POSITRACTION: A small village in the DR

Missioners Change Lives – Often Their Own – In D.R.

Teenagers and adults from St. Luke's have been traveling to a small village in the Dominican Republic for more than 10 years; the trips have left their mark.

By Elizabeth McNamara

*** begin quote ***

The expression "mission trip" conjures up images of do-gooders looking to better the lot of poorer people. But these days, people on mission trips are often the seekers, the ones looking for God's grace in a faraway land. Sometimes that's because, quite simply, that grace is easier to see when you are away from the distractions of your everyday life.

So it is that St. Luke's found Mount Transfiguration, an Episcopal camp in El Pedregal, our destination this past February. The trip is part of the religious education of teenagers at St. Luke's.

There are 11 teens (mainly 15 and 16 year olds) and 9 adults, although we are reunited with a fellow St. Luker upon arrival. Heather MacDonald is teaching in the D.R. now, after first traveling here as a teen missioner several years ago. She'd been back a couple times and, after full-time teaching jobs proved elusive in Rhode Island, she decided to sign on to a two-year teaching job in Jarabacoa, the town nearest El Pedregal.

Surprising, because usually the filters are chock full of "stuff" on Sunday mornings.

Perhaps, Google has taken the week end off?

St. John Baptist de la Salle
(1651-1719)

Complete dedication to what he saw as God's will for him dominated the life of John Baptist de la Salle. In 1950, Pope Pius XII named him patron of schoolteachers for his efforts in upgrading school instruction. As a young 17th-century Frenchman, John had everything going for him: scholarly bent, good looks, noble family background, money, refined upbringing. At the early age of 11, he received the tonsure and started preparation for the priesthood, to which he was ordained at 27. He seemed assured then of a life of dignified ease and a high position in the Church.

JEMAIL: Menchise, Louis (MC1987) clarifies on gun violence

Menchise, Louis (MC1987)`
Apr 7

The point I was trying to make is that the 16 year old should have been sure the person in his house was indeed a stranger bent on evil and not his 12 year old brother. If he had armed himself with a knife or a baseball bat, and if he was close enough to the person, he would have used them - perhaps with the same results.

Juridictions differ in the US. When I obtained handguns twenty years ago, NYC (where I live) required me to take a class. I do not know if they still do. I did not have to prove to the licensing agency (the NYPD) that I knew how to operate a handgun. The NYPD simply asks if you have ever had mental health treatment. I doubt they do any checks. If you receive a presecription for certain medications like controlled substances (which require a special prescription - which also have expiration dates - that are tracked by I forget which entity) the NYPD will call you in, and perhaps force you to surrender your guns. The NYPD requires me to have locks on the triggers of my guns, and that they be in a case that is also locked. Many rural areas have juridictions that do not have the manpower to do background checks on gun applicants.

A gun is a very efficient and effective tool for doing harm to individuals. The question has always been, "What if someone's gun(s) are stolen?" and "What if the sane gun owner suddenly becomes insane, and does not go for treatment and receive a prescription for a controlled substance?" There are also no tests for common sense.

The 2nd Amendment ends with the words, "shall not be infringed." The 1st Amendmant has infringments. One cannot yell, "Fire!" in a crowded theater, nor can one distribute child pornography - to cite just two examples. Should the 2nd Amendment be changed? Should there be a Federal gun regulation and licensing agency? Should responsible, sane individuals who want to own guns suffer because of insane or irresponsible people? No one wants innocent people to die from guns, or by any other means.

Louis Menchise

# - # - # - # - #

[JR: We've gone so far beyond "infringe" it's silly. The Gooferment makes laws and they don't enforce them. Zero federal gun crime prosecutions in Chicago! Don't talk to me of new rules, laws, or diktats until the tons that are the books are enforced. Then, maybe we can have a conversation. Argh!]

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) reports Latino Alumni Club

Dear John,

On Tuesday evening the Manhattan College Latino Alumni Club sponsored a presentation by NYPD Deputy Chief Ruben Beltran on the development and use by the Department of various technological tools to help make the City a safer place. His boss, Deputy Police Commissioner, James Onalfo was also present and participated in the discussion as well. It was a very interesting and encouraging to learn how far the Department has come in utilizing modern technology to aide the cop on the street with his day to day duties. I was impressed with what I learned Tuesday evening.

There was an Article in Wednesday's April 10, 2013 Edition of the New York Daily News at page 2, highlighting some of these new techniques.

I have a copy if you need it.

Best,

Subject: Sad News: Michael Bette '59

Dear Friends,

With great sadness, I write to inform you of the death of our dear friend Michael Bette, who died yesterday while visiting campus for a reception honoring scholarship donors. We will be in touch about arrangements as soon as information becomes available, but I wanted to let you know as soon as possible, as you have been among Mike's closest friends and colleagues over the years.

I spoke with several of Mike's children this morning by conference call. While they of course are shocked and deeply saddened, they also said that, if there was one place where Mike would choose to be in his final hour, it would be his beloved Manhattan, and that it is somehow fitting that he was called to God while participating in the life of the College.

He will be sorely missed. I know that we will all be keeping Mary Ann and the entire Bette family in our prayers.

May he rest in peace,

JEMAIL: Moore, Kevin (MC1980) remembers Dr. John Ansbro

Kevin Moore
Apr 11 (2 days ago)

Good Morning,

It was with much sadness that I read of the passing of Dr. John Ansbro in your last issue of Jasper Jottings. Dr. Ansbro was the chairman of the Philosophy Department while I attended Manhattan and even convinced me to minor in philosophy in my sophomore year. He had a keen sense of what we would now call “social justice”. He was working on a book on Dr. Martin Luther King while I was at MC, although I am not sure he ever finished it. He also used to organize “World Hunger Days” in the resident, commuter, and engineering cafeterias once or twice a semester whereby students would give up their breakfast, lunch and/or dinner have the monies allocated by the college to that student to the food service donated to a world hunger organization. I admit it was quite easy for the residents to be a part of this as most of them skipped breakfast (it started way too early) and the pizza at Broadway Joe’s was far, far superior to anything available in the cafeteria for lunch. I was privileged to work with him on many of these projects which hopefully raised some awareness and help some of those less fortunate than we Jaspers. He was a good man with a sly sense of humor. May he rest in peace.

“Victim disarmament is the view that it is somehow better to see a woman raped in an alley and strangled with her own pantyhose, than see her with a gun in her hand.” — T.D. Melrose

I note that this women were denied an "equalizer"; this being the Pepuls Republik of Chick-ago!

Do you think that even the POSSIBILITY of these women having effective tools to defend themselves might have stopped this?

The phrase in popular culture I believe that is operative is: "the witches be crazy"!

Imagine if just one of the women was armed with a modest handgun. Say a nice pink girlie 380!

What would have the headline read?

<the sound of crickets chirping>

Because these young gentlemen would have excused themselves as fast as possible and went how to change shorts.

Or, if they had watched too many Hollywood movies, they'd have been put down like the mad dogs they are.

If we can't have peace, then let's make sure that the battle of the sexes is a battle of equals.

Oh, and when I pass muster, I'll be packing. Us fat old white guy injineers are not up to a physical fight anymore, so I'll be carrying my tool.

As a little L libertarian pro-lifer, I'll do all I can to avoid using it. Sticks 'n' stones will not be tolerated.

Why do "Liberals" fail to trust women to NOT be crazy? I can understand fat old white guy injineers; we're all nuts. But, the nonsense has to stop.
