Gun Hill is founded by Dave Lopez and Kieran Farrel. Chris Sheehan, formerly the head brewer at Manhattan’s Chelsea Brewing Company, is the brewmaster. BeerUnion got in touch with Lopez to see how things are going and what the new brewery’s focus will be. *** and *** Why did you choose to open a brewery in the Bronx? We chose to open a brewery in the Bronx because Kieran and I have strong ties to the area, and when we began this whole process, there was no brick and mortar brewery in the borough. Kieran was born in the Bronx and lived in the borough for a little over 10 years, including college at Manhattan College. I went to school in the Bronx from Kindergarten through 12th grade. jHQ: FACULTY AND STUDENT
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: JANUARY 2014 2014-Jan-23 http://manhattan.edu/news/faculty-and-student-accomplishments-january-2014 Manhattan Monthly FACULTY AND STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS: JANUARY 2014 View all the recent accomplishments and accolades of Manhattan College’s faculty and students. School of Arts Cory Blad, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology, and the students who participated in the 2013 January Scandinavia program received a personal Christmas card from Jon Gnarr, the Mayor of Reykjavik, whom they met last January while studying in Reykjavik, the capital and largest city of Iceland. Dr. Blad is moderating a program there again this month along with Kelly Marin, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, and 18 students. Nancy Cave, coordinator of the study abroad program, was quoted in A Student Guide to Study Abroad written by Stacie Nevadomski Berdan, Allan Goodman and Sir Cyril Taylor, and published by world leaders in study abroad, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS). “The application process for studying abroad can seem daunting. Students should not underestimate how much time is needed to complete the application process. My observation over the years has been that students who start planning in their freshman year for a semester abroad in their junior year find the process to be less stressful and not so overwhelming,” Cave says. Psychology major Mary Kate Kelly ’15 is the seventh recipient of an award from the Kate Anne McNeil Study Abroad Scholarship Fund. The McNeil family and friends established this scholarship to memorialize Kate’s life, which was cut short on St. Patrick’s Day 2010. Kate studied abroad in fall 2009 and had a wonderful experience. This scholarship is meant to help other students take advantage of the many historical and cultural opportunities abroad. The Manhattan College Holocaust, Genocide and Interfaith Education Center (HGI) and Manhattan College students received several awards from city, state and the Riverdale Jewish Relations for their work on the Beis Menachem of Parkchester Synagogue in the Al-Imaan Mosque project in the East Bronx. Jack Consiglio ’16 and Mehnaz Afridi, Ph.D., director of the HGI Center, attended a legislative breakfast to receive five awards on October 20, 2013. Afridi was featured in “Jews and Muslims: So Far, So Close,” a documentary film by director Karim Miske. The film aired in France in October 2013. She also had several public speaking engagments in November 2013: A lecture on “Anti-Semitism and the Rippling Effects of Nazi Propaganda” at Drew University. The annual Holocaust lecture hosted by Florida International University at the Jewish Museum, Miami, entitled, “Shoah through Muslim Eyes.” A community talk on “Muslims and the relationship with others” at the Islamic Istanbul Cultural Center, Miami. Matthew Muehlbauer, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of history, co-authored Ways of War: American Military History from the Colonial Era to the Twenty-First Century (Routledge), which was released in December 2013. It is currently available on Routledge.com and T&F eBookStore. School of Engineering Anirban De, Ph.D., P.E., associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, presented a lecture, “Modeling the effects of surface blast on underground structures with or without protective barriers” at the 93rd annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), held in Washington, D.C., in January 2014. The lecture is based on a paper he published in the conference compendium with coauthors Alberto Morgante (CEEN Class of 2013) and professor Thomas F. Zimmie (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). ENDNOTE: The Nuns and the President2014-Jan-25Obama Mugs the Little Sisters of the Poor – LewRockwell.com http://www.lewrockwell.com/2014/01/andrew-p-napolit… The Nuns and the President By Andrew P. Napolitano January 16, 2014 *** begin quote *** What is wrong with Obama that he would employ lawyers to do this? For starters, he does not believe in natural rights. He accepts the perverse view — known as positivism — that our rights come not from God, but from the government. This is not an academic argument, as, in the president’s world, if the government is the source of freedom, then the government can restrict it. This is, of course, the opposite view from that of Judeo-Christian values, the Framers, the Constitution and American law; thus it violates the oath of office the president took. But just as troubling as his attitude about the origin of personal freedoms is the president’s attitude about the exercise of personal freedoms. Throughout his presidency, he has taken the position that he, and he alone, possesses the power to dispense with the obligations of federal laws when they are too burdensome and even to ignore them. He has bombed other countries without congressional approval, spied on all Americans without lawful warrants specifying any of them, enforced environmental regulations that Congress declined to enact, and declined to enforce or delayed the onset of sections of Obamacare that offend his friends. He has done this for political reasons when his colleagues and supporters have asked it of him. So, what about the nuns? Nuns who own no personal property, nuns who spend their lives ministering to the poor, nuns who will never have the need for contraceptive or sterilization or abortion services, nuns not involved in politics but deeply committed to well-formed consciences? Can he give them a break, too? In a word: No. His Department of (political) Justice has vigorously resisted the nuns and even mocked them. It has demanded that they assert in writing what their religious beliefs are and that they permit others to pay for the contraceptive, sterilization and abortion services they do not want, cannot use and profoundly condemn. *** end quote *** When before I asserted that there was more of a “war against religion, Catholics, morality, and liberty” than a “war” on anything else, I was ridiculed. Anyone care to recant that skepticism? This is a national disaster. # - # - # - # - # |
