POSITRACTION: Thank you, Denzel Washington

2014-Feb-16

FROM Colon, Philip J. (MC1962)

Good Evening All,

As we so often pray for the Men and Women of our Armed Forces and their families I am taking the liberty of sharing with you something that John Nason shared with me. What Denzel has done, more than once, no doubt has answered the Prayers of our recuperating Servicemen and Women. In our own fashion, we say thank you to Denzel and say a prayer of thanks for him for the good that he has done. He has gotten very little, if any, press for his Patriotism, goodwill and respect. As someone recently said, " Real Heroes don't wear capes, they wear Dog Tags." Thank you Denzel Washington. God Bless.

Phil Colon

>Please note: This is not the first time he has done something like this......

>Remember this next time you walk up to the ticket window of your local movie theater with $10 in your hand.

>The Media (accidentally?) missed this one!

> The troops overseas would like you to send it to everybody you know.

[JR: The forwarded message continues.]

>The question is, 'Why do: Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise and other Hollywood fluff make front page news with their ridiculous antics and Denzel Washington's Patriotism doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the local newspaper in San Antonio?'

> A true American and friend to all in uniform!

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports progress

2014-Feb-16

Good Afternoon All,

I have just gotten off the phone with Kathleen. She is not wonderful but she is good and there is some improvement in Jim. There has been improvement in his disorientation and he was out of bed and sitting up for a couple of hours this afternoon. There is Bacteria in Jim's Blood and the MDs do not know where it is coming from as of yet. They have brought down his high fever and are pumping him intravenously with anti-bacterial solutions which the Infectious Disease Doctor says Jim will probably be on for several weeks. But as Kathleen says, they can do that back home. She hopes that the MDs can stabilize him to the point where he is able to travel if all other things are gotten under control. Right now with air travel being iffy at best, they are OK where they are but anxious to be back home. Please keep the volume up for Jim and of course Kathleen as we pray that the MDs with a sense of urgency get to the core of the problem. Thank you. God Bless.

MOOERS — In 1975, Art and Norma Menard married three times.

Their love story is one riddled with tempestuous weather in her homeland, the Philippines Islands.

PEACE CORPS

Art, a Mooers native, was the youngest of 13 children of Bernard and Adele Menard. He grew up in the house his father built and where he and Norma live today. He graduated from Mooers Central School in 1966 and majored in math education, grades seven through 12, at Manhattan College.

*** and ***

He had his choice of three countries, and the Philippines Islands were seeking math teachers. He graduated from college in May 1970 and spent two weeks “staging,” a weeding-out process, in San Jose, Calif.

*** and ***

Norma and Art have three children, Leila (Joe) McVeigh, the Rev. Bernie Menard and Robert (Elise) Menard, and two grandchildren.

Art retired in June 2008 after 32 years at Northeastern Clinton. Norma is the executive director at Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County.

“It’s funny really how fate happens to work itself out,” she said. “It’s been a good marriage for us. We both value family, faith, education and community. We share a lot in common.”

If it wasn’t for his sprained ankle, and Norma missing a boat years before, they would never have met.

MFOUND: A great Jesuit school: Manhattan College?
2014-Feb-16

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20140215230819AANcGip

*** begin quote ***

Basically the answer is Too Many to List. Every well known college has strong foreign enrollment programs and they love Canadian applicants because speaking American English is a major asset toward success. I'm not sure if you meant "Columbia" by "UC" but they & NYU are overrated because of PR & Alumni Bragging (although they are excellent schools as well). Think about what cultural co-education you want. If your transfixed on NYC there are three great Jesuit schools: Manhattan College & Fordham University (Both in The Bronx) and Fordham University College at Lincoln Center (west 60th st. in Manhattan). Also consider Loyola. Its also a Jesuit school but its north of The Bronx (Westchester County) and away from the fun. Loyola also has universities in Chicago, New Orleans, and L.A.. Don't let the word "Jesuit" scare you - they are not religion-based schools, just founded by and provisioned by that Order. They are totally secular. Don't worry about your GPA or the absence of AP curricula, your numeric average is excellent and sufficient for acceptance. If you need more ideas please include any ideas on which major/pathway is in your mind - premed (bio-chem) might make Georgetown (Washington DC) a better option. Feel free to keep in touch.

*** end quote ***

Wow, wonder if the Jesuits or the Christian Brothers know?

JHQ: Noah LeFevre, Director of Athletics

2014-Feb-17

Noah LeFevre Named Director of Athletics at Manhattan College Courtesy: Manhattan Athletics Department
Release: 02/17/2014

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Noah LeFevre, currently Manhattan College’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics, will become the next Director of Athletics at Manhattan College, it was announced today by President Brennan O'Donnell and Vice President Richard Satterlee, who led the national search. LeFevre will replace current Director of Athletics Robert J. Byrnes ’68, who will retire in June 2014 after serving in the position for 26 years.

A formal press conference will be held in Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 19 at 2 p.m. on the Manhattan College campus.

“Noah’s commitment to the Manhattan College student-athlete experience combined with his administrative expertise and skill make him an asset to the College,” Manhattan College President Brennan O’Donnell stated. “I wholeheartedly support Noah’s appointment as our next Director of Athletics. We are impressed by his strategic vision, work with head coaches and his overall commitment to the program and the College.”

LeFevre has served as the Senior Associate Director of Athletics since January 2012. In that position, LeFevre is responsible for the athletic department units of intercollegiate sports, academic support, development, facilities and event management, compliance, athletic training, equipment services and human resources. He supervises Manhattan College’s intercollegiate athletic programs and works with all of Manhattan’s head coaches on scholarship allocation, contest scheduling, hiring of assistant coaches, fundraising, budgeting, roster sizes, travel and strategic planning. In 2012, LeFevre developed a seven-year strategic athletic scholarship plan that is aimed at improving the program’s overall level of athletic competitiveness.

“I thank President O’Donnell for having the confidence in me to lead this historic program,” LeFevre said. “I also want to thank the search committee, led by Vice President for Student Life Dr. Richard Satterlee, for its faith in me. I am honored to work in an environment that I view as a special place where student success is the top priority. I am most humbled to follow in the footsteps of Bob Byrnes and continue to build on the foundation he has created the last quarter century.”

While at Manhattan, LeFevre spearheaded the creation of the Jasper Athletic Club (JAC), Manhattan Athletics’ official fundraising arm, in the summer of 2012. He also led the refurbishing of Draddy Gymnasium in the summer of 2012. LeFevre led the funds for and oversaw the construction and installation of new batting cages, storage areas, scoreboards, facility signage and branding, facility painting, as well as locker room and office upgrades and renovations.

Prior to coming to Riverdale, LeFevre served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at The College of Brockport in Brockport, N.Y. While at Brockport, LeFevre oversaw the day-to-day operations of a 23-sport athletic program that served more than 625 student-athletes and an extensive fleet of athletic facilities with 12 different competition venues, including Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium, the largest on-campus sporting venue among Division III institutions.

LeFevre has also served as an Associate Director of Athletics at New York University (NYU), where he was responsible for athletic department marketing, facilities, revenue generation and capital planning. He also was the project manager for the internal design and construction, and then as director of NYU’s Palladium Athletic Facility, an 80,000-square foot complex that sees more than 2,300 daily patrons. During his time at NYU, eight different athletic teams finished in the top four nationally, including a 2007 Division III National Championship in men’s cross country.

For his hard work and dedication to the department, LeFevre received the NYU Distinguished Administrator Award in 2007, the highest recognition an NYU administrator can earn.

LeFevre holds an MBA from NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, and a Master’s degree in sports management from NYU’s Robert Preston Tisch Center for Sports Management, along with a bachelor’s degree from NYU. He also holds a certificate from the Sports Management Institute (SMI), the premiere athletic administrative development academy in the country. LeFevre completed his SMI program on the campuses of the University of Michigan and the University of Texas.

LeFevre (@JasperNoah) and his wife, Hayley Gershengorn, M.D., reside in Manhattan.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) asks for more for Jim Smith

2014-Feb-18

Good Afternoon All,

I am sharing an update on Jim Smith as received from John Nason this morning.
Phil: I just spoke to Kathleen Smith. Jim is still not stabilized and still undergoing tests. She is flying back to NY this morning to "tie up some loose ends" and will turn around and return to FL as quickly as possible. Meanwhile his son is here with him at the hospital. The cause of his problem is still undetermined but she expects that Jim will be in rehab down there "for 4 or 5 weeks" she thinks. We'd like to drive up to see him but she suggests we wait until he gets into rehab before paying him a call. All in all, he's not nearly out of the woods yet. John

Please keep the volume up for Jim and Kathleen during this uncertain time as we pray that the MDs diagnose Jim's problem and form a course of treatment. They would of course want to be treated at home but the MDs do not want him to travel until he is at least stabilized. Thank you John for keeping us informed. Thank you. God Bless.

JBLOGGER: Stagnaro, Melissa (MC1997) blogs about her Dad

Daddy’s Little Girl: What I’ve learned since losing my dad
by The Accidental Blonde on February 10, 2014

*** begin quote ***

This weekend, a post reminded me that today was a somber anniversary for three siblings I call friends. You see, two years ago, they lost their dad.

Frederick L. Stagnaro (a.k.a. Fred, Roy, Uncle Fred, Gramps, the Pops, Freddy, Fred-o…)
My dad, Frederick L. Stagnaro (a.k.a. Fred, Roy, Uncle Fred, Gramps, Dad, the Pops, Freddy, Fred-o…)

Truth was, I didn’t need to be reminded. I’ll never forget the death of their dad, because he died just two weeks after my father. In my heart, their grief is inexorably linked with mine.

This may seem odd, particularly given the fact that we’ve been more acquaintances than friends for most of our lives. I didn’t really know their dad; they didn’t really know mine. But now we share this bond; a bond formed out of the pain of losing one of the most important people in our lives. For we had each stood by, helpless, as the men who had been our heroes our whole lives passed from our world into the next.

My dad fought a courageous three-year battle with cancer. They were three incredibly difficult years. In the end, I knew it was his time. He was in so much pain, and I didn’t want to see him suffer any longer.

Losing him tore my heart out. And I knew I would never, ever be the same. Don’t get me wrong, I put one foot in front of the other. Life hasn’t stopped, but it’s as if my personal history is now broken into two distinct parts: before my dad died and after.

Just 34, Josephine Zurica named principal at Manhattan sustainability firm Dagher Engineering
February 20, 2014
Displayed with permission from PR Newswire

NEW YORK,, Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- After just six years as a professional engineer with Dagher Engineering, 34-year old Josephine Zurica has been named principal at the firm, marking another unconventional move by this Manhattan-based engineering and sustainability consulting company known for going in bold directions. Josephine came to Dagher fresh from a tour in Panama with the Peace Corps. Despite her youth and relatively short time at the company, founding principal Elias Dagher says she is the ideal person to join him and principal Richard Pearson in leading the 40-member firm.

"Josephine has instincts that can't be taught and skills some people never learn. She came with very broad life experience and she is a good listener. Listening is key in our firm's culture," said Dagher, who started the company in 2000, specializing in sustainable MEP design at a time when green building science was in its infancy in the U.S. "We very quickly put Josephine in front of clients, and even if they were unsure at first, they quickly came around and trusted her," Dagher said, noting Josephine tends to lead from behind. "She's humble. Like our firm, she shows her expertise through her work."

"I feel privileged to move into this new role at Dagher," said Josephine. "Our firm is unique in the way we view our role as not just MEP engineers but collaborators in the building design process. We believe that understanding the unique needs of each project is key. I look forward to continue promoting these ideals through my new position with Dagher."

A registered Professional Engineer in the State of New York and a LEED Accredited Professional, Josephine is in the process of obtaining a certification as a Passive House Consultant and has professional expertise in building modeling and simulation, energy conservation, historic renovation, and sustainable project management. Her portfolio with Dagher Engineering includes the award winning net-zero design for the Housatonic River Museum in Pittsfield, MA and the historic renovation of Wave Hill House, a cultural center and garden in Riverdale, NY, as well as the management of the design for the Brooklyn Bridge Pier 1 mixed-use development

Josephine studied mechanical engineering at Manhattan College and earned her MS in Environmental Engineering from Michigan Technological University. In addition to Josephine's time in the Peace Corps she has also volunteered her professional service through involvement with Engineers without Borders and is currently working with a team to design compost latrines and promote health education in El Salvador.

Dagher Engineering ( www.dagherengineering.com) is an award-winning building systems engineering and sustainability consulting firm based in New York City. Their portfolio includes work in the commercial office + retail, cultural, educational, healthcare, hospitality, and residential market sectors for both U.S-based and international clients.

JFOUND: Brown, Richard R. [MC1981] running for School Board in Moultonborough NH

Saturday, February 22, 2014
Statement from School Board Candidate Richard Brown

>>> Hello, my name is Richard Brown, I’m running for School Board here in Moultonborough. I have two sons attending school in town, Hunter in 8th grade and Logan in 5th grade. We bought property here just over six years ago and built our home on the Neck near Geneva Point Center and have lived here for four years. I have also been coming here for vacations over the last twenty five years visiting my sister and her family who have a home here in Far Echo.
>>>
>>> There are many reasons why we moved here, including the Library, the lake, the mountains, the size and make-up of the community and most of all the quality of education. I knew about the quality of the schools and education here from two sources, a cousin who taught at Interlakes for 40 years and a niece who Student taught here in Moultonborough nearly 10 years ago.
>>>
>>> I was born in Ashland, grew up in Exeter and have lived in NY, NJ, CT, PA, CA, NV, IA and GA as well as in Europe. The reason why I mention this is simply to say that I have seen a lot of education systems and schools and feel that we are fortunate to have our own school district here in Moultonborough and as a result, the ability to keep the education for our sons and daughters at a high level.
>>>
>>> What makes me qualified to be a School Board member? Primarily a diverse background, including growing up in a working class family. A Father who worked in the Mills of Ashland as a Weaver, worked for Mobil Oil as a truck driver, a Lab. Tech and eventually a Distribution plant Supervisor. A mother who worked as a Homemaker for a family of four, a Bank teller, a Secretary for the Asst. Principal of Exeter High School, a Secretary for the President of a Seacoast Bank and finally getting her College degree from UNH.
>>> .
>>> My parents instilled in me a desire to work for the things you wanted and to set goals. I became an Eagle Scout at the age of 14…I think it was easier for me than most simply because I had a brother four years older who became an Eagle and I was busy chasing him!
>>> After High School, I joined the military and became a Sergeant in the Army after 2 years and spent a total of six years in the Army. I spent most of my time in A Europe where I was a Paratrooper and trained with many foreign military units. I attended German Jump School, Special weapons and Armorers school as well as French Commando School.
>>> After time in the military, I attended College at Manhattan College in New York City, where I graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. I worked as a Security Guard and for a small Engineering firm while I attended College.
>>>
>>> Once I graduated from college, I took a job with United Engineers and Constructors at Seabrook Station here in NH and worked as a Construction Engineer and Area Engineering Manager for three years.
>>>
>>> I eventually went to work for UPS as a Project Engineer designing and building their facilities in the Northeast. I spent over 26 years at UPS all over the world working in four different Regions and our Corporate office. While I was there, I held many positions in Engineering and Operations. During my 26 years I had several memorable assignments and responsibilities. A few of the more enjoyable assignments were teaching UPS management school, and developing and teaching UPS Project Management, Maintenance and Environmental workshops for the company. I also obtained a Project Management Certificate from George Washington University and a LEED certification from the Green Buildings Institute. My final assignment at UPS was as head of the Corporate Project Management and Environmental Groups responsible for both those activities World wide. A typical annual budget for my areas of responsibility would have been between eighty and one hundred million dollars.
>>>
>>> Currently, I serve our town as Chairman of the CIPC(committee), work as an on-call Fireman and am a leader in our Boy Scout troop.
>>>
>>> I think service to your Community is an important example to set for our children and ask that you consider me when you vote for School Board.
>>>
>>> I would like to have attended and spoken to you at the local meet the candidates night but, I will be out of town for the week on a trip to Florida with our Boy Scouts.
>>>
>>> Thank you, Richard R. Brown

United Nations Report Rips Catholic Schools, Vatican
February 6, 2014, at 9:34 AM | By Matthew Archbold

*** begin quote ***

A United Nations committee’s criticisms of the Catholic Church’s handling of sexual abuse by clergy outrageously included criticisms of Catholic schools that rise to the level of anti-Catholicism, argues Deacon Keith Fournier at Catholic Online.

“It intruded into the doctrine, teaching, discipline and rights of the Church,” he writes. “It insisted that the Church change its unchangeable teachings. It even scolded the Church on how she instructs children in Catholic schools and sought to impose a curriculum.”

Why are my tax dollars used to support the UN, Gooferment Skrules, and immoral activities?

Argh!

Time for secession.

I do NOT consent!
