 1922. The campus area feels more like a suburb instead of being in New York City.
The Jaspers have a history of good basketball teams. Manhattan has made the NCAA Tournament six times, advancing to the second round twice; once in 1995 after beating Oklahoma and again in 2004 after beating Florida. The team currently plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and has local rivalries with Iona and Marist. Becoming the Jaspers head coach has been a good springboard to bigger jobs for several coaches. The school can count Bobby Gonzalez, Fran Fraschilla and Steve Lappas as coaches who advanced to a Big East head coaching position straight from Manhattan. The Jaspers are currently coached by Steve Masiello, who was Rick Pitino’s head assistant coach at Louisville.
Draddy Gymnasium, the Jaspers home court, is named after Vincent dePaul Draddy, a college football hall of famer. He was a Manhattan graduate, and a trophy is given out yearly by the National Football Foundation in his honor to the college football player who has the best combination of academics, community service and on-field performance.
Let’s stretch out here, and take a closer look at Draddy Gymnasium, the home of the Jaspers.

Food & Beverage 3
None of the concession offerings jump off the page, but the fare has some variety and the prices are low (you can get a bottle of Coke and a soft pretzel for $5, for example). In an effort to offer more healthy selections at a sporting event, you can buy an apple or a banana at the snack bar for $1. They're labeled as "hand fruits". If you feel like a sandwich, the school offers a variety of "grab and go" sandwiches for $5.
Atmosphere 4
Draddy Gymnasium has a very intimate atmosphere, but is in a very large building. The gym seats 2,345 for basketball, but Draddy Gym itself has a full track, batting cages and a basketball arena all under the same roof. One of the coolest things about seeing a game there is when you're walking in, the Jaspers cheerleaders are lined up behind the ticket-taker, and actually cheer you like a player when you're walking in. The gym has bleacher seating behind both baskets, with the students and the pep band taking up one of those sections. Between the hoops, you have chair-backed seating on one side, with bleacher seating on the other. There is a center-hung scoreboard, and a crystal-clear replay screen on each side of the gym. When the Jaspers are playing in a rivalry game against a local opponent, the students come out in force and make it an exciting atmosphere. The Jaspers have a dance team that performs during timeouts and halftime.
Neighborhood 4
The campus of Manhattan College is very colonial-looking and quite handsome. The neighborhood surrounding the campus has nice apartment buildings and single-family homes. The area around the subway station that services the campus does not share these same characteristics, however. There are a few fast food places around campus (Dunkin' Donuts, Burger King) and a good diner on Riverdale Avenue (The Riverdale Diner) that is open 24 hours. If you're looking for a drink after the game, check out The Punch Bowl on 238th Street, a good Irish pub that won't kill your wallet if you're having more than one. If you like the microbrews, check out The Bronx Ale House, also on 238th Street. They have hundreds of beers and really good wings.
Fans 4
The fans that come to Jaspers games are passionate about the home team. The crowd is a diverse mix of students, alumni, college basketball fans and, since most of the players are local, a good representation of family and friends. A Jaspers game is very much a PG atmosphere, and I wouldn't hesitate to take a kid to a game. In fact, with all the area to run around inside of the gym, most kids are racing each other on the track or diving into the foam pit that the gymnastics team uses behind the bleachers. The students did storm the court after their win against local rival Iona, but it was a double-overtime game and it was nationally televised, so it wasn't beyond reason for them to do so.
Access 3
If you're walking to Draddy Gymnasium from the subway stop on 242nd Street, bring an oxygen tank or a sherpa. You will have a long climb up several sets of stairs just to get to the front door of the gym. Even if you are in really good shape, you will likely be winded from that walk. The school could do a better job of marking where the gym is located when you enter campus. You sort of have to follow the crowd to know where you're going. There is on-site parking, and I didn't see them charging for it, but the lot is small and there did not appear to be a lot of nearby off-street parking.
Return on Investment 5
It is typical to overpay for everything in New York City, but Jaspers tickets are quite a deal. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12. There is usually a giveaway of some sort, so you might end up with a frisbee or a free t-shirt included. The Jaspers offer good Division 1 basketball, and a family of four gets in for $30. That's cheaper than the movies, and a great way to spend a Friday night in New York City. The concessions won't break the bank, either. $50 gets everyone a ticket, a soft pretzel and soda each.

Four stars are given for the unique setup of the arena, the cheerleaders cheering you when you walk in, the very fair prices and the friendliness of everyone who works at Draddy Gym.
Final Thoughts
New York City may have better-known venues to watch basketball games, but a trip to Riverdale to watch the Jaspers is worth your time. It may be out of the way of the bright lights and big city, but it's a beautiful campus and a special place to see really good basketball.

O'BRIEN, Robert Bob
Died on April 8, 2014 as a result of a fall-related head injury. He was 82 years old. He leaves his wife Caroline, his sister Margaret O'Brien Lavallee, and a large family of 7 children and step-children, 17 grandchildren, a niece, 3 nephews, and 7 great-nieces/nephews.
Bob grew up in Providence, RI, attended Manhattan College and later Harvard Business School, and also served as an artillery officer in the US Army.
Bob had wide-ranging pursuits and accomplishments throughout his career. He was a successful entrepreneur in the 1960s with pioneering ventures including the first company to market corporate fitness programs and an early cable-TV venture that linked surgeons to rural low income hospitals in Puerto Rico. He advised both Massachusetts and Puerto Rico governments on the development of commercial fisheries and he launched a company that consulted with the Federal government on bio-dynamic and ocean-related research. He worked for many years as a management consultant for a broad range of corporate and pro-bono clients, ranging from several Fortune 500 companies to St. Josephs Abbey in Massachusetts.
He was a longtime Board Director for the Carroll Center for the Blind and also for the National Braille Press. He tutored and mentored many students at the School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, Florida.
Bob loved his hobbies as well. He was an avid reader, a beautiful writer, an accomplished amateur historian and a lover of classical and jazz music. He spent thousands of hours restoring, tinkering with and showing off his collection of old cars. He loved sailing, from his boyhood summers on Narragansett Bay to later summers on Cape Cod and Boston Harbor. In recent years he took up soaring and greatly enjoyed his time both in the air and on the ground with his fellow glider pilots.
He was a regular visitor to St. Josephs Abbey, and his time spent there with his brothers and in retreat helped him to reinforce his faith and to maintain a sense of peace with changes in his life.
More than any of these interests and accomplishments, though, Bob loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. While juggling the pressures of his career, he took time each night to read to his children while they were growing up and also shared many special projects and activities. As the grandchildren arrived and grew, he similarly built and cherished a special connection with each of them. He wrote and called regularly, sent thoughtful gifts, found special projects to share, and sought to spend time with each person individually during family get-togethers.
He and Caroline traveled regularly across the country and to Europe to visit their children and grandchildren. Bob and Carolines homes in Maine and Florida hosted many boisterous family get-togethers over the past decades, gatherings that reinforced family bonds and created many happy memories. His long devotion to his family created his most memorable and lasting legacy a close-knit, loving and thriving extended family that misses him greatly.
A memorial service will be held at St. Josephs Abbey in May. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either St. Josephs Abbey (167 N Spencer Rd, Spencer, MA 01562) or to National Braille Press (88 St. Stephen Street, Boston, MA 02115)

Dr. Kris Bungay is a board-certified internist who has been in private practice for general internal medicine since 2003. Although he sees a wide-range of medical conditions, he specializes on HIV medicine and LGBT health.
He was born and raised in Manila, Philippines but moved to the US at a young age. After finishing high school in Nevada, he moved to NYC to attend Manhattan College for his undergraduate studies. He obtained his medical degree at SUNY-Brooklyn in 1999.

Obituary
Leonard J. Doran, 85, formally of Forest Hills, NY, passed away peacefully at home in Framingham this past Saturday, April 12, 2014.
Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Matthew J. & Elizabeth A. (O'Brien) Doran of Framingham and husband of the late Bridie (Gilmartin) Doran of Forest Hills, NY. Leonard was educated at St. Mary's High School in Waltham Massachusetts, served in the U.S. Army, attended Manhattan College, New York, NY, and went on to earn a master's degree of law from New York University.
He worked for many years as a corporate attorney for American International Group, Inc. (AIG) insurance company in Manhattan, NY until his retirement.
He was an avid stamp & coin collector and loved to travel with Ireland being his favorite destination. Leonard was also a master at crossword puzzles and could complete a New York Time's crossword in record time. He enjoyed a spirited card game and had a special love for children.
He is survived by his son Matthew M. Doran of Queens, NY, siblings Brendan S. Doran of Framingham and F. Brien Doran of Dublin, CA, nieces & nephews in the U.S., and many cousins in Ireland. He is predeceased by his sister Rosemary A. (Doran) Medeiros and Kevin J. Doran both formally of Framingham, MA.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 from 4:00p.m. to 7:00pm at Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St., Framingham. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Wednesday April 16, at 9 AM from the Norton Funeral Home followed by his funeral Mass at 10 AM at St. Stephen's Church, 221 Concord St., Framingham. This email will serve as an update to you my dear friends,
My treatment has been overseen by an excellent physician and very good man named Joseph Ruggiero. Joe is an Italian American from Brooklyn who no doubt spent a great deal of his time in the library at Harvard while I was during my college days pursuing other activities.
It was touch and go with Dr. Joe for a while since he didn't easily adapt to my Irish sense of humor. However, we've gotten past that now and have become friendly to the point where recently he engaged me in a discussion the day after St. Patrick's Day wherein he was trying to convince me that that St. Joseph's day had comparable festive traditions to those engaged in by my fellow Celts.
It was rather hard to keep a straight face because other than the special pastries made for St. Joseph's day there wasn't much else happening. I thought back to the years of marching up Fifth Avenue behind a bagpipe band with family and friends and then post parade dinners and drinks. So after we discussed where you can get the best pastries for St. Joseph's day I thought better of trying to win any argument with my oncologist so as far as I'm concerned St. Joseph's day is more important than Christmas.
I have finished my fifth round of chemotherapy and am scheduled to undergo CAT scan studies March 31 to see what effect they have had on the cancer and then regardless they have scheduled a sixth round of for April 1st
The good thing about cancer is that it gives you time for focused thought and prayer. The bad thing about cancer is that it gives you time that you have to deal with it. Prior to be diagnosed New Year's eve I had had great plans. I was in Florida at our home on the ocean with my wife and children for a family vacation. I was going to slow it down and spend more of my time enjoying what I considered to be the fruits of my labors.
Evidently God had other plans for me and he called me to go on this journey. When you are healthy and things are going your way its easy to lose sight of the fact that there is so much that is outside of our control.
So at this point you know everything I do and I ask that you continue to remember me in your prayers.
Please keep Kevin and his Family in your prayers as we continue to pray that Kevin's treatment's have the desired effect and that he will be on the road to recovery. Thank you. God Bless.

William J. Abeltin, 60, of Lincroft, died suddenly on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, surrounded by his loving family.
Son of the late Alfred and Marie (Tiernan), he was born Jan. 16, 1954 in Brooklyn, NY. He was raised in Lynbrook, NY and graduated from Manhattan College. In 2006, he joined Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as Director of Procurement.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Deborah (Buckley) and loving father of Jacqueline, Katherine, and Meagan; two brothers and two sisters; his cherished aunt, Fran Caser; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the John E Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at St. Leo The Great R.C. Church in Lincroft. The interment will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum in Middletown. Memorial donations may be made in William's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908. Carolyn Y. Woo, Ph.D., president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), will deliver Manhattan College’s keynote address at the College’s 172nd undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 18 at 1 p.m. She will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the ceremony.
“The work of CRS is a shining example of faith in action, and Carolyn Woo’s leadership is a model for our students in the use of great gifts in service of the common good,” said President Brennan O’Donnell. “Manhattan College cherishes it strong relationship with CRS and our students and faculty look forward to welcoming Dr. Woo formally into our educational community.”
Founded by the Catholic bishops of the United States in 1943, CRS was first started to aid survivors of World War II in Europe. Following a distinguished academic career, Woo has spearheaded CRS, the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the U.S., since 2012.
Last year, Woo, representing CRS, was featured by Foreign Policy magazine (May/June 2013) as one of the 500 Most Powerful People on the Planet and one of only 33 in the category of “A Force for Good.” She also writes a monthly column for Catholic News Service, which received first place in the 2013 Catholic Press Association Awards in the category of Best Regular Column – Spiritual Life.
Prior to working at CRS, Woo was the dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business for more than 10 years. Under her supervision, the school was recognized as the nation’s leading business school in ethics education and research, and received top ranking in 2010 and 2011 for its undergraduate business program from Bloomberg Businessweek magazine.

David H., Sr., of Glen Rock, passed away April 13, 2014.
Beloved husband of 58 years to Eileen (nee Reilly). Loving father of Susan and husband Ray Deming of Glen Rock, David H Skinner Jr., of Ramsey, Stephen J. and wife Gigi Skinner of Hawthorne, Paul C and wife Lynn Skinner of Wanaque. Adoring grandfather to Kaitlyn, Matthew, Emily, and Amanda.
A long time Parishioner of St. Catharine R.C. Church in Glen Rock, he was Principal of the Glen Rock Central School from 1978-1993. Previously, he was Principal of the Glen Rock Jr.-Sr. High School from 1968 - 1978.
David earned his undergraduate from Manhattan College in 1952, and earned his Masters from Hofstra in 1954, and did Post Graduate work at St. John's.
David was a combat Medic in the Korean War, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
David was Past Commander of VFW Post 850 Glen Rock, a member of the American Legion Post 145 Glen Rock, and also was a member of the Hobbyists in Ridgewood, and the Activities Club of Glen Rock. He was an avid Mets, St. John's Red Storm, and Notre Dame Football fan.
In 1946, David was a lifeguard at Long Beach NY, where he met the love of his life, Eileen.
The Funeral Mass will be Monday April 21, 2014 at 10 AM. in St. Catharine R.C. Church Glen Rock, with interment to follow in St. Luke's Cemetery, Ho-Ho-Kus. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM, at the Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Ave, Ridgewood.

I was born in 1951 and raised in Hawthorne NJ. I played basketball for my high school and won a full scholarship to the U of Dayton. I proudly became a Dayton Flier in 1970.
In Dec of 1972 I transferred to Manhattan College where I received my BS in Education with a minor in Business. I married my wife in my last year at Manhattan. After graduation we moved back to Hawthorne and we were blessed with 2 children. They are both married now and have children of their own.
While still in college I started investing in rental apartments in Paterson NJ. Eventually I acquired 86 different units over a five year period. With the birth of my son I sold all of these properties.
After graduation I chose to use my business degree and took a job with a printing company and developed a number of National accounts for them. While working there I started a small trucking company. My partner and I grew the business to 25 trucks. Unfortunately we had a falling out and the company was dissolved.
I then started a development company where I learned to work with different Municipal Governments as well as the EPA and countless other government agencies.
In 1988, I started yet another business “Joe’s Lunch Emporium” . This little food service helped me and my family rebuild ourselves and in 1992 I started a second company “Mister Mushroom.”
In 1998 I sold “Joe’s Lunch Emporium” to my employees and in 2003 I sold “Mister Mushroom” to a larger company.
In 2004 I started my latest business,” Joe’s Sharpening Service” which specializes in sharpening for the beauty, barber and grooming industry, I have also created a sister company “Pro Line Ltd” which is a shear whole sale company.
I have been self employed all of my adult life.
On a political note, I am a life long Republican and have supported the local Republican Party since my arrival here in Salisbury.
I am also one of the original organizers of the Morristown Tea Party. When I moved here to Rowan I sought out the Tea Party Patriots and have been active ever since.
There are some on our community who want to crush any Rowan resident who associates with the Tea Party. This is unfortunate. They do not understand the Constitutional principles for which the Tea Party fights. I am willing to debate them at any time.

I was looking up the origin of the concept of "slicing the salami" as a method of bringing about drastic and fundamental changes one little step at a time and I ran across this note in Wikipedia about a television satire that was aired LONG before the current Ukraine situation:
"The term "salami tactics" was used in the British political satire, Yes Prime Minister in Series 1, Episode 1, "The Grand Design". In this episode, the prime minister's chief scientific advisor opines that the Soviets won't suddenly invade western Europe, but will annex areas slice by slice and thus Prime Minister Jim Hacker realizes he will never get to push the nuclear button to stop the Soviets."
It was also popularized by Hitler and possibly Mussolini in terms of annexing territories and removing political freedoms.
The popular "story" used to illustrate the concept concerns a worker at a butcher's shop who would get fired if he threw an entire salami over his shoulder and walked out with it at the end of a workday. However, if during the course of his workdays he just popped an extra slice in his mouth each time he was cutting a salami for a customer he'd get the whole thing scot-free!
And finally, it's used by today's antismoking movement, as stated in no-smoke.org's 2009 guidebook for activists, "Fundamentals of SmokeFree Workplace Laws" ( http://www.no-smoke.org/pdf/CIA_Fundamentals.pdf ) in which activists are told that to reach the final goal of a total societal ban,
"you might need to take incremental steps (starting with smokefree non-hospitality workplaces and restaurants, then bars and gaming facilities). But along the way, never accept a compromise that will prevent you from reaching that ultimate goal. Preemption, ventilation, smoking areas and accommodation compromises, for example, create roadblocks to achieving 100% smokefree laws in the future."

CONDE
Edward N. Dr., of Hackensack, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the age of 80 years.
Dr. Conde's psychotherapy practice served the Bergen County community for over 25 years. He was also a retired member of the United Federation of Teachers.
Beloved husband of Lyudmila Zimina. Devoted father of Virginia Fitzpatrick and her husband David, Edward Conde and his wife Debra, James Conde and his Fiancé Natasha, Eileen Conde, Alice Leuenhagen and her husband John, Rose Conde, Rita DiCesare and her husband Chris, Steven Conde and his wife Kristine, Marysue Conde, and the late Susan Conde (1971). Cherished grandfather of twelve grandchildren. Dearest brother of Richard Conde and his wife Joan.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday April 19th at 12:30 PM at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:30-12:30 PM. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. In lieu of Flowers please make donations in Dr. Conde's memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , PO BOX 1000 Dept 142, Memphis, TN 38101. Tiffany S. 'Tiff' Swanson, age 36, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born March 9, 1978, in Elgin, to Robert J. and Kathleen (Koranda) Swanson. A longtime resident of Crystal Lake, Tiffany was a 1996 graduate of Crystal Lake Central High School. She was a well rounded student and was loved by all. She will forever be remembered for her grace and constant smile throughout her courageous battle.
In High School she played softball, basketball and volleyball. She received a volleyball scholarship for her education at Manhattan College in New York majoring in physical therapy. Tiffany lived in New York and New Jersey until 2006, returning to Illinois for health reasons to be near her family.
One of the last things she enjoyed from her bucket list was skydiving.
Survivors include her son, Jacob of Brookfield, WI; her mother, Kathleen Swanson of Fox Lake; her father Robert Swanson of Twin Lakes; her significant other, Chris Cunningham of McHenry; brothers, Robert (Mary) Swanson, Jr. of Brookfield, WI, Geoff (Mary) Swanson of Tucson, AZ, Bryan (Adrienne) Swanson of Brookfield, Brett (Kathy) Swanson of Oconomowoc, WI; seven nieces and six nephews.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:30 p.m. at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050. OLIVA--L. Jay. The NYU community grieves deeply the loss of its cherished 14th president, L. Jay Oliva. No one served NYU better or more faithfully than he, or did more to shape the NYU we know today.
Starting as a member of the history faculty in 1960, he went on to be the last dean of the Heights campus, helping to guide NYU through some of its most challenging moments. From that point forward, through his tenure as chancellor and then president, he had a key hand in engineering what has been described as the greatest success story in contemporary American higher education.
Understanding the diversity of student success at NYU, he cheered on NYU's top students, our athletes, our performing artists, and our community service volunteers. Educator, mentor, leader, and great colleague and friend -- he loved NYU through-and-through, believed in its promise, and led the way in making NYU a respected national research university and jump-starting its global efforts.
All those who wear violet mourn today, and we send our deepest sympathies to his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen, his son Eddie and wife Christine, and his son Jay, wife Tina, and their children Caelinn and Declan. His absence from our community will be keenly felt, but his memory will live on in the great institution he did so much to build.

NYU’s Fourteenth President L. Jay Oliva Passes Away

On Thursday April 17, NYU’s fourteenth president L. Jay Oliva passed away. His cause of death has yet to be released. The New York State native was 80-years-old at the time of his passing.
A graduate of Manhattan College and Syracuse University, Oliva began his tenure at NYU as a Russian professor in 1960 and served as an administrator from 1972 to 1991, when he assumed the role of NYU’s fourteenth president. After 11 years of service as president, Oliva passed the torch to John Sexton in 2002.
”Under Jay Oliva, we have really achieved much of what we dreamt of 25 years ago,” NYU chairman Martin Lipton told the Times in 2001. ”We have finished the transformation from a regional commuter school to a global university.”
Under Oliva, NYU completed the first $1 billion fundraising campaign in higher education. Furthermore, the idea of NYU as a “global university” can be directly attributed to Oliva, who wanted to give every NYU student the opportunity to study abroad. And as the American university that sends the most students abroad, it’s safe to say that Oliva’s mission has been pursued even after his presidency.
In the years after his retirement from the presidency, Oliva remained a part of the NYU community through his leadership of the Skirball Center.
“The NYU we know today — the NYU that attracts the finest students from all over the world, that can go head-to-head to recruit scholars at the top of their fields, that sends more students to study abroad than any other, that is a member of the University Athletic Association — would not have been possible without Jay Oliva,” said Lipton and Sexton in an email to the NYU community. “He was a key engineer of the transformation of NYU.”

The licensing authority approved a new annual victuallers license for Little Miss Cupcake, Inc. this week. Taylor Stump, fresh out of Manhattan College this spring, will open the shop June 1 to serve her homemade cupcakes, specialty candies and cookies, according to her mother, Tonya Stump of Yarmouth Port, who will help run the new shop along with three other employees.
“She loves baking,” Tonya Stump said, referring to her daughter, after getting the licensing approval. She said the 40-seat shop two doors down from Puritan Cape Cod will also have a creative cupcake bar where customers can pick their frostings and decorations. The shop will have soda and cold coffee, but won’t compete with its neighbor, Rendezvous Café and Creperie, for hot coffee, Stump told the board when member Gene Burman asked.

LEWIS, Charles James - We are sad to announce that Charles ("Chuck") died peacefully at North York General Hospital on April 14, 2014 in his 83rd year, following a courageous fight with cancer.
Charles continued to be active through his illness and chemo treatments and continued to host, as "Patriarch", many family gatherings as he had for more than thirty years.
Charles was born in Glendale, New York, on February 15, 1932. His parents were Charles Joseph and Rose Ignatius (Donahue). He was predeceased by his loving wife Marian (Runte) and his sister Rosemarie (Maher). He leaves his children Mark (Madelyn), Michael (Michelle), Steven (Barbara), Gregory and Jennifer . His grandchildren Sarah, Sean, Erin, Kaitlin and Keira will miss their "Pop-Pop" who was an indelible presence in their lives.
Charles served in the US Navy in the 1950s during the last years of the Korean War. He graduated from Manhattan College with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, obtained an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was a CGA.
He worked for RCA and Corning Glass before moving his family to Thornhill in 1967. Over the past 20 years he was President of his own accounting company.
Visitation will be Easter Sunday, April 20th, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church (39 Green Lane). Thanks to North York General, Drs. Robson, Horvath and staff. The U.S. unemployment rate is down, but rising numbers of Americans have dropped out of the labor force entirely

A big puzzle looms over the U.S. economy: Friday's jobs report tells us that the unemployment rate has fallen to 6.7% from a peak of 10% at the height of the Great Recession. But at the same time, only 63.2% of Americans 16 or older are participating in the labor force, which, while up a bit in March, is down substantially since 2000. As recently as the late 1990s, the U.S. was a nation in which employment, job creation and labor force participation went hand in hand. That is no longer the case.
What's going on? Think of the labor market as a spring bash you've been throwing with great success for many years. You've sent out the invitations again, but this time the response is much less enthusiastic than at the same point in previous years.

The fierce debate now going on in Washington about extending unemployment insurance and raising the minimum wage largely ignores these issues. Such policies may affect the incomes of some Americans, but they won't do much to expand opportunity and bring more people back into the labor force. Sparking a broad-based return to the labor force demands a more ambitious agenda.

Another priority for bringing low-wage workers back into the labor force is reforming disability insurance, which is part of the Social Security system. Since changes in qualifications in the 1980s made it much easier to receive federal disability payments, the percentage of individuals reporting disabilities who are still working has dropped by half. For some, disability insurance has become an incentive to give up on work—but it doesn't have to be this way.

[JR: Two rants here: (1) The correct minimum wage is zero. If you and I agree on a dollar an hour, then what right does the Gooferment have to interfere. Look at all the unpaid “interns” used by liberals and Gooferment. What’s their wage rate? (2) Disability is being scammed. Look at all the TV shows showing the “disabled” doing things that testified that they couldn’t. Unemployment is higher than the Gooferment reports because they are “kooking the books” and we need a better measure like social security taxes collected. Argh!]
