POSITRACTION:
Two young women in 1916 are examples of courage

Annals of Adventure
Roughing It
What two young women found in the Rockies.
by Dorothy Wickenden April 20, 2009
*** begin quote ***
In 1916, a pair of 29-year-old women, bored with their lives
in Upstate New York, took teaching jobs in a remote area of
the Rocky Mountains. This is what they found.
Late on the evening of July 27, 1916, after a five-day
journey culminating in a twelve-hour train ride across the
Continental Divide, Rosamond Underwood and Dorothy Woodruff
arrived at the depot in Hayden, Colorado. They had been
hired to teach at the new school in Elkhead, in the
mountains seventeen miles north of town. The two women, who
were fleeing privileged but unfulfilling lives in the East,
had got on the train in Denver. They regarded it, Dorothy
said, as “something of a joke,” with its halting progress
and periodic breakdowns, but by the end of the journey they
were awed by the engineering feat that the rail line
represented: it was the highest ever built in North America.
They spent the long hours on the observation platform and in
the parlor car, preparing for their classes and talking with
other passengers. When they finally got to Hayden, they saw
that the depot consisted of a single boxcar. The train door
opened, and they were greeted by their employer, Farrington
Carpenter—a young cattle rancher, Hayden’s first attorney,
and the man who was largely responsible for the existence of
the school.
*** end quote ***
Imagine the huevos muchos grande for two women to do this?
By comparison, our “forefathers”, and “foremothers”, were
much more courageous than this generation.
My idea of taking a risk is eat at White Castle as opposed
to McDonalds.
The most daring thing I’ve done is to drive in the DC metro
traffic.
My paternal grandmother traveled the Oregon Trail in a
Conestoga wagon as a young teen age bride. By comparison,
I’m a wimp.
Next time, I’m faced with what I consider a tough choice,
I’ll think ‘what would those two ladies do’.
And, maybe my huevos muchos pequeño will match the
challenge.
I’m sure my fellow alums do much better.

My Approach…
“Buying or selling a home is a big deal in New York. A BIG
DEAL. It's complex, high-energy, potentially confusing and
at times very taxing. Guiding my clients through this
process is a big responsibility – one that involves a great
deal of honesty, trust, discretion and a willingness to go
the extra mile.”
About Bill…
With many millions of dollars in gross sales under his belt,
several top sales awards as well a nomination for the REBNY
Deal of the Year Award, Bill’s focus is customer-oriented
and strives to treat every client with the support and
integrity of a family member. He recognizes the fact that
buying and selling a home is personal and emotional, and is
likely one of the largest financial transactions in the
lives of his clients. Listening is his greatest skill,
because every individual needs a broker that is sensitive to
their needs.
Buyers and sellers alike enjoy Bill’s personal and humorous
yet practical and dedicated style. Born in Manhattan – one
of the few – he has traveled to Europe and China, and
understands the unique and multi-cultural needs of a city
like New York. This experience gives him perspective and
expertise in working with overseas buyers as well as
appreciating those at home. He treats every seller's and
buyer's real estate transaction like its own unique
individual “project”, yet makes sure each and every client
feels valued.
His background is diverse. A graduate of Manhattan College
and with two engineering degrees, Bill managed several large
construction projects in New York and worked on the very
high profile Hudson River PCBs Project in the Superfund
Program for the USEPA. An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, he
studies martial arts, played rugby for many years in New
York, and ran the NYC Marathon. In his spare time, he enjoys
spending time with his girlfriend and cat, in that order, as
well as gardening and attempting to grow pumpkins.

ENDNOTE: US
drone program's hidden casualties
2014-Jan-11
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/29/drones-us-military
I worked on the US drone program. The public should know
what really goes on
Few of the politicians who so brazenly proclaim the benefits
of drones have a real clue how it actually works (and
doesn't)

But here's the thing: I may not have been on the ground in
Afghanistan, but I watched parts of the conflict in great
detail on a screen for days on end. I know the feeling you
experience when you see someone die. Horrifying barely
covers it. And when you are exposed to it over and over
again it becomes like a small video, embedded in your head,
forever on repeat, causing psychological pain and suffering
that many people will hopefully never experience. UAV troops
are victim to not only the haunting memories of this work
that they carry with them, but also the guilt of always
being a little unsure of how accurate their confirmations of
weapons or identification of hostile individuals were.
Of course, we are trained to not experience these feelings,
and we fight it, and become bitter. Some troops seek help in
mental health clinics provided by the military, but we are
limited on who we can talk to and where, because of the
secrecy of our missions. I find it interesting that the
suicide statistics in this career field aren't reported, nor
are the data on how many troops working in UAV positions are
heavily medicated for depression, sleep disorders and
anxiety.
Recently, the Guardian ran a commentary by Britain's
secretary of state for defence, Philip Hammond. I wish I
could talk to him about the two friends and colleagues I
lost, within a year of leaving the military, to suicide. I
am sure he has not been notified of that little bit of the
secret UAV program, or he would surely take a closer look at
the full scope of the program before defending it again.

It’s not a video game.
And, murder is wrong.
It’s hard coded in all good human beings.
