A Bartlett man found thousands of dollars inside an item he bought on eBay. James Labrecque sold an old safe on eBay for $122.93. "I made a mistake, you know, that's what it boils down to," said Labrecque. "And it cost me dearly." Labrecque, an eBay user for more than 15 years, said he did not have the combination to the safe and believed it to be just another item to turn around. "I thought it was empty," he said. "I shook it and I didn't feel anything inside of it, so I figured, well, maybe it's just a locked safe, you know. So I put it on eBay." Labrecque lives in California. The person who bought the safe lives in Bartlett. Upon receipt, the buyer brought the safe to a welder, who cut it open. MacKnight (Melissa) of Charlottesville, VA; niece Diane H. MacKnight of Arlington, VA; and cousin George W. Fischer (Janet) of Rosamond, CA. Charlie was born in the Bronx, NY on July 8, 1927. He graduated in 1945 from Tenafly High School in NJ, and in 1949 from Princeton University. After serving in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in 1952-1954, which included living a year in Japan, he received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In 1952 he married the late Elizabeth B. Ware. They had two daughters and lived for 20 years in Poughkeepsie, NY, where Charlie was active many years at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and served as its President. In 1980 they moved to Tampa, FL. They were later divorced. In 1985 he married Sharon at Mountain Lake Hotel in VA. From 1959-1974 he worked at Texaco, where he wrote a comprehensive and widely used book on research and development. He also spent a year as Visiting Professor at Columbia University and as Consultant to the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania, and two years as Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College. He was a popular national speaker for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers from 1968 to 1994. *** and *** Always an optimist, in 1987 Charlie created an inspirational alternative to Murphy's Law: "Everything turns out right… when you let it." He called the message "Charlie's Law". In 1999, he formed Charlie's Law, Inc., publisher of posters, greeting cards and magnets and in 2004, published "Murphy's Law Repealed!". "Charlie's Law" and ten of its corollaries are explicated in the book through personal and spiritual insights. The book continues to be life-changing for many readers. Rose took the two other children to basketball so it was just us three for most of the night. The three hours seemed like 15 minutes. Tierney and Ashley get along great and for me what could be better than to be around to gorgeous girls at my age, not much. Tierney is way smarter than I even thought, she is funny, cute, brilliant but in some ways still a child . She maybe the toughest person I ever meet, but doesn’t even realize it, I feel so insignificant in that department after listening to her, she is a giant in the toughness department. It was a great evening beyond description, how could I tell you all we talked about and shared in three hours, but it was our best time yet by far. We were able to help her eat and give her medicine which Ash and I never did before, we talked about her future which was great. Here is what her wish list looks like, first and foremost a service dog for her to get around with. I will exhaust all my connections to find out about these amazing creatures that God has given to the world. I guess we need to find out how much they cost, where do we get one, who can help us. Number 2 is an Apple computer so she can use that when she starts taking classes, which will be soon, she is very pumped up to go back to school very soon, either back to Seton Hall or take some credits at the college her, she was very psyched about this and this will happen soon. Number three was a piece of equipment to help her stand, she is going to send me more information on that piece. The great news now is we can focus on these items for her, the questions will be who can get us the computer from Apple, can anyone get it donated or at a discount, should only be about $2000 bucks retail, no big deal but with a donation or a discount maybe we can get her more stuff, the service dog, anyone know anyone who knows about these animals, someone must but to me the dog is the key item. Other great news, Ashley and her seemed like they known each other for years, that are making plans for dinner and going to the mall to do girl stuff, the van Rose has will help beyond words, Tierney has a new wheel chair which is way better than the last one, plus Tierney looked strong, young, beautiful and full of positive energy last night, she is going to be a powerful force in this world. Ennis, Sr., 97, a retired federal and city government specialist and real estate appraiser, died yesterday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, where he had resided for seven years. Born in the Bronx, he also lived in Sunnyside, Queens, before settling on Staten Island 25 years ago. Mr. Ennis graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Manhattan College, both in the Bronx. He served in the New York National Guard and retired with the rank of major, family said. Mr. Ennis was a member of the AARP and sang in a barber shop quartet. He enjoyed going to military reunions and was a member of the Order of Saint Barbara military honor Society and the American Legion. His wife, Virginia, died in 1995. He also was preceded in death by his sons, Joseph and John, and his daughter, Jane Lazaro. Surviving Mr. Ennis are his son, William Jr.; his daughter, Patrice Whalen; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. 2012-Feb-29JEMAIL: Kelly, Ken [MC1954] cited by McEneney, Mike (MC1953)Dear John,I missed the announcement that Ken Kelly,'54 was inducted into the All Hallows High School Hall of Fame on October 28th, 2011. Below is the citation that accompanied his induction: " Ken was born in the Bronx of Irish parents John and Bridget Lavelle Kelly. He is the second of their four children. Older brother John James (All Hallows Class of 1948) now deceased, sister Margaret, a Sister of Mercy, and past provincial of her order, and James Patrick. Ken came to All Hallows from Sacred Heart Parish and School in the Highbridge section of the Bronx and graduated with honors in the Class of 1950. He ran on the track team and played varsity football. While a student at All Hallows, he worked at Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds as a vendor. After graduation, he attended Manhattan College where he was active in the Math Club, Phi Rho Pi Fraternity, Air Force ROTC, and ran for class president. At graduation he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Math/Physics and was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Air Force. He served from 1954 to 1957, and after time in the Reserves, was honorably discharged in 1965. While a senior at Manhattan, he was recruited by AT&T, where he worked for 46 years in a number of different assignments, retiring the first time as Director of Broadcast Services and the second time as a Regional Sales Manager. During his time at ATT&T, he attended the ATT&T/Harvard Advanced Degree program and received a Master's Degree in Management. Ken married Madeline Castiner Kelly on September 24, 1960 at St. Rose of Lima Church in New York City. They have four children, Kenneth, Karen Kelly Esposito, Thomas and Steven. They have three granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth, Julia Constance, Victoria Kelly Esposito and two grandsons, Matthew Paul Esposito and Thomas Christopher Kelly. Ken is a substitute teacher at his local high school, a past commander of the American Legion, a member of the Manasquan Elks, co-chairman of the All Hallows Class of 1950 Alumni, Chairman of the Manhattan College Career Job Fair, and a member of the Manhattan College Alumni Council. He has been a coordinator for the All Hallows Class of 1950 scholarship for needy students and, along with other classmates, has been and advocate for tuition vouchers for deserving students in private schools like All Hallows. Ken and Madeline enjoy, spring, summer, and fall at the Jersey shore and winter in Florida. They also enjoy gatherings with family and friends." Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Kutchman later moved to Manhattan before settling in New Dorp 20 years ago. He worked as a loader at The Home Depot in Mariners Harbor for four years. Mr. Kutchman studied telecommunications at Manhattan College, the Bronx. In his free time, he enjoyed building model cars and airplanes. He was an avid hobbyist. “He was a great guy, the best, a very good-hearted person who would help anybody,” said his brother, Chris Kutchman. In addition to his brother, Chris, surviving are a stepdaughter, Crystal Pipitone, and one stepson, Joseph Pipitone. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at A. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at American International College in Springfield Massachusetts. She lives in Connecticut with her one-and-a-half year-old daughter, Antonia. After obtaining his Master’s Degree at SUNY, Brockport, Dr. Ryan received a teaching assistantship to The Ohio State University, Nisonger Center. There he studied, conducted research and worked with prominent scholars in special education, psychology, adapted physical education and health services. In June of 1977, Dr. Ryan received his Ph. D. from the Ohio State University and accepted his first job in Cleveland as supervisor of adapted physical education and leisure services for the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD). Over the next seven years, he developed a comprehensive program of adapted physical education and leisure-recreation services for 4,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities. After being promoted to Director of Children’s Services for the CCBDD in 1985, Dr. Ryan worked with 31 school districts to implement special education services for the multi-handicapped in neighborhood schools and the development of preschool special education services. In 1998, Dr. Ryan became the CCBDD’s first Assistant Superintendent, responsible for the overall operation of the CCBDD’s educational, adult vocational, residential, transportation and clinical services. In 2002, Dr. Ryan became Superintendent/CEO of the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Ryan is recognized for his leadership at the local, state and national levels. They gloried in the fact that Franklin Delano Roosevelt made Frances Perkins – a devout Anglo-Catholic laywoman who belonged to the Episcopalian Church but retreated on occasion to a Catholic convent – Secretary of Labor and the first member of her sex to be awarded a cabinet post. And they welcomed Social Security – which was her handiwork. They did not stop to ponder whether public provision in this regard would subvert the moral principle that children are responsible for the well-being of their parents. They did not stop to consider whether this measure would reduce the incentives for procreation and nourish the temptation to think of sexual intercourse as an indoor sport. They did not stop to think. In the process, the leaders of the American Catholic Church fell prey to a conceit that had long before ensnared a great many mainstream Protestants in the United States – the notion that public provision is somehow akin to charity – and so they fostered state paternalism and undermined what they professed to teach: that charity is an individual responsibility and that it is appropriate that the laity join together under the leadership of the Church to alleviate the suffering of the poor.
