In a 2:22 minute video, we see “stewardship”. Give them a lot of credit. It’s probably expensive. But considering all that humans waste, it’s a small price.

Not every “rescue” is as dramatic, caring, or unusual.

But every little bit makes a difference. If for no other reason than it changes our thinking.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) cites NYT article why we 'need' Obamacare

2013-Nov-03

Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) submitted without comment:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/03/opinion/sunday/kristof-this-is-why-we-need-obamacare.html?hp&rref=opinion&_r=0

# - # - #

[JR: I would expect better of the New York Times and Jasper Stebbins. This type of “argument” would have never flew when I was up on the hill taking those “liberal arts” courses. Taking one anecdotal case as an argument for a massive overhaul of the best system of “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else in the world. Shame on us. Let’s focus on one key passage!  ]

Op-Ed Columnist
This Is Why We Need Obamacare
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: November 2, 2013

*** begin quote ***

No, far more serious is the kind of catastrophe facing people like Richard Streeter, 47, a truck driver and recreational vehicle repairman in Eugene, Ore. His problem isn’t Obamacare, but a tumor in his colon that may kill him because Obamacare didn’t come quite soon enough.

Streeter had health insurance for decades, but beginning in 2008 his employer no longer offered it as an option. He says he tried to buy individual health insurance but, as a lifelong smoker in his late 40s, couldn’t find anything affordable — so he took a terrible chance and did without.

*** end quote ***

First, let’s call everyone’s attention to the reason for “employer based health insurance”.

You don’t buy “car insurance” that way. Nor “homeowners”, “rental”, “flood”, “umbrella”, “flood”, “catastrophic”, “business”, “liability”, “directors”, “prize”, … … did I miss any? Why is that?

Gooferment World War Two wage and price controls.

Business, blocked from paying the wages need to attract the skills needed, came up with this scam to solve the problem.

In what reality, does losing your job and losing your health care make sense. Tax-wise for the employee it’s even a bigger joke. The employer can deduct it, but if you buy your own you can’t.

So the anecdotal case is setup by Gooferment stupidity and the author argues for more Gooferment stupidity to “fix” it.

Second, let’s look at the anecdotal case advanced as the argument for more Gooferment stupidity.

Smoker, who relied on his employer for “health insurance”, when forced to get his own, does NOT.

Note now the story ADMITS he took a chance when he could find it AT A PRICE HE WAS WILLING TO PAY. Very cagy use of the word “affordable”!

So did try to mitigate his risks? Stop smoking, go for regular care, … what were his habits and choices when he had the insurance from his employer.

NOW, I feel sad that he took a chance and it came up snake eyes for him.

The bright spot — according to the article — is he has NOW transferred the costs of his choices to the taxpayers. And, everyone gets worse “health”, “health care”, “health care insurance”, or something else to adopt this socialist meme.

Sorry, but this article is an indictment of Gooferment!

Further, I can NOT imagine if he showed up at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene Oregon, that he would not have been cared for promptly and efficiently. (Yeah, I spent the first few years of my life in Oregon!)

All hospitals have a “charity care” account.

So, the President, the politicians, and bureaucrats have lied through their smiles to get us on the path to be a European Socialist nation. And, we are supposed to spend ourselves broke to try to make up for the bad choices of others?

Shame. Shame on them, the NYT, and the liberal socialists for being deceitful.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Argh!

JFOUND: McShane, Emily [MC????] performs with Girsa

2013-Nov-03

http://www.girsamusic.com/

Welcome home to Girsa Traditional Irish Music

Girsa has captured the hearts of audiences everywhere with their melodious voices, electrifying musicianship and witty banter. Their energetic and enthusiastic performances of Traditional Irish music, song and dance have been met with outstanding acclaim. Maeve, Deirdre, Blaithin, Bernadette, Pamela and Emily bring a creative mix of fiddle, accordion, banjo, tin whistle, bodhran, guitar and piano to their shows. Their individual instrumental and vocal excellence combine to create a powerful force that is breaking into the forefront of Irish music in the US. Their first two CDs received rave reviews and their 3rd CD is currently in the works. There’s an exciting future ahead for Girsa.

*** and ***

Emily McShane is 21 years old, was born and raised in Pearl River New York, and is currently a student at Manhattan College studying Elementary/ Special Education and in the five year masters program of Special Education. She has been surrounded by music all her life. Along with her mother, who plays the fiddle, and all three of her sisters, Emily has grown up Irish dancing and playing music. Emily started playing the piano when she was about five years old, taking lessons with the fantastic Annmarie Acosta. Since she was very young, she spent many of her summers in Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland visiting her father’s side of the family and mother’s side in Galway. She has competed in the Fleadh Cheoils in both New York and Ireland for many years and has attended many sessions; her favorite being the Welcome In session in Forkhill, Co. Armagh. Placing third in the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil piano competition U15 is one of Emily’s most cherished moments. Singing has also always been a love and passion of Emily’s. More recently, Emily has learned to play the bodhran and guitar with Girsa, taking guitar lessons from the wonderful Mary Coogan of Cherish the Ladies. The Catskills Irish Arts Week is one that Emily has been attending since a young age, and is where she eventually learned to play the bodhran from different Irish artists. She has grown up listening to Irish music as well as country music, which is also a big part of her life. Emily has greatly been inspired by many artists such as Deirdre Connolly, Padraic O’Reilly, Luke Kelly, Deirdre Scanlon, Peter Murphy and country artists like Miranda Lambert and the Dixie Chicks. Girsa is a very big part of Emily’s life and she knows the memories made with Girsa are ones that will be cherished for years to come.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2013) -- In a desert full of fire artillery and a convoy of tanks, probably the last concept on anyone's mind is mathematics.

Yet, for Sergeant Kevin Singer, a chemical engineer at Picatinny Arsenal, mathematics is essential to his mission.

*** and **

SHARING A STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVE

Always interested in challenging work, Singer has been intrigued by mathematics since college.

After he earned his master's degree in chemical engineering from Manhattan College in New York City, he was employed by Picatinny's Reliability Management group in 2009.

The Reliability Management group is under the Armament, Research, Development, and Engineering Center. Still, it wasn't until he met Douglas Ray, in early 2011, that Singer joined Picatinny's Statistical Methods and Analysis Group.

The Statistical Methods and Analysis Group is part of the Quality Engineering and System Assurance Directorate.

The group consults with a variety of Integrated Product Teams and specializes in test-design and data analysis, and merges their statistical expertise and engineering background in the development and improvement of armaments and Warfighter systems.

http://nikitasays.com/2013/09/13/anticipating-autumn-and-an-announcement/

Anticipating Autumn (and an announcement!)

*** begin quote ***

Alright, I’ll stop beating around the bush. I visited my alma mater this past Tuesday and I miss college. I just do. I miss the campus, I miss being around my peers and professors, I miss my underclassmen friends, and I miss going someplace and having work to do everyday. In short, college gave my life structure and…purpose. I hate saying “purpose,” because my purpose in life is not to work in and of itself. I think you get the idea, though.

Today I had my first job interview since I graduated from college. Despite the staffing agencies, the online applications, and my use of job websites like Monster, this interview came about purely from in-person networking. My mom spoke with somebody who was related to someone else and that person interviewed me today. The interview actually went very well–but unfortunately, the company is a non-profit and it does not have any positions open at this time. I am still grateful that I had the experience, though.

Next week I plan on taking the 911-operator test. I never thought of myself as someone who could listen on the other end of a person’s emergency phone call, but it’s a city job and it has benefits.

And I’m running out of ideas, to be honest.

In the meantime, I’ll keep going down the list of companies and I’ll continue applying. And praying.

And wishing. And hoping. I might go back to the whole follow-up phone call thing, but chances are people won’t be very receptive. That’s what I’ve been experiencing lately–Human Resources does not want to hear your voice. You’re just another applicant to them. The squeaky wheel does not get the oil anymore.

Wait, this post is supposed to be about Autumn.

Okay, announcement time! Since I’m still unemployed, and I want to exercise my abilities as a writer and try new things, and since certain sections of this blog have been largely ignored, I will now implement a blogging schedule (*trumpet blast and confetti*)!

Now, just to be clear, there’s no bondage here. I’ve seen what stretching for content has done to other bloggers, and I don’t want that to happen to this blog (or to me). However, from now on, the schedule is as follows:

Sunday is Soul Sunday. This could potentially be a free day. You can’t force inspirational writing. If God lays something on my heart to write about, or if I learn a life lesson during the week, or if I feel like reflecting on something from the past and incorporating Bible verses, it will be posted on this day.

Monday is Music Monday. I love listening to music (who doesn’t?) and I’d like to share that love with you. Feel free to follow me on Spotify–I will follow back. And please send me some music on there. I love hearing new music!

Tuesday is Text & TV Tuesday. I will blog about either a book or a TV show. Or a poem. The possibilities are endless.

Wednesday is Web Wednesday. I will also use this as a free day if I have nothing on the internet to pundit about. I’m unsure if I’ll incorporate commentary about viral videos/memes here. That’s opening a whole other can of worms.

Thursday is Random Thursday. I’m specifically devoting this day to the “random” section of my blog, and I will be taking requests. When I say random, I mean random–frisbees, rubber ducks, the solar system–that kind of thing.

Rubber duckie, you’re the one…

Friday is Film Friday. Some of you might have seen the film blog I had during my college days. That blog was made specifically for the film classes I was taking. However, I would still love to talk about film here! I’d be a little less wordy, of course.

Saturday is Style Saturday. I’m going to mix it up by not just doing outfit of the day type stuff. I might talk about trends, or put an outfit together on Polyvore and post it here, or talk about one particular piece of clothing and how to wear it multiple ways. We’ll see!

So that leaves out one category…life. The reason I did this is because I can spontaneously post about life at any point during the week. It’s…life.

Let’s have a great Fall semester!

~Nikita

Please engage with me. I’d love to hear your suggestions for any of the categories–particularly the random ones.

Also: I want to start interacting and networking more with other bloggers, so I might write a blog inspired by or in response to another person’s blog, or I may simply post a pingback to it.

My name is Nicole. I’m 22 years old and I live in The Bronx, New York. I graduated from Manhattan College in the Class of 2013. Go Jaspers!

Anyway, this page is about me, I guess. Hm…I enjoy writing, reading, eating, singing, walking, sleeping, and watching movies. I fall in love with places. I believe everyone is here on purpose, for a purpose. I’m still looking for mine!

[JR: Sorry, but I find this frustrating. I know that Alma Mater has a good placement gang. And, there are the alumni. But this person doesn’t give anyone enough to help. Like those fishing stories, folks expect them to jump into the boat. Never worked that way for me. Argh! Depending upon what she is seeking, I’m sure she could should have something! Double argh! ]

Hi. I posted this blog entry a long time ago (well, relatively). Please clarify what you meant by “Like those fishing stories, folks expect them to jump into the boat. Never worked that way for me. Argh! Depending upon what she is seeking, I’m sure she could should have something! Double argh!” Thank you. Also, you already know me. ;)

JBLOGGER: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) recalls why Alma Mater matters imho

2013-Nov-07

*** begin quote ***

An important historical event took place on this date in 1918. The start of the Russian Revolution. The one between the White Bolsheviks and the Red one’s. A fellow by the name of Kerensky was a White Bolshevik and the first Presinet of free Russia following the Czar’s dethroning. Philosophical differences arose. Lenin was head of the Red group. Finally, the Reds beat the Whites. That is the war that started on this day in 1918.

Kerensky had to flee Russia. Flee or be killed. The choice was simple. He left. He eventually ended up in the United States.

Why the Russian history lesson? I was fortunate to have known Kerensky.

It was 1956-7. I was a senior at Manhattan College. A history major. One of my courses was Russian history from around 1880 to a couple of years following the Revolution. Kerensky taught the course. He was my/our professor. Imagine how exciting it was to hear from the lips of a man who not only lived during those years, but also was the important leader of one of the two revolutionary groups.

As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any manʼs death diminishes me". PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports sad news

2013-Nov-08

Good Evening,

Jim Smith asks for our prayers for his close friend and classmate, John Wexler '60. John died today in Richmond, Virginia. Please keep John, his Wife, Lee Ann and their family in your prayers as we pray for the repose of John's soul and that as John's family and friends mourn the loss of their loved one, that they find the Peace of Christ to bring them through this difficult time.

We have had Jim in our prayers this week as he had eye surgery. The first part of the procedure has gone well and we pray that the follow-up and healing continues to go as hoped for. Thank you. God Bless.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) about remembers Vets' day

2013-Nov-09

Good Morning All,

Monday, as we all know, is Veterans day. We owe so much to those who Serve, have Served and those who paid the ultimate price. This morning I came across something that Abraham Lincoln said, " In the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." Our Veterans through the years have signed that blank check to all of us to defend and protect. Life for our Servicemen and Women can be fulfilling, you forge bonds that you will never let friend or foe break, it can be lonely, it is sometimes daunting and terrifying. Scars may fade but don't go away, memories pale a little but never disappear. Our Veterans are truly heroes, they go in harms way, at the least they stand steadfast in their willingness to do so. They so often define what the United States stands for and are that beacon of liberty that we read about.

On this Veteran's Day, thank a Veteran in the moment, please keep them and their families in your prayers as we thank them for their sacrifice and remember what we may sometimes forget, " Freedom Is Not Free." Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: Keshia Thomas demonstrates what "free speech" is all about

2013-Nov-09

Mike Huckabee on FACEBOOK:

*** begin quote ***

A salute this evening to a true Huck’s Hero, Keshia Thomas. The BBC reports that she was just 18 back in 1996, and taking part in an anti-KKK rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The crowd spotted a white man in a Confederate flag shirt and started yelling, “Kill the Nazi!” They knocked him to the ground and began beating him. Keshia said it was barbaric. She knew what it was like to be attacked. So this black teenager threw herself over the alleged racist, shielding him from harm and shaming his attackers into backing off. Since then, the photo of her protecting him has inspired a lot of people to be kinder. The BBC tracked Keshia to Houston, where she now lives. She says she never saw that man again, but his son came to her once and thanked her. She still tries to do something to break down racial stereotypes every day. No grand gestures. She said sometime, "The biggest thing you can do is just be kind to another human being.” Keshia, sometimes that little act of kindness can be the grandest gesture of all.

*** end quote ***

When we say: “I hate what you say, but will defend with my life your right to say it”, we really have to mean it.

"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free"." --- President Andrew Shepherd played by Michael Douglas in "The American President" (1995)

Now this was a very left wing movie, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

I think this quote captures the essence of free speech.

And, Ms. Keshia Thomas has evidenced it.
