POSITRACTION: A ring comes home

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/08/19/american-world-war-ii-pow-prized-gold-ring-comes-home-after-70-year-journey/

American POW's prized gold ring comes home after he gave it away for food during World War II | Fox News

*** begin quote ***

Deliveries of Red Cross parcels to Stalag VII-A had all but ceased, and the U.S. Army bomber co-pilot and his fellow POWs were subsisting on scanty rations of bug-infested soup and bread. Outside the wire, Adolf Hitler's forces showed no signs of giving up.

Cold and hungry, the North Carolinian made a difficult decision. He slipped the gold aviator's ring — a gift from his parents — off his finger and passed it through a fence to an Italian POW, who handed back a couple of chocolate bars.

He would never again see the ring. But it did not disappear.

Last week, about a dozen family members and friends gathered in the living room of David C. Cox Jr.'s Raleigh home and watched as he slit open a small yellow parcel from Germany. The 67-year-old son dug through the crinkly packing material and carefully removed a little plastic box.

*** end quote ***

The punch line is that no funds transferred.

There are so many good souls in the world.

I hope I have a chance to do something like this.

Best I've been able to do is NOT rip off a WalMart cashier. (Hey, she wanted to give me more change than I was entitled too. Much more change! But I figured it'd come out of her hide.)

Listen to the little voices and eventually (I hope) it becomes easier.

(Till then I wish for challenges in proportion to my character. Eeryone says I'm a character.)

In this case, I can only say a prayer for good things to come to all involved.

Dona Nobis Pacem!

If there were no wars, we wouldn't have these challenges.

JNEWS: Sachs, John Richard [MC1956 RIP] a longer story than the obit

http://www.newsday.com/long-island/obituaries/dr-john-richard-sachs-of-nyc-dies-at-78-1.5992366

Dr. John Richard Sachs of NYC dies at 78

Published: August 31, 2013 8:18 PM
By SCOTT EIDLER scott.eidler@newsday.com

Most mornings as John Sachs left home for service at a Walter Reed center near Washington, D.C., his children would line up at the door and salute their father, a doctor who was drafted during the Vietnam War.

"He loved it," son John Sachs Jr., of Manhattan, recalled. "I was very proud of him."

A renowned blood researcher who worked for three decades at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Sachs died July 17 of complications from a fall. He was 78.

Sachs was born in Brooklyn on July 29, 1934, to a family of modest means, his son said. A big break was earning a spot at Regis High School in Manhattan. From there, he attended Manhattan College, graduating in 1956 with a bachelor's of science, and Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1960.

{Extraneous Deleted}

"His work was his hobby," Sachs said.

In addition to his son, Sachs is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Manhattan; daughters Carolyn Yuen, of Ridgefield, Conn., and Jennifer Loframento, of Forest Hills, Queens; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Sept. 29 at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan, family said.

JHQ: Cardinal Newman Lecture "No Such Thing as the Internet" 9/9 at 1630

http://manhattan.edu/news/college-hosts-fourth-annual-cardinal-newman-lecture

COLLEGE HOSTS FOURTH ANNUAL CARDINAL NEWMAN LECTURE

On Sept. 9, Manhattan College continues the Newman Lecture series with cultural historian and media scholar Siva Vaidhyanathan, Ph.D.

Siva Vaidhyanathan, Ph.D., cultural historian and media scholar, will present There is No Such Thing as the Internet: Mythologizing and Misunderstanding the Digital Moment at the fourth annual Cardinal Newman Lecture at Manhattan College on Monday, Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m. in Hayden Hall, room 100. The event is free and open to the public.

Vaidhyanathan is currently the Robertson Professor in Media Studies at the University of Virginia (UVA). In 2011, he was appointed chair of UVA’s Department of Media Studies and became a prominent voice of the faculty in the 2012 controversy surrounding the ousting of UVA president Teresa A. Sullivan.

As a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for the Future of the Book, he is also a frequent contributor on media and cultural issues in various periodicals including the Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times Magazine, The Nation and Salon.com. In addition, Vaidhyanathan maintains a blog, www.googlizationofeverything.com.

Hailed as one of the top movers and shakers in the library field, Vaidhyanathan lauded librarians in the March 2002 edition of the Library Journal for being “on the front lines of copyright battles” and “the custodians of our information and cultural commons.” The Chronicle of Higher Education called Vaidhyanathan “one of academe’s best-known scholars of intellectual property and its role in contemporary culture” in 2004. He has also testified as an expert before the U.S. Copyright Office on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The Cardinal Newman Lecture was launched at Manhattan College in 2010 to celebrate Cardinal John Henry Newman’s beatification, which occurred on Sept. 19, 2010, in Birmingham, England, at a ceremony presided over by Pope Benedict XVI. The goal of the lecture series is to reaffirm the significance of the liberal arts as the core of undergraduate education. Cardinal Newman’s The Idea of a University stressed the central place of the liberal arts in the Catholic intellectual tradition, as well as education in the professions.

[JR: Would be nice to have more lead time. And, the inet is! Uber Alles. To quote "The Matrix", "The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it." Kinda like the Sheeple today?  ]

ENDNOTE: No strategic interests in Syria

http://www.lewrockwell.com/2013/08/eric-margolis/remember-us-war-crimes/

Look Before you Leap Mr President!

By Eric Margolis

August 31, 2013

Let’s also recall how North Vietnam was drenched with the toxic Agent Orange, how the resisting Iraq city of Falluja was showered by white phosphorous, how Iraq was permanently contaminated by radioactive depleted uranium. These foul weapons also kill babies.

At least many Americans seem to have learned caution from the campaign of neocon lies that led them into the 2003 Iraq invasion, one of the biggest disasters and shames in US history. Even some usually bellicose Republicans are urging the Nobel Peace prize winner in the White House and his entourage of bloodthirsty liberals to slow his rush to war and consult Congress.

More tellingly, Gen. Colin Powell, who disgraced himself before the world by parroting the Bush administration’s lies about Iraq now also urges caution over Syria.

Powell is right. The US has lost its last two “crusades” in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US has no strategic interests in Syria beyond an obsession to overthrow Iran’s disobedient government.

Sorry, but I'm a little L libertarian pro-life pro-choice anti-war peace kinda fellow.

What say we MYOB?

I've written my letter to "my" political "representatives". (For all the good that will do. They no more "represent" me, than I "represent" the young thin fellow in my own mind!)

This just shows that the faux anti-war protests against Bush were just political Democratic astroturf.

Argh!

Why do Catholics not speak up?

Where is the "Just War" discussion?

It's immoral, ineffective, and inefficient!
