POSITRACTION: Mary A. “Pink” Mullaney admonished me

2014-Feb-02

This Woman’s Obituary is the Best Thing You’ll Read Today
September 12, 2013

*** begin quote ***

When Mary A. “Pink” Mullaney passed away on September 1st, she left behind 6 children and 17 grandchildren. “Pink” was so adored by her family that they wrote the most amazing obituary for her, filled with her very own advice to the rest of the world. Read it – it’ll put a smile on your face:

*** and ***

Go to a nursing home and kiss everyone. When you learn someone’s name, share their patron saint’s story, and their feast day, so they can celebrate. Invite new friends to Thanksgiving dinner. If they are from another country and you have trouble understanding them, learn to “listen with an accent.”

*** and ***

Offer rides to people carrying a big load or caught in the rain or summer heat. Believe the hitchhiker you pick up who says he is a landscaper and his name is “Peat Moss.”

Help anyone struggling to get their kids into a car or shopping cart or across a parking lot.

Give to every charity that asks. Choose to believe the best about what they do with your money, no matter what your children say they discovered online.

Allow the homeless to keep warm in your car while you are at Mass.

 *** end quote ***

Wow, this was a slap in my face.

All I could think of was “Mother Teresa”.

I’ll have a lot of time in Purgatory, … or worse … for all the opportunities I missed.

Argh!

Very upsetting.

I’m sure my fellow alums will not share my dismay.

JNEWS: Nicholas, Douglas (MC1964) Reviews of his book "THE WICKED"

2014-Feb-04

http://scribe5.wix.com/something-red#!the-wicked/cmny

Review of THE WICKED in LIBRARY JOURNAL:

The 13th-century traveling troupe of players from Nicholas's debut, Something Red, returns in another meticulously plotted and researched blend of horror and historical fantasy. Irish queen-in-exile Molly and her granddaughter Nemain learn of a supernatural entity preying upon those living along North Sea coast. The two, with help from strongman Jack and 15-year-old Hob, must stop a local nobleman who seems able to drain the life force from people and leave them as either withered corpses or mindless slaves. More suspenseful and gothic than the gorier first novel, this sequel also shows readers more of Molly's pagan powers as she pits them against the vampiric Sir Tarquin. VERDICT An almost Dickensian level of detail transports readers to medieval England in poet Nicholas's gorgeously written novel. The players, especially point-of-view character Hob, are nuanced and interesting, but it is the setting and tense action that make this a gripping read.

# - # - #

Review from the Historical Novel Society:
The Wicked
By Douglas Nicholas

In this sequel to the well-received Something Red, travelling entertainers Molly, Jack, Nemain, and Hob are in 13th-century northern England at Castle Blanchefontaine. Molly is actually a mystical Irish battle queen, Nemain is her powerful granddaughter, and Jack, a former Crusader, is helping Hob learn warrior skills. They have defeated a great evil, but are asked to fight a bigger and even more dangerous supernatural enemy. The quartet must deal with many dangers, such as a nefarious noble couple, fearsome, glowing-eyed familiars, weirdly spell-bound knights, and grotesque corpses of murdered unfortunates. The fate of the world is at stake, and they may not be victorious.

This book is harsher and more violent than Something Red. While it has elements of history, mystery, and romance, they are overshadowed by the horror theme. The faint-hearted may want to sleep with the lights on after finishing this book. Still, by the end of the story Nicholas is writing evocative, poetic scenes for Nemain and Hob that are a joyful contrast to all the terror and violence that went before. Recommended with reservations.

Review from Kirkus Reviews:

THE WICKED
Author: Douglas Nicholas

Review Issue Date: February 15, 2014
Online Publish Date: February 6, 2014
Publisher:Emily Bestler/Atria
Pages: 368
Price ( Paperback ): $16.00
Publication Date: March 25, 2014
ISBN ( Paperback ): 978-1-4516-6024-1
Category: Fiction

Nicholas’ sequel to his historical saga, Something Red (2012), continues the haunting tale of exiled Irish queen Maeve and her cohorts in medieval north England.

Maeve’s troop rests at the castle of the Sieur de Blanchefontaine, Sir Jehan, the place where she defeated an evil presence, one appearing as a fox "the size of a small horse." Maeve is with her granddaughter, Nemain; former crusader Jack Brown; and the orphan Hob, now Squire Robert under Sir Jehan’s patronage. Word of trouble comes from lands of the Sieur de Chantemerle, Sir Odinell. A Northumbria newcomer, Sir Tarquin, is "secretive," "barely civil," and soon after his arrival, "affairs began to go awry." Knights are spellbound. Peasants disappear and are found as corpses, "horribly wizened…skin…brown and harsh as bark…interior collapse along fault lines deep in the flesh." Sir Jehan persuades Maeve to help Sir Odinell. After the journey to castle Chantemerle, Maeve glimpses evil emanating from Sir Tarquin and realizes "there’s a fell being that haunts this coast: something dire, something vast." Nicholas is a marvelously descriptive writer, littering the narrative with images of table fare at inns ("cruppy-dows, cakes made of oatmeal and fish”), medieval dialects ("a few miles tae t’sooth, sithee”) and battledress ("mail hauberks and coifs, armored gloves, greaves, and helms”). Major character development comes as Hob matures into the future-queen Nemain’s worthy betrothed and warrior-protector, and the dark, violent tale moves rapidly as Maeve’s troop journeys through desperate adventures and into Northumbria, meeting charcoal makers, slaying bandits and staying a "sennight" at Abelard Inn awaiting the summons of Sir Odinell to confront Sir Tarquin. And much like a more profound Harry Potter for adults, Nicholas’ fantasy-laced knights-of-old saga ends with opportunity for more to come.

Nicholas weaves the magic of wizards and sorceress—buidseach and cailleach phiseogach—so naturally into the medieval milieu that Maeve’s tale reads as entertaining historical fiction rather than a fey supernatural tale.

Joseph Patrick Howard
Obituary

Howard, Joseph Patrick

Joseph Patrick Howard, an Irish Catholic son of the Bronx, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 31, with his wife of 54 years, Ann (Smyth) Howard, by his side. He was 81.

A proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served his country during the Korean War, he worked for more than three decades for IBM and later the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In his retirement, he traveled with his wife to the shrines at Medjugorje and to the Ireland of his heritage.

His deep belief in education, fostered among his children and grandchildren, was further evidenced when, in his 60s, he returned to school and received a Master's degree in Finance from Manhattan College to go with his earlier diploma from St. John's University.

Born in Washington Heights on Oct. 9, 1932 to John and Catherine Howard, he moved to the Bronx at age 12 and was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School.

He was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Shrub Oak since moving to Yorktown, N.Y. in 1967. He was an avid painter of scenic watercolors and also enjoyed photography, classical music and writing. His novel, "The Tribe," published in 2009, illustrated what it was like to grow up Irish Catholic in the post-War Bronx.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister, Frances (James); his seven children, Eileen (Craig), Cathi (Raul), Anthony (Alison), Mary Beth (Joseph), Claire (Martin), Teresa (Peter) and Brian (Kristen); 19 grandchildren and countless friends. His children will always remember his unquestioning dedication to his family, his expansive knowledge of a broad array of topics, his generosity of spirit and deed and his unfailing love of making others laugh.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Medical Mission Sisters, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111.

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) reports Judge Keenan [MC1951] gets mentioned in the NYT

2014-Feb-05

Dear John,

Yesterday's NY Times has an article about an interesting and unusual case decided by Judge Keenan,'51 about a young man, who is self described as an anarchist, who refused to testify before a Grand Jury and was jailed for contempt. The Judge released him, despite his continued refusal to testify, when he wrote "There will never come a time for Koch (the young man) where his only remaining option is to testify. . .The court concludes that continued confinement will not move Koch from the reflexive ideology that forbids his cooperation with the serious investigation at hand."

An interesting concept.

JNEWS: Carbonell, Ruben [MC1969] elected to the National Academy of Engineering

2014-Feb-06

http://bulletin.ncsu.edu/2014/02/carbonell-elected-to-nae/

Chemical engineering professor Ruben Carbonell has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honors in the field. He is one of 67 new members and 11 foreign associates announced by the academy Thursday.

Carbonell was cited for “research and innovation in multiphase reactor design, high-pressure thin-film coating, and novel bioseparation processes.”

In the early 1980s, he developed a new mathematical model to describe the hydrodynamic performance of trickle bed reactors that are useful in petroleum processing. In the mid-1990s, his research group developed a novel way of identifying small, inexpensive and robust peptide ligands for the purification of proteins from biological sources by affinity chromatography.

Carbonell’s work was instrumental in identifying specific ligands for the removal of the prion protein that is responsible for variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, better known as Mad Cow Disease, in humans. He led the development of a process for making a novel filter to be used for the removal of prion protein from human blood during transfusions. One of these ligands is also being used to reduce the risk of prion transmission during intravenous injections of therapeutics such as antibodies derived from pooled human plasma.

Carbonell is a fellow of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. His numerous awards at NC State include the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest award given to university faculty. He has published over 230 papers, is an inventor with more than 30 patents and is co-founder of two start-up companies.

Carbonell earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Manhattan College in 1969 and a Ph.D. from Princeton in 1973. He spent 10 years in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Davis before joining NC State in 1984.

He served as head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at NC State from 1994 to 1999 and was also co-director of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes from 1999 to 2008.

Carbonell is the director of the William R. Kenan Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science and has led the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center on Centennial Campus since 2008.

He is the 12th current NC State faculty member to be elected to the NAE, a private, independent nonprofit organization that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. Two emeritus faculty members are also members.

JFOUND: Hammer, Edward E. [MC1954 RIP] cited as "Father of CFL Bulbs" Inventor

2014-Feb-06

http://cfllights.weebly.com/1/post/2014/01/brief-history-about-the-father-of-cfl-bulbs-inventor.html

Brief History About The Father of CFL Bulbs Inventor
01/26/2014

Edward E. Hammer(December 27, 1931 - July 16, 2012)

Personal profile:

One person who could see the need for change was Edward E. Hammer, a retired General Electric engineer who invented compact fluorescent while working at the company in the 1970s.

Education:

He received his bachelor's degree from Manhattan College.

Contributions:

The world has witnessed remarkable progress in the development of electrical light sources. Since 1980, the main source of the light was incandescent bulbs. His technological contributions in incandescent, fluorescent and HID light sources earned him over 35 patents. CFL Bulb Manufacturers in Delhi The increasing energy costs have made Hammer's invention a quickly growing part of the consumer market. Early in his career Hammer worked directly under Richard Thayer, Hammer served as group coordinator for several successful energy saving projects, such as the F-40 Watt Miser lamp, which consisted of the standard linear four-foot T12 bulb. Hammer was interested in determining if he could develop a fluorescent lamp that might replace the incandescent light bulbs used in portable lamps. However, the idea of manufacturing a helical fluorescent tubing lamp had to be approved by management.

Household CFLs much efficient on 13 to 25 watts of energy, far less than 60- to 100-watt traditional bulbs, and thus have become a popular dividsion with consumers trying to diminish the energy costs.

GE assigned Hammer to work on energy efficient bulbs at its labs in Nela Park, Ohio, during the first U.S. energy crisis in the mid-'70s. CFL Manufacturers in India His first invention was a standard-shaped 40-watt fluorescent lamp, called the F-40 Watt Miser, in 1973. He changed the gas used in manufacturing of lamps and tweaked various components inside the lamp.

Next came the CFL bulbs; these Bulbs and fluorescent light, however, are not a mixture of natural . Fluorescent lights are ordinarily tube-shaped. Curving them into a bulb shape creates reflective losses, i.e. light that shines from one part of the tube gets deflected by a nearby spiral.

Through a lot of trial and error, he came up with a way to space the spirals far enough apart to minimize losses without also losing a bulb-like shape. Many manufacturers have tried different designs, but the shape Hammer coined remains dominant.
