POSITRACTION:"divorce, she ducked"

He said he was leaving. She ignored him. When Laura Munson's husband asked for a divorce, she ducked instead of fighting. He needed to learn, she says, that his unhappiness wasn't really about her

I barbecued. Made lemonade. Set the table for four. Loved him from afar.

And one day, there he was, home from work early, mowing the lawn. A man doesn't mow his lawn if he's going to leave it. Not this man. Then he fixed a door that had been broken for eight years. He made a comment about our front porch needing paint. Our front porch. He mentioned needing wood for next winter. The future. Little by little, he started talking about the future.

It was Thanksgiving dinner that sealed it. My husband bowed his head humbly and said, "I'm thankful for my family."

He was back.

Patrick McCartney
Obituary

Patrick A. McCartney, age 53, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, February 7, 2014 after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

Pat was born in New York City on September 14, 1960 to Dorothy and the late Patrick E. McCartney. He grew up in Hempstead, NY with his five younger brothers and sisters, Liz, Joe, Paul, Mary Ellen and Deirdre and a large close extended family. After graduating Chaminade High School (1978) and Manhattan College (1981), Pat attended Hofstra University School of Law (1984) where he met his wife Terri.

He joined the law firm of Emmet Marvin and Martin in 1986 and became a partner in 1992. Pat was a Solicitor of England and Wales. He served on the board of Domus in Stamford for 14 years and was the president of Trailblazers Academy for more than 10 years.

Pat was a charismatic guy. He had the rare gift of truly being able to listen to and care about all those around him - everyone who met him felt special. Family, faith and friends were most important to him. Pat loved to golf, was an avid skier, enjoyed traveling and sports. Music was a large part of Pat's life. He listened to a broad range of musical styles and loved nothing more than hearing live bands.

In addition to his loving wife Terri of 28 years, Patrick is survived by his three children, Lauren, Patrick and Thomas, his mother Dorothy, five siblings, four brothers-in-law, five sisters in law, nineteen nieces and nephews, three uncles, thirty-seven first cousins and countless colleagues and friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to: Domus, Attn: Development, 83 Lockwood Ave., Stamford CT, 06902. Family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, February 10, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 9pm at the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11am at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 469 North Street, in Greenwich, CT. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, North Street (entrance), in Greenwich, CT. The McCartney family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. Sag Harbor Baking Company Is a Tasty Treat

*** begin quote ***

To judge from the dazed-with-delight customers who squeeze into the teeny-tiny Sag Harbor Baking Co. off Division Street, sweets are here to stay. Seductive scents take over as soon as the door is opened, the key is to give over to the moment, as the eye confirms what the nose promises—a select array of aromatic goodies. Gorgeous-looking cookies, breads, muffins, cupcakes, pastries, focaccias, croissants, lemon squares and more are attractively laid out on counters and shelves, and a blackboard of the day’s offerings promises even more.

*** and ***

Yardley is one of Sag Harbor Baking Company’s two owners. A graduate of Pierson High School and Sag Harbor Elementary School, where she first met her future business partner, Margaret Brooks. After graduating from Manhattan College Yardley became a CPA and worked in the city for a while at Ernst & Young. Brooks studied economics at SUNY Albany and then Business at Cal State in L.A. before going to the California Culinary Academy in California and embarking on a 20-year career there as a pastry chef in bakeries and restaurants. She says that chefs have to be “quick and fast” but pastry chefs’ work is “scientific and methodical.”

JFACEBOOK: 2014 Manhattan Track & Field and Cross Country reunion

2014-Feb-09

FOUND ON FACEBOOK

Daniel Loughney

Al Novell sent this out the other day. Last reunion was a great event. Looking forward to getting together again.

Hi fellow Jaspers,

In 2011, we had our first ever Manhattan Track & Field and Cross Country reunion. We packed Smith Auditorium that day in October...and everyone had a great time! I have gotten many requests recently from former teammates wanting to have another reunion. So on Saturday, September 27, 2014, we will have another chance at seeing our old friends.

A core team (currently Tom Donahue '71, Mark Codd '71, Jim Kenny '69 and myself '70), has put together a preliminary agenda for the day that hopes to have a Manhattan Cross-Country dual meet (new coach, Pat Slevin, will advise) down at Van Cordtlandt Park, a possible 5K fun-run over the same course for ourselves, a tour of the new Ray Kelly Student center, and a 5 pm to 11 pm reunion event ...again in Smith Auditorium.

We are in the beginning stages of putting this together so many details will take shape later......but the date is set for September 27th.

Why this early notice ? We want to get the first shot at getting on your calendar. Also, this will give you a long lead time to track down your old teammates and get them to join us. This is YOUR reunion. The more Jasper teammates you get to come, the better time you will have. The Class of 1971 led the way last time with 11 people and had a blast !

I don't have everyone's email address, so please reach out to those teammates that you keep in touch with and let them know about the 2014 reunion.

I also ask you to let me know if you plan to come as soon as possible. This is not a commitment ....money won't be collected until August... but a tool for letting others see who is planning to be there (barring unknown events). As before, spouses and family are welcome.

Best wishes,
Al Novell - Class of 1970

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) has a gentler judgment of Seeger

2014-Feb-09

Dear f. John,

Don't forget that our beloved Christian Brothers are (small "c") communists.

AFAIK, Pete Seeger never advocated for the violent overthrow of our government, but simply thought, for awhile that a different economic system might be more fair and just. Also, AFAIK, once he later saw the unfortunate political and human rights situation, that he renounced his membership in the Communist Party. We have to rid ourselves of the 1950’s - "are you now, or have you ever been..." mentality. What do you think you might have done before the kangaroo court of the HUAC in the 50’s? I hope - but am not always confident - that I would have taken the risk of non-cooperation that Pete did.

I am sure Pete had the clay feet that all of us do - but I don’t think that being part of the Communist movement - before the details of the brutality that the Stalinist government attached to it became known - is a great indictment.

Thanks, as always, for your good work as CIC. If you decide that a paid distribution service is needed, I’ll be happy to sign-up for a subscription that shares the cost -- kind or a communist thing... :-)...

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

[JR: I just think that everyone goes nuts without remembering the complete picture. As we all do. I have no problem with anyone who choses freely. Like the Brothers. Unfortunately, we don’t get that with all the “Kings” and their diktats!

Who knows what we’ll do when the time comes. That’s why I only want small temptations. To match my character and ability.

Stalin, Communism, Fascism, and even “democracy” all seem to force folks to do stuff they don’t want to do. As a little L libertarian, if something is a great idea, then people won’t need to be forced to do it.

The distribution should remain free, just moving to “paid service”. Where I should have put it originally. Right now it looks like zero. But might be 120$ / year. If a lot of people sign up. You can be an alpha tester. Laff! Always a dangerous assignment.

Thanks for the kind words. Nice to know someone reads this stuff.]

Holy Trinity Interparochial School gym was abuzz as never before as a sell-out crowd enjoyed an afternoon of basketball during a charity game coached by former N.Y. Knicks stars Larry Johnson and John Starks.

The emcees and play-by-play announcers for the event were New Jersey Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick (R-21) and Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky. Johnson was his typical showman self trading comments with Bramnick, cheering on his players and razzing Starks and his players.

Fred was a practicing professional engineer for 20 years before starting his legal career. He began his professional career as a materials test engineer in the military aerospace industry evaluating aircraft components, manufacturing techniques, and engineering alloys. While attending law school at night, Fred continued to work as an engineering manager and in his last year of law school, as a scientific advisor/patent agent for an intellectual property law firm in NY City. After graduation, he became an associate for the same firm. He then went to a small patent boutique in New Jersey, where he continued to develop his patent prosecution skills.

JFOUND: Boivin, Ben [MC2009] NOLA visit

2014-Feb-14

http://edmundinnola.blogspot.com/

The first is from Ben Boivin, an Admissions and Financial Aide Counselor at Manhattan College, the home of the “Jaspers”. Himself a 2009 graduate of Manhattan College, this was his second time heading a team of 11 students in a Lasallian group doing service in New Orleans. They came to us Friday evening at the end of their time in NOLA to have a meal and meet our long-term volunteers [all Iona “Gaels”] and reflect on their experience of Christian service in New Orleans. [See the previous blog post.]

Br. John
For the second year in a row, my visit to NOLA has been the most powerful experience of my life. On the flight home I thought about our reflection on Friday night. It is difficult to get 11 college students together on any given Friday night, but that particular evening was maybe the best one they will have in their college career. Our group was buzzing with excitement and energy and that is due to you Brothers and the incredible volunteers. I am so glad that through Marita Keane, we were able to share thoughts and emotions once again. Your hospitality means a lot to the Jaspers.
Blue skies,
Ben Boivin

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has another request

2014-Feb-15

Good Morning All,

I just heard from Bill Harkins and we need to raise the volume for a dear friend, Jim Smith. Bill spoke with Kathleen, Jim's Wife, on Friday. Jim and Kathleen have been on vacation in Stuart, Florida. Jim was taken to the Emergency Room in Stuart. His initial problem was serious pain in his ankle but it seems to be more than that. He has a Virus running through his body causing high fever and disorientation. It is not yet clear what the problem is but it is worrisome. Please keep Jim and Kathleen in your prayers as we pray that the MDs diagnose the problem and solution quickly and get Jim back on his feet. Thank you. God Bless.

Phil,

We need to add Jim Smith to our prayer list. I just spoke to his wife Kathleen
who is with him in Florida where they have been vacationing. Jim was admitted to
the emergency room at the hospital in Stuart. His initial problem was serious
pain in his ankle but it's more than that - he's got a virus running through his
body causing high fever and disorientation. Not clear what it is but it's very
worrisome. He needs our prayers.

Love in Paris - IES Abroad Alumni Kevin & Pat
Date: Friday, February 14, 2014

*** begin quote ***

For the final alumni couple in our weeklong "Love In..." series, we've featured Kevin and Pat Fox, who met while studying with IES Abroad in Paris in 1965-66. Often referred to as the "City of Love," we thought it only fitting to save this one for Valentine's Day.

Kevin was a History major at Manhattan College and Pat studied English and French at the University of Pittsburgh. They chose Paris mainly because, well, it's Paris! Their story is special in that it's told from both perspectives.

ENDNOTE: Liberal versus conservative

http://www.acton.org/pub/religion-liberty/volume-5-number-1/time-has-come-reevaluate-strategy-change

*** begin quote ***

R&L: In the past, you have noted that some religious leaders fail to uphold this vision.

Higgins: There is a problem of late, particularly with the mainline denominations, and certainly with some of the Catholic bishops. The problem lies in their calls for social action. I am left with the distinct feeling that these clergy have abandoned one of religion’s most important roles: to act as an agent for change and improvement within a community. But they refuse to do it themselves, and instead become goads for government action. Thus, in essence, they lose their moral authority and we lose one of the primary institutions for affecting responsible change.

R&L: Could you speculate as to why this has become the trend? What sort of forces have caused the leadership of the established churches to behave in this way?

Higgins: Government solutions are very tempting. If you think about it, who wouldn’t want to go to a central entity which has the power to immediately affect the entire country with vast resources? It’s much more satisfying to feel you have done something on a national level rather than merely in your own back yard; though in reality it is more effective to pursue the latter. It seems to me that many people became uncomfortable with religion, particularly in the ’60s with its secular trends. Even the religious people bought into the idea that one shouldn’t impose one’s values on someone else. They wanted to do good without any strings attached. So if you asked the government to do it, your personal sense of good would remain intact and you would be less criticized.

Also, the churches use government more and more because the reasons for doing good have changed. The question is–What needs to change? The individual or society? You used to do good because you wanted to help the person in need have a better life by helping themselves. Later thinkers amend society, rather than the individual. Government policies were thus pursued because they made us feel good about ourselves; we were “doing something” by calling for a government program. Considerably less care was paid to whether something actually worked and benefited its intended beneficiaries.

It was also a cheap and easy way out. When the government tackles a problem, you have a lot more leisure time because you don’t have to volunteer yourself. Someone else solves the problem for you while you feel morally virtuous for making grand statements about what the government ought to be doing about it.

*** end quote ***

So there we have it. The leaders take the easy way out and let the Gooferment assume their role.

I'd add that the pedophilia scandals have blunted the Church standing against the King.
