2013-Feb-10JOBIT: Bohan, Francis Matthew [MC1959 RIP]http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/oleantimesherald/obituary.aspx?n=francis-matthew-bohan&pid=162919914&eid=sp_ommatchDr. Francis Matthew Bohan Obituary OLEAN - Francis Matthew Bohan, M.D., died peacefully at home Monday (Feb. 4, 2013) after a long illness. He was the older son of Francis A. Bohan and Anne Necas Bohan. Born and raised in New York City, he was educated by the Christian Brothers, attending Good Shepherd Grade School, Manhattan Prep and Manhattan College and received those schools' highest honors. Dr. Bohan went on to graduate from Cornell University Medical College, where he was selected for membership in the AOA Honor Society. Always interested in general surgery, he completed his training at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he was the chief surgical resident. After residency, he served in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Major and was the Chief Surgeon and Head of Professional Services at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. Following his tour of duty, Frank moved his young family to Olean in 1970, where he joined the Olean Medical Group and practiced general surgery for 31 years. He performed surgery at both of the Olean hospitals and was admired and respected by patients, doctors, nurses and staff. Many of these same people helped him in the sometimes difficult phases of his illness when they reached out to him in friendship. At various times throughout his career, Dr. Bohan had many leadership roles on the medical staffs of St. Francis and Olean General hospitals. At St. Francis Hospital, he had served as Chief of Surgery, Chief of Emergency Services and was a member of the Board of Trustees. He also was president of the medical staff and Chief of Staff at Olean General Hospital, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees and chairing the board's executive committee. During the formative years of the Cattaraugus County EMT training programs, he was a driving force in creating a single emergency service for both Olean hospitals and having full-time, in-house emergency room physicians to better serve the patients of this community. He was very involved in the eventual merger of the Olean General and St. Francis hospitals. At the Olean Medical Group, Frank served as member and chairman of the executive committee for many years. Frank was a member of many professional societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Cattaraugus County Medical Society and the New York State Society of General Surgeons. Deeply committed to community service, he was active - particularly after his retirement from medicine - with the Greater Olean Association of Churches, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, Interfaith Caregivers, Allegany River Valley Trail and the Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County. In 2003, Frank was honored with the YMCA Salute to Olean Award. He enthusiastically supported Christmas in April and was active at St. John's Church as a lector, a member of the outdoor decorating and landscaping committees, a Pre Cana program facilitator and a worker at the Festa Italiana. Frank was honored for his surgical care and kindness to many members of the Seneca Nation, when they awarded him an honorary membership in the Hawk Clan. The Seneca name given to him was "da yah dae tah," meaning "He Cuts People." Frank relished his time outdoors and was frequently seen enjoying Olean's four seasons, whether it was hiking with his Briard dog, cross country or downhill skiing, or sailing on Cuba Lake. His major indoor hobbies were working on his elaborate train setup and building model ships. What better way to pass the time while "on-call?" Frank is survived by his sons, James and Edward of Harrisburg, Pa., and Matthew (Liesl) of Lansing, Mich.; grandchildren, Kelly and Timothy of Lansing; a brother, Joseph (Patricia) of Olean; a niece and nephew; and several cousins. Of great comfort to Frank and his family, he is also survived by a very special friend, Maureen Sheahan. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Martha Yurick Bohan. Visitation will be held at Letro-McIntosh Spink Funeral Home, 646 E. State St., Olean, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A funeral Mass will be held at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 931 N. Union St., Olean, on Saturday (Feb. 9, 2013) at 10 a.m. The Rev. Edward Sheedy, pastor, will celebrate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to St. John's Church, 931 N. Union St., Olean, NY 14760. 2013-Feb-10JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) reports campus crime in '72Dear f. John,On one of my last trips walking the path between the Fanny Farmer factory and the main campus - after classes had ended my senior year Spring '72, I was mugged and robbed. Two players, my recollection is that they displayed a knife - I thought about trying to run but decided not to test my speed against the two of them.... After the deed was done I ran up the the security booth, told the guard on duty what had just happened - his response ? "No, foolin..." I think they called the local precinct, eventually a car came, we drove around a bit, looking unsuccessfully for the perps - and that was the end of that. So I'm for some security cameras and a call box on inter-campus walkways... I'm a Chaminade grad (about 20 years before Father James). I can authoritatively report that his term as President ended a year or two ago at his request, though he is still teaching at the school. Also, I don't ever recall reading of an MC connection, though I don't know for sure... Mike Toner Buffalo, NY BEE '72 [JR: You're right not to run. Too bad in that day and age, you weren't allowed to defend yourself. As far as the reports, I always cite the source because I know it has to be wrong sometimes. 2013-Feb-10JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) condemns capitalism for plastic in the oceanDear Jasper JohnIn a bizarre coincidence I read your article toasting the washing machine as the greatest invention just a day after reading an article saying it may be the worst invention ever to afflict mankind. As you may or may not know our oceans are being polluted by plastic particles on a massive scale, threatening our food chain and ultimately our way of life. ( see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2136334/Scientists-warn-far-plastic-waste-previously-estimated-deeper-ocean.html#axzz2K58K9fcO) excerpt below) Guess which of our many earth unfriendly machines is seen as the main culprit in this case? Of course it is the washing machine as described in http://news.discovery.com/earth/global-warming/washing-machine-pollutes-111024.htm "THE GIST - While synthetic fabrics are washed they shed bits of plastic that can end up in the oceans. - Manufacturers are not required to test fabrics for their environmental impact. - More than 65 percent of plastic in the ocean is in bits that are less than a millimeter thick. Scientists have found an unexpected source for the rising load of tiny plastic bits in the oceans: Washing machines. When you wash fleece jackets, polypro running shirts and other synthetic fabrics, a new study found, miniscule threads of plastic seep through filters and escape into the environment. Marine microplastics can penetrate the cells of even the tiniest organisms, raising all sorts of health concerns for both sea creatures and the people that eat them." I know you libertarians tend to be unconcerned about the environment and think capitalism produces what is best for us even or maybe especially when the capitalists are driven by greed, But remember you you do live on the same earth as the rest of us. I suggest you modify your views- even libertarians can not live amidst poison Sincerely yours, Donald M Stebbins BS 1961 Stebbins, Donald M. (MC1961) [JR: Ahhh, Jasper Stebbins, long time no hear from you. Thought you'd given up. I don't think that "capitalism" is the be all and end all. But you have to admit it has a pretty good track record. If I'm worried about something, its Big Gooferment allowing Big Pharma to put all sorts of drugs into the ecosystem. If consumers become aware of an issue, they change their buying habits in an assessment of what is best for them, makes them the happiest, and gives them more bang for the buck. Then the "greedy capitalists" bust butt to make it so. Is the system perfect, far from it. But you have to admit, it has raised the standard of living anywhere that Gooferment didn't interfere. If "plastic" is a serious problem, the invisible hand of the marketplace will fix it faster than any Gooferment diktat. I'm sure Whirlpool has a machine with a better filter if it can convince people to buy it. Even if Whirlpool doesn't and people buying a washing machine ask "How does it rate on the Stebbins plastic filtering test?", then the next model will have that feature. Lost sales are motivation to a capitalist. Note, I am not tailing about the "crony capitalism" we practicing now in the USA! ] # - # - # - # - # 2013-Feb-10 @ 09:54 |

2013-Feb-10JOBIT: Stack, Robert J. [MC???? RIP]http://obits.syracuse.com/obituaries/syracuse/obituary.aspx?n=Robert-Stack&pid=162951660Robert J. Stack Obituary Robert J. Stack, D.V.M., left us on Friday February 8, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, to be reunited with his beloved wife, Rosemary who he greatly missed for the last four years. He was, in the truest sense of the word, a good and decent man who led a full and purposeful life. He will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren and by all who knew and loved him. Robert was born on June 29, 1923 in Syracuse, New York. After graduating from Manhattan College he served a three year tour of duty in the Air Force before entering Cornell Veterinary College. Upon graduating from Cornell in 1950, Robert joined his father John in the veterinary practice known as the Stack Veterinary Hospital. The practice was originally located on Bellevue Avenue in Syracuse, New York, but later re-located to Velasko Road, in the Town of Onondaga where it continues today. Two of Robert's sons, R. Michael and Daniel continued the family tradition of practicing Veterinary Medicine and the Stack Veterinary Hospital recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, something Robert was extraordinary proud of. Long after his retirement, his many clients continued to fondly remember his years of dedicated service to their pets. Robert was a past president of the Central New York Veterinary Association and a long time member of Bellevue Country Club. Robert was, however, most proud of all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His life was centered around his family. It was a life filled with much love, laughter and compassion. He profoundly touched and shaped the lives of his eight children and was always there to guide them through the difficult times in their lives. Robert is survived by his eight children, R. Michael (Charlene), John, Gerald (Barbara), Kevin, Colleen, Daniel (Julia), Mary Kay (John) and Rosemary, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, John and William as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Robert taught his children many lessons in life, about love, about having a fierce loyalty to one's family and the need for toughness in the face of adversity. In the end, he also taught us that death cannot destroy the dignity of a dignified man. Calling hours will be held Tuesday 4-7 p.m at the Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. A mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday February 13 10 a.m at Most Holy Rosary. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Dewitt. 2013-Feb-16ENDNOTE: and the Clovers are surprised when it doesn't work out?http://dailyreckoning.com/revolving-zombies/Revolving Zombies » Bill Bonner discusses the corruption in the US government, referencing Elizabeth Fowler, a lobbyist for Wellpoint Insurance, and the shaping of US health care policy. # - # - # and the Clovers are surprised when it doesn't work out? Sorry, but it's "crony capitalism" at its worst. Argh! If the Congress didn't assume unConstutional powers to: (1) reward their friends; (2) punish their enemies; and (3) feather their own nests!
