BRONX, N.Y. - It was Chamber of Commerce weather Sunday afternoon in Riverdale, at least if you were trying to promote some kind of bizarre Dickensian paradise. Joseph Tito, 88
Staten Island Advance By Staten Island Advance
on December 15, 2012 at 9:04 AM, updated December 15, 2012 at 9:06 AM

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Remembered as a loving uncle with a good sense of humor, Joseph C. Tito, 88, died Tuesday in New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton.

He was born in the Bronx to parents who hailed from Naples, Italy, and was a toddler when he was brought to New Brighton, where he was raised with seven siblings.

Mr. Tito graduated from Curtis High School, and attended Manhattan College, where he played varsity basketball in 1941 and 1942, and was team co-captain in 1942.

His education was interrupted by World War II, however, and he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, seeing action in Italy.

After his military service, Mr. Tito studied at and graduated from Wagner College, where he was on the varsity basketball team in 1946.

First employed as a school teacher, he then worked for decades as a salesman at Sears, initially in Queens and then on Staten Island. He retired from Sears in the 1980s.

"He always quoted a joke, especially from his favorite comedians like Sid Caesar and Jackie Gleason," said his nephew, Daniel Tito. "He enjoyed spending Christmas and other holidays with his 15 nephews and nieces."

A sports enthusiast in his younger years, Mr. Tito enjoyed swimming and golf, in addition to basketball. His nickname was "Jumping Joe," a tribute to his skills on the court.

Vegetable gardening in his backyard was another hobby.

Mr. Tito was a longtime member of the North Shore Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Halloran Memorial Chapter, Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral will be Monday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, both West Brighton. Burial will follow in Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island.

[JR: Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. And, imho, WW2 interrupted many plans. A good many who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities.]

MNEWS: Finding a Jasper connection in the strangest place … a bar! Who'da thunk?

It’s 30 years and counting for Quincy’s

One of RP’s longest-running businesses celebrates anniversary Dec. 8

Greece native Yiannis Gatzios, the owner of Quincy's Pub & Cafe in Rohnert Park since 2001, has been with the establishment since 1983 when it was owned by John Montero.

By Dave Williams December 7, 2012 12:00 am

Customers, bartenders, cooks and servers have come and gone since Quincy’s Pub & Café opened its doors in 1982, but one constant has been the presence of Yiannis Gatzios. In fact, some couples have met, married and split up at Quincy’s during his time.

Gatzios started working as a bar-back at Quincy’s in 1983 under original owner John Montero. Eventually, he became a bartender and then the pub’s manager before buying the establishment from Randy Yaple in 2001. Since the purchase, Quincy’s has been a labor of love for Gatzios.

“I’ve always loved this bar,” he said. “I’ve spent so much of my life here. And what are you going to do after 17-18 years in one job…start over from scratch? The opportunity to buy the bar came up, and I wanted the bar to continue the way it was rather than having someone buy the place who probably had never been in here before.”

Living the dream

His story is the classic tale of a man immigrating to the United States and obtaining the American dream. The native of Greece (south of Athens) came to the United States in 1979 and attended Manhattan College in New York City. He transferred to Sonoma State University a year and a half later and began working as a server at The Villa restaurant in Santa Rosa. Subsequently, he made his way to Quincy’s and has been there ever since.

He graduated from SSU, where he met his wife of 27 years, Cathryn, in 1986. He also has a daughter, Katia, who currently is attending the University of Redlands in Southern California.

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has another prayer request

Good Evening,

Joe Quinn asks us to pray for Alejandro Camona who died last night. Alejandro, earlier this week, suffered severe burns in a fire. Please keep Alejandro and his family in your prayers as we pray for the repose of his soul. God has called him to his side. Thank you. God Bless.

Phil Colon

Johnny Football got the Heisman and Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o got the shaft -- How on earth did Heisman voters pick Manziel over Notre Dame legend?

*** begin quote ***

Unfortunately, in the flash and glitter and twitter world we live in a solid performance, inspiration and teamwork counts for little when you can watch a guy with a cute nickname avoid the sack against big ‘ol ‘Bama.

Coach Kelly of Notre Dame is right, the Heisman is a joke after picking Manziel as against Te’o.

While the Irish Central is always "on the payroll" as an Irish cheerleader, I do think they have hit of a great description of today's culture: "Glitter and Twitter". Image over substance. Style over achievement. And, "what have you done for me lately" as "opposed to laying the ground for a reliable contribution over the long haul".

Argh!

No wonder the Chinese are going to displace us. It that 50 year view point.

And, I have no idea how to change it.

Sorry, but what do you expect from a fat old white guy injineer.
