POSITRACTION: Canceled event not wasted

Atlanta Wedding Reception Donated To The Homeless

*** begin quote ***

Hosts of a cancelled wedding donated an elaborate reception to Atlanta’s homeless last Sunday.

Carol and Willie Fowler teamed up with Hosea Feed the Hungry, a local organization serving families in need, to turn the wedding-that-wasn’t into the first annual Fowler Family Celebration of Love, feeding 200 unexpected guests.

“We’re very pleased that she’s handling it so well,” Carol Fowler told Here & Now about her daughter. “She was also very delighted to see and know that others had an opportunity to enjoy something, rather than just allow it to go to waste.”

*** and ***

“Events are canceled, and sometimes for unknown reasons. Do no allow that opportunity to go to waste. Call up your favorite charity. Give them an opportunity to use that for people that will not have an opportunity, perhaps in life.”

 *** end quote ***

Wow, that's charity in action.

I wonder if cancellations like this could be bought from the canceller and donated.

Everyone would win.

The "Canceler" wouldn't lose everything. The "Buyer" could donate and take a deduction.

And, everyone wins.

Sort of like "event insurance"?

Good karma!

JFOUND: Rodriguez, Aldo [MC1986] returns to visit Malloy HS

http://thebeehive.molloyhs.org/?p=9148

The last time Aldo Rodriguez ’81 walked the halls of Molloy the Ralph DiChiaro Center for Arts and Sciences did not exist, there was no Captain Anthony Marsloe Gymnasium, and he was still the sports editor of The Stanner newspaper. Much has changed since then, and this became quite clear to Aldo, who returned to Molloy  for the first time in 32 years to visit old friend and fellow Stanner newspaper staffer Richard Karsten ’81. Karsten, now the President of their alma mater, was very happy to catch up with Aldo, whom he had been trying to locate for decades. Aldo recently came in contact with Karsten via LinkedIn, which led to an email and a lunch meeting at Molloy. The meeting also included classmate Ted Mcguinness ’81, who is a college guidance counselor at Molloy. Aldo was thrilled to return to Manton Street, and he marveled at the impressive changes around the school. “My first impression was ‘wow,’” said Aldo. “Between the new gym, the clean hallways, the trophy rooms, the library, the fact that the school is now coed…it’s a culture shock. These changes have raised the school’s standards. The library in particular, with all the refurbished furniture and new technology, is beautifully and tastefully done. Molloy is in the 21st century and will hopefully keep going strong.” Aldo also shared stories about his Molloy days, including when he was one of the very rare students who commuted from Westchester to Molloy full time during his senior year. “I timed it perfectly. I caught the 5:48 am train every day. I loved Molloy and the education I received there, so I went above and beyond to stay enrolled there after my family moved to Westchester.” After graduating from Molloy, Aldo went on to study mechanical engineering at Manhattan College. After earning his degree, Aldo found himself moving away from engineering, instead finding a career in transportation and warehousing. He remains in that industry today, and his love of technology continues to inspire his work on a daily basis.

1950 - 2013

David W. Bogart, age 63, died October 3, 2013, of complication of sarcoma. Son of John Milton Bogart and Ruth Whittaker Bogart. He was a loving husband for 16 years to Anne Gilbert Bogart and adoring father to two daughters from a previous marriage, Elizabeth Colleen Cassese (Bill) of Nanuet, New York, and Megan Vanessa Johnston (Douglas) of New City, New York, and a son, Jordon Alexander Bogart of Tappan, New York. He is also survived by a brother, Doug Bogart of Binghamton, New York, a sister Diane Bogart of Clarence Center, New York, and two grandchildren, 3-year-old Aidan Conner Johnston and 3-month-old Emma Christine Johnston, both of New City, New York.

Born on July 8, 1950 in Binghamton, New York, David graduated from the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. His grandmother was proud that David was the first college graduate of the family.

David was a respected engineer whose work as owner of David W. Bogart Associates took him to many countries around the work. He had many professional certifications and titles. His major client was Mars Incorporated for whom he worked until his death. A friend and director at Mars Incorporated, Thomas M. Terracino said to David, "Your legacy will stay with many of us for years?many will also benefit from your incredible impact."

In addition to Mars, another notable client was the Gemini Observatories in Hawaii and Chile. His work with multitude of clients also took him to the North Slope of Alaska, and the Hanford Nuclear Power Generating Station in Washington. Prior to forming his own business in 1988, David worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, General Motors, FMC Corporation. American Cyanamid and Marsh McLennan.

Often, David would use teaching approach with his clients to achieve engineering goals. Even during his later years and with his speech challenges, David taught large classes at the University of Oregon where students commented "you changed my life." After teaching Shasta Middle school student's classes in photography, the teacher said, "David is a natural teacher."

David loved people, but most important in his life was his family. He treasured his wife Anne, whom he met in Eugene and married in Hawaii on April 6, 1997. They enjoyed many of Eugene's cultural events together and traveled throughout the United States, and nine other countries. One of their favorite places was Easter Island. Anne loved traveling with David because TSA agents called him by name and with over a million air miles, they were most often places in First Class. Aneurysm surgery in 2009 left David with walking and speaking challenges and two years later, he was attacked by cancer, all requiring many trips to hospitals, doctor's offices, speech clinic and physical therapy. David said of Anne, "She has been a saint and has stuck with me through all the good days and bad."

David was also proud of his daughters and son. Elizabeth went to Manhattan College on a lacrosse scholarship and now is a kindergarten teacher in the Monroe Woodberry school district in Nanuet, New York. Megan went to Albany State College on a soccer scholarship and is a special education teacher at Pearl River School district in New City, New York. Jordan joined the Marines and served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Since, he has earned an associate degree and is working on his bachelor's degree while working several jobs, including a fireman for the Larchmont FD in Westchester County, New York. David's greatest joy was messages of love from Elizabeth and Megan on Father's Day and frequent calls from Jordan giving him encouragement. His only regret is that he will not see his grandchildren grow up and that he will not be able to help his children and his wife with life's little troubles.

David loved golfing and running, completing 17 marathons. His passion was photography. From 2000 to 2009, he took almost 45,000 photos and had several shows of his work. Through his Photography, David saw the beauty of everyday life, and a side of people and life that is simple and sacred.

His photographs will be shown at a memorial service on Friday, October 18, at 3 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 777 Coburg Road in Eugene.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make contributions to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the University of Oregon Foundation, specifying HEDCO Clinic in the College of Education. HEDCO is home to the Speech-Language-Hearing center where David was treated.

Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary. Please access the obituary and you are invited to sign the guestbook at musgroves.com

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) sides with Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961)

Dear f.John,

My e-mail reader "Squirrel Mail" always hides pictures in e-mail received through the internet. However, it has a "view unsafe images" choice, which then allows me to see the pix. There was a great picture of Jasper Cosgrove and his beautiful bride - that I was able to see.

As for you and Jasper Stebbins - count me among those who enjoy your discussions (tiffs). I am usually with Jasper Stebbins. What you see as stealing, I see as necessary parts of a societal social compact, where we, collectively, act through our government - the present stupidity notwithstanding.

[JR:

(1) That's good. In my two readers -- GMail and Apple's Mail client -- the pictures don't come through. Glad it works for some. It used to work; that's why I suspect Yahoo "changed" something.

(2) Ahh, I can see I have a lot of work to do on you. So, how did this "societal social compact" come to be? Did I sign some agreement.

(For those who have read my rantings on my blog know that I am driving down the "road" paved " by  Lysander Spooner in "The Constitution of no Authority" (1867) which I was taught in Manhattan Prep by some cranky WW2 vet Christian Brothers.)

See the Dead Old White Guys could bind themselves, but not future generations.

And, just to put a nail in the argument, think about the definition of "citizen" and the exchange of "allegiance" and "protection". Yet, the Gooferment, time after time, states flatly "there is no specific obligation to protect any individual". Hence "no compact".

The "present stupidity" is all about who is going to tell us what to do. Tyrants!

Remember the movie the Patriot? Benjamin Martin: "Would you tell me please, Mr. Howard, why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man's rights as easily as a king can." To apply it here. "Why should a trade one group of thieves for a different group who trample a our rights as easily as a king can?"

Finally, how is all this moral? (You remember that from Alama Mater and those darn theology courses.) The current Big Gooferment claim to the right to use force on people is basically immoral. Not to mention inefficient and ineffective. They can't even keep drugs out of their "maximum security" prisons. They, the Big Gooferment, are a joke; a very dangerous joke.

So, let's get to the favorite fun topic: "Without Gooferment, who will build the roads?"

]

[JR: Wasn't that fun! Time to do my laundry. At least, I can effect change in that department.]

"Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate." --- movie Gandhi (1983)

[JR: In the end, Non-violent non-cooperation will restore freedom and liberty to the USA.]

JEMAIL: Menchise, Louis (MC1987) has some advice for Pope Francis

What I want is for Pope Francis to excommunicate every priest who ever abused a child and turn them over to the police.

Menchise, Louis (MC1987)

# - # - #

[JR: That might be a little severe and premature. How about we start with everyone who's been involved in the cover ups?  ]

# - # - # - # - #  2013-Oct-13 @ 14:59

That would include most of the Church - covering up was what the Church had been doing for God knows how long. Anyone else accused of such crimes is investigated by the police, and tried if there is enough evidence. Why should priests get a break? The offenders have had years of freedom and protection. If I were the Pope, I'd say, "Time's up, fellahs... time to face the music." Those who covered up should pay a price, but not as heavy as the true offenders.

JNEWS: Alberta, Charles [MC1996] runs for C-WC Board Of Education

Alberta Announces Candidacy For C-WC Board Of Education

The 13-year West Caldwell resident seeks a seat on the board to take a more active role in improving the educational experience of every student and family in town.
Posted by Mike D'Onofrio (Editor) , October 14, 2013 at 02:11 PM

The following is a press release from Charles Alberta, a candidate in the 2013 Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education election.

*** begin quote ***

Charles Alberta announced his candidacy for the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education this week. Alberta is a 13-year resident of West Caldwell and father of four, with three children currently in the district’s schools.

He is an involved parent and has worked with the administration of the individual schools and the district to provided feedback, offer suggestions, and volunteer his time. He now seeks a seat on the board to take a more active role in improving the educational experience of every student and family in the district.

While the district provides a quality education for its students, there is always room for improvement and Alberta sees maximizing classroom teaching time and providing more differentiation among students with different learning profiles as areas to focus on.

“We need to challenge those that excel and support those that struggle or have special needs," said Alberta. "It is important to give children an opportunity to learn at their own pace but challenge them to continually exceed their potential.“

Alberta supports the new programs the district has developed in recent years to emphasize real world skills and prepare students for further education and life beyond high school.

He sees technology as a key factor in developing some of these new programs and would like to work with the district as they update the technology plan. It is important to refresh outdated equipment and get current technologies into the hands of more students every day.

Our teachers are very adept and current with the latest academic trends, procedures and technologies but the transferral of learning only takes place in an environment that addresses both academic and social issues.

Alberta hopes to assist in further development of policies and procedures that will ensure students are afforded a safe, friendly, and gratifying environment to learn and grow. He hopes to bring the family back into the schools with more opportunities and activities that allow for interaction.

“We need to do everything possible to ensure that every student enters school with a smile on their face because it is a place they want to be and leaves with a smile because of all that they have accomplished," said Alberta.

Alberta has been an active volunteer in the community and church for much of his life. He currently coaches teams in several sports across multiple age groups in the Caldwell-West Caldwell recreation programs. He has also been a coach and clinic director in the C-WC Soccer Club. He participates in triathlons, running, cycling, and obstacle events each year in support of various charities.

Alberta has resided in Northern New Jersey his entire life. He attended Paramus Catholic High School and Manhattan College. He is the son of an educator. Alberta’s mother has been teaching for over 40 years and a grammar school principal for the past 20.

He currently works at Morgan Stanley as a vice president in the Infrastructure and Data Center Project Management group. He hopes to bring his experience managing multi-faceted projects under tight budget and schedule constraints as well as negotiating contracts and leases to the Board.

“I am an ambitious parent raising my hand and asking for the opportunity to represent this community on the Board of Education," said Alberta. "I will work actively to improve the educational experience for my own children as well as every other child and family in our district.

"My approach to service on the board will be from the perspective of a parent with a focus on all aspects of the learning environment. I will encourage more involvement and feedback from the families of this community so they can be heard.”

There are two two seats on the board up for grabs this November. Board members Rosanne Hansen and John King will seek reelection, and will be challenged by Dan Cipoletti, Marie Lanfrank and Alberta.

The five will be on the ballot on the Nov. 5 general election. Both seats carry three-year terms.

Good Morning,

You are of course aware that Fellow Jasper, Owen McKeon, was called on October 12, 2013. His brother, Tom, tells us Owen died in the Peace of God and not in pain. As Kevin Dolan has said, Owen was a loving and gentle man who will be missed by all. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 9:45 AM:

Church Of The Presentation
271 West Saddle River Road
Upper Saddle River, New Jersey 07458
(201) 327 - 1313

Owen, Our Brother In Christ, was a man of deep faith who lived his life and walked the walk in God's way. He was a man of great wit who could cut to the chase with a smile and always make you feel included. He was a man whose family was at the top of his priority list, his friendship was very special to me and so many others. Owen was, as he always signed off, Our Brother In Christ. The meaning of those words were gospel to Owen and he lived their meaning. Thank you Owen, you made me see the Love in those words.

Owen was a United States Naval Officer and certainly a gentleman. Owen's journey is over on this earth but his memory will not pale and he will not be forgotten. Please allow me to share part of the United States Naval Hyman, Eternal Father, Strong To Save, Verse 1:

Eternal Father, Strong To Save
Whose Arm has bound the restless Wave,
Who Bidd'st The Mighty Ocean Deep
Its' Own Appointed Limits Keep;
Oh Hear Us When We Cry To Thee,
For Those In Peril On The Sea.

Owen's mortal bounds have been loosed and he is in God's Embrace. " Fair Winds And Following Seas, Owen. "

Please keep Owen, his Wife Marie, his brother Tom and their family in your prayers as we pray that they find the Peace Of Jesus in the certain knowledge that Owen is in God's Embrace. Thank you. God Bless.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) adds two intentions

Good Morning All,

Fellow Jasper and member of our Retreat Team, Tim Mante, asks for our prayers for his Daughter's friend, Nick Modico. Nick is 22 years old and being treated for Ewing's Sarcoma. We pray to improve Nick's outlook and prognosis. Please keep this young man and his family in your prayers. let us raise the volume.

I ask you to pray for My Daughter-In-Law's Father, Cliva. He has successfully navigated through surgery, is waiting to have part of the procedure reversed, as planned, and the MDs have discovered an unusual culture in his throat. We pray that it is not the sign of a larger problem. The MDs are being cautious and that is a good thing. Please keep the volume up.

Thank you. God Bless.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the College will honor Thorntons accomplishments with a plaque unveiling ceremony in the William J. Scala Academy room.

Dr. Bill Thornton has distinguished himself through his professional accomplishments around the world, said Tim J. Ward, Ph.D., P.E., dean of the School of Engineering. As an expert on the design of steel connections, Thornton has traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and Mexico to lecture on this subject. He is also the author or co-author of more than 70 technical papers, including three published in 2012 in the "AISC Engineering Journal."

Throughout his 50-year career as an engineer, he has spent more than 30 years working for Cives Engineering Corporation as chief engineer, president and currently as vice president and corporate consultant. As president, Thornton managed all of the structural design performed by Cives Engineering and was a consultant to the six divisions of Cives Steel Company in matters relating to welding, quality assurance, connection design and fabrication practices.

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) recognized Thorntons career in 2003 with the AISC Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1996, with the T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award. He also received the 2004 Craftsmanship Award of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York.

In the past, Thornton has taught at Clarkson University and has been invited to lecture at numerous AISC, Structural Engineering Association and Cives Corporation sponsored seminars on connection design. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and a member of the American Welding Society (AWS) and the Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC), and he currently serves as a member of the technical committees of AISC, ASCE and RCSC.

WESTERLEIGH — There are champions who soak in the glory, stop and smell the roses, and there are those who push on immediately to the next challenge.

For 41-year-old Westerleigh resident Kerry McCole, there seem to be no boundaries.

McCole recently won the elite division of the Vermont Spartan World Championship Beast race in Killington, a physically and mentally challenging 12-mile race that included running, swimming, and 25 obstacles that test the competitor’s ability to endure.

*** and ***

Why would a mother of four even attempt such a race?

McCole comes from an athletic background. The track-and-field world used to know her as Kerry Moloughney, a seven-time Advance All Star and one of the Island’s best ever in that sport. Included in her athletic resume were numerous Island and Catholic High School Athletic Association titles while competing for Notre Dame Academy. At Manhattan College, she set six school records and won the Metro Atlantic conference cross country championship.

After college, there was graduate school at Long Island University, and ultimately, a doctorate in physical therapy.

Then came marriage, a job as a physical therapist, but also, still some time for training.

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) cites MoH winner Ed Freeman

FROM: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957)

*** begin quote ***

Subject: Fwd: A 19 year old KID

You're a 19 year old kid.

You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam .

It's November 11, 1967.

LZ (landing zone) X-ray.

Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.

You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out.

Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again.

As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter.

You look up to see a Huey coming in. But.. It doesn't seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it.

Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you.

He's not MedEvac so it's not his job, but he heard the radio call and decided he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.

Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board.

Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses and safety.

And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!!

Until all the wounded were out. No one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm.

He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey.

Medal of Honor Recipient, Captain Ed Freeman, United States Air Force, died last Wednesday at the age of 70, in Boise , Idaho

May God Bless and Rest His Soul.

I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing, but we've sure seen a whole bunch about Lindsay Lohan, Tiger Woods and the bickering of congress over HealthReform.

Medal of Honor Winner Captain Ed Freeman

Shame on the media !!!

Now... YOU pass this along.

Honor this real hero.

Please.

ENDNOTE: NOBEL LOSS Malala Yousafzai

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/10/12/if-we-get-another-chance-we-will-definitely-kill-her-taliban-cheers-nobel-loss-for-the-girl-they-tried-to-kill/

WORLD
‘IF WE GET ANOTHER CHANCE, WE WILL DEFINITELY KILL HER’: TALIBAN CHEERS NOBEL LOSS FOR THE GIRL THEY TRIED TO KILL
Oct. 12, 2013 9:52am Mike Opelka

*** begin quote ***

The 2013 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

And the Taliban in Pakistan cheered.

However, they were not cheering for OPCW, but celebrating that the prize did not go to Malala Yousafzai, one of the popular favorites.

Malala Yousafzai is a name you should recognize. She’s the 16-year-old Pakistani girl who made news after being shot in the face by a member of the Taliban.

*** end quote ***

This is two pronged ranting endnote.

Threatening to kill little girls is evil. Killing them a racial contra survival trait. One would expect that over time, that attitude would have to change or the population would go extinct. Like the Shakers. Incredibly dumb! (imho. the fat old white guy injineer in me remember Brother Austin Barry saying "don't make blunders and especially not the same ones over and over".)

Part two is reserved for the Nobel Prizes. OBVIOUSLY socialist political decisions. BHO44 gets a "peace prize" for essentially doing nothing and then proceeds make war and kill innocents. Are you kidding me? And, then they ignore this powerful young woman who's quietly making a statement at great personal risk. I've added them to my "Jane Fonda" list. Just like I won't read about those on that list or spend any money that benefits them, neither will I be impressed by "Nobel Prizes". Argh! (I'm sure they don't care, but remember the adage: "one satisfied Customer will tell ten friends; a dissatisfied one will tell one hundred."

I'm dissatisfied!
