Mr. Butler, a renal industry veteran, was CEO of Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals from 2011 through April 2013 and was named President and CEO of Akebia in August 2013. Prior to serving as CEO of Inspiration, Mr. Butler held several positions at Genzyme Corporation, including President of both Genzyme’s Cardiometabolic and Renal Division and orphan disease division. While at Genzyme, Mr. Butler led the successful launches of Renagel and Renvela, and the renal division grew from $150 million to over $1 billion in annual revenue. He has served on numerous not- for-profit boards, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the American Kidney Fund.

About Hyperkalemia and Patiromer
Hyperkalemia, a life-threatening condition defined as abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood, is frequently prevalent in patients who suffer from renal impairment, hypertension, diabetes and/or heart failure. Hyperkalemia can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death. Patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure are at particular risk for developing hyperkalemia, especially those treated with RAAS inhibitors such as ARBs (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers), AAs (Aldosterone Antagonists), and ACE (Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme) Inhibitors. Although RAAS inhibition has been shown to protect kidney and cardiac function, many patients who could benefit from RAAS inhibitors are untreated or undertreated due to the undesirable side effect of increasing serum potassium.
Patiromer (RLY5016 for Oral Suspension) is a high capacity non-absorbed oral potassium binder being developed for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Relypsa has completed several clinical trials of patiromer that have demonstrated the preliminary efficacy, safety and tolerability of patiromer in patients with hyperkalemia.

We welcome Dr. Tina DeSa as the new Principal of Nassau Elementary School, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Dr. DeSa has held various administrative positions, including Race To The Top Network Team Leader with Dutchess BOCES, Associate for School Improvement Services with NYSED, and Assistant Director at St. John’s University's Freshman Center and Student Development for Athletes. She earned both her doctorate in Instructional Leadership and Masters in Sociology from St. John’s University. Dr. DeSa earned her BS in Elementary Education from Manhattan College and brings the lens of an experienced elementary classroom teacher to the principal role. Last fall, Dr. DeSa worked with Spackenkill teachers on developing their Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). We are excited to have her on our team.

Great Week!
We are wrapping up a great week at SHS! After coming off Homecoming week, we have had a smooth week with many classes picking up the learning expectations as the courses are now (if they have not already done so) moving into new material. Our freshman and sophomore students are finishing up their reading portion of the MAP test, with math next week.
Please remember to encourage your student(s) to get plenty of rest and proper nutrition to perform the best they can in the classroom. We have an excellent food service here at SHS, and we also have a free after school snack for all students involved in tutoring and/or our co-curricular programming.

It is with a very heavy heart that I ask for your prayers for a dear friend and fellow Jasper, Owen F. McKeon '60 BBA CPA. Owen's Brother, Tom has let us know that Owen is suffering from Stage 4 Cancer and is in Hospital at the V.A. in Lyons, New Jersey. It is a shock to the whole family, including Owen who did not realize the depth of his cancer. Owen, his wife Marie and their Family need our prayers. I ask you to raise the volume for this very good man and keep it high as we pray for a turn-around in Owen's condition. Owen is a man of faith who trusts in God and has been a strong supporter of our prayer efforts throughout the years. He has been an integral member of our Retreat Team and so often has been responsible for the Themes of our Retreat. A great sense of humor, he brings a deep sense of brotherhood and love wherever he is and always to our Retreat meetings and Retreats. On Sept. 22, the Manhattan College baseball team participated in a 5K run on Staten Island in support of Michael's Cause, named for Michael Capolongo, a seven-year-old boy from Staten Island, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The Manhattan College men's basketball team was chosen first in the 2013-14 MAAC preseason poll, selected by the league's 11 head coaches. The Jaspers received 10 first-place votes, on their way to being selected atop the preseason poll for the first time since 2004.
Elizabeth Weber Named Women's Lacrosse Head Coach
Elizabeth Weber was named the new head women's lacrosse coach on Sept. 11. Weber comes to Manhattan after serving as the head coach at Holy Family University, where she led the Tigers to a 27-9 record and two consecutive conference championships in two seasons.

Walking the Walk - I'm On My Way
Here's the latest blog post from missioner-in-training Hady Mendez. Hady and her five classmates are training at our Washington, D.C. headquarters for service to Bolivia.
We have been discussing the notion of “simplicity” during formation. Essentially, the act of “living more with less”. I wish I could explain the new direction my life is taking, in light of these discussions, in a way that other people could understand. I’ll try giving it a shot here.
My Goal: To be the same Hady (the ultimate story teller, your encouraging buddy, the healthy eater). Only better.
And while my behaviors and attitudes are changing, the core "me" is staying the same. You see, my values aren’t changing -- I still love great food, being pampered, taking amazing trips, and staying healthy and fit.
So what will be different, you ask? Let’s see…
You might find me shopping at a local farmers market instead of a high-end super market because the food will be fresher and because it will be better for the environment to support local suppliers.
I might be more inclined to host a potluck dinner then to go out for an expensive meal so I can spend time enjoying my friends. We could all have the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen, and we could save some money in the process.
I will make more of an effort to see the face of Jesus in the poor and homeless instead of trying to figure out their reasons for being on the street. And I will volunteer more often with organizations that promote human dignity and treat homeless people with care and respect.
You will still see me traveling, for it is my heart’s passion. But I will travel with purpose as one of my core values is to see the world and meet different people.
I will still drink coconut water, for my body is my temple and coconut water is healing. I will always find ways to treat my body right and look and feel good.
I will still go shopping, but will make a conscious effort to look for fair-trade options or companies whose mission includes more than just making a profit. One of my favorites spots right now is a store called Ten Thousand Villages.
Alas - I will smile more. Because my heart is fuller. Because during more moments of my life, I'll be doing things I enjoy and that mean something to me. Because my relationship with God is giving my life more purpose.
So, this is where I AM in my life’s journey. It comforts me to know we all have the choice to live according to what moves us and brings us true and deep happiness. What that looks like, may be different for all of us.
I'm on the right path for me. So far, I find it to be liberating. And joyful. And peaceful. All rolled into one!

Andrew Greene, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, was awarded a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellowship, a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. He was one of only six whose fellowship was sponsored by the American Mathematical Society. The program addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities.
Rostislav Konoplich, Ph.D., professor of physics and a member of ATLAS, a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN that is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. He was among the recipients of the European Physical Society 2013 High Energy and Particle Physics prize “for the discovery of a Higgs boson, as predicted by the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.”
Student Accomplishments
Betsy Camano ’14 attended the George Washington University Summer Program for Women in Mathematics, a prestigious five-week program for 16 outstanding undergraduate women majoring in mathematical disciplines who are considering graduate study in the mathematical sciences. Each attendee of the program receives a travel allowance, campus room and board, and a stipend of $1,750.
Biology major Mastanna Eraife ’14 worked with Ghislaine Mayer, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, as part of the School of Science Dean’s Office Summer Program. They collaborated with researchers at Benin City Teaching Hospital in Nigeria and Winston Salem State University to decipher the interactions between HIV, plasmodium and drug therapies used in sub-Saharan Africa. Their collaborative work is currently under review for the Journal of Bacteriology and Parasitology.
Mastanna was invited to give an oral presentation of her research, The Prevalence of Plasmodium vivax and malariae in HIV-Infected Patients in Benin City, at the American Society of Parasitologists meeting in Quebec City in June of 2013. She gave the same presentation to the campus community on Sept. 13.
Mathematics major Kimsy Tor ’15 attended the Fields Institute Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Toronto. Her group research project Dynamical Systems Models in Macroeconomics explored the use of mathematical models for predator-prey interactions to explain economic cycles and financial instability. This is Tor’s second international undergraduate research experience; in 2011 she attended a summer program in France.
Biology majors Alexandra Gomez ’13, Kathryn McGovern ’13, Ashley Mennuti ’13, Lauren Scelsa ’13, Mary Screen’13 and Walter Wiley ’13 earned Awards for Excellence for research papers presented at the 67th annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference at Providence College on April 20. Scelsa also earned an award for her platform presentation.

Mary Michel, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting, and Janet Rovenpor, Ph.D., professor of management, recently published the case study, “New York Life: Adjusting the Investment Portfolio to Market Conditions,” in the Case Research Journal (CRJ), the leading academic journal for cases in business and related disciplines in North America. The case study is a collaboration of research conducted on how New York Life “used a ‘quality tilt’ investment strategy that brought the company successfully through the depths of the financial crisis,” as described by Michel and Rovenpor. The case study will be utilized by accounting and finance students at Manhattan College, and also shared as a resource with other schools through CJR. Read the New York Life press release.

Kevin Ahern, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies, recently had two of his blog posts cited by national publications. America Magazine republished his reflection on Pope Francis’s appointment of the new Vatican Secretary of State on Aug. 31, and the Rev. Thomas Reese of the National Catholic Review extensively cited Ahern’s reflection on the Syrian conflict on Sept. 3.
Pamela Chasek, Ph.D., director of the International Studies program and professor of government, co-authored an article, “Green Pluralism: Lessons for Improved Environmental Governance in the 21st Century,” which appeared in the Sept./Oct. 2013 edition of Environment.
Chasek also co-edited a book, Improving Global Environmental Governance, which will be released Oct. 10.
Julie Leininger Pycior, Ph.D., professor of history, published "The 'Game of the Century': A Tragic Parable for Our Times" in the Huff Post on Sept. 19.
John Wilcox, Ph.D., director for the Center of Lasallian Studies, published an article entitled "Higher Learning: Catholic colleges and universities on a mission" in the National Catholic Review on Sept. 9.

Thomas L. Black
AGE: 68 • Clinton
Thomas L. Black, 68, entered eternal life peacefully at home on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013. Son of the late Louis and Eleanor Black, Thomas was born in Staten Island, NY and lived in South Bound Brook for many years before moving to Clinton in 2011. He was a 1962 Honor Society Graduate of St. Peter's H.S. in Staten Island and he graduated in 1966 with a BA in Accounting from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. Thomas worked for the NJ Department of Transportation "Right of Way Division," as a supervisor retiring in 2008. He was a Communicant and Usher at Our Lady of Mercy Church in South Bound Brook for over 30 years; coached, managed and was past president of the South Bound Brook- Somerset Little League; was an avid NY Yankee's fan, loved being with his family, bowling, golf and watching sunrises in the Outer Banks.
He is predeceased by his son, James L. Black in 2010. Thomas leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Adele (Trautman) Black of Clinton; son, Thomas H. Black and wife Susan of Slate Hill, NY; daughters, Linda A. Tronolone and husband Robert of Clinton, Laura L. Lumbatis and husband Ryan of Gilbertsville, PA; 7 grandchildren, Janine, Brittany, Kelly, Samantha, Jaclyn, James and Lillian; siblings, Robert Black of NY, Peter Black of NY, Eloise Watson of NY, Susan Duval of NY, Joan Willadsen of NY, Louis Black of NY, Jean Guidera of NY and Matthew Black of FL; godson, Chris Trautman and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Funeral services will begin with prayers, 8 am at the funeral home on Monday, October 7, 2013 followed by a 9 am Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Church in South Bound Brook. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in East Millstone. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .

Sister Eugenia Margaret Ready, SUSC, (Eileen Ready) of Fall River, MA died October 2, 2013 at Catholic Memorial Home at the age of 90. She was born in Fall River, MA in 1922 the daughter of the late Eugene and Margaret (Doherty) Ready. In addition to her Holy Union Sisters, her brother Daniel, sister-in-law Dorothy and sister Regina (Ready) O'Brien and brother-in-law James, several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews survive her. Her sisters Gertrude O'Brien, Elizabeth Wilson, brothers Eugene and William predeceased her.
Sr. Eugenia Margaret was a graduate of the former Sacred Hearts Academy, Fall River. She entered the Holy Union Sisters in Fall River, MA in 1940 and pronounced her final vows on August 15, 1948. She studied at Stonehill College, North Easton, MA, Rivier College, Nashua NH and received a B.A. from Manhattan College and a Masters in library science from Villanova University. In her early teaching career, she taught in parish elementary schools in Baltimore, New York City, Queens, and Taunton, MA. She taught at the former Holy Union Preparatory School, Tiverton, RI. She taught English, typing, algebra and served as librarian at the former Sacred Hearts Academy, Fall River, Holy Family High School, New Bedford and Coyle and Cassidy High School, Taunton. She served as a trustee of the Fall River Public Library from 1972 to 1984. She became a pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Fall River from 1995 until her retirement in 2006.
All funeral services will take place at Sacred Heart Church, Fall River on Saturday, October 5, 2013. The wake in the Church is from 8:30 AM to 9:30AM followed immediately by the Memorial Prayer. The Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:15AM, followed by burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River. Funeral arrangements are by Waring-Sullivan Funeral Home, Fall River. It was a beautiful day in the Bronx, 32 years ago today. We were all upstairs in the Chapel of Smith Auditorium at Manhattan College.
Danny and Nancy were married 32 years ago today. The reception – along the waters of the Long Island sound in the New Rochelle portion of Westchester.
Peg was told by an attendee,” Your boys sure party real well”. My mothers reply: “They work hared, and they play hard”.
Years have passed, Mike was born – and now he is in the NYC Police Acecemy – and 16 Teresa Drive is chock full of memories.

In that case, then certainly you and I as Americans should know the connection. We must find it even if money is a difficult and tricky subject. I suppose that if most people were asked for their views on money, the almost universal answer would be that they didn’t have enough of it.
In a free country, the monetary unit rests upon a fixed foundation of gold or gold and silver independent of the ruling politicians. Our dollar was that kind of money before 1933. Under that system, paper currency is redeemable for a certain weight of gold, at the free option and choice of the holder of paper money.

Printing press money robs the poor, the pensioners, and anyone who uses this creation of the Devil.
Unbacked by anything but the politicians' promise, it is a meaningless IOU.
In the old days, pre 1913, if the Gooferment want to spend money, then they had to get it from the people.
Now, they just make some computer entries and poof every "dollar" in your pocket is worth less.
Go back to the three silver dimes for a gallon of gas in the 60's. Those three SILVER dimes are worth about 6 of today's "dollars".
I know I'm only fat old white guy injineer, but even I can see the problem.
Gas is NOT more expensive; the money is worth less.
Why do you think the Chinese have the world's largest gold supply, and they are buying anything of value with their "dollars"?
