John,I would fully agree that the Church should be in the forefront of encouraging its members to donate their organs after death. After all, isn't it a central tenet of Catholicism that the body is just a "vessel" and that the "real person" has gone to elsewhere after death? (As I've pointed out to fellow somewhat-agnostic friends, the alternative of hanging around for the worms or the flames isn't a real cheerful thought...)
On the other hand, I'd have to agree with the archbishop that "our organs should be donated as a gift to others and not as a duty," : I.E., the state should NOT have the right to DEMAND organ donation from those whose religious beliefs are against it.
As a default option however, if nothing is indicated one way or the other, far better for the State to give someone a heart and a life than to give the worms a tasty dessert.

Q: Are you from New York?
JH: Yes, I grew up in the Bronx, went to Catholic schools in New York and Catholic high school, Catholic college. I'm a graduate of Iona College. I have my master’s degree from Manhattan College. I found [Catholic education] to be very rewarding because it taught you certain structures and skills. Catholic schools have a traditional model of being well-organized, and the expectations are very high. And, you know, the skill sets that you learn certainly bode well later on in life.

Donald L. Mays has been elected to W. Conshohocken, Pa.-based ASTM International's board of directors for 2012-2014, according to a January 13 news release.
Mays has been involved with furniture safety, such as glass table tops, and recently joined Deloitte & Touche LLP in Stamford, Conn., as a director. In this new position he will create and build a new product safety consulting business for the firm. He is the former senior director of product safety and technical policy for Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports.
In his career, Mays has worked on product safety, consumer product testing, laboratory management, consumer advocacy, public outreach and education. He has served as a public spokesperson on product safety issues and has testified before Congress, presidential committees and government agencies.
Mays graduated from Manhattan College, New York City, with bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering. He began his career in 1977 with Texaco Inc. and was named senior engineer. He then held positions as director of testing for Consumers Union from 1984 to 1998; as technical director for the Good Housekeeping Institute from 1998 to 2002; and as vice president of retail and consumer product services for Intertek from 2002 to 2005. He returned to Consumers Union in 2005 as senior director, product safety and consumer sciences.
An ASTM International member since 1998, Mays is vice chairman/consumer participation for Committee F15 on Consumer Products, where he participates in developing safety standards for toys, juvenile products and furniture. In 2004 he received a Certificate of Appreciation from Committee F15 recognizing his professional planning and moderation of a joint ASTM/International Consumer Products Health and Safety Organization symposium on swimming pool and spa safety.
In addition to ASTM International, Mays is currently on the board of directors of the American National Standards Institute and has served on the board of the International Consumer Products Health and Safety Organization.

We were an unofficial acapella group comprised of people from MC Singers and Players. Usually the music director(Joe Napoli) for MC Singers would do a song or two during the Spring or Christmas concerts, and it either involved the christian brothers, Joe and some of the students or just the whole men's or women's section. I think Martin O'dea, Rob Fleissner, Charles Bates and I did the Talent show in '90. After that with Rob and myself as the core, we had Vince D, Jim Gunn, Roger Hudson, Jim Coster, Pat Wilcox, Rob Vitelli as participants when we did songs in later semesters. When I watch shows like The Sing Off, it reminds me of those days!

O'KEEFE Arthur S., 78, of Emerson, formerly of River Edge, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012.
Beloved husband of the late Barbara (nee Salerno). Loving father of Patricia Elgarhi and her husband Ahmed of Bloomingdale, Kevin and his wife Patricia of W. Wardsboro, VT, Theresa O'Keefe of Ramsey, Jeremiah and his wife Stacy of Downers Grove, IL and Maureen Kuenzler and her husband Keith of Ridgewood. Adored grandfather of Amanda, Adam, Brendan, Kevin, Connor, Devyn, Robert, Kieran and Bryn. Dear brother of Walter O'Keefe and his wife Joyce, Kathryn Cole and her husband Jack. Arthur is pre-deceased by his sister Helen Tracy. Brother-in-law of Francine Maclin and her husband Thomas, Carolyn Villamil and her husband Gregory, and William Tracy. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Arthur was a parishioner and lecture at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. church. Art was past Grand Knight of the Knights-of-Columbus, Msgr. Burke Council. Art was a graduate of Manhattan College and enjoyed a long and successful career as a sales executive for IBM.
Arthur was active in the community serving as Councilman and Recreation Commissioner in River Edge. He loved sports and coached youth baseball and football. He enjoyed playing softball for the K of C and playing golf with his good friends.
Above all else Arthur loved to spend time and travel with his wife Barbara. They visited all across the US and in Europe. They loved to go to movies and plays and playing cards with friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 AM at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, River Edge. Visiting hours are Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Beaugard Funeral Home, 869 Kinderkamack Road, River Edge. In lieu of floral tributes, donations in Art's memory to the Social Concerns Committee, c/o St. Peter the Apostle Church, 445 5th Ave., River Edge NJ or the American Diabetes Association , www.diabetes.org/honor would be appreciated.

I am pleased to announce that The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an operating division within the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), has appointed Mr. Dennis O. Romero to serve as the first Regional Administrator of SAMHSA in Region II. Most recently, Mr. Romero served as the Acting Director of SAMHSA’s Office of Indian Alcohol and Substance Abuse.
As the SAMHSA Regional Administrator, Mr. Romero will help SAMHSA reach out to and provide information to States, Territories, Tribes, providers, communities and other stakeholders, whether about funding opportunities, federal policies affecting them, or disaster preparedness and response. He will also make it easier for SAMHSA to collaborate with other HHS colleagues in the regional offices and be better informed about behavioral health needs throughout the region.
Mr. Romero has extensive experience in the fields of administration, program development, and as a seasoned clinician has served in numerous clinical capacities. Among them, Mr. Romero has served as the Deputy Director of the Alcoholism Council of New York (ACNY), in New York City as well as the Assistant to the Director of Mental Health at the William F. Ryan Community Health Center in New York City, one of the Nation’s largest and most comprehensive community-based health organizations. As the Inpatient Programs Manager at the Ellis Hospital Department of Psychiatry, in Schenectady, NY, he was directly involved with health care delivery systems, especially as they relate to managed care and quality assurance, Medicaid, and other issues of health care reform. He was instrumental in establishing an adolescent inpatient psychiatric unit as part of the comprehensive psychiatric services of Ellis Hospital as well as serving as the mental health liaison to the county.
Mr. Romero has served on the board of many professional committees, advisory boards, and commissions (at the Federal, state and local levels) that address both local and regional issues related to behavioral health issues and prevention, as well as allied social and educational issues. Currently serves an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Federal Executives. In 2008, he received the National Pearl Award for his dedication and contribution to Hispanic Families by the National Hispanic Family Initiative. Mr. Romero was also recognized by The Pacific Substance Abuse and Mental Health Collaborating Council (PSAMHCC) of the Pacific Jurisdictions at the Annual Conference for supporting and recognizing the great work of local providers. In 2007, he was recognized by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office For Addictive Disorders. In 1997, he received, by a public vote, the prestigious appointment to the New York State Board of Regents to the Committee of Professional Assistance Program under the Office of the Professions where he served in many capacities including Chair of the Committee. He is also the recipient of numerous other awards, honors and recognitions. He has been invited to offer reports and testimony before congressional hearings and at state legislatures in his capacity as a senior executive within SAMHSA and as a member of the substance abuse prevention / treatment community.
Earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Psychology from Cathedral College, Mr. Romero also holds a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Manhattan College. He received post-graduate training at the State University of New York (SUNY), Albany Campus.
We are very pleased to have Mr. Romero join the leadership team of HHS in Region II. Mr. Romero began his new duties shortly after the New Year.

Justin Jackette will never forget how the last day of his college basketball career started.
The former Iona Prep star was asked by Manhattan College teammate Jared Johnson to be quiet — before Jackette had awakened.
It was shortly after 6 a.m. on March 21, 2003 — the day after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq — and Johnson mumbled something in their Boston hotel room that woke up Jackette.
"Shut up, man," Jackette remembers Johnson telling him. "You've been saying something about the war. What are you talking about? I'm trying to get some sleep."
Actually, Johnson had heard Jackette's voice on the TV that was left on overnight. Jackette was speaking during the Jaspers' press conference at the FleetCenter after their practice the day before 14th-seeded Manhattan fell to No. 3 seed and eventual champion Syracuse 76-65 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
"A reporter asked what it was like playing an NCAA tournament game with the war going on," Jackette said. "They led off the 2 a.m. (ESPN) 'SportsCenter' with my answer. I was talking about the analogy coaches make when they say, 'It's going to be a war.' They first showed a video of a fighter plane with my voice talking over that, and then switched to me on the podium at the press conference."
It was Jackette's only NCAA tournament appearance in his three years at Manhattan. (He joined the Jaspers after transferring from William & Mary.)

"But it's been a couple years since I've been out of it, so I got the 'Get away from it for a while' out of my system," Jackette said. "Now that the tournament has come around, I miss it. I never thought I'd say I want to go to practice again — that was my least favorite part of playing. But now I wish I could go out and practice one more time."

BLUE POINT — Ursuline Sister Mary Josephine Gorman, 94, died January 2 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
She entered the congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk on August 15, 1933 and professed her final vows eight years later.
She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Manhattan College.
Sister Josephine ministered for many years as a teacher in Connecticut and the Diocese of Brooklyn, including: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park (1938-47); and Our Lady of Grace in Howard Beach (1953-59); she also ministered for several years from 1979-93 at the Stamford Parks and Recreations Summer Program directing arts and crafts. In 1996, after many years of active service, Sister Josephine retired to Blue Point where she continued a ministry of prayer.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated January 6 at the St. Ursula Center Chapel here, followed by interment at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters here. She is survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Age 81, of Newark, DE, died January 19, 2012 at Manor Care in Wilmington, DE.
Donald was born March 24, 1930, in Oswego, NY, the son of the late Antonio and Stella Arles. He graduated from Manhattan College, NY in 1952 with a BA in Civil Engineering and started work for E.I. DuPont de Nemours in Seaford, DE. On January 9, 1954, he married the former Grace White of Federalsburg, MD and they lived in Seaford until moving to Newark in 1974. He served in the Army, 1955-57 at Ft. Belvoir, VA as an instructor at the Army engineer School for field grade officers. Following his discharge he continued work at DuPont retiring in 1992. He then formed his own Corporation and worked with an engineering and construction company of DuPont projects. He closed his Corporation in 1996.
Don's hobbies were photography and art. He took many pictures of sights and places that he visited through his work and the family camping trips throughout the United States and Canada. He enjoyed oil painting and his paintings hang on the walls for the family to enjoy. He also loved riding the waves and the family vacations at Bethany Beach and the Outer Banks in NC.
Don was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church while living in Seaford and helped survey and lay out the cemetery. After moving to Newark he became a member of St. Johns/Holy Angels Church and served as an usher.
Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years, Grace; one brother, James Arles of New Rochelle, NY; seven children, Denise A. King, Oakton, VA, Anthony D. Arles, Miami, FL, Keith R. Arles, The Woodlands, TX, Andrea A. Raciti, Chester Springs, PA, Peter J. Arles, Pearland, TX, David P. Arles, Richmond, VA, and Jeannine A. McKnight, Sykesville, MD and 12 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, on Monday, January 23, 2012 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711. A visitation will be held at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Sunday January 22 from 6 - 8 pm or 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be at 3 pm Monday at Our lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Seaford. by McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973]John, as you know, I’ve been writing about and battling the “slippery slope” in the area of smoking bans and social engineering (kinda like civil engineering except the nuts have mouths… ;> ) for quite a while, so I tend to look toward “evil futures.”
I don’t want to spoil anyone’s reading pleasure by giving away crucial plot points, but there’s a story in Harlen Ellison’s collection, “Dangerous Visions,” that looks toward a future of mandated organ donation and at least one aspect of it is decidedly “non-purty.” What happens when the State decides that the need for organ donation to save lives justifies “harvesting” the organs from, for instance, condemned child murderers, so that “good and productive” members of society can continue to live and do good works? Sounds like a better idea than paying for those miscreants to live in five-star prison-hotels for the rest of their lives, eh? But think about the incentive for the rich and powerful to lower the bar on just which crimes eventually become deserving of such punishment.
To some extent I see the paid organ donation business in the same light. If I can sell a kidney for $10,000 to feed my starveling children, who draws the line to say I can’t sell a leg or a lung to buy a condo or a few kilos of crack cocaine? Or, as a voter, to overlook the need for child welfare since the lazy parents can always just feed their kids by first being required to donate some blood? Basically, on a gut level, I kind of agree with the organ selling philosophy as you outline the argument. But I’ve learned to be leery of slippery slopes and the “Good Germans” who look at their neighbors and say “Well, it’s really not THAT much of an imposition to take this particular little step.”

Now, as a little L libertarian, I am all for EVERYONE working hard, doing good, and making millions. I'm for the freedom and liberty that "millions" can be denominated in whatever the individual deems important: Federal Reserve Note's certificates of appreciation; units of recognition -- Q rating like Donal Trump, the adulation of fame like Taylor Swift's adoring teens tweens and fat old white guy injineers, or the teacher receiving the hugs of grateful students. Whatever floats your boat.
The politicians and bureaucrats, as well as all those who extract wealth corruptly from the process of Gooferment, seem to take advantage of their position. Add that in to the Regulatory Capture of Wall Street. And, the Crony Capitalism and Corporate Welfare and you have the reason that those "smart investments" always seem to pay off.
Then, for the Speaker to "vacation" at a 10k$/day hotel while "supporting" "Occupy Wall Street" just puts a knot in my tummy. It's OK for you to defraud us. Just don't rub our noses in it.
