School Choice and the Children of Obama
by Michael Moriarty

*** begin quote ***

I went to University of Detroit’s Jesuit High School in Northwest Detroit.

Out of all my educational experiences, those formative four years were the best and the most enduring. Matched up against four years of the Ivy League at Dartmouth College and a year abroad in England on a Fulbright Scholarship, the Catholic experience was the deepest, the longest lasting and, in my opinion, the greatest contributor to a long – 70 years so far – and wonderfully rewarding life.

*** end quote ***

Interesting that a Catholic High School has such a profound impact. To survive in the liberal Sodom of the USA is in itself a testiment to the human spirit. And it indicates how important a real Catholic education is. Not CCD to attempt to counteract the propagandizing of the Socialist Gooferment Skrules. It’s an experience that can’t be duplicated. Too bad it’s going the way of the dodo, because we didn’t fight hard enough? Can we make “the Hail Mary” pass?

Hornell, N.Y. — Lorry Castiglione, donning the white and green of Manhattan College, once threw the first-ever touchdown pass seen on live television, according to local legend.

“He always liked to tell that story,” John Tobin, a long-time friend of Castiglione, said. “I’m not sure who they played, but they played the game at Yankee Stadium. He threw the first touchdown ever to be seen live on T.V. — that’s the way Lorry told it anyway and it’s probably true. He was proud of that fact.”

Castiglione passed away at the age of 92, Aug. 23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The NY Applied Science School: Are NYIT and Manhattan College in the Mix?
September 19, 2011 at 3:06 pm
by Lisha Arino

*** begin quote ***

As previously reported, 27 institutions from around the world this past summer have expressed interest in helping NY start a new school for applied sciences, which is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to attract more tech firms to the area.

But two local schools aren’t on that list: the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Manhattan College.

*** and ***

Manhattan College, located in the Bronx, was also part of that consortium, said Elizabeth Connolly, from the school’s communications office, in an email.

Earlier this year, the mayor put out a request for proposals to build a new engineering school. According to the Economic Development Corporation’s website, the winning bid will receive the use city-owned land, seed money and the administration’s support. So far, the EDC has received 18 proposals from 27 institutions worldwide, with Stanford University and Cornell University expressing a strong interest in the project, with institutions from Israel, South Korea and Canada have also placed bids. Locally, Columbia University, New York University, Cooper Union, and the City University of New York have all expressed interest, as the deadline for bids is October 28.

Manhattan College hasn’t quite given up though, according to Connolly.

[JR: The Gooferment now wants to be in the education biz. Maybe it's my tin foil hat talking, but I'd be suspect of everything the Gooferment wants to do. The City of New York, the State of New York, and the Federal Government of the USA are all morally and fiscally bankrupt. MC could spin a lot of cycles distracted form its core mission while slitting its own throat (i.e., helping this new school get started). We've seen in the MC CMSV merger a lot of cycles wasted when stuff falls through. MC doesn't have those cycles to waste. Besides if MC was to get into bed with Bloomberg, all the fleas would come home to roost. A RINO; Bloomberg would bring along forced unionization, abortion "rights", same sex "marriage", and all the baggage one finds with atheistic Socialists. Look at how the Clergy and First Responders were treated at the recent 9/11 memorial. No, Gooferment is NOT your friend. And, past is prologue. Focus on the core mission; maybe this will dry up and go away.]

Letting Go and Starting Fresh (A Guest Post)

*** begin quote ***

I have the great pleasure of introducing Ryan Darcy, author of the blogs Waxed Red Threads and Postgame Vigilante as a guest blogger tonight.

Ever since I resigned – yes, I resigned from a steady job in this hapless, spiraling economy – I have been nothing short of ecstatic of the time I am able to spend with our five-month-old son, Nolan. I was an assistant coach at a very successful college baseball program – Manhattan College – for six years – to the tune of a 200-119 record. I also played at Manhattan from 1999 to 2003. I pitched. The head coach left to take the head job at Fordham but I did not go with him. Instead, I chose to pursue the head job at my alma mater, a place I was once proud to call my “home” – no more. To say there are a lot of idiosyncrasies and nuances associated with working there is an understatement. Given my ten years of dedication to the school, I basically knew all the ins and outs. However, I was passed over to become the next head coach. I felt slighted and decided it was in my best interest to leave after I got a voicemail telling me of their decision to go with another candidate. So be it.

{Extraneous Deleted}

*** end quote ***

[JR: I don't know what went into the decision that turned him down. I'm also not surprised at the voicemail. Jobseekers are not valued in today's society. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and THIS SATURDAY is when Mike is competing in the Super Spartan Race in Staten Island!! He is competing on behalf of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)’s own Fred’s Team, and donations will go towards pediatric cancer research. I am so proud of Mike, and his fellow competitor AJ Falco, as they are the first people competing in the Spartan Race on behalf of Fred’s Team! MSKCC contacted Mike, and I’m excited to announce that Fred’s Team has come on board as a sponsor for the Super Spartan Race this year, and will be staffing a booth at the finish line. One of the obstacles, the Traverse Wall, will be painted ORANGE for Fred’s Team and have some of their signage too! We are all so excited about the newly forged relationship between Fred’s Team and the Super Spartan Race. I told Mike what a difference I feel he has made already just by helping these two organizations team up!

Coach Ann Karine, one of the Fred’s Team running coaches, wrote an article for the Examiner about the Super Spartan Race and interviewed Mike to grab a quote about why he continues to fundraise and why he chose the Super Spartan Race:

http://www.examiner.com/endurance-sports-in-new-york/super-spartan-race-on-staten-island

For those of you wondering, the Spartan Race is an 8 mile mud run with 15+ obstacles. The competitors do not know in advance what the obstacles will be, but past ones have included rope climb, barbed wire crawl, etc. CRAZY!

Mike is about $900 away from his goal! If your means permit, please click on the link and help him reach his goal! Many thanks to those of you who have already donated and supported this great cause that is so near and dear to our hearts.

As far as race details, it is this Saturday, September 24th at 9AM at Wolfe’s Pond Park Preserve in Staten Island, NY. If you are free, PLEASE come join our family as we cheer Mike and AJ on. And I believe that Mike could use some extra words of encouragement as he gets ready to embark on this new adventure – please drop him a line in the guestbook too!! THANK YOU!!

Sept. 11 attacks inspired teen to volunteer at memorial, pursue politics

“I just sat there almost hypnotized by watching what was happening,” said Alvarez, a 2011 Xavier College Preparatory High School graduate whose family lives near PGA West in La Quinta.

“9/11 got him interested in politics,” said Leticia Alvarez, who noted that he has dreams one day of becoming president. “Frankie wants to change the world and make it better for people.”

In August, Alvarez moved to New York to attend school at Manhattan College, where he is studying philosophy.

“I’m walking in the footsteps of alumni lost,” Alvarez said.

Manhattan College is a private Christian school in Riverdale, an upscale suburban neighborhood near Manhattan. In 2001, the college lost 20 staff members and students in the attacks, according to the school’s website.

With his keen interest in the attacks, it’s only fitting that Alvarez would one day return.

Today, Alvarez is a volunteer at the National September 11 Memorial, an 8-acre tribute to the victims of 9/11 as well as the six people killed in the 1983 bombing of the World Trade Center.

LaGuardia College names academic hall for Maltese
By Joe Anuta

Educators at LaGuardia Community College dedicated an academic hall last Thursday to former state Sen. Serphin Maltese, a man who worked with lawmakers across the aisle and who has a lot in common with the students at the college.

“Serph Maltese is old-school,” said Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria), who spoke at the dedication. “He goes back to a time when things were bipartisan and cooperative.”

Maltese, a Republican, was elected in 1989 to the 15th Senate District, currently held by Sen. Joseph Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), and represented neighborhoods ranging from Howard Beach up through Maspeth and Middle Village.

Now his name sits permanently above a doorway on the fourth floor of a converted warehouse at 29-10 Thompson Ave. in Long Island City that used to house the Sunshine Biscuit Co.

Hi Everyone,

This morning you may have received an email from our former email account (XXXXXXX@aol.com) with a link to a graphic website. If you did, please do not open it or click on the link; this is a virus and will send similar emails from your account to your entire address book.

The way this all began (as far as we know it) is that we received an email from someone we know earlier this week. Not thinking anything of it, we opened the email and clicked on the link. What we received was a very graphic undesirable ADULT website to say the least. Since then I notified the sender and they claim that they did not send any emails but checked sent mail and they were in the same situation we are in now. The VIRUS somehow latches onto your email address book and sends out emails without you knowing it. The subject line may be different each time….Our initial email Subject Line was “In Best Regards”….the ones sent from our account is “No Subject” or totally blank.

So…..

Our former email addresses will all be deleted and we will be primarily using our new email address: YYYYYYYY@yahoo.com

We hope that your computer does not receive the same VIRUS that we got.

We hope that you are all well.

Dear Jasper ZZZZZZZZ,

I think if you do some more research you’ll find that the problem originates from your AOL or YAHOO account being hacked. GMAIL seems immune. At least, that’s what I have found on the several cases I’ve looked into for friends.

I recommend that you put in “QQQQ @ {Privacy Invoked}” in your address book. Since it’s an address you’d never use, any email received on that account would indicate there’s a problem. I have my own domain so this is zero effort on my part to setup. I do it for several people.

Use a complex robust long password and you’ll probably avoid the problem in the future.

Consider using LASTPASS, a free password management tool. Makes the whole job easier.

Good luck,
fjohn68

# # # # #

May I suggest that you have your own domain? The common wisdom, or is that common whizdumb, is to own your own name as a domain name. I own “reinke.cc”. (I like saying “sea sea me at reinke.cc”! ) I gives one quite a bit of control. And, it’s very cheap. I know three solutions at 25$/year using wordpressdotcom with gmail, 25$/year email only with 1and1, and 60$/year for domain+email+webspace also at 1and1. My point is not that you should use 1and1. http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 I could care less which one you use. It’s that getting on to your own domain with email is cheap and easy. And, it’s not hotmail, yahoo, or gmail. It IS your own “personal brand”.

ENDNOTE: The “death penalty” immoral?

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/is-supporting-the-death-penalty-christian/

FAITH
IS SUPPORTING THE DEATH PENALTY ‘CHRISTIAN?’
Posted on August 30, 2011 at 8:18pm by Billy Hallowell

*** begin quote ***

Head continues by explaining Jesus’ denunciations of violence in the Gospels. He makes it a point to note John 8:3-11, which shows Jesus stepping in to stop a would-be instance of capital punishment. Below, read this section of John for yourself:

3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

*** end quote ***

It’s interesting that followers of the Prince of Peace can endorse abortion, war, and the “death penalty”. Just strikes me as absurd.

First, the process of determining guilt or innocence is flawed. Time after time we hear of cases of “Sorry about that”. There’s no “eraser”, control Z, or backspace / retype on the death penalty. It’s final.

Now, bear in mind that these are dangerous people. Maybe we need a Devil’s Island.

We can save a lot of resources by stopping it.

Then, maybe we can say “Then, neither do I condemn you”?
