Justice Thomas speaks about Catholicism, youthful aspiration to priesthood

*** begin quote ***

CWN - September 18, 2012

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas spoke of his personal background and his Catholic faith in a recent public appearance, and revealed that during his youth he had planned to become a priest.

Questioned about the presence of 6 Catholics on the Supreme Court, Justice Thomas responded: “We’re all from the Ivy League. That seems to be more relevant than what faith we are.”

JOBIT: Geelan, Daniel J. [MC1959 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/lohud/obituary.aspx?n=Daniel-Geelan&pid=160038778

Daniel J. Geelan (1937 - 2012)
Obituary

Geelan, Daniel J.

Daniel J. Geelan, 75, of Suffern N.Y. and East Hampton, Long Island, died on September 21, 2012 following a stroke. Daniel was surrounded by his devoted family at the time of his passing. He was the son of John Geelan, Bailieboro, County Cavan and Mary Geelan (nee Mannion), Glennamaddy, County Galway. Daniel was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen Geelan (nee Doyle), to whom he was married for 50 years. He is also survived by his sons Daniel A. Geelan (Resabel), John D. Geelan, daughters Marie T. Lacey (Frederick) and Courtney A. Geelan, and his grandchildren Isabel, Walsh, Clara, Daniel and Conor. His sister Catherine Cooney, brothers John and William Geelan and many nieces and nephews also mourn his passing.

Daniel was a retired Senior Executive Vice President of Marketing of Comdisco, Inc. He grew up in Washington Heights, St. Rosa Lima Parish, Manhattan and went on to Cardinal Hayes High School, Manhattan College ('59) and earned an MBA from New York University. He served his country and was Honorably Discharged as a Specialist with the U.S.A.R.. Committed to his community, he was the co-Founder of the Rockland County A.O.H. Feis., an Irish festival that brings thousands each year to Rockland County to celebrate their Irish heritage. Daniel also served as Rockland County Aide to the Grand Marshal, New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade.

In retirement, Daniel focused on serving those in need and pain. A daily communicant, and parish member at Sacred Heart Church, Suffern, NY, Daniel was also a Eucharistic Minister to prisoners at the Westchester Correctional Facility and patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Daniel also founded DonateA.com, a charity that provides sports tickets to children and families battling cancer. DonateA.com principally provides tickets to children being treated at Hackenscak Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and Memorial Sloan Kettering. The fact that these children and their families could enjoy a few care free hours in the sun brought Daniel great joy. He was inspired to create this charity as a result of his own battles with the disease.

The wake will be held Monday evening from 7pm to 9pm and Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern N.Y.. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Church in Suffern. Daniel will be interred at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery, East Hampton, NY. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Daniel's name to Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, New York.

Yes I did know Dan. He was a good friend of my late parents. As a little boy our families spent time in the summer with his family. I reconnected with him 2 years ago and we played a round of golf. Dan actually started the Irish Feis (festival) in Rockland County that brings about 6,000 people every summer to the event. I went to the wake yesterday and I noticed his Manhattan pin on his lapel. He was a proud Jasper.

DSM Group Climbing the Ranks of New Jersey's Best PR Firms
Franklin Lakes company continues its rise up the NJBIZ list of "Top 50 Public Relations Firms"
By Stephanie Alberico
September 19, 2012

*** begin quote ***

Thanks to an energetic, engaged and innovative staff, one Franklin Lakes public relations firm has risen from a one-man operation to one of New Jersey's best agencies.

NJBIZ ranked The DSM Group No. 15 on its list of best Public Relations firms in New Jersey this month.

In the last four years on the Top 50 Public Relations Firms list, DSM has consistently moved up — including its meteoric rise 14 spots on this year's list.

*** and ***

Jessica Panicucci, the firm's social media manager, graduated this past May from Manhattan College with a bachelor of arts in corporate communications and telecommunications and started full-time with DSM in June.

“Our clients come in for a marketing plan, and then we meet their needs depending upon that plan,” she said.

*** and ***

Panicucci said growth and quality work were atop the company's to-do list, along with building more of the long-lasting relationships to which Magarro referred.

"When the list gets published next year, we hope to move up," Panicucci said. "We don't expect to jump 14 spots like we did this year, but we would like to move up."

JFOUND: Beydoun, Bilal (MC1991) in actor

http://www.bilalbeydoun.com

Welcome to the Web site of Actor Bilal Beydoun

Bilal has appeared in multiple independent films and is training year-round with Alice Spivak in a rigorous Advanced Scene Study class. This training has refined Bilal as an actor and has taught him to logically approach a character's mind. He highly recommends Alice Spivak to any actor that wants an organic and analytical approach to building a three-dimensional character.
Bilal is currently seeking representation that he can collaborate with on a long-term and strategic level. He understands that the business of acting is just as important as the art-form itself, and wants to work alongside someone that can capitalize on both an actor's tangible and intangible characteristics.

JHQ: Twelfth Night Friday 10/12

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/american-shakespeare-center-brings-twelfth-night-manhattan-college-oct-12

Twelfth Night to Manhattan College on Oct. 12

The ASC’s Tempt Me Further tour to perform a classic play by Shakespeare on campus.

From the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Va., the American Shakespeare Center’s traveling troupe will bring Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night to life on Friday, Oct. 12, on the stage of Manhattan College’s Smith Auditorium.

“Twelfth Night is the feast of the Epiphany and is marked with celebrating, merrymaking and madcap behavior,” says guest director John Basil. “Everything is upside down in Twelfth Night and mistaken identity is common in the world.”

The play, a kickoff to the College’s annual Family Weekend, will start at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), and families and the community are invited to attend the play. Admission to the performance is free for students and their parents with a valid student ID, and $5 for the outside community.

Leading up to the performance, Ralph Alan Cohen, director of mission and co-founder of the American Shakespeare Center, will deliver a lecture entitled Shakespeare Directs from the Tavern on Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in Hayden 100. Cohen is also the Gonder Professor of Shakespeare and Performance at Mary Baldwin College’s Master of Letters and Fine Arts program.

The Manhattan College School of Arts and English department are sponsoring the performance of Twelfth Night. For questions regarding the performance, please contact Brian Chalk, Ph.D., assistant professor of English by email at brian.chalk@manhattan.edu.

Resident Donates $10 Million to Manhattan College
Posted by Liz Connolly
September 24, 2012

Thomas D. O’Malley ’63, longtime Greenwich resident and former chairman of the board of trustees, has committed $10 million toward the building of Manhattan College’s new Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons. O’Malley’s contribution is the largest gift in the College’s history and will benefit a much-needed space for the growing campus community.

“Mary Alice and I are pleased to be able to continue our support for Manhattan College, and particularly to have the honor of the lead gift for a building that will be named after a Manhattan graduate who has and continues to give great service to his city and his country,” said O’Malley, executive chairman of PBF Energy Company LLC. “Police Commissioner Ray Kelly does, in our view, reflect all that Manhattan College teaches. His success, service and unblemished reputation provides the model that we ask our students to aspire to.”

The $10 million contribution will advance the College’s ongoing campaign to build a state-of-the-art student commons, which is expected to break ground at the end of the year.

“My classmate Tom O’Malley’s generous contribution of time and personal wealth to our alma mater is in the finest traditions of the College and its patron saint, John Baptist de La Salle. I am honored beyond measure to have the new student center named after me, which I recognize as a tribute also to the life-saving work of the entire New York City Police Department, and to the many outstanding Manhattan alumni who have served in its ranks,” said Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

O’Malley has served as chairman of Manhattan’s board of trustees for the past seven years until this past July, and was also a trustee from 1987-2002. In addition to his nearly 50-year professional career, he has served on the boards of several educational and charitable organizations. To honor O’Malley’s continuous dedication to Manhattan College, the College formally renamed the renovated library the Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library in 2002, and also awarded him a Doctor of Humane Letters at the 2012 Spring Commencement.

“Tom and Mary Alice O’Malley are true heroes of Manhattan College,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president. “Their past generosity, in funding the O’Malley Library and other initiatives, has already strengthened the institution enormously; this unprecedented new gift in support of the Kelly Commons will allow yet another huge stride forward.”

Thus far, the College has raised $29 million toward the student commons, which includes O’Malley’s recent gift. For more information about the Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons and to see a video rendering of the building, visit http://www.manhattan.edu/giving/student-commons-campaign.

A popular bumper sticker declares: “You Can’t Be Pro-Choice and Catholic!” Or can you?

When I studied Catholic theology [while earning a master’s from Manhattan College], I learned that the essence of morality is conscience. Choices can be very complicated. Our role is to train people to develop consciences.

What do you tell Catholics who pray for change in the church?

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the priest and paleontologist, said that we have to believe in the slow work of God. And the Catholic Church works very slowly.

JEMAIL: Yurcisin, Michael (MC2012) has job advice

From: Michael Yurcisin, Recruiter at Workbridge Associates
To: FJohn Reinke
Date: September 26, 2012

Here's my advice for class of 2013 and beyond. Not too much since I just graduated, but a start:

Reach out to alumni when looking for a job. I'm proud to be a Jasper and there are many others who feel the same and are in more of a position to help new graduates. I posted on our linkedin page when I was looking for my first job out of school and I was able to network with a few people, one of which helped me pick the field in which I am currently working. The great thing about an alumni is that they know where you are coming from and can give you the advice that may not be so easy to swallow, but that could be invaluable.

Yurcisin, Michael (MC2012)

[JR: I always recommend the concept of "structured networking" as espoused by John Lucht. That always worked for me. YMMV. I'm sure that using Jaspers can serve to quickly build a network. Combine that with developing a UVP and USP and it seems like a winning script to me.]

JHQ: Alama Mater tweets Nolan, Christine [MC2016] exploit

Climbing Mt. Everest With Diabetes: 'I Had to Sleep With My Insulin'
Christine Nolan climbed 17,500 feet to the base camp of Mount Everest in 2012. Her type I diabetes made the arduous climb an even greater challenge, but Nolan is determined not to let her condition define her life.
By Stephanie Sy, Everyday Health Senior Editor

*** begin quote ***

Eighteen-year-old Christine Nolan vividly remembers the days four years ago when she started feeling the disturbing symptoms of type I diabetes.

"I was really thirsty, I had to go to the bathroom all the time, and I could not focus," she says. "I was just weak all the time."

A month later, she was plunged into a life-threatening state called ketoacidosis. Her body was not producing insulin. Nolan's daily life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with type I diabetes. She had to count carbohydrates, check her blood sugar frequently, and receive insulin shots.

Despite her diagnosis, Nolan decided to climb to the base camp of the world's tallest mountain, Mount Everest, in the spring of 2012.

"It was a challenge, but I didn't have a problem at all with my diabetes," she says. "My blood sugars were perfect."

Now a freshman at Manhattan College, Nolan receives her insulin doses through a self-programmed pod that lets her avoid having to administer shots. She is wary of the temptations of the 24-hour all-you-can-eat cafeteria on campus, and trying to stay active. She is also raising funds and spreading awareness about diabetes through events such as the Step Out Walk for the American Diabetes Association.

JFACEBOOK: Carey, Christopher [MC1984] celebrates Taylor, Maureen [MC1985]

Christopher Carey

‎25 years ago today I received the greatest gift of my life when I married my Manhattan College sweetheart Maureen Taylor at St William the Abbott Church in Seaford, Long Island. We have been blessed with two beautiful and talented daughters Tara and Anna. We have also enjoyed the love and support of the best friends and family anyone could ask for.

Earlier this year Maureen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her quiet grace and dignity through the healing process has been an inspiration to us all. As we move into the next 25 years of our marraige I know she will continue to amaze me. I love her more now then ever.

ENDNOTE: ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ British elderly

‘Do Not Resuscitate’ orders being imposed on British elderly, infirm

*** begin quote ***

CWN - September 14, 2012

William Oddie of the Catholic Herald reports that there is widespread evidence that DNR (“do not resuscitate”) orders are being imposed on elderly or disabled patients at health-care facilities, without the patients’ knowledge or approval.

An investigation by the Care Quality Commission found that DNR orders are “routinely” placed for elderly hospital patients, without consultation with the patients or their family members, Oddie writes. He asks why government officials have not taken steps to curb this obvious abuse.
