POSITRACTION: Johaven Gonzales, 8, climbs 100 foot cliff to get help

Climbed a Mountain for Help: Surprising Kid Heroes - mom.me

*** begin quote ***

Johaven Gonzales, 8, was riding in the car with his family on US 60 in Arizona when the car swerved off the road and plunged down a 100-foot cliff. According to ABC15.com, Gonzales was able to escape the car, which had his grandmother, pregnant mom and younger sister inside, by climbing through the driver's side window. He called 9-1-1 before climbing back up the mountain to get help. "I know most adults would not have been able to do what he did," Officer Michael Fink told reporters, adding that if the young boy did not go looking for help, authorities would have most likely not been able to find them.

*** end quote ***

[JR: I've often said and firmly believe that "we" infantilize children. Like they can't do anything, until they turn twenty something with a college degree in partying. My paternal grandmother was married on the German docks at the age of thirteen. (Maybe? Twelve?), traveled the Oregon trail, homesteaded, bore 13 children, was widowed before her last was born. Even in her last years, she was a willful gal! We need to re-examine "education", home schooling, and RESULTS. Sorry, but these a valuable people being dumbed down by the low expectations of society. I blame US! Look at this lad capable strong and heroic. Didn't give up, but pulled up that inner core we all have until it's dulled out of us. I hope I don't have to climb any cliffs; not sure I'm up to that size challenge.]

JEMAIL: Delaney, Gerard M. (MC1975) posits how it coulda been different

John,

This is the root of the problem we have in this country. Starting, I believe, with Mario Cuomo, and continuing thorough the generations, including my fellow Stanner, Andrew Cuomo, we have allowed politicians and academics (and others) to claim to be "personally opposed" to abortion, but vote for or endorse abortion, without being called to account for the scandal they create among the faithful, and in the world. If the first politician to make this claim had been contacted by his local bishop, given seven (or 15, or 30) days to rectify his (or her) position, and then told not to approach the Sacraments (except, of course, for Reconciliation) until they had undergone this metanoia, the world would be much different. Hopefully better, but definitely different.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) reports a need for prayers

Good Evening All,

I have just received news that a very dear friend and fellow Jasper, Thomas Philbin, PhD, ' 61BS, has been diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. Tom will be going in tomorrow, Friday, for a CAT Scan and a PET Scan to see if his Cancer has Metastasized. If that is not the case, then he will be in Hospital up in Boston for about 4 days for an operation to remove the problem Polyps. If it has spread, then Chemo and Radiation would seem to be the expected treatment. I know this good man well and he is up to the challenge but Tom, his wife Susan and their children need our prayers. Please raise the volume as we pray that the Cancer has remained local and that the MDs are able to totally eliminate what there is and have Tom back on his feet quickly and completely recovered. Thank you. God Bless.

[JR: Come on, guys and gals, get those colonoscopies done. How many people have to die unnecessarily because it's a disgusting test to think about, unpleasant to prep for, and can be uncomfortable. Some say painful, but I do mine without the anesthetic so I don't have to hang around to be cleared and have someone drive me. Not that I'm heroic. It killed my grandmother and almost killed my mother. So, I was screened early and rescreened often. It killed Katie Couric's husband. And, when found early is easy cured.  Argh! It's imho insanity not to take this precaution.  ]

In Michigan's upper peninsula, the Wakefield Memorial Building once stood as a grand structure overlooking a lake in Wakefield, an old mining town. The memorial, built in 1924 to commemorate the sacrifices of World War I soldiers, was expansive, including a banquet hall, meeting room and theater.

By the 1950s, the community couldn't afford the upkeep of the building and sold it to a private owner. Over the years, there were attempts to renovate the structure. But it was deemed too expensive and by 2010, the building was demolished.
