POSITRACTION: So tell me, you think you have problems?

http://www.bornjustright.com/

“But It’s So Hard, Mommy”
by Jen Lee Reeves on November 26, 2013

*** begin quote ***

For almost all eight years I’ve written this blog, I’ve focused on Jordan’s health. Everything I do is focused on making sure she is strong mentally and physically. That’s why we’ve made a glorious return to occupational therapy to prevent periodic shoulder pain. Our recent appointments have shown Jordan’s left shoulder blade is weak and it could be to blame for some of her recent clavicle pain. Her shoulder also has some slight separation as well.

*** and ***

As we drove away, I asked Jordan if she understood why we go to occupational therapy. She said she didn’t know, even though we talked about it a few weeks ago. So I told her about limb different teenagers and adults I’ve met who have chronic pain. Others I know who deal with pain if they don’t exercise often enough. I explained to Jordan that my goal as her mom is to help her learn ways to stay strong and do whatever we can to prevent her from hurting a lot. A little bit of work can stop a lot of hurt when she’s older.

“But it’s so hard, Mommy.”

Oh, my heart. I know, Baby. I reminded Jordan how a year ago, she couldn’t even run a couple of blocks with me. But we’ve worked and worked and she ran a whole mile without stopping with me last week. It took effort and hard work, but it got easier. I promised her that it will get easier.

*** end quote ***

Read stories like this enough and you might wish for things to be different.

Then you read about Laue, Kevin [MC2012] and wonder if what we see as “minus” is really a “plus”?

I’ll think of this little girl when I think I have problems.

JOBIT: Lindgren, Donald Carl [MC1957 RIP]

2013-Dec-01

Donald Carl Lindgren
Obituary

Lindgren, Donald Carl

Donald Carl Lindgren of Briarcliff Manor, New York passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on November 26, 2013 following a courageous yearlong battle with brain cancer. He was seventy-eight.

Don was born on May 20, 1935 in New York to the late Richard and Ida (Thal) Lindgren. He was raised in Yonkers, attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, and received a B.A. from Manhattan College in 1957 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. Don served in the United States Army Reserve stationed at Fort Dix.

Don began his life-long career as a Certified Public Accountant (AICPA, NYSCPA) in New York City at Arthur Young & Company. He was then Director of Finance and Administration for the Corporate Systems and Communications Group at American Express Company, and later Treasurer at Buck Consultants.

Given a strong interest in engineering, a career high point for Don was serving as Executive Director of Finance and Administration at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (aka I.M. Pei & Partners) during the extension and modernization of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France which culminated with the opening of I.M. Pei's Glass Pyramid in 1989. He later accepted the position of Director of Finance and Administration with Watson Wyatt & Company. After his retirement in the late 1990's, Don continued to work as a finance and administration consultant on numerous projects.

Don was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was always supportive of his children's activities including camping and canoeing with Boy Scout Troop 394 in Briarcliff, and cheering his daughter ringside at horse shows. He was an avid gardener, zealous fan of the N.Y. Giants, and loved to walk on the Rockefeller trails with his wife of 53 years and their dogs.

Don is survived by his wife Janet (Kennedy) of Briarcliff Manor, his son Don and his wife Samantha, his daughter Catherine and her husband Fred Flores, his granddaughters Emma and Maya Flores, his brother Robert Lindgren, his sister-in-law Jean Kennedy, brother-in-law John Kennedy and his wife Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews. His brothers Richard, ODC and Thomas predeceased him.

In accordance with Don's wishes, the Funeral Mass in his memory was private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Don's memory to the Briarcliff Manor Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Corps, 1111 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) finds a fairer filter for the Pope's words

2013-Dec-01

Dear Jasper John,

Following below are a pertinent cartoon and article "filtered" by the Wall Street Journal.
The NYT article was completely truthful in its transmission of the Pope's manifesto.
I find that Pope agrees with my economic philosophy in virtually every way.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins

Permit me to quote from your cited article:

"Benedict seemed to aim his critique at state and market alike, whereas Francis seems to move the ball considerably in the direction of the idea that the market has far more power—the power to do good for humanity as well as to dehumanize—than the state," said Chad Pecknold, assistant professor of theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington."

I’d suggest that we as a society of individuals can do more. And, that the State (aka the King) hurts everyone especially the poor. And, the market isn’t free (quoting JFK) “a rising tide raises all boats”.

Perhaps that’s worth considering?

We’ll see how the words translate into actions by the faithful and others.

If the Gooferment was less of a “participant” and more of a “referee”, then we’d be better off. All too often, we see it as immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. I saw first hand how Gooferment “welfare” in NJ trapped people inextricably in poverty. And the politicians and bureaucrats were perfectly happy to have a “plantation” full of Clients to justify their efforts. Homefront NJ was actively opposed and interfered with as they gave those people “a ladder” to climb out. Just handing out “benefits” does not get them out of “poverty”.

Argh!

Welcome Back, Mr. Augustine

New psychology teacher, Craig Augustine, comes back to teach at Citrus High School after attending here as a student from 2004-2008.

After graduating from Manhattan College, majoring in history and minoring in psychology, Augustine taught at Foxlane High School in Bedford New York for two years. Then he came to teach here at Citrus High School, after spending his own high school years here. “It was awkward [to come back and teach here] at first,” he said. “It’s nice, though because it’s familiar. You know people and you understand your surroundings.”

“I really like teaching psychology because it’s relatable. Kids can usually understand what’s happening,” Augustine said. A few weeks ago, his students did social experiments that consisted of doing things that many people wouldn’t normally do in public, such as walking backwards and singing in public places. The conclusion was that they are not really odd at all unless we make them that way. “It’s all about having different perspectives on life.” he says.

The best part about this year so far for him is working with the students. “They are really great students. I love my classes,” Augustine said.

TRAILBLAZING WOMEN REMEMBER TRANSFORMATIVE MOMENTS AT MANHATTAN COLLEGE

*** begin quote ***

Members of the College community gathered to celebrate 40 years of coeducation at Manhattan with a special panel presentation.

Coed PanelWhen Patricia Ruback-Kehrberger ’69 was admitted to Manhattan’s engineering program, it didn’t come in the form of a letter — rather a firm handshake — because until 40 years ago, women weren’t formally admitted at all.

“Imagine the men who were here expecting that they were at a men’s school and all of the sudden they look and there, in their calculus class, is me,” Ruback-Kehrberger said on Nov. 20, of being the first woman engineering major at Manhattan College. During the special panel presentation celebrating 40 years of coeducation, she and other alumnae discussed how their trailblazing college years impacted their lives personally and professionally.

*** and ***

“Manhattan served me well,” Cunniffe says, of her degree in marketing and computer information systems and its impact on her future career. She never would have considered taking computer classes in the School of Business if it hadn’t been for the Brothers’ encouragement.

“[Brother Anthony Flynn] believed in me, my abilities, [and] got me that student job in the computer lab,” Cunniffe continued. “All of the sudden I was doing [work with] computers where I never thought I had the aptitude and I actually liked it … I think what Manhattan taught me was to be open to anything, to keep showing up and to keep going forward and leading the pack.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: I hate to break it to Jasper Cunniffe, (who I know), but all due deference to Brother Flynn, he was seeking “cheap labor”. He came to Manhattan Prep and pursuasively argued that if we gave up our summer, passed the CDC class, he’d hire us in the datacenter at SIX dollars an hour. (Minimum wage was 4.25) Like the guy selling the Brooklyn Bridge, he made it sound that we were getting the inside track on “wealth”. My Mom’s answer was: “Yes you can do it, but get a night job.” And, I was stupid enough to do it. Talk about brining the candle at three ends — yes, the middle is an end if you work hard enuf — it was very hard to keep up my social life. Brother Flynnn deserves substantial time in Purgetory for lying to little kids. Laff, but, like my time in the military, wouldn’t trade it for anything.]

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has another request

2013-Dec-04

Good Morning All,

Ann Burke has asked for our prayers for her Sister, Ronnie, in Dallas. Ronnie has been in our prayers before as she was being treated for a Bacterial Lung infection called "MAC." The Drugs are not working and she is scheduled for surgery next Thursday. The Surgeons will remove significant parts of her Lung. We know it is serious surgery. We pray that a less invasive procedure that is available can be used but most important, we pray that the surgery will arrest the Bacteria. Please raise the volume.

You may recall that a few years ago we had Ronnie's Daughter, Jackie, in our prayers with some serious health issues. Jackie is wonderfully well now. She sings ( The Children's Chorus Of Greater Dallas). Jackie is in the second highest of the 5 Choruses and she is just 11 years old. She also plays the Piano. She has been one of my favorite Divas since she was seven.

Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) cites need for Egan, Pat [MC1957]

2013-Dec-06

Good Evening All,

Bob Fink, Atlanta, Georgia asks for our prayers for a friend and Classmate, Pat Egan '57 BBA. Pat also lives in Atlanta and is a member along with Bob of the same Parish. Bob tells us Pat devotes a great deal of time serving the Parish. He is a true Servant of the Lord. Pat has attended the Annual Breakfast of Jaspers of Georgia for the past 20 years.

Pat has had surgery to remove a lung and now will receive radiation treatment. As Bob says, we pray that Pat may be comforted and strengthened. Please raise the volume for our fellow Jasper as we pray that all goes as Pat and his family wish and that his recovery is steady and complete. Thank you. God Bless.

Phil Colon

ENDNOTE: “Willful blindness” requires Whistleblowers

Why We All Should Be Whistleblowers
By Russ Baker on Nov 30, 2013

*** begin quote ***

A town with a mortality rate 80 times higher than elsewhere—and the willful blindness of the locals, except for one person.

The truth about whistle-blowers—and why they do what they do. Turns out they’re not crazy; the rest of us are.

A video talk on taking our freedom and doing something with it.

*** end quote ***

15 minutes on “willful blindness”.

The priestly child abuse is cited as one of many many examples.

A wake up call to action in all the things we are afraid to call out or think can’t change.
