History & Background
In 1967, the Baltimore Four poured blood on a few hundred A-1
draft files and waited peacefully to be arrested. They hoped not
only to spare a few lives by denying the Selective Service system
recruits, but also to start a discussion about the morality of war
and conscription and to inspire others to take similar action.
The following year, the Catonsville Nine, Milwaukee 14, and D.C.
Nine followed up with similar actions carried out by groups of
priests, nuns, and their friends. Their tactics and goals moved
beyond symbolic action; in doing so they subjected themselves to
serious prison sentences. They sought to put the war on trial as
they were being tried for their acts of resistance.
Hundreds more soon joined in as a flood of similar actions
followed throughout the early 1970s. Their tactics changed:
Symbolic action gave way to concerted efforts to disrupt the
Selective Service system, state by state. Activists stopped
waiting around to be arrested and started trying to destroy as
many induction files as possible and evade capture. Many of them
took part in multiple actions. Many ended up serving lengthy
prison terms.
Actions like the Catonsville Nine received massive media
attention, others went uncovered by the press and unreported or
even downplayed by government officials. But the government took
notice and Hoover's FBI set out to infiltrate the movement and
nullify it as it did the Black Panthers, Weather Underground, and
other organizations. By the mid-1970s it seemed the government had
succeeded.
But these actions and activists inspired untold numbers of people
around the world. And many of the so-called Catholic Left or Ultra
Resistance activists have continued the struggle and are working
toward a variety of causes today.

Interesting that there is NO anti-war movement when a D is in the
White House. Well, no movement other than the Quakers,
Libertarians, and some pro-lifers. But it's minuscule in

"volunteer", it's fine! Blessed are the peacemakers? Anyone
remember the "Just War" doctrine?]

Passed away peacefully on March 1st, 2013 with his son Stanley and his wife Carol by his side.
Bill was born in New York on October 17th, 1942. He graduated from Manhattan College with a BA in Business and went on to get an MBA. In 1966 he joined the Air Force and quickly became Base Education Officer, later retiring at the rank of Captain. He returned to New York in 1970 and started his career with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. In 1972, he met Carol Ann, and they married that same year. Soon after, Bill accepted a position with American Express and relocated to Frankfurt, Germany. While in Germany, Bill and Carol became parents to Stanley. American Express brought them to Phoenix for the first time. They moved to Texas with Miller Brewing, Pennsylvania with Hershey Foods, Chicago with Borg Warner and Columbus with The Ohio State University.
Bill followed his heart in retirement and he and Carol settled in Paradise Valley. While in retirement all of his energy went into volunteering. Some of the volunteer activities he enjoyed working at include: the dog shelter, St. Mary's Food Bank, Salvation Army, Franciscan Renewal Center, National Guard job fair, 3 Day Walk, and the PV Car Show. But his real passion was being a Paradise Valley Volunteer Police Officer where he made strong friendships.
Bill was a man who made you laugh. He was loving, giving, and a friend to all. He was an unbelievable husband, father, and grandfather. His faith was strong and his last thoughts were of family and friends who have gone before him. He was ready to meet them all again with God by his side. He is going to watch over his wife Carol, son Stanley, grandson Patrick and daughter-in-law Kerry.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 9am, March 19th at the Franciscan Renewal Center, 5802 E. Lin
coln Drive. Graveside Service will follow at 11am at the National Memorial Cemetery of AZ, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road followed by a luncheon at the Franciscan Renewal Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley , 1510 E. Flower St., Phx., AZ 85014.

Kieran M. Devery, Sr. Naples, FL
Kieran M. Devery, Sr., 101, of Naples passed away March 16, 2013. He had been a resident of Naples since 2003, having moved from Nashua, NH.
Kieran was a graduate of Manhattan College, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1933 and a master's degree in 1934 before beginning his career as a civil engineer. While in Naples, he was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church parish.
Kieran is survived by his son, Kieran (Carol) Devery, Jr.; his daughter, Jeanne Murphy; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ottilie in 1995; and his sonin-law, Paul Murphy.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. Inurnment will be private.

As it turns out, a document which has recently surfaced from the Park collection dating back to August of 1792, offers a glimpse into the final days of the fabled Ancien Régime. In essence the document, written in French and signed by Louis as well as the Minister of the Marine, is a ship’s passport, detailing that it has permission to fly French colors and sail to and from particular ports. The ship Diligente in this case is given permission to sail out of Treguier in Brittany “to engage in the coastal carrying trade for one year from the visa date.” (Jeff Horn)
The document signifies a break in existing contracts for the ship, which one scholar has explained is the result of the April, 1792 declaration of war. According to Jeff Horn of Manhattan College, “Given common practice, it probably led to a transfer of ownership to an American to operate as neutral shipping and avoid confiscation.”

LAKEWOOD – RONALD G. CALABRO died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at home surrounded by his family.
He was 82. Born in Bronx, NY, he and his wife Lee resided in White Plains, NY, New Fairfield and Greenwich, CT and Bayville, NJ before settling at Harrogate in Lakewood 6 years ago.
Prior to retiring in 1994, he was self-employed as a CPA, having received his Bachelor's Degree from Manhattan College and his Master's Degree from Pace University.
He was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather and will live in our hearts forever. Surviving is his loving wife of 60 years, Lee; 6 children: Lenora Hilleary and her husband Brian of Stafford, VA, Ronald and his wife Susan of Hawthorne, NY, Denise McGeary of Milford, CT, John and his wife Marie of New Canaan, CT, Christopher and his wife Susan of Cincinnati, OH, and Robert and his wife Andrea of Newtown Square, PA; 12 grandchildren: Keri, Robert, Jennifer, Lisa, Christopher, Stephen, Nicholas, Daniel, John, Amanda, Olivia and Melissa; and a great-grandson, Jason.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 8:15AM at D'Elia Funeral Home, Rte. 70 & Vermont Ave., Lakewood, followed by a 9:15AM Mass of Christian burial at St. Luke's RC Church, Toms River. Joseph Angelo Cosentino, 94, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away at 12:35 p.m., March 16, 2013, in Bedford, Ind.
Born Nov. 11, 1918, in Pittston, he was a son of Vincenzo "James" and Carolina (Cassaro) Cosentino. He married Florence Gloria Mecadon on Aug. 30, 1947, and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1993. He was the loving father of Angela Cosentino, Mitchell, Ind.
Joseph "Cazy" served in World War II as a petty officer 2nd class electrician's mate in the Pacific Theater. He retired from the Department of the Navy as a civil engineer after 35 years of federal service. He was a graduate of Pittston High School, attended Manhattan College, New York City, and was a graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology, Philadelphia, with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He held a professional engineering license, was a member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Florida, and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Joseph is survived by his immediate family daughter, Angela Cosentino, Mitchell, Ind.; adopted daughter, Phillis Green; friend, Bonnie Green; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Norma Cassio, South Plainfield, N.J., Mrs. Rita Mecadon, Pittston, Mrs. Katherine Mecadon, Pittston; 15 nieces and nephews and two sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 46 years, Florence; and a sister.
Funeral services will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William St., Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Marello Parish, William Street, Pittston. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was a resident at The Cliffs, West Orange, N.J., since 2011. The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, N.J. 07029 on Monday, March 25, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, N.J., at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Joe was born in Harrison, N.J., on July 11, 1914, the son of Anthony and Carolina (D'Amico) Cundari. He was a graduate of Holy Cross Grammar School (1928) and Seton Hall High School (1932). He earned a bachelor's degree (1936) and master's degree (1938) in civil engineering from Manhattan College.
He worked in the Ford Motor Company foreign export department (1936 to 1939) and as a structural steel designer with Hugh A. Kelly Associates, Jersey City, N.J. (1939 to 1941), in the design of plans for federal housing projects in Harrison; Jersey City, N.J.; Burlington, N.J., and Stratford, Conn. During World War II (1941 to 1945), Joe was a master sergeant in the Army's 341st Engineer Regiment. He was chief of engineering operations and supervised construction of the Alaska Military Highway between Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson in British Columbia (1943). He oversaw the reconstruction of railroad bridges in France, Belgium, and Germany (1944 to 1945). In addition to many military service medals, he was also awarded the Legion of Merit Medal for his services.
Joe joined the Wigton-Abbot Corporation of Plainfield, N.J., as assistant construction manager in 1946 and in 1982 became construction manager. Also in March 1946, he was appointed town engineer by Harrison Mayor Frank Rodgers. For 56 years, until his retirement in May 2002, he supervised all major public projects, which included the Stickel Bridge, John F. Kennedy Stadium, Harrison Recreation Center, Harrison High School, the addition to Lincoln School, fire headquarters, public library, renovation of the Senior Citizens Center, the additions of hundreds of family homes on former industrial sites, the reconstruction of the Bridge Street and Jackson Street bridges, demolition of the PSE&G gas container, and construction of recreation facilities such as playgrounds, basketball courts, mini soccer field and tennis courts. He was responsible for the plans and specifications for the construction of new water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, street paving, fire alarm and traffic signals. He served as zoning board officer (1948) and planning board officer (1977) until his retirement. In retrospect, during his 56 years of service, he oversaw the development of all of Harrison's town improvements.
In 1990 Joe was appointed to the board of trustees for Hudson County Community College, Jersey City, N.J. In 1998 he was named trustee emeritus and was very involved in fundraising and establishing scholarships for students. In 1999, in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions, a newly opened wing of the college was dedicated as the Joseph A. Cundari Center.
Joe's civic service also included being named a vice president of the West Hudson Hospital Association (1958 to 1962) and vice president of the Harrison Board of Education (1991 to 1996). In November 1999, the Christopher Columbus Foundation Day honored Joe as an outstanding citizen. He was also recognized in 2003 and again in 2011 by Mayor Ray McDonough as Harrison's Outstanding Senior Citizen. On April 28, 2011, the Harrison Board of Education voted to name the tennis courts at Harrison High School "The Joseph A. Cundari Tennis Courts" to serve as a lasting reminder for everyone of the unstinting dedication of a venerable Harrisonian.
In his personal life, Joe enjoyed attending theatrical productions and operas and was an accomplished pianist. He had an avid interest in photography and oil painting.
He was a member of the K of C Our Lady of Grace Council No. 402, the Sgt. Williams A. Sawelson V.F.W. Post No. 340, the Holy Cross Church Holy Name Society, and many professional engineering societies.
Tennis was a major interest in his life, initially as a player and founder of the Harcy Tennis Club, and then as a lifetime member of the Arlington Players Tennis Club, where he served in many capacities for over 60 years. He was also a major sponsor of the New Jersey State Tennis Championship Tournament for 40 years.
Joe was very dedicated to his family, always being present at every major event in the lives of his family. No matter the time or distances, he was always present in happy and sad occasions. He was "Uncle Joe" to one and all.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Carolina Cundari; his brother, Dominic, and his sisters, Catherine and Vincentine. Survivors include his brother, James P. (Johanna) Cundari, Sandusky, Ohio; his nephews, Anthony Cundari, Norwalk, Ohio, and Joseph Cundari, Sandusky, Ohio; his nieces, Johanna Powers, Sandusky, Ohio; Maria Horvath, Oxford, Mich., and Carolyn Williams Sardella, Kearny, N.J., and many grand-nephews and -nieces, great-grand nephews and -nieces, cousins, and his faithful companion of over 30 years, Rena Stoll.
Memorial contributions in memory of Joe may be given to Holy Cross Church, Harrison, N.J.; Hudson County Community College, Jersey City, N.J.; the Arlington Players Club, Kearny, N.J., or to one's favorite charity. The dedicated loyal citizen, soldier and family man now rests in peace in God's hands. What Joe accomplished in his life will live on for many years to come.

Ottomar Rudolf was born in Pforzeim, Germany, near the Black Forest, and grew to maturity in Ulm. At age 18, he left the ruins of war-torn Germany and sailed to New York, where he studied at Manhattan College, earning a B.A. in philosophy. He became an instructor of German at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges in Pennsylvania and at St. Joseph College in Philadelphia.
Drafted at the time of the Korean War, he went on to study at Heidelberg University and later returned to Philadelphia to finish his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in Germanic languages and literature. In 1963, he was hired at Reed College as Assistant Professor of German and Humanities. He also served as a Fulbright visiting professor of German at Freiburg University in Germany. At Reed, he was the long-standing chair of the German Department, where he started the Munich Junior Year Program and the German Foreign Language Scholar Program.
His academic specialty was the Surm and Drang period of eighteenth-century German literature, and he published books and articles on the dramatist and writer J.M.R. Lenz. He retired from Reed as Emeritus Professor in 1998. A quotation from the "Book of Faculty" published at Reed in 1995 and featuring comments from anonymous students captures his teaching style: "Herr Professor Doktor Rudolf never ceases to amaze me. Each of his classes that I went to last semester (German 381, "Aufklarung, Sturm und Drang") made me more and more excited about German literature; he has a love for his subject that I have not seen in many other professors. His lectures are never boring, and it's even better when he spontaneously bursts into song! Ottomar Rudolf is a great, great man. Take his classes. You will love him."
Among other activities, he served as coach to the Reed soccer team and for several years chaired Reed's Cultural Affairs Board. He started and for 25 years directed the Reed Sunday Music Matinees, taught in the Reed MALS program and the Reed Elderhostel, lectured for the Reed Women's Series and at the Portland Art Museum, and served on the Board of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. He was the Executive Producer of the highly acclaimed film, "RoseLand," served as a consultant to the Portland Brewing Company, and in 1989 was awarded the medal of honor, the Bundesverdienstkreuz, 1. Klasse, by the President of Germany for his services as an outstanding cultural ambassador to the United States.
In 2012, he published his personal story, "I Remember: A Boy's Years in Nazi Germany." He is survived by his wife, Catherine Rudolf; two children, Wolfgang Rudolf and Gabrielle Rudolf; and grandchildren, Kempton Rudolf and Marley Peck. A memorial service will be held in the Reed College Chapel, Eliot Hall, at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the German Department of Reed College for maintenance of the culture and tradition of the German House.

Good Evening All,I have an update for you on our Niece, Doreen. We saw she and her mother on Sunday, 3/10/13, at Melissa's Bridal Shower and although she was really not doing all that well she wanted to be part of that wonderful and fun occasion. It was very special to see her. She has been taken off the Hormone treatment regimen and placed on Chemo because the Hormone treatments as they attack one part of the Cancer, they give rise to another. She is dealing with this change as she has with everything else. Doreen soldiers on. I have not seen a tougher candidate for Special Forces. Doreen has a walking Morphine Pack that helps and the love and support from her Mom, Eileen, her two Sons, Daughter and Husband has been something to behold. Please Keep Doreen and her family in your prayers as we pray for the best for Doreen. In her life , Hope continues to be a special grace and she continues to make every day special. Thank you. A soldier who graduated from Queensbury High School was among those wounded in a March 11 attack in eastern Afghanistan, the Glens Falls Post-Star reports. Two soldiers were killed and nine others wounded in that attack, The Associated Press reported.
Army Spc. Tyler DeVaney, a 2006 graduate of Queensbury High School, was preparing to go on patrol with members of his combat team in the Jalrayz District in eastern Afghanistan that morning, according to the Post-Star. A man in an Afghan National Security Forces uniform climbed on a truck and started firing a machine gun at the soldiers.
"He was very, very lucky," DeVaney's father, Jack, told the Post-Star by telephone Wednesday from Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart, Ga., where his son is listed in good condition with bullet wounds to his upper body, thigh and abdomen. "Good luck doesn't even begin to describe it. It's an absolute miracle he wasn't injured more seriously. The doctors said he's going to be OK, but it's going to take a lot of hard work."
Hospital officials said they hoped DeVaney, who is stationed at the Georgia base, will be discharged soon.
Killed were Army Staff Sgt. Rex L. Schad, 26, of Edmond, Okla., and Capt. Andrew M. Pedersen-Keel, 28, of South Miami, Fla.
The DeVaney family lived in Queensbury until moving to Coppell, Texas, slightly more than a year ago.
DeVaney played baseball at Queensbury, according to his father, and graduated from Manhattan College.
