JEMAIL: Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1957) reports in from Addis Hope

2014-Mar-09

Dear Friends of Addis Hope,

Greetings from Addis Ababa!!! My apologies for this form letter. I am very fortunate in having so many relatives and friends that for now this is my only option. I promise to be more personal in the future.
It’s only now after dealing with telecommunications to pay for internet and phone service and going for a week without electricity and water that I’m able to be up and running, at least until the next blackout.

It’s been approximately two weeks since my arrival back to Ethiopia after sixteen hours travel. For a few dollars more my United flight to Frankfurt provided extra leg room but they forgot to pad the seats. The Lufthansa flight to Addis had wonderfully padded seats but anyone over five feet tall was in trouble. I used my pillow as a pad to brace my knees. No one dared put their seats in a reclining position. In the stopover in Jedda, Saudi Arabia we were told to hide any liquor but, unlike previously, no liquor police came through the cabin. Upon arrival, I was happy to be met by my good friend, Brother Kassu Fantaye. Kassu had lived with our Irish brothers in South Africa, took a great liking to them and now insists on being called McFantaye. I can't yet bring myself to accept his wanting to be black Irish. He is the headmaster of De La Salle primary/ secondary school of 1,000 students. Others in my community are Betre Fessehay, headmaster of Nazareth Girls School, 1500 students, Belayneh Medhanit, headmaster of St. Joseph’s Boys School, 1300 students, Tsegaye Worku, Sector Coordinator, Peter de Groot, Dutch American religion teacher in two schools, Daniel Carlin, Irish Community Director and English teacher in St. Joseph. My room reminds me of the joke that the flies have to file a flight plan- a big change from CBA, Lincroft NJ.

As always moving from the first world to the third/fourth is very disconcerting no matter how often it’s done - and for me that's quite often over the past forty years. At 11 PM on a damp cold night on the way to our residence a young barefoot woman carrying a baby begged for money which she received. One of her other children could well have been one of our students in Addis Hope since begging is a way of life for a good number of our parents.

Needless to say, I’m happy to be back with my confreres and Addis Hope colleague, Ruth Girmay. Ruth continues to be my chauffeur to save on fuel. She is a very good driver and loves outmaneuvering other drivers - the rule here is whoever gets to the spot first owns it. I’ll have more to say about our work with Addis Hope and the disabled in another note.

God bless,
Greg

JHQ: Alma Mater highlights some West Coast students

2014-Mar-10

Eastward Bound: West Coast Natives Make their Mark on Manhattan

Jaspers from the west coast discover that New York City is the ideal backdrop to an exceptional education.

New York City: There’s no place like it. That’s why many westerners brave the cultural divide between U.S. coasts, moving more than 3,000 miles away from the comforts of hometown faces and places for the promise of the Big Apple.

Jaspers define and distinguish that promise for themselves: from discovering independence and big city opportunities to continuing a family tradition, they find that a close campus community with easy access to New York City is the ideal backdrop to the transformation that begins in the classroom.

Best of Both Worlds

Just a short subway ride from one of the most diverse cities in the world, Manhattan was the ideal choice for the varied interests and goals of lifelong friends and L.A. natives Clarisse Aoanan ’15 and Nicole Peltier ’15 who wanted to experience NYC in tandem.

Aoanan, a self-starting business major who’s also pre-med, can usually be found in the middle of O’Malley Library stacks as she juggles six to seven courses per semester. Peltier, a communication major, divides her time and attention between the classroom and developing her professional experience downtown.

As a rule, weekends are a time for the duo to slow down and explore everything the city has to offer, from the newest wine bar in SoHo to the Museum of Moving Art in Astoria. Together, they’ve mastered the subway system and the art of layering during frigid winter months.

“There’s nothing like being in NYC while you’re young,” Aoanan says. “We’ve had so many crazy adventures. We’ve gotten lost, we’ve discovered new places, and I love that.”

During summers, both Aoanan and Peltier prioritize their own professional development in very different ways. Aoanan, on the fast track to medical school, returns to California and takes general science courses at the nearby community college. Peltier stays at Manhattan to develop her professional resume.

In addition to finding her footing as a freelance photographer, Peltier interned with Gluttony, an ad agency in Chelsea during summer 2013. Since May, she’s served as a guest services and production assistant at EDC New York at MetLife Stadium, a position she secured by simply volunteering at several events.

“Living here is exciting because you’re pushed out of your comfort zone,” Peltier says. “I’ve met a lot of people and made a ton of connections by doing that, and none of that would have happened if I didn’t live in New York City.”

Continuing a Tradition

Tyler Mulvaney ’16 is a fourth generation Jasper who grew up in the laid back surfing culture of Santa Monica, Calif. There was never a doubt in his mind that Manhattan was his college of choice, as he planned to follow in the tried and true footsteps of his father, grandfather and great uncle.

Although Mulvaney immediately felt at home on campus, all the family anecdotes couldn’t prepare him for the fundamental adjustments as he traded his flip-flops for boots and surfboard for a MetroCard.

He remembers his snow-covered debut as the Jaspers pitcher during a game against Seton Hall, joking, “I had never been so cold in my life.”

The different climate and culture pushed Mulvaney to explore new hobbies. This year, he decided to trade in his baseball glove to explore other opportunities on campus. He’s currently a member of the St. Thomas More Law Society and regularly participates in mock trials.

The history major hopes to attend law school and eventually become an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A Perfect Fit

Las Vegas native Mickayla Romero ’15 discovered her passion for education and service during her junior year of high school when she took a course in adaptive physical education. Hoping to find a good education program at a college that offered D1 athletics, she says it felt like an act of providence when Manhattan’s head coach Tom Pardalis contacted her to play softball for the Jaspers.

Making the 3,000-plus-mile trek and learning about Manhattan’s Lasallian heritage, she says, “It was perfect. Manhattan was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Although it’s far from home, she maintains a position she acquired in high school and returns home for winter and summer breaks to work at Opportunity Village, a not-for-profit organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities to enhance their lives and the lives of their families.

Currently, Romero is halfway through Manhattan’s five-year childhood and special education B.S./M.S.Ed. program, and is an integral part of the softball team, named to the MAAC All-Academic Team in 2012. Additionally, she serves as an active member of Kappa Delta Pi, the national honor society for education, and helps with campus and community-wide events.
Confidence to Conquer

“Go far; go find yourself; go see the world,” was the parental advice Ivy Enneking ’14, a chemical engineering major, was given when she began her college search.

Heeding this advice, the Tacoma, W.A. native explains, “When you have to leave your family and home, you have to create your own family there, especially in an urban setting,” Enneking says. “The moment I set foot on campus, I felt a family atmosphere.”

Enneking quickly became a campus leader, serving as a resident assistant and eventually a member of the Model United Nations team. In fact, her participation in a Society of Women Engineers event in Manhattan led to a paid summer internship with Unilever’s Lipton Tea manufacturing plant in Suffolk, Va.

As a part of the quality control department, Enneking was given the responsibility to review the company’s processes and make assessments and recommendations. To her surprise, many of these were accepted and implemented under her supervision. She quickly realized that on the job, age and experience weren’t of utmost importance; she already had the life skills and confidence to get the job done.

“Moving to the East Cost was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the best,” Enneking says. “With that experience, when you have that much responsibility put onto you at a job or an internship, you’re not afraid of it. It feels normal because you’re used to being self-sufficient and make rational, responsible, independent decisions.”

“Manhattan has given me confidence to do what I want to do,” Enneking adds. “It’s great to be leaving college with that peace of mind.”

Manhattan Jaspers Basketball: New York City’s Team
March 10, 2014 12:21 PM
By Andrew Kahn

*** begin quote ***

Syracuse University advertises itself as “New York’s College Team.” St. John’s boasts, “We Are New York’s Team.” If we’re talking about New York City, Manhattan College may have the best case. The Jaspers, unlike Syracuse, play in NYC; while both Syracuse and St. John’s fill their rosters with national talent, Manhattan has eight players from the five boroughs and another from Long Island. As Manhattan’s program rises—tonight it will play in its second straight MAAC championship—its case strengthens.

Manhattan’s third-year head coach Steve Masiello, who is from White Plains, NY, just outside of the city, believes his program, at the very least, belongs in the conversation for the unofficial title of New York City’s team. “We pride ourselves on being Manhattan,” he says. “No other team can say that with the name on their chest. When we go play in Texas or South Carolina, we’re representing New York.” He acknowledged that, like an argument over the king of New York rappers, there could be more than one reasonable answer.

*** and ***

Masiello says New York City kids can be difficult to coach at times because they’ve been told how good they are from a young age. “You have to break them down,” he says. But he also praised their passion. “New York City kids have so much pride about their game. Their identity is basketball unlike other players in country.” He believes a player like senior Emmy Andujar has played so well against local rival Iona because he doesn’t want to hear trash talk on the playgrounds all summer.

Manhattan doesn’t limit its recruiting to New York—the roster includes players from Illinois and Kentucky as well—but if a local player fits the school’s needs and is interested, Masiello wants him. St. John’s, on the other hand, has just one player from the state of New York. Says Masiello: “New York basketball is down across the board. Us New Yorkers need to bring it back.”

Evelyn Infante, international studies major at Manhattan College, is a daily commuter and claims that the income inequality on the subway is impossible to ignore.

“There is no doubt in my mind that NYC has a problem with income equality and ridinf the subway proves it, “Infante said. “If I get on the A train at 42nd Street and I really want a seat, I would go stand next to the people who seem wealthy. A majority of the time, the wealthy looking people get off before the train approaches Utica Avenue, a part of Brooklyn that has not been gentrified.”

Whose ball is it, anyway? Manhattan College basketball fan forced to give up game-winning ball at MAAC championship game at MassMutual Center
By Conor Berry | cberry@repub.com
on March 12, 2014 at 1:00 PM, updated March 12, 2014 at 4:00 PM

SPRINGFIELD — Mike Paluszek, a diehard Manhattan College basketball fan from New York, made the drive up I-91 for Monday night's MAAC championship game at Springfield's MassMutual Center.

Everything was going great for Paluszek, whose beloved Jaspers defeated the No. 1 Iona Gales in a final clash pitting the Catholic college rivals – one in the Lasallian Brother tradition, the other in the Christian Brother tradition – against each other.

Not only did Paluszek's team defeat the Gales, 71-68, but he managed to score the game-winning ball after Jaspers guard George Beamon hurled it high into the stands, sending Manhattan fans scrambling for a game keepsake.

A guy in the row behind Paluszek caught the ball, much to Paluszek's dismay.

"The ball has great value and significance to me as an alum," said Paluszek, a 1980 graduate of the Bronx college who's had season tickets to the Jaspers for more than a decade.

The New Yorker, incapable of accepting defeat, began negotiating with the local man, who was with his two sons.

Paluszek first offered $100 for the ball, but the man who caught the ball didn't budge. "He wavered, talked to his kids, and decided that they wanted to keep the ball," Paluszek said.

The Jaspers fan waited a few more minutes before upping his offer to $200, piquing the father's interest. The man conferred with his sons and, eventually, a deal was struck.

Alas, the ball was Paluszek's – or so he thought.

"With the celebration still going on on the court, and me in my state of exhilaration, excitement and happiness with our big win, I turned toward the court where the players and coaching staff were pointing to and thanking us, the fans in the stands, who had come to support them," Paluszek said.

He said he raised the winning ball up over his head, and made the No. 1 sign with his other hand. A couple of minutes later, Paluszek said he was approached by MassMutual Center staff, who told him to return the ball.

Paluszek explained that he had just given the man who caught the ball $200, but the officials were apparently unmoved by his story. A security guard and a city police officer were now on the scene, telling Paluszek to either give up the ball or go to jail.

"I told the officer my story and said I was willing to get arrested if I could take the ball with me to the police station," Paluszek said.

At that point, he said, the ball was punched out of his hands, ending the brief standoff.

Paluszek wasn't criminally charged, but he did leave the MassMutual Center with mixed feelings – elation for the Jaspers' big win, but disappointment over losing the ball.

And, for losing 200 bucks.

The first time I dropped out of college was somewhere in the winter months of 1994. I can't remember the exact date. There was no Damascus moment where I woke up and decided college wasn't for me, it just kind of happened over a period of weeks, until the point where my mother would have a series of conversations with me, usually while I was watching Countdown or some other day time TV; her voice over my shoulder said something like, if I didn't want to go to college that was fine, but I needed to at least get a decent job.

The second time I dropped out of college I remember precisely. It was January 2000, I was on scholarship on the MBA program at Colorado State University. I had completed my undergraduate degree at Manhattan College in New York and still had a year of eligibility to use under NCAA guidelines. I had carefully evaluated the top athletic programs in the US and decided Colorado was the place for me to try and pursue what by then had developed into a dream of Olympic greatness.

Jerry and his wife, the former Chrissie Layne. herself a Belleville High grad and the love of Jerry's love in high school, would welcome three beautiful daughters into their lives, all of whom are doing well. Eldest daughter Layne has already graduated college, Alexandra is thriving in college while Victoria is preparing to attend college on a softball scholarship at Manhattan College this fall.

Newry: A look back in time – Local link to youngest ever Mayor of New York City
Posted by Seán Ó Sirideán sean-osiridean@newrytimes.com
Thursday, March 13th, 2014 Community, Old Newry

*** begin quote ***

In our new column Newry Times columnist Sean O’Siridean takes a look back through the Newry of old. He takes a step back in time and looks at how history reported on Newry and the surrounding areas through past decades. Today Sean looks at the local link to the youngest ever Mayor of New York City, Mayor Grant.

I was surprised to discover that the youngest ever mayor of New York city could trace his lineage directly to Mayobridge and was a frequent visitor to Newry to visit his aunt, a Mrs Dempsey, who resided on Sugar Island. We have obtained a short excerpt from the Irish News dated 26th February 1892 which documents his last visit to Ireland, where he took in a trip to Bessbrook Linen Mill and Lisummon for the Newry Harriers hunt.

Early life & Politics: Born to Irish immigrants who left Mayobridge for New York in 1856 Mayor Grant unfortunately became orphaned at an early age but overcame those early obstacles to become a successful real estate entrepreneur. He was educated at Manhattan College then spent a year in Berlin.

Back in New York, he studied at St. Francis Xavier College, then Columbia Law School, after which he went into private practice. In 1882 he entered public service and was elected to two terms as Alderman, then one term as Sheriff of New York County. With the backing of Tammany Hall, he was elected Mayor of New York at the age of 31, the youngest in the city’s history.

JNEWS: McKenna, Kevin [MC1975] for Re-election to Shrewsbury Library Board of Trustees

Kevin McKenna to Run for Re-election to Library Board of Trustees
Posted by beth casavant , March 13, 2014 at 02:30 PM

I have been a resident of Shrewsbury since 1984 and a trustee of the Shrewsbury Public Library for over 20 years. This year, I’m running for re-election and would like to ask for your vote. This is a particularly exciting time for the library as we finally begin the process of renovating and expanding the existing structure. We all agree that the library is far more than a physical structure. It is the intellectual heart of our community.

A visit to the library on any day will underscore how vital a service this institution is to Shrewsbury. From children excitedly engaged in exploring the wonders of reading, to teens participating in SPLAT activities, to students getting help researching material for research papers, to adults selecting a book to read or a DVD to watch, the library is daily a center of activity. In my time as trustee, I have served as chair of the search committee that selected Ellen Dolan as our director. I am a member of the Personal Committee. I want to continue to offer my service to the library as we enter this next phase of its development.

I am currently Senior Associate Dean at Clark University. I hold a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Manhattan College. Thank you for considering my candidacy for re-election to the library Board of Trustees.

JHQ: MC President To Receive Robert Fitzgerald Prosody Award

2014-Mar-14

http://manhattan.edu/news/president-receive-robert-fitzgerald-prosody-award

President To Receive Robert Fitzgerald Prosody Award

Brennan O’Donnell to receive prestigious literary award on June 4.

Brennan O’Donnell, president of Manhattan College and a scholar of 19th-century British literature, will receive the 2014 Robert Fitzgerald Prosody Award on June 4 at West Chester University’s Poetry Conference, the largest poetry-only conference in the country. The award is presented to recognize scholars who have made a lasting contribution to the art and science of versification, and is the only prosody prize in the world.

Unique among literary and academic prizes, the Fitzgerald Award was established at West Chester University in 1999 in honor of the poet and critic Robert Stuart Fitzgerald, best known for his poetic translations of ancient Greek and Latin, in addition to several books of his own poetry.

O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College and began the role on July 1, 2009. He is the author of two studies of the poetic technique of William Wordsworth, entitled Numerous Verse and The Passion of Meter: A Study of Wordsworth’s Metrical Art.

“His highly original scholarship has expanded our understanding of the English Romantics,” said Dana Gioia, a former Fitzgerald student, past chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, and a member of the selection committee since the inception of the Prosody Award.

Co-editor of The Work of Andre Dubus, O’Donnell has written and lectured widely on poetry, religion and literature, and on issues in higher education. From 1993 to 2000, he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education and for six years, edited the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education.

“I am honored and humbled to have my work acknowledged in the ranks of so many great scholars in this field,” said O’Donnell. “I’ve learned a great deal from them through the years, and it is gratifying to think that I may have contributed with them to our understanding.”

Prior to working at Manhattan College, he was dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. O’Donnell also spent 17 years at Loyola University Maryland, where he was a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, director of the university-wide honors program.

A graduate with the highest distinction and honors in English from Penn State in 1981, he earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language.

Past recipients of the Robert Fitzgerald Award include Derek Attridge, T. V. F. Brogan, Edward Weismiller, Paul Fussell, George T. Wright, Timothy Steele, Marina Tarlinskaya, John Hollander, Robert B. Shaw, Lewis Turco, Annie Finch, Thomas Cable and Charles Hartman.

William Woods
Obituary

WOODS
William Francis, Sr., passed peacefully in his sleep on February 27th at the age of 88 after a long illness.
'Bill' was born in 1925 in West New York, NJ to Joseph and Mary Woods.

He attended St. Peters Prep, Jersey City, NJ where he won outstanding athletic honors. His athletic prowess won him a scholarship to Manhattan College, New York for football. Woods graduated from Aviation Ordnance School during WWII at the Naval Air Technical training center in Memphis, TN as an aviation ordnance-man and served time in Astoria, OR and Bayonne, NJ. After serving his country in the Navy from 1943-1946, he returned to Manhattan College on a basketball scholarship.

In 1986, he retired from his field of Education from the Ramapo-Indian Hills Regional District in Northern NJ. Woods received his B.A. in Education from Manhattan College, his Masters in Education Administration from NYU, where he also received all the credits towards his Ph.D with the exception of his final dissertation.

The Woods family moved from West New York to Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ in 1952 and resided there until 2013 when he and his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Peggy) (nee Loughran) moved to an independent living complex in Wakefield, RI to be near family.

While teaching and coaching at Ramapo, he also managed the Wyckoff Recreation Program and coached Little League Football in Ho-Ho-Kus, which allowed many young boys of all skill levels to enjoy various sports throughout the years. He believed that all players should play, and all players should receive equal recognition for their contributions.

An avid golfer, he was a long time member at Old Tappan Golf Club, and for many decades a member of St. Luke's R.C. Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ.

Woods is predeceased by his two brothers Joseph J. Woods of Virginia and John Woods of Dumont, NJ. MELVIN L. DECKER, JR.
April 16, 1935 - March 11, 2014
Highland Mills, NY

Melvin L. Decker, Jr. of Highland Mills, NY passed away peacefully at home, Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Born on April 16, 1935, he grew up with his parents, Katherine M. and Melvin L. Decker, Sr. and his younger brother, Martin "Joe", all of whom have predeceased him. He lived in East Elmhurst, NY and Cedar Grove, NJ and spent many summers in Lake Placid, NY. Indeed, some of his favorite memories originated from his working at the "North Pole". A graduate of Brooklyn Prep, he attended Manhattan College, and eventually began working at Sage Instruments, which was where he developed his desire to be an entrepreneur.

In 1962 he married MaryAnn Lawrence. Shortly thereafter, they built their home in Highland Mills, where they raised their five children. There they opened OPTI-QUIP, Inc. in 1970, specializing in bulbs and equipment for research microscopes, and employing many local residents over the years. Mel loved to talk and had an uncanny ability to find a solution to any problem, making friends all along the way. Mel's favorite singer was Frank Sinatra. Befittingly, in his song "My Way", Frank Sinatra infamously sings 'I've lived a life that's full, I traveled each and ev'ry highway, and more, much more than this, I did it my way.' Mel truly embodied those words in every aspect of his own life to the very end.

In addition to MaryAnn, Mel leaves behind two sons: Larry with wife, Jennifer, Timothy with wife, Ellen; three daughters: Kim with Jeff Abrams, Bonnie with husband, Larry Hart, and Nancy with husband, Doug Monroe; six grandchildren: C.J. Marshall with wife, Samantha, Ashley, Brandon and Quinlan Hart; and Sydney and Martin Decker; and one great-granddaughter: Amelia Marshall.

A Funeral Mass in honor of Mel will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 15th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Cornwall, NY, with burial in the spring at St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid, NY. As he wished, a celebration of Mel's life will be held later.

Donations in Mel's name may be made to St. Joseph's Abbey, Attn: Brother Thomas, Treasurer, 167 North Spencer Road, Spencer, MA 01562 or the Woodbury Fire Department, PO Box 643, Highland Mills, NY 10930.

Funeral arrangements made by Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 845-782-8185 or www.ssqfuneralhome.com

[JR: Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. And, imho, WW2 interrupted many plans. A good many who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities. With a 50+ year marriage, that’s a characteristic I see in a lot of Jaspers.]

ENDNOTE: The past is prolog?

Phelps, Stephen E. Jr. (MC1968)

Stephen E. Phelps Jr. shared Isabel Wilkerson's photo.

Lest we forget.

*** begin quote ***

Hattie McDaniel's controversial role as Mammy in "Gone With the Wind" made her, on Feb. 29, 1940, the first African-American to win an Academy Award. She had not been permitted to attend the film's premiere in Atlanta due to segregation in the South. And she had not been permitted even in L.A. to sit with the rest of the cast or others in the film industry, due to custom in California, the day she won the Oscar for best supporting actress.

That day, she was relegated to a table in the back of the banquet hall. It took her so long to get to the podium that the dead air time is frequently cut from clips of that year's ceremony, as she made her way, draped in gardenias, past people who had lost.

McDaniel was the 13th child of a minister and a gospel singer who had been enslaved but migrated to Denver when their daughter was five. She was bright, well-spoken and a skilled singer and songwriter, but found that, when she pursued acting, the only roles offered her were those of servants and maids.

For years, she worked as a maid in real life to make ends meet while taking bit parts as a maid onscreen. It was a measure of the limits on black actresses of the era that the competition for her role as Mammy was as intense as for the role of Scarlet O'Hara.

The NAACP criticized the role as stereotypical and demeaning, while white southerners criticized "Mammy" as acting overly familiar with the white characters and stepping out of her place. McDaniel would make a career of portraying black servants, who oddly enough did not speak or comport themselves as she did in real life. McDaniel defended her decision by pointing out the limited options for women like herself: "Why should I complain about making $700 a week playing a maid? If I didn't, I'd be making $7 a week being one."

Hattie McDaniel died in 1952 at age 57. Her dying wish had been to be buried at Hollywood Cemetery with other leading actors of her time. Even her final wish was not granted. The cemetery was segregated and did not accept black bodies. She was interred at another cemetery in Los Angeles, Angelus-Rosedale, where she remains apart from her peers.

Here's a video of her acceptance speech at the 12th Academy Awards, Feb. 29, 1940. Watch and listen to see how she spoke in real life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7t4pTNZshA
