MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) - UPDATE: The seller has added a new comment to his feedback page claiming that the buyer never found any money: "He was playing a practical joke the safe was empty there wasnt any money in it."

A Bartlett man found thousands of dollars inside an item he bought on eBay. James Labrecque sold an old safe on eBay for $122.93. "I made a mistake, you know, that's what it boils down to," said Labrecque.  "And it cost me dearly." Labrecque, an eBay user for more than 15 years, said he did not have the combination to the safe and believed it to be just another item to turn around. "I thought it was empty," he said.  "I shook it and I didn't feel anything inside of it, so I figured, well, maybe it's just a locked safe, you know.  So I put it on eBay." Labrecque lives in California.  The person who bought the safe lives in Bartlett.  Upon receipt, the buyer brought the safe to a welder, who cut it open.

Inside the safe was $26,000 in cash.

[JR: At first I thought this was a finders keepers story. Then, it's a mistake. Then, it's a fraud. I'm totally confused. If it was a sale, then there's no gripe. I like stories like this for the ethical challenges that it makes us consider. In this case, I think the buyer bought it in good faith and it's not like it was the seller's money that he put in the safe and forgot it. I'm interested in the opinions of my fellow alums since their more moral than just a fat old white guy injineer.]

Manhattan College (the “College”), a not-for-profit higher educational institution, is seeking approval for the issuance of approximately $26,115,000 in tax-exempt refunding bonds (“Build NYC Bonds”).

The proceeds from the Build NYC Bonds, together with other funds of the College, will be used by the College to: 1) refund the outstanding Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (“DASNY”) Bonds (Manhattan College Insured Revenue Bonds, Series 2000); and to 2) pay certain costs related to the issuance of the Build NYC Bonds. The proceeds for the 2000 DASNY Bonds were used to finance a portion of the costs for the construction, furnishing and equipping of the O’Malley Library and to advance refund the then outstanding DASNY Bonds (Manhattan College Insured Revenue Bonds, Series 1992). The proceeds for the 1992 DASNY Bonds were used to refinance the costs for the construction, furnishing and equipping of the following College facilities: a) the East Hill Dormitory (re-named Horan Hall) (refund 1989 DASNY Bonds); b) the Research and Learning Center (refund 1984 DASNY Bonds); and c) the Jasper Hall (refinance a commercial bank loan) (collectively, the “Project Locations” with the O’Malley Library).

The College currently employs 157 full-time and 38 part-time employees (or 176 full-time equivalent employees) at the Project Locations. As the proceeds from the Build NYC Bonds include funds to be used to refinance the old debt of the College, no new employees are projected in connection with this financing.

MOBIT: Ware, Charles H. [MCxfac RIP]

http://www.tributes.com/show/Charles-H.-Ware-93308805

*** begin quote ***

Ware, Charles H. , 84, died February 20, 2012 at Bayfront Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Sharon V. Mayes of Palm Harbor; daughters Ellen E. Ware and Laura W. Pennington of Tampa; grandchildren Allen C. Pennington and Anna E. Pennington of Tampa; nephews Paul J. MacKnight (Sandie) of Sulphur, LA, Thomas E. MacKnight (Rhonda) of Aylett, VA, Kenneth C. MacKnight (Kim) of Calhoun, GA, and Dr. John M. MacKnight (Melissa) of Charlottesville, VA; niece Diane H. MacKnight of Arlington, VA; and cousin George W. Fischer (Janet) of Rosamond, CA.

Charlie was born in the Bronx, NY on July 8, 1927. He graduated in 1945 from Tenafly High School in NJ, and in 1949 from Princeton University. After serving in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in 1952-1954, which included living a year in Japan, he received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

In 1952 he married the late Elizabeth B. Ware. They had two daughters and lived for 20 years in Poughkeepsie, NY, where Charlie was active many years at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and served as its President. In 1980 they moved to Tampa, FL. They were later divorced. In 1985 he married Sharon at Mountain Lake Hotel in VA.

From 1959-1974 he worked at Texaco, where he wrote a comprehensive and widely used book on research and development. He also spent a year as Visiting Professor at Columbia University and as Consultant to the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania, and two years as Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College. He was a popular national speaker for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers from 1968 to 1994.

*** and ***

Always an optimist, in 1987 Charlie created an inspirational alternative to Murphy's Law: "Everything turns out right… when you let it." He called the message "Charlie's Law". In 1999, he formed Charlie's Law, Inc., publisher of posters, greeting cards and magnets and in 2004, published "Murphy's Law Repealed!". "Charlie's Law" and ten of its corollaries are explicated in the book through personal and spiritual insights. The book continues to be life-changing for many readers.

Charlie was a soft-spoken, creative man noted as much for his warmth as for his keen intellect. He was beloved and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, and indeed, by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to Princeton University.

A Celebration of Life officiated by the Rev. Alan Rowbotham will take place at 11 AM on March 7, 2012. Further details as to the location will be forthcoming.

MEMAIL: Update on Veliz, Tierney [MC2011]

[JR:  Update on Veliz, Tierney [MC2011] ]

from:  Jude DiGidio, CFP
to:  Jasper Fjohn68 in a list of others
date:  Sat, Feb 25, 2012 at 11:53 AM
subject:  Tierney

*** begin quote ***

Ashley and I were able to spend over three hours with Tierney on Friday night and it was awesome. Rose took the two other children to basketball so it was just us three for most of the night. The three hours seemed like 15 minutes. Tierney and Ashley get along great and for me what could be better than to be around to gorgeous girls at my age, not much. Tierney is way smarter than I even thought, she is funny, cute, brilliant  but in some ways still a child . She maybe the toughest person I ever meet, but doesn’t even realize it, I feel so insignificant in that department after listening to her, she is a giant in the toughness department.

It was a great evening beyond description, how could I tell you all we talked about and shared in three hours, but it was our best time yet by far. We were able to help her eat and give her medicine which Ash and I never did before, we talked about her future which was great.

Here is what her wish list looks like, first and foremost a service dog for her to get around with. I will exhaust all my connections to find out about these amazing creatures that God has given to the world. I guess we need to find out how much they cost, where do we get one, who can help us.

Number 2 is an Apple computer so she can use that when she starts taking classes, which will be soon, she is very pumped up to go back to school very soon, either back to Seton Hall or take some credits at the college her, she was very psyched about this and this will happen soon.

Number three was a piece of equipment to help her stand, she is going to send me more information on that piece. The great news now is we can focus on these items for her, the questions will be who can get us the computer from Apple, can anyone get it donated or at a discount, should only be about $2000 bucks retail, no big deal but with a donation or a discount maybe we can get her more stuff, the service dog, anyone know anyone who knows about these animals, someone must but to me the dog is the key item.

Other great news, Ashley and her seemed like they known each other for years, that are making plans for dinner and going to the mall to do girl stuff, the van Rose has will help beyond words, Tierney has a new wheel chair which is way better than the last one, plus Tierney looked strong, young, beautiful and full of positive energy last night, she is going to be a powerful force in this world.

Have a great weekend everyone, lets keep pushing for this girl and family, society will be way stronger with an independent Tierney Veliz,

Jude

Sheila Tighe recalls a special era in Staten Island women's basketball
Published: Sunday, February 26, 2012, 8:05 AM
By Tom Dowdtighe Staten Island

*** begin quote ***

From 3,000 miles away, even Sheila Tighe got swept away by the sudden, stunning stardom of Jeremy Lin.

*** and ***

Tighe went off to Manhattan College after scoring 1,891 points for the Eagles, still third on the Island’s all-time list, more than 30 years later.

*** and ***

And now Tighe and her No. 11 Jasper jersey are going to the big Hall, the one in Springfield, Mass., the town where James Naismith invented the game at the local YMCA. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Tighe is part of "The MAAC Experience," a 600-square-foot exhibit that opened in the fall to run in conjunction with the conference hosting its annual basketball tournaments in Springfield the next three years. She’s been chosen by Manhattan to represent the school on the MAAC Honor Roll, with each of the 10 schools in the league choosing one female and one male to be enshrined in the exhibit each year.

*** and ***

There will be a dinner on Friday evening where the 20 honorees will be recognized, and they’ll also take the court at halftime of Friday night’s 7:30 p.m. men’s game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.

*** and ***

After 20 years in L.A., Tighe is a founder herself. Last summer she and a partner opened City Films, producing commercials, documentaries, public service announcement and in-house corporate videos.

She said it all comes from basketball, the relationships she formed and the doors it opened.

"I have a lot of really fond memories," said Tighe. "I had really wonderful teammates. I had great friends from there. I love the fact that I was close to home, being from New York. I don’t think we accomplished what we really hoped to do. But we had a pretty good run and I loved every minute of it."

JHQ: New York Campus Compact

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/manhattan-college-joins-new-york-campus-compact

Manhattan College Joins New York Campus Compact
Posted on February 28, 2012

Manhattan College has become the newest member of the New York Campus Compact (NYCC), an association that connects more than 80 colleges and universities from across New York State. Hosted by Cornell University, the NYCC is the largest regional branch of the national network, a coalition that strives to promote active citizenship as a focus of higher education. As a member of the NYCC, Manhattan College will receive valuable resources to further promote student service and civic engagement within the community, an important aspect of the mission of the College.

“The College’s campus ministry and social action office has always encouraged service and community engagement on campus and provided faculty and other colleagues with any materials and community contacts we had,” said Lois Harr, director of campus ministry and social action at Manhattan College. “Campus Compact will help the College get to a new scale by providing an entire array of resources from research to program models, conferences to funding opportunities and more.”

A few of the faculty benefits of NYCC membership include the availability of the latest research, publications, program models, and even funding opportunities for Manhattan College. The NYCC also puts strategic plans in motion in useful ways, including fostering relationships between student life, academic affairs and the local community. Its membership offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience that augments academic learning and even generates thought about long-term civic and social solutions.

“Campus Compact will assist the College in being an even greater asset to our neighbors in the Bronx and beyond,” added Harr.

“Manhattan’s association with Campus Compact is a logical next step for us as we look to increase our students’ experience with community service and civic engagement in our current strategic plan,” said Richard Satterlee, Ph.D., vice president for student life. “I am certain that faculty and student life professionals will benefit from this association as they seek to expand opportunities for student learning, inside and outside of the classroom.”

Campus Compact serves more than 6 million students from across the United States and the coalition includes more than 1,100 national colleges and universities, from two-year to four-year public and private schools. NYCC member student volunteers provided an estimated $560 million worth of service to New York communities in 2010 with the aid of the NYCC.

John,

Paul Wilson, whose obituary was presented in Issue 09 of 2012 was a member of the Class of 1942.

Warren Schlickenrieder

[JR: Thanks, Warren. Often, when stuff happens on Thursday and Friday, it's difficult to get the email version updated. The email is a static shot of what exists on Saturday night. So readers, unless they check the daily, can be looking at "old news". Need digital ink. LOL! For a zero budget operation.]

Restoration Efforts in the City with a Ring Around It

*** begin quote ***

The greater New Orleans area is a melting pot of complex issues that often overlap and sometimes conflict. We've seen the impact that major hurricanes (like those in the 2005 season, Katrina and Rita) have had on the area, which are only heightened because of accelerated wetlands loss. According to data from partners of the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act initiative, "If nothing more is done to stop this land loss, Louisiana could potentially lose approximately 700 additional square miles of land, or an area about equal to the size of the greater Washington D.C.-Baltimore area, in the next 50 years."

[JR: Good story. Long. But what frustrates me is that the Gooferment caused, the Gooferment made it worse, and evidently the Gooferment hasn't finished the job. So volunteers have to work on the problem. Absurd. Cui bono? Politicians and bureaucrats. Sorry for the people who had to suffer through this.]

MEMAIL: Merriman, William [MCfaculty] reports on awards

John,

I am forwarding to you an email with 3 attachments that describe the 2/24 Physical Education Department's Distinguished Service Award Program honoring 3 distinguished alumni/ae. The three awardees (Anthony Servidio, '71; Dr. Terrence Ryan, '72; Dr. Laura Martorello, '88) are quite distinguished alumni/ae and well-deserving of the award. I hope you can use this for JasperJottings.

Thanks for doing JasperJottings! I read it every week and love to read about the doings of alums that I know, particularly my former students.

William Merriman, Ph.D.
Dean, School of Education

Someone will think you're supporting a "subversive". LOL! Never was able to convince anyone that this should be done by the Alumni office. Appreciate you sharing this with everyone. RE: Paul F. Wilson 1920 - 2012
From Richard Wilson

Thanks for placing the kind message on behalf of Manhattan College on my father's memorial site. Manhattan College is a "family school" - not only did my father graduate (42), but I did (79) and my son will (2013), as well as numerous uncles, cousins, etc. Once again, thank you very much and we deeply appreciate your sentiments. Richard

[JR: You're most welcome. Wish I could have captured his "song". Sadly, we have no process or resources to interview every Jasper on a regular basis. Imagine all that we'd learn. Tower on Babel comes to mind. But, we could do a Jasper-apedia. A compendium or encyclopedia of Jasper dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom). Thanks for writing.]

What do you do?John XXIII Educational Center began 3 years ago as an after school site for supervised study hall, mentoring, and tutoring after the close of San Juan Diego Middle School. I am responsible for overseeing study hall sessions, assisting students with homework, projects, and school assignments, maintaining the library, and planning and organizing weekly social activities for the students. During the daytime hours, John XXIII Educational Center offers Out-Reach Programs at various middle school sites. Our staff facilitates 5-6 week mini courses on topics related to anger management, gossip and bullying, self-esteem, and health related issues. I am currently responsible for facilitating four different Out-Reach Programs at various school sites.

What have you discovered about poverty from your work?

I have found that it is very easy, especially when working with those who are struggling with poverty, to fall into the trap of feeling like you always need to do something FOR that person, when in reality, the focus should be on doing something WITH that person. Sometimes someone who is struggling only needs a person to walk with them and empower them to take initiative and ownership over their situation to set them on the right path. The real beauty of being in service to those living in poverty is being a part of creating an environment that enables them to do something on their own

Why would you recommend a contribution to the LV Program from a prospective donor?

A donation to the LV program is a donation that extends far beyond the work of the Lasallian Volunteers. By donating to the LV program, you are investing in a worldwide network of people and places that believe in a quality education for everyone. Your donation not only helps with continuing the LV program, but also ensures that many Lasallian ministries will have the staff and resources they need to keep their doors open. Without Lasallian Volunteers, many schools and agencies would be unable to provide services for their students and clients. As a donor to the LV program, you are committing to changing lives by offering unique experiences to those who benefit from your generosity, volunteers and students alike.

[JR: No secret I don't have a high opinion of how "we" do "education" here in the USA. The Horace Mann meme is all wrong (i.e., Yack in the box model, cattle herds in a prison like scene, teacher unions insulating bad teachers, parents forced to send their children to these mind numbing places, parents abdicating their responsibility for educating their children, parent and bureaucrats transferring the costs to taxpayers, and the dumbing down of the electorate. Just look at the results and we don't change. Like a kid's locomotive stuck on a closed loop of track. BUT, (and there is always a BIG butt), I found this young lady's story to very Jasper-ishly inspiring. May she make a difference. We can only hope.]

JEMAIL: Call for pre-2001 copies of Jasper Jottings

Dear Dean Merriman:

Thanks for the content. It was a pleasure to add that to this week's Jasper Jottings. Always scrounging for "news". So it's a big help when it comes in over the transom.

You're most welcome. It's a heck of hobby. I think the accomplishments of my fellow alums are inspiring. I wish I had the resources to capture more of their stories. For some reason, folks feel that telling their story is bragging. False modesty imho. It's a "duty" to tell your story, warts and all, to help the rest of us navigate as well as share the dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom) that they've collected in their trek through what I call "real life".

When I retire, I think I creates some ebooks of all the Jasper Jottings I have. Sadly I didn't start collecting them all in one place online until 2001. Maybe I'll ask the readers to send in any old one's that they have? ROFL. We'll see who is more obsessive hoarder than me.

Thanks for your kind words. That type of feedback let's me know that the effort is worth it.

ENDNOTE: Liberty of conscience was / is part of the larger issue

http://ricochet.com/main-feed/American-Catholicism-s-Pact-With-the-Devil

American Catholicism’s Pact With the Devil
Paul A. Rahe · Feb. 10 at 5:21pm

*** begin quote ***

In the nascent American republic, this principle was codified in its purest form in the First Amendment to the Constitution. But it had additional ramifications as well – for the government’s scope was limited also in other ways. There were other amendments that made up what we now call the Bill of Rights, and many of the states prefaced their constitutions with bills of rights or added them as appendices. These were all intended to limit the scope of the government. They were all designed to protect the right of individuals to life, liberty, the acquisition and possession of property, and the pursuit of happiness as these individuals understood happiness. Put simply, liberty of conscience was part of a larger package.

This is what the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church forgot. In the 1930s, the majority of the  bishops, priests, and nuns sold their souls to the devil, and they did so with the best of intentions. In their concern for the suffering of those out of work and destitute, they wholeheartedly embraced the New Deal. They gloried in the fact that Franklin Delano Roosevelt made Frances Perkins – a devout Anglo-Catholic laywoman who belonged to the Episcopalian Church but retreated on occasion to a Catholic convent – Secretary of Labor and the first member of her sex to be awarded a cabinet post. And they welcomed Social Security – which was her handiwork. They did not stop to ponder whether public provision in this regard would subvert the moral principle that children are responsible for the well-being of their parents. They did not stop to consider whether this measure would reduce the incentives for procreation and nourish the temptation to think of sexual intercourse as an indoor sport. They did not stop to think.

In the process, the leaders of the American Catholic Church fell prey to a conceit that had long before ensnared a great many mainstream Protestants in the United States – the notion that public provision is somehow akin to charity – and so they fostered state paternalism and undermined what they professed to teach: that charity is an individual responsibility and that it is appropriate that the laity join together under the leadership of the Church to alleviate the suffering of the poor. In its place, they helped establish the Machiavellian principle that underpins modern liberalism – the notion that it is our Christian duty to confiscate other people’s money and redistribute it.

*** end quote ***

While this is a little nose-bleed-ish for this fat old white guy injineer, it does strike to the heart of the issue.

I've critiqued the decision not to fight Gooferment Skrules on a First Amendment basis. The Gooferment should not be propagandizing future voters. And, dumbing them down. That was the goal of the Prussians when they introduced the whole idea. And, "We, The Sheeple" just went along.

How do we put some spine back into the Church folks and the American People in general?

Maybe BHO44 has done that for us?

This is just the first shot at religious freedom. If BHO44 gets reelected, then Obamacare will open the flood gates of these type issues.

Do Catholics have the courage of a MLK or Gandhi to stand together in defiance of the civil authorities?

Sadly, I don't think so.

It's a war for the soul of America. A war that may have been lost in 1913. And, these are just the final skirmishes. Before there's total capitulation to the "Secular Progressive" meme.

Argh!
