Still Seeking Her Own Match, Marlboro Woman Plans to Find a 'Lid for Every Pot'

*** begin quote ***

While on the psychological rollercoaster that is living with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Shira Klein has been instrumental in helping to match up 23 bone marrow and stem cell donors and recipients.

In spite of battling her own disease for almost three years, or perhaps because of it, Shira Klein’s organization, Smiles4Shira has organized dozens of donor-registration events, at which over 10,000 potential donors have been “swabbed” and registered for the National Marrow Donor Program in just six months. People with leukemia, lymphoma, blood cancer and sickle cell disease now have more than 10,000 extra chances to locate a life-saving match.

Unfortunately, a match has yet to materialize for Klein herself, but she remains fervently optimistic.

“As my husband’s mother was known to say, ‘There is a lid for every pot,’” Klein said. “My lid may be out there, but I, and Smiles4Shira will not stop until every pot has a lid, one Smile at a time.”

Greater love hath no man … then helping others when you have your own problems.

What can I say? Heroic.

Former Newtown High School softball standout Kate Bowen, a junior at Manhattan College, was named the school’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year and was named First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). She also organized a Sandy Hook Tribute Game during the season.

The Manhattan team wore Sandy Hook T-shirts instead of jerseys for the game, and they sold shirts with 26 on the back, representing the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. The team raised $2,000 for the 26 Angels Foundation. Manhattan’s team also recognized the Sandy Hook students and other Newtown residents during a pregame ceremony, and the attendees ran out onto the field with the team during the announcement of the starting lineups. After the National Anthem, both teams and the Sandy Hook children joined in a circle for a 26-second moment of silence. Survivors of the December 14, 2012 attack threw out the ceremonial first pitches before Bowen threw the official first pitch.

JOBIT: Davidson, John Joseph [MC1955 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/lohud/obituary.aspx?n=John-Davidson&pid=165379109#fbLoggedOut

John Joseph Davidson (1933 - 2013)
Obituary
Guest Book

Davidson, John Joseph

John Joseph Davidson, 79, of Congers, NY, passed away on June 16, 2013. John was a devoted, loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and son. He was fiercely dedicated to the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the United States Army. He was a passionate sports fan, fervently supporting his Mets, NY Giants and Knicks until his final days.

John was born in Presbyterian Hospital, Manhattan on October 27, 1933 during the height of the great depression. Nevertheless his can do spirit propelled him to the pursuit of education which would be one of many lifelong passions. He graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School in the Bronx in 1947, Cathedral Prep in Manhattan in 1951, and Manhattan College in 1955.

In July 1956, he was drafted into the US Army where he became a paratrooper, thus starting a lifelong commitment to military service. At the completion of his active duty enlisted service, John joined the US Army Reserve as a 2nd Lieutenant ultimately retiring as a Brigadier General.

After he left the Army, ever tenacious (and sleep-deprived), John worked the midnight shift on the subway, taught school in the afternoon, and obtained an MA in English at Fordham University. Also in 1960, which John cited as his "banner year," John met the love of his life, Kathleen Patricia McNally whom he married in August 1961.

John and Pat's proudest accomplishment was bringing their four children into the world - Kathy Patricia, Siobhan Mary, John Joseph III, and Joseph Dignam Davidson.

John was a life-long educator, always teaching (whether you liked it or not!) inside and outside of the classroom. John served as an English teacher and Assistant Principal dedicating his live to education for over forty years. He most recently served as Assistant Principal of Clarkstown High School North which his four children attended.

Always the consummate student (and multi-tasker), while pursuing his career in education, John earned his PhD in administration at St. John's University in 1974 and graduated from Pace University Law School in 1982. Since his retirement from education, he practiced law and most recently worked for the Town of Clarkstown.

John is reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Pat. He is survived by his children, Kathy Lambret, Siobhan Barra, John J. Davidson III, and Colonel Joseph Dignam Davidson and daughters-in-law, Elizabeth Davidson and Erin Hennessy Davidson. He was a loving grandfather to Patrick Lambret, Alexander Lambret, Regis Lambret, Brian Lambret, Joshua Barra, Robert Barra and the apple of John's eye (and the families') Christianna Davidson. John was a loving brother to Regina Anastasia, Dolores Bennett and her husband James, and brother-in-law to Veronica McNally, Ann Dagher, Thomas McNally and his wife Ann, and Bernadette Puccalla.

Visitation will be held at Higgins Funeral Home, 113 Lake Road East, Congers, NY, today from 7-9pm and Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm for family and friends. A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Thursday, 10am, at St. Paul's Church, 82 Lake Road West, Congers NY, followed by interment at Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's honor to Catholic Charities.

MEMAIL: Schwitter, William F. [MC1941 RIP] feedback

Message from Pam Schwitter ,

Thank you for your lovely message on the online guest book for my father. He loved Manhattan College and two years ago my sister and I took Dad in his wheelchair to the June homecoming alumni reunion Mass and cocktail hour to what was his 70th reunion there even though he was the only member of the class of 1941 present! We had a nice chat with the new president Dr. O'Donnell. Thanks for all your work with the Jasper Jottings and have a great summer. Pam Schwitter

[JR: That's most kind of you to mention. I am always chagrined at the accomplishments of my fellow Jaspers. I have been to reunions and they are always a bittersweet reminder of our own mortality. Thanks for the kudos about Jasper Jottings, but I'm just a "collector". It's your Dad's and my fellow alums that make the news. When my time comes, I hope I can come close to what your Dad achieved. I'll have to get working on those good children now if I'm to catch up. (Not likely in any scenario!) I think that Jaspers always have a great sense of humor. Especially about themselves. That optimism came across in print. Dona Nobis Pacem!]

Spiros hopes to mentor new generation of players with girls soccer camp
By jbcozens on June 17, 2013 in Youth Sports

For Kristin Spiros, it all started at the Head Start Soccer Camp run by her parents in the 1990s — a path that propelled her into the John Jay record book and a four-year Division I career at Manhattan College.

Now, she hopes to do the same for a whole new generation of girl soccer players with her Breakaway Soccer Camp, which will be held June 24-28 at John Jay High School. The camp is for girls entering grades K-12.

”I have had a life fulfilled by soccer in so many ways. It taught me how to work hard, be confident, win and lose,” said Spiros. “If this camp can cause even one girl to fall in love with the game the way I did, then I’ve done my job.”

San Diego’s Salka Looks to Develop Renewable Energy Throughout U.S.
Bruce V. Bigelow
6/21/13

*** begin quote ***

There’s a new renewable energy development firm in town.

Jiddu Tapia, who previously oversaw wind farm development for the U.S. subsidiary of the Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa Technology, plans to pursue similar deals in wind and solar energy for Salka, a business he’s recently established in San Diego to arrange financing, develop, build, and operate utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Salka has formed a strategic partnership with Wofi Capital, which Tapia describes as a private equity firm based in New York and backed by “a family office of ultra-high net worth investors in the Persian Gulf.”

A native of Lima, Peru, Tapia says he immigrated to New York when he was 10, graduated with an engineering degree from Manhattan College, and has worked on renewable energy projects and development for the past decade. Before joining Gamesa in 2010, he spent two years in San Diego working for Eurus Energy America.

There is less than 36 hours to go to this weekend’s 2013 European Athletics Team Championships in the Morton Stadium, Santry, where both Irish teams will be striving to be give it their all and more in their chosen athletic events, in the challenge to retain our coveted 1st League status against stiff European opposition over the two days.

*** and ***

Brian McGovern (Ballinamore AC) will go for Ireland in what promises to be a very exciting Pole Vault competition.

McGovern completed his preparations for this European Athletics Team Championships in clear fashion when he won the pole vault at the USATF East Region championships in New York last weekend. McGovern’s winning vault of 5.30m was just 6cm off his own Irish record of 5.36m, set in Tempe, Arizona, only last March. The young Manhattan College student, (22), will also take his previous experience of this highly competitive team championships from 2009, when he vaulted for Ireland in the event in Izmir, Turkey. Jan Kudlicka (CZE), with a SB of 5.76m, will be one to watch out for.

Good afternoon faculty, guests, friends and family. Class of 2013, congratulations! It’s an honor and my pleasure to be able to share this wonderful occasion with you.

Since I was a young child, sports has been my metaphor for life. I loved everything about it. The idea that you devise a plan, put in the work, and see results is in it’s simplest and purest form the story of human success. If you think about it, success in the athletic field is a result of many parts working together in harmony. You can be in the best shape of your life, and still fail if you’re not mentally strong. And conversely, it doesn’t matter how determined you are to succeed it means nothing if you do not put in the work. Much of my advice to you was reinforced by my experiences in sports.

Be kind to the people that share your past, stay in connected with the people force you to be better. One thing I loved about sports is that unifying element, how it can bring people together. Whether it’s cheering for a team or against the Miami Heat, it can bring people together. When I was injured and side-lined, I had to seek medical back-up. I couldn’t possibly get better by continuing to do what I was doing. A trainer or doctor was my support. You have have that here. Sitting next to you and around you, are your support system – your family, friends, teachers, and administrators. Statistics show that there’s a great likelihood that someone in this room could be a future supreme court justice like bronx native Sonia Sotomayor. Or a Senator, like life long Bronx native Jose Serrano. Odds are that there are a few of you in this room that will be millionaires in a few years. Now if that’s not you, wouldn’t you at least want to be the friend of that millionaire?

In 2007, I was recovering from an injury. There were several important international competitions that year, including the World Championships. I was under a lot of pressure to compete. In my heart, I knew I wasn’t ready, and I wouldn’t be in time. But I did anyways, and ended up making a bad injury worse. That negatively affected my morale, and hurt my spirit. You’re all smart, trust your intution. As you go on to take on the world as young adults, do not let the things you see, or read, or hear convince you that what you know in your heart to be the truth, is anything else. As you go off to college, work or life in general, you responsibility is not just to learn as much as you can, but to teach others as well. Make sure that your reality, your history, thoughts an opinions are factored as part of this country’s solution.

In closing, I’d like to say to you that the only reason I’m standing before you here today is because I failed. More than half of my life was dedicated to reaching one goal – to win just one race, in just one Olympics. I never did. I tried four times, and fell short each time. I failed, but I achieved something else. I am a four time Olympian – and someone pointed out to me that there are fewer four-time Olympians than there are Olympic champions! It’s just not realistic that you will succeed at everything you attempt. But that doesn’t mean you give up, it doesn’t mean that you become less diligent. You will never know the outcome until after it’s all done. Be confident. You’ve been properly prepared to succeed by Validus Prep Academy. Your struggles will make you resilient, hardship builds character and creates leaders. And wherever life’s journeys take you, come back home to your community, and contribute in a way that leaves a meaningful legacy.

Thank you, and best of luck in all your endeavors!

ENDNOTE: Marriage is on the decline

Living in a world where marriage is on the decline

*** begin quote ***

There wasn’t much disagreement on the panel: End welfare payments for single mothers, stop no-fault divorce, remove tax penalties for marriage, and fix “the culture.” From this list the only victory they got was ending welfare as we knew it, which increased the suffering of single mothers and their children but didn’t affect the trajectory of marriage and single motherhood.

So the collapse of marriage continues apace. Since 1980, for every state in every decade the percentage of women who are married has fallen (except Utah in the 1990s):

Sad.

I'm glad I didn't miss my soulmate.

I can't imagine my life without here.

Life didn't work out as either of us thought. But we knew we'd have limited time together and made the most of it.

I remember reading that "interdependence is the joining of two independent people to accomplish more than either could do on their own".

What are we losing, what have we lost, by this cultural shift?

Are the men and women happier without each other?

Or have we cheapened "life" so that it's not as worthwhile as our ancestors?

Marriage as an institution may have developed as a survival mechanism, but it certainly is more than just that.

Sadly, I don't see any change in thinking any time soon.

Too bad for them.
