POSITRACTION: What's 'Vegetative'?

'Vegetative' patient gives clear responses, doctor reports
CWN - November 15, 2012

*** begin quote ***

A British man who was said to be in a “vegetative state” after a traumatic accident 12 years ago has shown clear evidence of understanding, a researcher has announced.

*** and ***

The finding should prompt new questions about the “vegetative” diagnosis, and about decisions to terminate care for, or remove vital organs from, patients who are diagnosed as unresponsive.

*** end quote ***

Seems like our feeble human understanding of when life begins and death ends it. Humans have such big ego; we don't know what we don't know. Argh! Perhaps, this might increase our understanding.

Leonard "Gene" Leedy

BELLVILLE: Ability without dependability has no value. Gene Leedy was a dependable man. It was his great sense of dependability that gave Gene Leedy his worth. He was a man committed to his family and dependably served his country, church and community.

Gene went to be with the Lord Friday, November 23, 2012 from Hospice of North Central Ohio in Ashland. He was 89.

A dependable member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he formerly served the church as youth group leader and usher. Constantly busy, Gene enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was active with his card club for nearly 60 years, and enjoyed an evening playing pinochle, poker or euchre whenever and wherever he could.

Gene will be remembered for his constant love and dependable support of his family that includes his wife Geraldine "Gerri" (Clever) Leedy; a son and daughter-in-law Steve & Laurie Leedy of Bellville; a daughter and son-in-law Becky & Al Szymanski of Medina; grandchildren Lane Leedy of Bellville, Allyson Leedy of Galion, Ryan Leedy of Bellville, Lauren Szymanski of Chicago, Philip Szymanski of Columbus and Bethany Szymanski of Kent; a sister and brother-in-law Marian & Clyde Bowman of Bellville; and a brother-in-law Lloyd Hall of Bellville.

[JR: Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. And, imho, WW2 interrupted many plans. A good many who went never came back and maybe those that did had new priorities.]

Good Afternoon All,

Mike McEneney asks for our prayers for a good friend of his (a Deacon), Neil Manning. Neil suffered a Stroke and is in ICU in Scottsdale, AZ. His brain has been swelling which required the removal of a portion of his skull to relieve the pressure. Neil attended Manhattan College for a few semesters before joining the U.S. Navy and later completing his studies at NYU. Please Neil and his family in your prayers as we pray for a complete recovery and a safe return home.

I also ask for your prayers for a fellow parishioner and friend of ours down here in Delaware. Veronica informed us that her Brother, Francis, will be going in for Open Heart Surgery as soon as the MDs can organize it. The MDs are anxious to get him into surgery. Please keep Francis, Veronica and their family in your prayers as we pray that the hands of the MDs as they perform their surgery are guided by God's Hand. Thank you. God Bless.

How can a Catholic Institution take Christ out of Christmas?

From a disappointed alumni.

Neil T. O’Sullivan 1990

Maybe the Labor Department is correct and it's no longer "catholic".

BTW you're sending this to the original Ebenezer fan. "Bahh Humbug" is my personal seasonal greeting. Commercialized, De-Christ-ified, de-personalized, and has just been an excuse to eat to much, drink to much, and skip work to much. TV glorifies relatives getting together. But I'm not a fan and I'm sure they agree. It ain't all Norman Rockwell.

I had a big argument with my local KofC council decades ago about having a Christmas Party and, departing from their usual tradition, inviting the poor from the Township to come party with us. Serve them food instead of us eating. Give their children presents instead of giving "our kids" morse stuff. And, having a "needs registration"  tree where we tried to really hep people. Or at least, just listen and sympathize. You'd think I was ripping the food from their children's mouths. Needless to say they held the traditional party, and soon after I ended my association with those Pharisees.

I hope you're more successful. I didn't buy the explanation of need to abbreviate. I think it's a look into their soul.

But then I am Ebenezer, "Are there no workhouses?"]

Manhattan Star Taylor Sewitt Signs Pro Baseball Contract
*** begin quote ***

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Former Manhattan College pitcher Taylor Sewitt signed a professional contract to play independent ball for the Gary Railcats of the Northern League in 2013. Sewitt, a right-handed pitcher from Highland Mills, N.Y., was the 2012 MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after a spectacular postseason performance to lead Manhattan to the NCAA Tournament.

The Railcats are based in Gary, Ind. and are a member of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. They play their home games at U.S. Steel Yard, a 6,000-seat venue that opened in 2002.

[JR: Like winning the lottery, it's a long way from college to the major leagues. I don't usually follow sports, Alma Mater does that. (Not well imho, but that's another discussion.) I do from time to time find certain "sports stories" important to call out. In this case, I hope that alums in the Gary Indiana area go to a game and root for our fellow alum. Even those alums on the circuit should be aware of this. What a win for Alma Mater if at an away game where Taylor gets the ball is there are bunch of "Green Crazies" to cheer him on. People will wonder what is this craziness of Jasper Fandom? LOL, maybe he'll even pitch better!]

ENDNOTE: Jerks deserve tickets

I went into Seaside Heights and traffic was an orderly mess. Emergency traffic was directed to use the left lane; mundanes had the two right lanes. Mile or two of traffic. Couple hours to get in.

As we got to the choke point, the cop stopped two people in the left lane and tossed then into the regular lane.

Those deserved tickets. Disobeying a traffic control device (i.e., the many huge signs saying emergency priority traffic left lane only)!!!

I'd have said: "License, registration, and insurance card. Pull over into the curb." And after writing them up, I'd have sent them on their way to the back of the line.

How else will people learn to follow simple rules for an orderly society?
