Commerce Secretary John Bryson is taking a medical leave of
absence after his involvement in two automobile accidents in
California last weekend. Police said the accidents possibly were
linked to a seizure he suffered.
Mr. Bryson, who was found unconscious in his car late Saturday
afternoon, was treated and taken to a hospital for examination.
Mr. Bryson, 68, was released from the hospital after staying
overnight for observation.
Late Monday night, the Commerce Department said Mr. Bryson would
take a medical leave of an unstated duration. The White House said
he would undergo tests and evaluations.

No secret, I'm no fan of politicians or bureaucrats.
I have to admit, that when I first heard the story, I thought DUI.
Wrong!
Uncharitable, unChristian, and not "innocent until proven guilty".
Maybe this is a lesson to me. And to others.
It's asserted in the news that a minor stroke when driving is a
more common happening than anyone realized.
So, as Penance for that sin, I'll remember this fellow in my daily
prayers AND, when I think DUI, I'll reserve judgement, thinking
"possible stroke".
I STILL have an axe for politicians and bureaucrats. But every one
gets the presumption of innocence! Even if they are a politician
or bureaucrat!
Our fellow alums probably don't have this prejudice, but maybe
some might need a elbow joggle?

Yesterday, the CIC had a bad night
Yes. Once again the CIC has had an episode of "early onset
stupidity". Honestly, I have no idea where my brain was at last
night. I messed up a link and resent last week. I'll say: "It was
such great issue that it deserved a reprise." And, then on the main
index page week #25's entry points to week #24. Although if you
actually put in the URL for week #25 that works.
This just goes to prove the old rule: "You get what you pay for."
I'll do better next week. Almost slipped and typed "try". And we all
know what the automatic text substitution software its in for that:
“NO! ... Try not! ... Do or do not... there is no try.” (To do it
justice, you must say the word try with all the revulsion and
disgust you can put on it. Like you were talking about a rapist, a
child murderer, or a politician!) -- Yoda (Fictional character from

Yeah, if I type "try" without the quotes, then that automatically
substitutes for it. To remind me that I never "try"!
The work laptop doesn't have an approved "automatic substitution"
software package, or lots of other things either, and it makes a
difference. I'me used to my laptop's substitution program "helping"
me with my writing. After all I'm just a fat old white guy injineer;
not "a Engrish majur from up da hill".

age of sixty-five. He was a pretty good relief pitcher for the
Cincinnati Reds—the Big Red Machine—during the 1970s. What I
remember most about him, though, occurred during the National
League playoffs in 1973 against my beloved Mets. That’s when Pedro
took a hearty bite or two out of a Mets baseball cap.

The 1913 Federal Reserve Act was an early attempt to control the
flow of money through government action which, if it had acted
properly in 1929/30, could have mitigated the Great Depression.
Economist John Maynard Keynes looked at cycles of boom and bust and
sought solutions. (Investopedia citation): "Intervention would come
in the form of government spending and tax breaks in order to
stimulate the economy, and government spending cuts and tax hikes in
good times, in order to curb inflation."
Hence FDR's New Deal government spending including World War II
defense preparations restored the economy.
Governmental Republicans like Eisenhower were Keynesians. Along with
his National Defense Act which paid for my 1960s Manhattan College
education and building the interstate highway system, I can clearly
remember Ike on the radio in 1958 urging Americans to go out and
spend their savings on products to stimulate the economy.
JFK's prosperity tax cut and LBJ's Great Society domestic spending
promoted growth.
Columnist Paul Krugman suggests that even conservative icon Ronald
Reagan pursued Keynesian practices through state and local
government fiscal sharing until his economic slump ended.

Dear John,
The June 14th, 2012 Edition of CATHOLIC NEW YORK reports that
Thomas Barbagallo,'99 will be ordained to the permanent diaconate
on June 23rd at 9 AM by Cardinal Dolan. The report read as as
follows:
Deacon Thomas Barbagallo, 51, is director of archives for the New
York Yankees. He said he decided to pursue the diaconate to
further his sense of service and increase his understanding of
diaconal ministry. He is a graduate of Manhattan College and Mercy
College. He and his wife, Theresa Marie, are parishioners of St.
Paul the Apostle, Yonkers. They have two daughters. He is retired
from the New York City Police Department.

Robert Claude Griffith
Robert Claude Griffith, 71, of Silver Spring, died of cancer May 30,
2012, in Casey House in Rockville.
Born May 4, 1941, in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of the late
George Griffith Sr. and Maryemma Leahman. He was married to Filia
Griffith for 14 years. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine
Armani of Baldwinsville, N.Y.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College, and lived
in Silver Spring for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his four children, Susan Heisler of Townsend,
Mass.; Amy Garfinkle of Mason, N.H.; Todd Griffith of Concord,
Mass.; and William Griffith of Silver Spring; three siblings,
Richard Griffith of Wisconsin, Roger Griffith of Rochester, N.Y.;
and George Griffith Jr. of Silver Spring; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. June 16 at Colesville
Presbyterian Church, 12800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring. The
family handled the arrangements.
Contributions may be made to the church for its memorial garden.

M.B.A. Students Visit Brazil and Receive Insight on Rising Economy
M.B.A. students participating in the Doing Business in the BRIC
Economies experiential course had the opportunity to visit Brazil
this summer.
Seven new M.B.A. students received a head start on their graduate
studies with a nearly two-week summer trip to Brazil to learn more
about the country’s growing economy. The trip is part of a
three-credit experiential course called Doing Business in the BRIC
Economies (Brazil, Russia, India and China), and followed last
year’s inaugural trip to India.
On May 21, the Lucky7 (as the students referred to themselves in a
class blog) and their chaperone Yassir Samra, Ph.D., assistant
professor of management and marketing, embarked on the trip of a
lifetime to explore the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and
Manaus, and the Amazon rainforest.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Islander John R. Wolfe, 77, of
Little Egg Harbor N.J., a retired engineer and alumnus of
Manhattan College, died Wednesday in Seven Ocean Medical Center,
Little Egg Harbor, N.J.
Born in West Brighton, Mr. Wolfe moved to Westerleigh in 1958. He
settled in Little Egg Harbor, N.J. in 2005.
Mr. Wolfe worked as an engineer for Western Electric before
retiring in 1992.
He graduated from St. Peter’s Boys High School in 1953 and was
captain of the track team. Mr. Wolfe went on to graduate with his
associate degree in engineering from Manhattan College in the late
1950s.
Mr. Wolfe served as a first class private in the U.S. Army,
stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War.
He was a parishioner of St. Rita’s R.C. Church, Meiers Corners,
where he was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration and the Holy Name
Society, Mr. Wolfe also coached their girls track and boys
basketball teams.
He was also president of the Seniors Golf Club at Silver lake Golf
Course, and sang in the Big Apple Chorus.
Mr. Wolfe enjoyed playing golf, painting and making bird houses.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Maureen Donovan; a
son, John R. Wolfe III; daughters, Mary-Jeanne Wolfe, Colleen
Higgins, Eileen Rosales, Christine Wolfe and Maureen Wolfe; a
brother, Robert Wolfe; two sisters, Kathleen Krebs and Roberta
Young, and three grandchildren.
The funeral mass will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Teresa’s R.C.
Church, Little Egg Harbor, N.J. Arrangements, including a burial
at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Little Egg Harbor, N.J., are being
handled by Maxwell Funeral Home, Little Egg Harbor.

Kalamazoo College hires head coach for first varsity women's
lacrosse team

Kalamazoo College officials announced Wednesday that Emilia Ward
has been appointed head coach of the first women's varsity
lacrosse team in the College's history. Women's lacrosse will
continue to compete as a club sport in 2012-13 before taking the
field as a varsity sport in the spring of the 2013-14 academic
year.
Women's lacrosse will be the first new varsity sport at Kalamazoo
College since 1991, when women's golf was added. A men's varsity
lacrosse program is scheduled to take the field in spring 2015.
Both teams will play on Kalamazoo College's newly renovated
athletics fields due to open this fall.
"We are delighted to welcome Coach Ward to the Hornet athletic
program," said Kalamazoo College president Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran.
"She brings experience and enthusiasm as a player, coach, and
someone who has helped to build lacrosse programs at other
institutions."
Wilson-Oyelaran said Ward's arrival coincides with the dawn of a
new era in Hornet athletics.
"Our renovated outdoor athletics facility, with a new field house,
artificial turf fields, and stadium lights, will help us compete
with peer institutions across the country in recruiting students
who want to attend a top college and play intercollegiate
athletics."
Women's and men's lacrosse, with about 25 to 35 players each, will
also help propel 'K' toward its enrollment goal of 1,500 students,
she added.
Ward helped start a women's lacrosse program at Winthrop
University in Rock Hill, S.C. She also served as assistant coach
at Adrian College from 2008 to 2011, helping the Bulldogs to a
40-12 record over three seasons and Midwest Lacrosse Conference
regular season and tournament championships in 2011. Ward assisted
the high school and middle school programs at Brighton High School
this past season while continuing in her role as coach of the
Midwestern Force/Southern Storm Lacrosse club team.
A native of Farmington Hills, Ward is a 2008 graduate of Manhattan
College in Bronx, New York. She earned four varsity letters for
the Jaspers and earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
All-Academic honors three times.
Women's lacrosse will be an official sport in the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) during the 2012-13
spring season. Every MIAA member college except K and Saint Mary's
in South Bend plans to field a varsity team.

columnist Anthony Stevens-Arroyo is a Catholic who does not believe
the Obama Administration is attacking religious liberty by mandating
Catholic institutions to pay for birth control in their employee
health plans.
But he also doesn’t think the Church should even be in the business
of operating universities, hospitals and other agencies that serve
the public welfare.
“I believe it is a distraction and an imperfection in the Catholic
Church for us to be running institutions like hospitals where the
Church is receiving money, and has public obligations,” he said.
“I think that the Church running corporations, taking tax money,
engaging in anti-union practices ... I think all of that complicates
the role of the Church as a beacon of truth. I would like the Church
to return to its primitive state when the Church was not a part of
any establishment.”
Stevens-Arroyo told CNA June 5 he would like to see Catholic
universities “be restricted in terms of what is Catholic to the
department of theology.”
“I don’t think you can bring Catholic thinking or Catholic thought
into football teams or into the dorms of a frat house,” he said.
In his view, trying to do so creates “an intolerable tension” on
Church responsibilities and leads to “huge compromises” in behavior,
like monitoring the actions of students and faculty.
He believes his approach favors what he sees as the Church’s return
to “the purity of the Gospel.”
Stevens-Arroyo is a religion scholar and a professor emeritus of
Puerto Rican and Latino Studies at Brooklyn College. He also writes
at the Washington Post’s “On Faith” section and at its “Catholic
America” blog.

Catholic schools, hospitals and charitable agencies around the
nation to close down.
