POSITRACTION: Greater love hath no man then he risk his life for another

A salute to Huck’s Hero Alex Mitchell of Ozone Park, New York. He drives a gasoline tanker truck. Around 2 a.m. Friday morning, he stopped by a burning SUV crashed on the side of the Long Island Expressway. Alex pulled over, ran to the burning wreck, and pulled the intoxicate driver out from under it, just before the flames reached him and the tires exploded. Alex saved the driver with one hand while dialing 911 with the other. And as soon as he’d talked to police, he jumped back in his truck to finish his shift. Alex called it “business as usual.” He still had another 12 hours to go. Good for you, Alex. But remember, even Superman takes a coffee break now and again.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) "People who oppose universal health care"

Dear Jasper John,

You say shame on me and others who want a decent health care system based on the teachings of Jesus
Christ and other spiritual leaders. It is people who oppose us who act shamefully - I often think that those who oppose the Affordable care Act and other plans for guaranteeing health care as a human right are the ones who are shameless. They see suffering that could be prevented and make up some excuse or other why we should not act as a society and do everything we can to prevent the suffering.

People who oppose universal health care are not in any position to cast shame on others!!

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

# - # - #

Dear fellow Jasper Stebbins:

The expression is not the way you are taking it. It’s about not making the same mistake twice.

We can quibble about WWJD and “health", "health care", "health care insurance", or something else.

Also, I object to “want a decent health care system”! Every one wants that; no defines it.

I think the idea that “guaranteed health care as a human right” is a very bad concept.

I am not saying that I don’t want sick people to be taken care of.

You have to understand that when you create a POSITIVE right, you also create an affirmative BURDEN on someone. Guarantee a visit to a doctor and you obligate some doctor to provide that service. You’ve made that doctor a SLAVE.

There is no such thing as a “society”, there are only individuals.

I would prefer to the Parable of the Good Samaritan. He took the victim to the inn, guaranteed payment, and didn’t ask the government to reimburse him.

So too, we, as individuals, should be so charitable. If the Gooferment did NOT steal so much of our personal wealth and waste it, then we could be even more charitable. Not to subsidize bad behavior, but to succor the truly needy. Gooferment welfare creates a permanent welfare dependent class with no hope and humanity has lost whatever they could have produced.

“Universal health care” is an oxymoron.

The Gooferment is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. The estimates of fraud, waste, and administrative overhead are staggering.

Thinking that one size can fit all takes a very unique personal human condition is a bad paradigm and / or meme.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has several requests

Good Afternoon All,

I ask for your prayers for Scott's Father-In-Law and our good friend, who this past Thursday underwent abdominal Surgery to reverse earlier surgery after the removal of part of his Intestine. Clive is experiencing pain and discomfort but it would seem that that was expected. We hope he will be home soon and able to share Melissa's Birthday (my Daughter-In-Law and his Daughter) on November 14th. Thank you. God Bless.

Good Evening All,

Tomorrow, November 12, 2013 is the Birthday of our littlest Jasper, Luke, who is always in our prayers but on this so special occasion, I ask you to raise the volume in thanksgiving and love for this little fighter. He gives new meaning to the words Never Give Up and of course that beautiful smile that lights up a room is a testament to his spirit. We congratulate Lukie and give thanks to his Parents, Peter and Heidi for sharing his life with us. His grandparents, George and Ann are so much a part of this sharing that they too should be thanked. We pray that Lukie continues to grow and improve . Lukie, you may not be able to read this but your Mom and Dad will read and explain it too you in that wonderfully patient way that tells you how much you are loved and cherished. thank you for being a part of our lives. God Bless and always watch over you. Happy 6th Birthday.

Good Morning All,

We ask you for your prayers for all sorts of reasons. This next request is one of the most difficult but your prayers will help. Joe Quinn asks for our prayers for a young couple who lost their Daughter just a few days after she was born. This is a very difficult time for these loving Parents and their family. We pray that they find peace in the sure knowledge that their child was called and is in God's embrace. It is difficult to understand why this happens but raise your voices and open your hearts in support of these devastated Parents. Thank you. God Bless.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) about "any means"

Dear Jasper John,

I suppose you will have some way of blaming the "gooferment" for this atrocious behavior by
unscrupulous "capitalists" Shame on them!! It is all too typical for rightists to use any means
to fatten their coffers.. Why do you defend these characters worthy of complete condemnation?

Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

No Health Insurance? Just Drink.

This is the strangest P.R. campaign yet against the Affordable Care Act. Generation Opportunity, the Koch-funded group behind the Creepy Uncle Sam ads, is throwing tailgate parties to “educate” undergraduates about the exchanges. Read: To convince young people to forgo health insurance.

The group’s communication director, David Pasch, wrote an email to The Tampa Bay Times describing a drunken event at Saturday’s University of Miami-Virginia Tech football game:

“We rolled in with a fleet of Hummers, F-150’s and Suburbans, each vehicle equipped with an 8’ high balloon bouquet floating overhead. We hired a popular student DJ from UMiami (DJ Joey), set up OptOut cornhole sets, beer pong tables, bought 75 pizzas, and hired 8 ‘brand ambassadors’ aka models with bullhorns to help out.”

Mr. Pasch specified that “student activists,” rather than anyone employed directly by Generation Opportunity, “brought (lots of) beer and liquor for consumption by those 21 and over.”

As a sort of afterthought, he added, “Oh yeah, and we educated students about their healthcare options outside the expensive and creepy Obamacare exchanges.”

According to Think Progress, this isn’t a one-time thing: “The group is touring 20 different campuses this fall in a $750,000 effort to convince college students that they’re better off being uninsured than getting health coverage through Obamacare.”

That’s a lot of money for a campaign that’s not only insanely irresponsible, but also insanely dumb. Generation Opportunity is the old guy at a house party, convinced he can win the cool kids’ respect with booze.

# - # - # - # - #

JR: Well, it’s not how I’d spend 750K$. And, I doubt that it really changed any minds. Twenty campuses! Not exactly a “nation-wide” effort. Everyone was free to do what they pleased. I really from my little L libertarian pov have no problem with it. As long as no one was hurt or defrauded. Everyone is free to do what they choose.

I will turn this slightly around in that the Gooferment is spending money, stolen from the taxpayers, to influence them that Obamacare is good.  And KS strong arming insurance companies to pay to publicize it and, when things are going badly, to rep their mouths shut is also using force. I don’t see you posting any links condemning that behavior.

I must compliment you on the quotes around capitalist. I have a real problem with “crony capitalism” that partners with the Gooferment to extract wealth by force or fraud. It’s not capitalism where the person risks their own money in hopes of receiving “certificates of appreciation” (What you’d call money) from their Customers for goods and services rendered. What we have today is more akin to fascism than a free market.

Always glad for your participation.

*** and ***

Dear neighbors: In order to be an active participant in our state legislative process I am running as a District 16 Republican candidate representing East Kingston, Kensington and South Hampton. I have served the community as a past member of the East Kingston Planning Board for three years and Recreation Department baseball coach for three years. For the past five years I have been serving as a member of the East Kingston Elementary School Board and I am currently in my third term as the School Board chairman.

During my tenure on the School Board, we have used a zero-based budgeting process — an effort that has resulted in school budgets below state formulated default levels, while, providing an excellent learning environment at the lowest cost per student in SAU 16. I am also a member of SAU16 Joint Board and past-chairman of the Compensation Committee. As Compensation Committee chairman, the committee focused on the spiraling cost of health and liability insurance and was able to reduce costs in both of those critical areas.

The savings that we were able to achieve were shared by all the towns in SAU 16 including East Kingston and Kensington. As a legislator I will support legislation in the following areas: Business growth for job creation; producing fiscally conservative budgets; and excellence in the New Hampshire educational system. My wife Morna and I have been married for 28 years and have lived in East Kingston where we raised our three children Amanda, 25, Elizabeth 23, and Gregory, 19, for 18 years. I graduated from Manhattan College in 1977 where I earned a degree in electrical engineering and have been employed by Osram Sylvania for 28 years in a variety of capacities, including my current position in the vertical markets sales group.

Please participate in our electoral process by marking Sept. 11 on your paper and electronic calendars and vote in the New Hampshire Primary. On Primary Day I would appreciate your support for my Republican candidacy for District 16 state representative. I welcome your input or questions; I can be reached by … …

In Memory of

He is survived by his wife Stella, his children John Joe, Jennifer and Kim, grandchildren Camryn, Kendall, Eliza and Jack, brothers Dennis and Bob, sister Pat and an enormous loving group of cousins, nieces, nephews, sons-in-laws, a daughter in-law and a very best friend. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. "Mike and Bill are experts in their regulatory fields, and their consistent good judgment and strong leadership will enhance FINRA's ability to protect investors and ensure market integrity. Their vast regulatory experience and leadership in the evolution of our exam programs over the years will allow them to guide the sales practice and financial operational programs as they continue to evolve into more risk-focused, effective and efficient programs," said Susan Axelrod.

Rufino began his career with the NYSE in 1988 and led the Sales Practice Regulatory Unit prior to the NYSE's merger with FINRA in 2007. FINRA's Sales Practice program encompasses FINRA's 15 district offices and is responsible for ongoing surveillance and examinations, both routine and investigative, of FINRA-regulated securities firms across the country. Mr. Rufino graduated magna cum laude from Iona College with a degree in finance. In addition, he received his M.B.A. with honors in management information systems from Iona.

Wollman joined the NYSE in 1989, and in 2001 was appointed to lead one of the financial oversight departments that examined NYSE members for compliance with financial and operational rules. Earlier this year, he was appointed as the Deputy in Member Regulation – ROOR. ROOR is responsible for the ongoing surveillance and annual examinations of firms for financial and operational compliance. Wollman earned his bachelor's degree from Manhattan College with a degree in finance.

FINRA is the largest independent regulator for all securities firms doing business in the United States. FINRA is dedicated to investor protection and market integrity through effective and efficient regulation and complementary compliance and technology-based services. FINRA touches virtually every aspect of the securities business – from registering and educating all industry participants to examining securities firms, writing rules, enforcing those rules and the federal securities laws, informing and educating the investing public, providing trade reporting and other industry utilities, and administering the largest dispute resolution forum for investors and firms. JHQ: What Does Lasallian Mean?

Published on Nov 14, 2013

Manhattan College's Lasallian heritage is derived from a Catholic teaching order established by Saint John Baptist de La Salle in 17th century France. Today, this translates into five important values that our campus community puts into practice: faith in the presence of God, an inclusive community, concern for the poor and social justice, respect for all people and quality education.

[JR: My usual nag inserted here. May I suggest that you have your own domain? The common wisdom, or is that common whizdumb, is to own your own name as a domain name. I own "reinke.cc". (I like saying "sea sea me at reinke.cc"! me@reinke.cc will actually work!) I gives one quite a bit of control. And, it's very cheap. I know three solutions at 25$/year using wordpressdotcom with gmail, 30$/year email only with 1and1, and 90$/year for domain+email+webspace also at 1and1. My point is not that you should use 1and1. http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 I could care less which one you use. It's that getting on to your own domain with email is cheap and easy. And, it's not hotmail, yahoo, or gmail. It IS your own “personal brand". Do NOT let the ISPs hold your emails address hostage. You can NEVER be assured that anyone who has your email from someone else (i.e., headhunter) will know your new address! ]

Within minutes of publishing her story on Chive’s website, thousands had been raised.

– Click here to donate to Melissa’s cause –

“When we started the reading the day the story went live, Chive told me to go to the GoFundMe site and I had like 40 people around me and I was thinking to myself, ‘Obviously we just finished reading, no one could have donated yet!,’” Smith said. “But it was almost to 10k when we shifted to that page!”

“I cried,” she continued. “I was so shocked. I never imagined I could touch so many people.”

And the money kept rolling in.

To date, nearly $400,000 has been donated to Smith’s cause.

“I am so thankful and feel so blessed, so lucky, so loved and so honored that they chose me and believe in me so much,” she said. “That’s what means so much to me, everyone has so much faith in me and its helping me find a little more faith In myself that I lost a little bit the last 18 months or so.”
