POSITRACTION:  Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) on "medical repatriation"

http://keywestlou.com/medical-repatriation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=medical-repatriation

MEDICAL REPATRIATION
Posted on April 27, 2013 by keywestlou

*** begin quote ***

There is a new term out there. Few have heard it. Many will as time goes on.

It is medical repatriation.

Formal sounding. Serious in its implications.

I spoke of medical repatriation on the Key West Lou Legal Hour yesterday. The term involves illegal persons and hospital bills.

The law in the United States is that a hospital is required to care for an injured or sick person till that person is “stabilized.” Not cured. Regardless of ability to pay. Until recently, hospitals have been caring for illegal persons till cured. The result was increased billing to those who had the ability to pay. An unfair but Christian like approach.

Medicaid does not pay the medical bills of those illegally in the United States.

Hospitals have begun to change the format for handling illegals. Now they hire a plane and ship these still sick persons back to their country of origin. The expense of the plane is on the hospital. It is cheaper for a hospital to go this route rather than absorb the balance of a cure bill and rehabilitation.

A recent case involves two Mexican illegals who were working. Their employer provided each with a $100,000 medical policy. The two men had an automobile accident resulting in serious brain injuries. The $100,000 per person was eaten up in less than one week. The hospital flew them back to Mexico on the eleventh day. While both were comatose, a state they had been in since the happening of the accident.

Bad business! Such conduct sets a precedent for a hospital to throw the sick out when the money runs out. I am talking about U.S. citizens who are sick and have no insurance or have insurance that has run out.

I fear that what happens to others today, will happen to us tomorrow.

*** end quote ***

Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) highlights just how barbaric life becomes when we allow the Gooferment, politicians, and bureaucrats to do "charity".

First, a system is setup to control "immigration". (Like the character Red says in The Shawshank Redemption (1994): "I know what *you* think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know?"

Immigration isn't controlled.

(And this little L libertarian thinks that we should welcome any individual who wants to participate in the American dream. I'd hand out green cards at the border like penny candy. The flip side is that there would be no "welfare" for anybody: immigrant, citizen, or corporation! Then we would have plenty of funds for moral, effective, and efficient private charity.)

So, "we" have created an "attractive nuisance" and then "abuse human beings" when they can no longer serve the State!

What's positive about this?

Easy!

If you haven't been so desensitized by the Gosnell Abortion Trial, then surely this should induce you to listen to Key West Lou's show and then put pen to paper or finger to keyboard to express your dismay, confer, or dare I say outrage at how we treat the poor.

Good Samaritan?

Now I understand that Gooferment "health", "health care", "health care insurance", or something else is totally immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. BUT, it should NOT be cruel!

Argh!

Look how easy it would to improve.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) calls out attention to the needs of Wichtendahl, Chuck [MC1961]

Please keep fellow Jasper and good friend of mine, Chuck Wichtendahl ' 61, in your prayers. I just found out that Chuck has suffered an Hemorrhagic Stroke and though he cannot speak, spends his time asleep in ICU, the MDs are giving his wife Peggy and their Family reason to be optimistic. We pray that that is the case as they treat him more fully. At this time I don't know if Chuck's burst vessel is in his brain or between his brain and cranium but we pray for a full recovery. I was in Chuck's Wedding Party. They lived in Yonkers at the time and now live in Patterson, N.Y. A couple of years ago we prayed for his Son, A career Army Man (still active at the time) who died in his sleep while waiting to attend his Son's Graduation from Air Force Boot Camp. Please keep Chuck, Peggy and their family in your prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

He gave a history lesson on how our current economic cycle is similar to that of panic of 1907.

Tara Green, who just graduated from Manhattan College, said she got the gist of Johnson’s lecture, which was filled with charts and graphs and at one point, even included an apology from Johnson for being too technical.

“I wish I could understand a little bit more of what he’s saying,” the 23-year-old from East Greenbush said.

Green, who has a bachelor’s in education, said she’s probably going to delay entering the job market in favor of getting a master’s degree. But that means even more debt, more student loans.

But she walked away with somewhat upbeat about the coming year.

“The whole message is he’s very positive,” Green said. “What he’s saying over all is very positive and it gives me hope.

“It’s tough out there.”

That was Johnson’s final message, which included a warning about the coming years.

“Stay on your toes in 2011 and 2012,” he said, “and be very vigilant.”

Manhattan College Graduates See High Return on Investment According to Survey that Assesses the Value of College Degrees
Wednesday, May 8th 2013

Payscale.com 2013 College Education ROI Ranking lists Manhattan College at 32 out of more than 1,500 institutions nationwide.

Riverdale, NY (PRWEB) May 08, 2013

For the fourth year in a row, Manhattan College ranked in the top 40 for providing graduates with a high return on their investment. In the 2013 Payscale.com College Return on Investment (ROI) ranking, the College is listed at No. 32 among more than 1,500 U.S. colleges and universities.

“At a time when students and families are asking hard — and appropriate — questions about the continuing value of a College education, Manhattan College can point to a long and continuing history of excellent return on investment,” said President Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D. “Our annual presence at the top of this list testifies to our success in combining excellence in the liberal arts with rigorous preparation for the world of work.”

Payscale.com reported that Manhattan College graduates receive a 30-year ROI of more than $1.2 million. The ROI figures are calculated by comparing a college graduate’s earnings, the total cost of a college education, and foregone wages from choosing to attend college. The ranking also cited the College for an impressive 9.3 percent annual ROI when accounting for financial aid.

The data used for the 2013 ranking was collected from alumni who successfully completed Payscale.com’s employee survey. To read more about Payscale.com’s methodology, visit their website at http://bit.ly/16W3yZ6.

School of Engineering Faculty and Student Accomplishments: May 2013

View the accomplishments of the School of Engineering faculty and students during the last few months of the spring semester.

Faculty and Student Accomplishments

Alex Bertuccio ’11,’12, an adjunct instructor in the chemical engineering department, will have his paper “Shale Gas Conversion” published in a special issue of the Journal of Catalysis later this year.
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York will present Brian Krieger ’14 (STV Inc.), a civil engineering major; Alexandra Natchev ’14 (Syska Hennessy Group, Inc.), a civil engineering major; Brendan Page ’14 (Stantec Consulting Services Inc.), a civil engineering major; Matthew Post (Weidlinger Associates, Inc.) ’14, a civil engineering major; and Matthew Sangen (AECOM) ’14, a civil engineering major; each with $2,500 scholarships on May 21.

Chemical engineering majors Joe Aquilina ’15 (team member), Xiaoshen Bai ’13 (vice leader), Sarah Boisvert ’14 (team member), Vincent DeVita ’13 (vice leader and master’s student), Sebastian Garcia ’15 (team member), Eugene Heerschap ’15 (team member), Douglas Montazella ’15 (team member), Demos Pappas ’13 (team leader and master’s student), Gregory Perrier ’15 (team member) and Shiran Zhavian ’13 (vice leader and master’s student) received first price in the material science category of chemical engineering at The New York State Society of Professional Engineers 2013 Engineering EXPO. In addition, Sarah Boisvert ’14 (team leader), Demos Pappas ’13 (vice leader and master’s student) and Gregory Perrier ’15 (vice leader) earned second prize for a water purification technology project presented at the EXPO. Gennaro J. Maffia, Ph.D, professor of chemical engineering, was the adviser on both projects.

Alberto Morgante ’13, a civil engineering major, and Anirban De, Ph.D., P.E., an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, recently traveled to Capitol Hill to participate in “Posters on the Hill.” Sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research, the competition is designed to bring congressional delegates up-to-speed on some of the most cutting-edge federally funded academic projects.

Under the guidance of his adviser De, Morgante presented his latest research on how to build bomb-resistant tunnels in a post-9/11 era. For the past year, both have been building miniature models of underground tunnels and, with the help of explosives specialists, they’ve exposed those models to blasts in order to test their durability. Read more about their research

During their trip to Washington D.C., Morgante and De visited the offices of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY 16th District). In addition, they met with Congressman Bill Owens ’71 (D-NY 21st District) and Congressman Paul D. Tonko (D-NY 20th District) at the poster session.

Along with being a recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Arid Lands Hydraulic Engineering Award, Tim J. Ward, Ph.D., P.E., dean of the School of Engineering, will also be recognized as a fellow of the ASCE’s Environmental and Water Resources Institute at the World Environmental & Water Resources Congress on May 19.

On April 18, Shiran Zhavia, a chemical engineering master’s student, won the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) student poster competition. Zhavia presented her poster “Development of Porous Metal Structures for Artificial Bone Growth” at the ISPE meeting in New Brunswick, N.J.

JNEWS: Herzman, Ronald B. [MC1965] SUNY Geneseo Distinguished Teaching Professor of English

http://thelcn.com/2013/05/10/commencements-begin-saturday-at-suny-geneseo/

GRADUATION
Commencements begin Saturday at SUNY Geneseo
May 10, 2013 by Ben Beagle

*** begin quote ***

Two undergraduate ceremonies are scheduled May 18 in Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena for an estimated 1,200 students.

SUNY Geneseo Distinguished Teaching Professor of English Ronald B. Herzman will deliver the keynote address at both ceremonies, scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The college began doing two undergraduate ceremonies several years ago when the ceremony was moved indoors to the ice arena. The arena can’t accommodate all of the graduates and guests at once, so about half of the graduates walk in the morning and half in the afternoon.

Plans are to move to a single outdoor ceremony when the college’s new stadium is completed.

Herzman, who will address “Creative Recycling,” is among the longest-serving current Geneseo faculty members with 44 years of service. At the morning ceremony, Herzman also will be the mace bearer as Grand Marshal. Distinguished Service Professor of Geological Sciences Richard A. Young will be Grand Marshal for the afternoon ceremony.

“Ron has served as Grand Marshal in previous years, but it is a distinct pleasure to welcome him as our commencement speaker this year,” SUNY Geneseo President Christopher C. Dahl said in a news release.“Ron represents the heart of our teaching and learning enterprise. He is an eminent medievalist, honored nationally for his teaching by the medieval Academy of America, and he also inspires other teachers. At the same time he is able to communicate the joys of his field to general audiences, through popular presentations for The Great Courses series and lectures throughout the country.”

Herzman has served in leadership positions on numerous major committees on campus and was co-director of the college’s Honors Program from 2005-13, succeeding the late Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy Bill Edgar, for whom the program is now named.

“Ron has made a tremendous mark on the life of our academic community for decades,” Dahl said. “This will be my last commencement as president and I am looking forward to hearing his remarks.”

Herzman, a native of Brooklyn, earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Delaware. His undergraduate alma mater conferred an honorary doctorate of humane letters upon him in 1991.

Herzman came to Geneseo in 1969 as an assistant professor of English, was promoted to associate professor in 1978 and full professor in 1983. In 1976, he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named Distinguished Teaching Professor of English in 1989.

Herzman specializes in medieval literature, humanities and the Bible as literature but has a particular passion for Dante, on whom he has published and presented extensively. In 2003, he and Distinguished Teaching Professor of History Bill Cook jointly received the first-ever CARA Award for Excellence in Teaching Medieval Studies from the Medieval Academy of America. The award recognized their long-time collaborative accomplishments as team teachers and partners in research in their field of medieval studies.

Herzman has been involved many years with the National Endowment for the Humanities and was on leave from Geneseo from 1982 to 1985 at the NEH in Washington, D.C., where he created the Seminar for School Teachers Program, a series of summer seminars to help school teachers become better teachers. Herzman was the program’s first program officer, and the NEH continues to ask him to teach the seminars in various parts of the world.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: First-year coach Jesse Darcy brings experience and energy to Lewis Mills

With a 10-3 record so far this season, first year head coach Jesse Darcy has the Lewis Mills Spartans baseball program riding high going into the final stretch of the regular season.

Darcy, who took over a program that finished with a 13-8 record last season, which lost in the second round of the Class M State Tournament to St. Joseph’s High School by the score of 6-0, is a former minor league baseball player and is currently a seventh grade math teacher at Harbor Middle School, who is in his first season as a high school head coach.

He grew up in Levittown, NY and played baseball at Division Avenue High School on Long Island before moving on to Manhattan College to play for the Jaspers.

After a very successful college career, where he was named team co-captain for the 2007 season, he was drafted by the then Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 38th round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft.

“I was released by the Rays after my third season, then I played for the Somerset Patriots,” said Darcy.

Four minor league seasons later, Darcy retired from the game of baseball and became a teacher.

“After my junior year I turned down free agent offers with the Mets and the Rays,” said Darcy. “I wanted to make sure I had a backup plan, I had my student teaching coming up that fall.”

He said he chose the right path.

“It was the toughest decision I ever had to make, and I had to make it on my birthday,” said Darcy. “But it was my best year that year, it was the better choice.”

ENDNOTE: Transfer wealth and power from the outsiders to the insiders

T
he Greatest Wealth Transfer in History
by Bill Bonner
Bill Bonner's Diary

*** begin quote ***

All governments engage in larceny and fraud, using their authority to transfer wealth and power from the outsiders to the insiders. But the clever government does so by deception... while the clumsy one does so with no pretense or excuses.

In the US, for example, the feds deny savers any financial return from their economies under the pretense of "economic stimulus." Wage earners get nothing, while bankers, speculators and zombie grifters are rewarded with ultra low-cost financing, capital gains, bailouts and giveaways.

The scale of this wealth transfer is the greatest in all history. Trillions of dollars are changing hands... But not one voter in 1,000 understands what is happening to him.

*** end quote ***

By messing with the money, the Gooferment is robbing the Sheeple and Clovers blind.

The devaluation of the currency is a silent tax on the poor, those on fixed income (i.e., pensioners), and savers!

It's fraud.

Money is supposed to be a store of value!

Argh!

How stupid are we?
