POSITRACTION: From watching the Golf Channel?

2014-Mar-16

http://vimeo.com/84055664

FROM MY “OLD” FRIEND

Check out this swing. She is 6 years old. Her father does not play. She learned from watching the Golf Channel.

# - # - #

Who says TV is a bad influence? Or that it doesn’t have any influence on people — young or old.

(Advertisers are throwing their money away on stuff that doesn’t work! For better or worse.)

This little girl has some swing for any age golfer. I gave up in frustration.

Wonder what the back story is?

Did her parents think that the Golf Channel was wholesome programming?

Or, maybe, a college scholarship was in the back of their mind!

Either way, WOW, what a lesson to us all.

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) disagrees about the A train and Jasper-ness

2014-Mar-16

Dear f. John,

I wonder why you would offer the opinion that an A train rider would likely not be a Jasper?

I was not a daily commuter but would often go home to LI on weekends. When returning to Alma Mater from home or from a foray into Manhattan (the borough), I would frequently take the A train to 168th St. and ride the elevator to the #1 train to complete the journey. I think I read somewhere that the A train’s run from 59th St. to 125th St. is the longest uninterrupted run in the subway system - so I felt like I was getting somewhere faster. Never did really figure out if the fuss/time of the elevator transfer at 168th negated the advantage.

But I do think you would find that Jaspers ride the A train. :-)

Well, going back a bit.... The F train from Brooklyn to West 4th, and then the A train to the 168th switchover was quite the norm. Whole trip took maybe ??75 minutes?? at a good time, maybe two hours or more at 3am on a Sunday night.

Those late nights at 168th were amazing. I was almost always the ONLY person sitting around at that station at those hours. Does it still look the same? Antique lighting fixtures and amazingly huge white tile arched ceiling?

Is the elevator still a dilapidated iron monstrosity?

Barry Biggar Joins McGuireWoods’ New York Office as Partner in Debt Finance Department
March 14, 2014

McGuireWoods LLP is pleased to announce that Barry Biggar is joining the firm as a partner in its New York office within the Debt Finance Department, bringing particularly deep experience to McGuireWoods’ capabilities in its airline finance practice.

His work representing major global air carriers has twice been recognized as the Airfinance Journal’s Deal of the Year. He represented significant creditors in the United Airlines and Northwest Airlines bankruptcy cases. Airfinance Journal also identified him as one of the top aviation lawyers in North America.

“Barry is a strong addition to McGuireWoods’ capabilities not only for our New York office, but particularly for our work in the competitive and growing area of debt finance. His arrival is more good news for McGuireWoods clients,” said Philip Goldstein, managing partner of the firm’s New York office.

Biggar comes to McGuireWoods after six years with the finance practice group of King & Spalding LLP in New York.

Biggar, a 1974 graduate of Manhattan College and a cum laude graduate of the Pace University School of Law, has been practicing law for 25 years, much of it in aircraft and airline financing transactions.

“Barry brings a wealth of experience in equipment finance in general and specifically in the area of aircraft finance. Together with a core group in Charlotte and an experienced partner in our London office, we can now offer our financial clients a deep aircraft finance team,” said Robert W. Cramer, a partner in McGuireWoods’ Charlotte, N.C., office and the chairman of the firm’s debt finance practice.

As sponsors flee, Universities stand by anti-LGBT St. Patrick's Day Parade
By Seth Adam, GLAAD's Senior Manager of Communications |
March 17, 2014

*** begin quote ***

As top-billed sponsors including Guinness and Heineken pull their support of the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade over its ban on LGBT families and organizations, there remains puzzling support from Universities that also claim to respect and protect LGBT people and students.

Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College, and Quinnipiac University were listed as sponsors of the parade on its website on Friday. The NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade website has since removed all sponsor listings from the page.

GLAAD reached out to each of the Universities and Colleges to request comment about their support for the parade and clarification about the schools' own non-discrimination policies.

*** and ***

Fordham University, Iona College, and Manhattan College did not respond to GLAAD's request for comment. However, each of the Universities have non-discrimination or harassment policies that include sexual orientation. (Policies can be found at the following links: Fordham, Iona College, Manhattan College.)

B. Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, and All Other Forms of Harassment

Preamble – Manhattan College has a tradition of value-centered education and among the cherished values that the College is committed to impart is a deep respect for the dignity and integrity of each person. An important responsibility assumed by the College community is to stand firm against actions that threaten that fundamental regard for each person’s individual dignity and integrity.

The members of the College community understand that any form of discrimination violates the principles of human relationships and the College has a longstanding opposition to any discriminatory treatment based on an individual’s race, creed, color, religion, age, ethnic or national origin, sex, marital status, personal orientation, citizenship status or disability.

It has long been recognized by the College that sexual harassment is an invidious form of discrimination, one that demeans the dignity and integrity of the individual and that undermines the College’s mission to foster an open learning and working environment. The College voiced its condemnation of such harassment and discriminatory treatment in a policy statement, presented below, adopted in fall 1987 by the Senate, President and Board of Trustees, and consistently affirmed by the College in the conduct of its affairs. In furtherance of this commitment, the College has implemented a revised set of procedures intended to provide members of the College community with a way to assert their right to be free of prohibited harassment and discrimination, with a system to report incidents of harassment and with a mechanism for effective preventative and corrective action.

This policy and its accompanying procedures, originally implemented to address problems of sexual harassment, are equally appropriate to the broad range of potential incidents of harassment and discrimination arising from an individual’s race, creed, color, religion, age, ethnic or national origin, sex, marital status, personal orientation, citizenship status or disability. An individual in the College community may seek to apply these procedures to any discriminatory treatment.

JHQ: Barnes & Noble and New College Bookstore

2014-Mar-20

http://manhattan.edu/news/manhattan-partners-barnes-noble-open-new-college-bookstore

Manhattan Partners with Barnes & Noble to Open New College Bookstore

The new bookstore will feature cost-saving options and expanded services, and is open to the public.

As Manhattan College prepares to open the Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons later this year, the College has partnered with Barnes & Noble College to operate its new bookstore effective immediately. The store will operate, temporarily, out of the College’s Leo Hall, until construction on the student commons is complete in summer 2014.

“We are excited to partner with Barnes & Noble College in a new venture that will benefit both the College and the community,” said Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College. “The store will provide state-of-the-art course support and service to students and faculty, and will strengthen ties with the neighborhood by being accessible to Riverdale book lovers as well.”

The bookstore will be located on the second floor of the student commons, named for alumnus and former New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly ’63. The building will formally open in fall 2014.

In addition to traditional textbooks, an expanded selection of Jasper apparel, laptops and other technology-related products will be available. The bookstore will also carry trade books, current and popular reads, supplies and other educational materials.

With Barnes & Noble College’s Campus Connect technologies, students and faculty will have access to the largest selection of course materials in several cost-saving formats — rental, used, digital and new. These innovative solutions include course fee programs, multi-platform LMS integration strategies, real-time student financial aid modules, and Barnes & Noble’s simple Registration Integration online ordering system. Faculty will also gain access to a groundbreaking online community, FacultyEnlight (www.facultyenlight.com), a streamlined textbook adoption platform that combines advanced search capabilities with detailed information on course material formats, pricing and reviews by other faculty.

Through Barnes & Noble College’s textbook rental program, students can save an average of 50 percent off the price of a new textbook.

Manhattan College is one of 69 higher education institutions that Barnes & Noble College partners with in the state of New York, including Columbia University, Fordham University and Baruch College. Nationwide, Barnes & Noble College operates more than 700 campus stores.

“We’re extremely proud to have formed our new partnership with Manhattan College,” said Max J. Roberts, CEO, Barnes & Noble College. “We’re looking forward to offering its students, faculty and alumni a dynamic bookstore, focused on delivering a retail and digital learning experience that complements one of New York City’s finest schools.”

MFOUND: "Bravo Zulu" to the mens basketball team

*** begin quote ***

No. 4 seed Louisville survived a poor shooting night, hanging on to defeat No. 13 seed Manhattan College, 70-64, in second-round NCAA Tournament action that started late Thursday and didn't end until early Friday morning.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Watched the first half and our Jaspers gave the Cards fits. You could see that it was just a matter of time. Too much size and talent. On too late for me to stay up; yes, I’m old. But a “well done” is in order. Run up the Bravo Zulu to the fleet. Not bad for “mid major”.]

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) finds news on Scanlan, Br. Thomas J. [MCxprez]

2014-Mar-22

Dear John,

The March 6th edition of Catholic New York has the following report:

BROTHER SCANLON GETS HONORARY DEGREE

Brother Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C.. president emeritus of Manhattan College, was recognized with an honorary doctorate from St. Mary's University of Minnesota, a LaSallian University. The degree was conferred Feb 13 at the university's campus in Minneapolis.

Brother Scanlon helped Manhattan College increase its enrollment with 120 percent rise in applications and a 100 point increase in SAT scores, while achieving accreditations from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.

During Brother Scanlan's 22-year tenure, which ended with his retirement in 2009, the college transformed from commuter-based to largely residential. The Riverdale college also saw several campus enhancements and expansions, including the opening of two new residence halls and a new library,

Four other Christan Brothers who have served as presidents at institutions throughout the nation were also honored.

The honorees include: Brother Louis DeThomasis, F.S.C., president emeritus of St. Mary's University of Minnesota who formerly served on Manhattan College's board for 15 years; Brother Michael McGinniss, F.S.C., president of La Salle University, past president of Christian Brothers University and former board member at Manhattan College; Brother Mel Anderson F.S.C., past president of St. Mary's College of California; and Brother James Gaffney, F.S.C., president of Lewis University.

Best,

Mike

ENDNOTE: "Marriage" versus “partnership law”

2014-Mar-22

http://www.wnd.com/2014/03/catholic-church-dissecting-gay-unions/?cat_orig=faith

TESTING THE FAITH
CATHOLIC CHURCH DISSECTING 'GAY' UNIONS
Cardinal: Pope wants to 'evaluate' public policy

(RELIGION NEWS SERVICE) Cardinal Timothy Dolan said Sunday that Pope Francis is asking the Catholic church to look at the possibility of recognizing civil unions for gay couples, although the archbishop of New York said he would be “uncomfortable” if the church embraced that position.

# - # - #

[JR: IMHO I would push the Gooferment off the word “marriage”. The origins of the Gooferment involvement in marriage via “marriage licenses” is racist. And fought front he get go. Now they should insist that the Gooferment endorse “partnership law”. Like the boom in sub-chapter S and LLC. We need the Gooferment to just allow folks to create “partnership”. And leave “marriage” to the Churches. We do have separation of Church and State?]
