JNEWS: Butler, John P. [MC1986] BoD Relypsa, Inc.

Relypsa Adds Renal Industry Veteran John P. Butler to Board of Directors
Press Release: Relypsa, Inc. – 14 hours ago

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Relypsa, Inc., a pharmaceutical company, today announced the addition of John P. Butler to its Board of Directors.

Mr. Butler, a renal industry veteran, was CEO of Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals from 2011 through April 2013 and was named President and CEO of Akebia in August 2013. Prior to serving as CEO of Inspiration, Mr. Butler held several positions at Genzyme Corporation, including President of both Genzyme’s Cardiometabolic and Renal Division and orphan disease division. While at Genzyme, Mr. Butler led the successful launches of Renagel and Renvela, and the renal division grew from $150 million to over $1 billion in annual revenue. He has served on numerous not- for-profit boards, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the American Kidney Fund.

“As we continue to advance patiromer toward an NDA filing and begin plans to commercialize the product, John’s commercial experience in the renal segment and with polymeric drugs will be an important addition to our Board. With our recent statistically significant primary and secondary efficacy endpoints for the first part of our two-part pivotal Phase 3 trial, John’s insights will be invaluable as we transition to a company that is aiming to deliver to the market an important drug for the treatment of hyperkalemia,” noted John Orwin, Relypsa’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Prior to Genzyme, Mr. Butler held commercial positions at Amgen Inc. and Hoffmann-La Roche. He received his bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and his MBA from the Zicklin School, Baruch College, City University of New York.

About Hyperkalemia and Patiromer

Hyperkalemia, a life-threatening condition defined as abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood, is frequently prevalent in patients who suffer from renal impairment, hypertension, diabetes and/or heart failure. Hyperkalemia can lead to cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death. Patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure are at particular risk for developing hyperkalemia, especially those treated with RAAS inhibitors such as ARBs (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers), AAs (Aldosterone Antagonists), and ACE (Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme) Inhibitors. Although RAAS inhibition has been shown to protect kidney and cardiac function, many patients who could benefit from RAAS inhibitors are untreated or undertreated due to the undesirable side effect of increasing serum potassium.

Patiromer (RLY5016 for Oral Suspension) is a high capacity non-absorbed oral potassium binder being developed for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Relypsa has completed several clinical trials of patiromer that have demonstrated the preliminary efficacy, safety and tolerability of patiromer in patients with hyperkalemia.

About Relypsa, Inc.

Relypsa, Inc. is a privately held pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of non-absorbed polymeric drugs to treat disorders in the areas of renal, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Enrollment of the company’s two-part pivotal Phase 3 trial of its lead product candidate, patiromer, for the treatment of hyperkalemia, a life-threatening condition defined as abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood, has been completed. The first part of this trial met both the primary and secondary endpoints, with the results being both statistically significant and clinically meaningful. Primary endpoint results from the second part of this trial are expected to be reported in the fourth quarter of 2013. Relypsa has global royalty-free commercialization rights to patiromer and intellectual property protection in the U.S. until at least 2030. More information is available at www.relypsa.com.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) calls the Christian Service Center "false"

Dear Jasper John,

Why don't you check out the truth of statements you repeat on Jasper Jottings.?
The story about the Christian  Service Center in Lake City Florida is false.
Anything you get from FOX is of course very likely to be false, but all statements should be checked.

BTW their address is

441 NW Washington St
Lake City, FL 32055-2734
It took me all of 2 minutes to find it.

You can send them some change now.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins

[JR: Thanks for the address. You said it was "false", but you didn't offer any evidence. If I tried to verify independently everything "collected" here in Jottings, I'd do nothing but verifying. Believe it or not, I TRY to stay out of the realm of political. (Since I don't like either the D's OR the R's.) I just point out the items give me heartburn. Gooferment in religion is one of those. I will send them a donation as soon as I verify this isn't YOUR address. Seriously, if you have some evidence that the report is false, please share it with me and Fox News. (I don't regard Media Matters as "credible".) Based on what we have seen with the IRS and Tea Party, I'm more inclined to believe bad about the Gooferment. You do distinguish between the Fox News and their "opinion" shows. Always appreciate your participation.]

Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961)

[JR: Oh and for the record, I am against the Gooferment doing "charity". They should not be giving welfare either. Remember our previous discussions I'm a cheerleader for Ebenezer and as such none of this would be a problem if I was in charge. (First thing, I do is abdicate. No woman or man should be allowed to use the guns of government on anyone else.) I don't consent to being governed. If I don't knuckle under, they will kill me and my kin. So one has to bide their time. The revolution is coming. Just see how many folks speed!]

[NOTE: Revised slightly. The whole thing didn't get up on the first try. Interesting. I'll have to try and figure out why not.]

Great Week!
We are wrapping up a great week at SHS! After coming off Homecoming week, we have had a smooth week with many classes picking up the learning expectations as the courses are now (if they have not already done so) moving into new material. Our freshman and sophomore students are finishing up their reading portion of the MAP test, with math next week.

Please remember to encourage your student(s) to get plenty of rest and proper nutrition to perform the best they can in the classroom. We have an excellent food service here at SHS, and we also have a free after school snack for all students involved in tutoring and/or our co-curricular programming.

I hope you all have a great weekend and GO SPARTANS!!!

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) cites brother of McKeon, Own F. [MC1960]

Good Morning All,

It is with a very heavy heart that I ask for your prayers for a dear friend and fellow Jasper, Owen F. McKeon '60 BBA CPA. Owen's Brother, Tom has let us know that Owen is suffering from Stage 4 Cancer and is in Hospital at the V.A. in Lyons, New Jersey. It is a shock to the whole family, including Owen who did not realize the depth of his cancer. Owen, his wife Marie and their Family need our prayers. I ask you to raise the volume for this very good man and keep it high as we pray for a turn-around in Owen's condition. Owen is a man of faith who trusts in God and has been a strong supporter of our prayer efforts throughout the years. He has been an integral member of our Retreat Team and so often has been responsible for the Themes of our Retreat. A great sense of humor, he brings a deep sense of brotherhood and love wherever he is and always to our Retreat meetings and Retreats. Owen always signs his emails with YBIC, Your Brother In Christ, which always challenges me to be a better person. Thank you Owen, we need you in our lives. Please keep Owen, Marie and their family in your prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

Former NYPD Chief Wilbur (Bill) Chapman — who has experience with racially profiling — says that police work is a marriage of the two Cs: 'cops and community.' Chapman says before it was called 'stop-and-frisk,' he and his partner stopped and searched people suspected of plotting crimes, and 'the good guys loved us.'

*** begin quote ***

Chapman soon became a sergeant, earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Manhattan College and rocketed through the department to deputy inspector, commanding the 81st and 113rd Precincts, and kept rising to chief of patrol. “I served under Commissioner Bill Bratton and with Jack Maple, and I think their CompStat method has its real merits,” he says. “You must hold people accountable for crime in their precincts. But policing is more than a numbers game. You must also establish and maintain the marriage between the two Cs.”

JBLOGGER: Mendez, Hady [MC1992] in her own words

http://franciscanmissionservice.blogspot.com/2013/10/walking-walk-im-on-my-way.html

Walking the Walk - I'm On My Way

Here's the latest blog post from missioner-in-training Hady Mendez. Hady and her five classmates are training at our Washington, D.C. headquarters for service to Bolivia.

We have been discussing the notion of “simplicity” during formation. Essentially, the act of “living more with less”. I wish I could explain the new direction my life is taking, in light of these discussions, in a way that other people could understand. I’ll try giving it a shot here.

My Goal: To be the same Hady (the ultimate story teller, your encouraging buddy, the healthy eater). Only better.

And while my behaviors and attitudes are changing, the core "me" is staying the same. You see, my values aren’t changing -- I still love great food, being pampered, taking amazing trips, and staying healthy and fit.

So what will be different, you ask? Let’s see…

You might find me shopping at a local farmers market instead of a high-end super market because the food will be fresher and because it will be better for the environment to support local suppliers.

I might be more inclined to host a potluck dinner then to go out for an expensive meal so I can spend time enjoying my friends. We could all have the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen, and we could save some money in the process.

I will make more of an effort to see the face of Jesus in the poor and homeless instead of trying to figure out their reasons for being on the street. And I will volunteer more often with organizations that promote human dignity and treat homeless people with care and respect.

You will still see me traveling, for it is my heart’s passion. But I will travel with purpose as one of my core values is to see the world and meet different people.

I will still drink coconut water, for my body is my temple and coconut water is healing. I will always find ways to treat my body right and look and feel good.

I will still go shopping, but will make a conscious effort to look for fair-trade options or companies whose mission includes more than just making a profit. One of my favorites spots right now is a store called Ten Thousand Villages.

Alas - I will smile more. Because my heart is fuller. Because during more moments of my life, I'll be doing things I enjoy and that mean something to me. Because my relationship with God is giving my life more purpose.

So, this is where I AM in my life’s journey. It comforts me to know we all have the choice to live according to what moves us and brings us true and deep happiness. What that looks like, may be different for all of us.

I'm on the right path for me. So far, I find it to be liberating. And joyful. And peaceful. All rolled into one!

I have been babysitting children of all different ages, from infant to young teens, for about 10 years now. I really get along with children and feel that it is very important to make a connection with them. My priorities are to keep any child under my care safe and happy. I have also spent two years working at an overnight summer camp in the United States. I taught different age groups dance classes throughout the day, and lived with a group of girl campers at night. This job gave me a lot of experience with different aged children and the responsibility of watching over many children at one time.

Hobbies & Interests: I love to dance, read, listen to music, and spend time outside! I am able to do crafts, and create activities that could occupy any aged child.

School of Science Accomplishments: September 2013

Faculty Accomplishments

Andrew Greene, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, was awarded a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellowship, a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. He was one of only six whose fellowship was sponsored by the American Mathematical Society. The program addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides the participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities.

Rostislav Konoplich, Ph.D., professor of physics and a member of ATLAS, a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN that is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. He was among the recipients of the European Physical Society 2013 High Energy and Particle Physics prize “for the discovery of a Higgs boson, as predicted by the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.”
Student Accomplishments

Betsy Camano ’14 attended the George Washington University Summer Program for Women in Mathematics, a prestigious five-week program for 16 outstanding undergraduate women majoring in mathematical disciplines who are considering graduate study in the mathematical sciences. Each attendee of the program receives a travel allowance, campus room and board, and a stipend of $1,750.

Biology major Mastanna Eraife ’14 worked with Ghislaine Mayer, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, as part of the School of Science Dean’s Office Summer Program. They collaborated with researchers at Benin City Teaching Hospital in Nigeria and Winston Salem State University to decipher the interactions between HIV, plasmodium and drug therapies used in sub-Saharan Africa. Their collaborative work is currently under review for the Journal of Bacteriology and Parasitology.

Mastanna was invited to give an oral presentation of her research, The Prevalence of Plasmodium vivax and malariae in HIV-Infected Patients in Benin City, at the American Society of Parasitologists meeting in Quebec City in June of 2013. She gave the same presentation to the campus community on Sept. 13.

Mathematics major Kimsy Tor ’15 attended the Fields Institute Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Toronto. Her group research project Dynamical Systems Models in Macroeconomics explored the use of mathematical models for predator-prey interactions to explain economic cycles and financial instability. This is Tor’s second international undergraduate research experience; in 2011 she attended a summer program in France.

Biology majors Alexandra Gomez ’13, Kathryn McGovern ’13, Ashley Mennuti ’13, Lauren Scelsa ’13, Mary Screen’13 and Walter Wiley ’13 earned Awards for Excellence for research papers presented at the 67th annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference at Providence College on April 20. Scelsa also earned an award for her platform presentation.

MFOUND: A wedding anniversary

http://hydbyh.com/farkels/9-25-1981/

9/25/1981

It was a beautiful day in the Bronx, 32 years ago today. We were all upstairs in the Chapel of Smith Auditorium at Manhattan College.

Danny and Nancy were married 32 years ago today. The reception – along the waters of the Long Island sound in the New Rochelle portion of Westchester.

Peg was told by an attendee,” Your boys sure party real well”. My mothers reply: “They work hared, and they play hard”.

Years have passed, Mike was born – and now he is in the NYC Police Acecemy – and 16 Teresa Drive is chock full of memories.

Happy, happy anniversary Dug and Nancy!!!!!

Ad Multos Anos,

Ur Best Man

ENDNOTE: Gold Backed Money is essential to liberty

http://dailyreckoning.com/gold-backed-money-the-choice-of-a-free-society/

Gold Backed Money: The Choice of a Free Society
by Howard Buffett.
Posted Sep 20, 2013.

*** begin quote ***

Is there a connection between human freedom and a gold-redeemable money? At first glance, it would seem that money belongs to the world of economics and human freedom to the political sphere.

But when you recall that one of the first moves by Lenin, Mussolini and Hitler was to outlaw individual ownership of gold, you begin to sense that there may be some connection between money, redeemable in gold, and the rare prize known as human liberty.

I hold here what is called a $20 gold piece… But today the ownership of such gold pieces as money… is outlawed. Also, when you find that Lenin declared and demonstrated that a sure way to overturn the existing social order and bring about communism was by printing-press paper money, then again you are impressed with the possibility of a relationship between a gold-backed money and human freedom.

In that case, then certainly you and I as Americans should know the connection. We must find it even if money is a difficult and tricky subject. I suppose that if most people were asked for their views on money, the almost universal answer would be that they didn’t have enough of it.

In a free country, the monetary unit rests upon a fixed foundation of gold or gold and silver independent of the ruling politicians. Our dollar was that kind of money before 1933. Under that system, paper currency is redeemable for a certain weight of gold, at the free option and choice of the holder of paper money.

*** end quote ***

Printing press money robs the poor, the pensioners, and anyone who uses this creation of the Devil.

Unbacked by anything but the politicians' promise, it is a meaningless IOU.

In the old days, pre 1913, if the Gooferment want to spend money, then they had to get it from the people.

Now, they just make some computer entries and poof every "dollar" in your pocket is worth less.

Go back to the three silver dimes for a gallon of gas in the 60's. Those three SILVER dimes are worth about 6 of today's "dollars".

I know I'm only fat old white guy injineer, but even I can see the problem.

Gas is NOT more expensive; the money is worth less.

Why do you think the Chinese have the world's largest gold supply, and they are buying anything of value with their "dollars"?

Argh!
