This wouldn’t have been imaginable fifteen years ago as something creative people could do. We are just beginning to tap the extraordinary potential for human creativity and how we can use the internet to harness that creativity. This is stunning both in concept and execution. Beautiful.

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) thinks I dispense power

Dear Jasper John,

In view of your desire to reimpose the “Spanish Inquisition” in order to end the Catholic Church’s problems with pedophilia and other sexual misbehavior I have to ask you which methods of torture you would prefer to be employed. Torture constituted the backbone of the Inquisition and there can be no Inquisitions without it. One would employ either new high tech torture or use the old proven techniques.

The tools of torture used in the Spanish Inquisition are described below: ( from Wikipedia)

“Although the Inquisition was technically forbidden from permanently harming or drawing blood, this still allowed for methods of torture. The methods most used were garrucha, toca and the potro. The application of the garrucha, also known as the strappado, consisted of suspending the victim from the ceiling by the wrists, which are tied behind the back. Sometimes weights were tied to the ankles, with a series of lifts and drops, during which the arms and legs suffered violent pulls and were sometimes dislocated.[60] The toca, also called interrogatorio mejorado del agua, consisted of introducing a cloth into the mouth of the victim, and forcing them to ingest water spilled from a jar so that they had the impression of drowning (see: waterboarding).[61] The potro, the rack, was the instrument of torture used most frequently.[62]

The assertion that “confessionem esse veram, non factam vi tormentorum” (literally: ((a person’s)) confession is truth, not made by way of torture.) sometimes follows a description of how, after torture had ended, the subject freely confessed to the offenses.[63] Thus, all confession acquired by means of torture were considered completely valid as they were supposedly made of the confessor’s own free will.

Once the process concluded, the inquisidores met with a representative of the bishop and with the consultores, experts in theology or Canon Law, which was called the consulta de fe. The case was voted and sentence pronounced, which had to be unanimous. In case of discrepancies, the Suprema had to be informed.”

I find it difficult to believe that a true “libertarian” would give so much power to authorities but have no doubt that you can justify torture in the name of orthodoxy.

I also note that the Catholic Bishops agree with me far more than they agree with your re economic justice, taxation, health care and other policies.

I am sorry to see the Church undermine its moral authority in these areas by covering up past sexual scandals.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

[JR: Of course, leave it to Jasper Stebbins to take hyperbole to make a point to extremes. Guess they skipped that in some MC class or other. One doesn't have to wonder how the Inquisition Gooferment bureaucrats got so far off course with mindsets like that. If the Church Leadership were "interested" in the problem that is robbing them of their political and moral authority, I'm sure they could figure out a mechanism to root it out and prevent it's return. As a little L libertarian, I don't "give" anyone anything. Certainly not the ability to initiate force. Ostracism is the preferred method of discipline. You've heard of ZAP. As far as policy agreements, the Bishops have fallen under the spell of the "Social Justice" from the "Secular Progressive" Communists. Economics teaches us that there is NO free lunch. And, certainly, Gooferment is just about the worst way to dispense "charity". And, they also fall into the error of the "economic pie" is a fixed size; arguing that the poor "deserve" a bigger slice. The poor "deserve" nothing. They, as well as any human being, have a RIGHT to a fair shot. Nothing more; nothing less. They should, like every person, be entitled to KEEP all that they earn. They, like every person, shouldn't be paying all the hidden taxes -- inflation, corporate taxes, energy taxes, regulatory taxes, and the tax of punitive diktats like "minimum wage". Some of us feel a moral obligation to help "The Poor". That can't be done by force. At the root "true charity" is the freedom to choose to do it. I'm glad we agree that the Church has undermined its authority. Wish we could agree on more, but that's a start. Donna Nobis Pacem.]

MFOUND: Dinter, Paul [MCfac] “turning its back on Catholic social teaching”

Laboring in Education

By Paul Dinter

*** begin quote ***

Such a conscientious observer would, I expect, be wondering why Manhattan College is turning its back on more than 100 years of Catholic social teaching and its recognition that, for individuals to be able to trade their labor fairly, they can and should do so “in solidarity” with their fellows. For without unions, individuals remain outmatched whether they are in the mines, on the assembly line, or in classrooms. One by one, they cannot benefit from the checks and balances that help assure that the “invisible hand” of the market does not ride roughshod over the less powerful.

*** end quote ***

Paul Dinter is adjunct professor of religious studies at Manhattan College.

# – # – #

[JR: I have yet to hear a grievance? Allowing the Gooferment to "regulate" religion is a mistake. And, what does "to stop adjunct faculty from associating as a union to improve their livelihood" mean. Same sex marriage benefits. Abortion insurance coverage. Sorry, but I have NOT heard a real need for a union. Does the administration beat "its" adjuncts for giving too many F's? Or A's? Are they in some way treated unfairly? I'm confused.]

All,

Hope you’re all doing well and enjoyed your Easter holidays.

I was hoping to receive some input for programming for the 2011-2012 academic year. One such idea was to hold a traditional Irish session with opportunities for performers (musicians/readers). If you’re interested in participating, please e-mail me at thomas.mccarthy@manhattan.edu.

If you have any suggestions for other events (Tenement Museum/Ellis Island/Irish Arts Center/Irish Repertory Theatre/Irish Night/lectures), let me know so we can discuss it with the officers and at upcoming meetings.

Appreciate your help and look forward to seeing you soon. Slainte,

The 6-foot-11 Manhattan College basketball player was in town Friday to speak to John Paul II athletes and the Ray girls basketball team as part of the 78415 Community Youth Development Program. He told the students how he overcame all his obstacles to become the first Division I college basketball player with one hand.

“You’re looking at a one-armed guy that plays Division I basketball. If you want it bad enough, you can get it,” said Laue, who just completed his sophomore season at Manhattan. “That’s what I’m here to tell you. You can do anything you want to do.”

Smiley: You get a sense given this teach-in that there is an interest, a new awakening, so to speak, or an angst, you tell me what you sense on the part of students these days given the state of our country right now.

West: Well I think students are hungry. We had 700 students at UMass, Amherst, they had gatherings at Manhattan College, they’re at UC Berkeley. They were all over the country. Morgan State University, the black brothers and sisters there. It was a beautiful thing to have so many young people on fire. They had a 2 hour meeting after Sister Frances Fox Piven and myself and Richard Trumka and other marvelous speakers spoke in New York.

But they had 2 hour local gatherings in order to keep alive the local activism in the face of this corporate greed and corporate assault on poor and working people, my brother.

Smiley: This hour we are going to talk with a long time friend of ours, both yours and mine, Father Michael Pfleger out of St. Sabina’s in Chicago. How would you describe Father Pfleger?

[JR: Interesting. I never heard any news report of "teach ins". And, certainly not at any of the many "manhattan colleges". Was there such? Was there such at our "manhattan college"? Margaret Sanger, the Soviets, and Democrats: Loving Abortion
by Paul Kengor | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 4/15/11 3:14 PM

“[W]e could well take example from Russia,” advised Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, “where birth control instruction is part of the regular welfare service of the government.”

My, how far modern liberal Democrats have progressed.

Sanger, Planned Parenthood matron and racial-eugenicist, who ran a “Negro Project,” who spoke to a KKK rally in 1926, who wished to rid America of its “human weeds” and “morons” and “imbeciles,” and who wanted birth control for “race improvement,” had just returned from a pilgrimage to Stalin’s Russia. Like many Potemkin progressives, she went there to soak in the glorious triumphs of the communist motherland. Each progressive dupe had a particular interest; John Dewey, for instance, hailed the Bolsheviks’ “Great Experiment” in public education. Sanger marveled at Lenin’s and Stalin’s wondrous advancements for women.

What struck me in recently re-reading this article is how Democrats in America have arrived at Sanger’s ideal, where Planned Parenthood’s services have become, in their mind, “part of the regular welfare service of the government” — just like good old Stalinist Russia.

Consider the hysterical response by Democrats to completely legitimate Republican attempts — amid record deficits and debt levels — to cut taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood:

“The dangerous, ideological cuts to Planned Parenthood that passed the House are never, never, never going to pass the Senate,” vowed Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), echoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who told House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) that there’s no chance defunding would pass the Senate. Indeed, how could there be? Democrats have a majority there.

It’s preposterous that America has run so far aground that one could even seriously entertain directing taxpayer dollars to America’s largest abortion provider. The “right” to an abortion had to be read into the Constitution, at the total exclusion of sections guaranteeing a right to life, such as the 14th Amendment. Abortion was read into the “right to privacy,” three words which themselves don’t exist in the Constitution. Democrats should praise their stars that they have that much; even then, it isn’t enough. Now they want those of us who are pro-life to fork over our dollars to an organization that exterminates more unborn babies (millions of them) than any other. It’s downright obscene.

The Democratic Party has truly lost it.

It took Democrats a while to get there, but, finally, almost a century after the launching of the Bolshevik Revolution and Margaret Sanger’s organization, they’ve finally arrived at where Sanger and the Soviets found common ground. They indeed act as if, as Sanger said about Stalin’s Russia, “birth control… is part of the regular service of the government.”

The saddest thing of all is that neither they, nor their supporters, nor America, seem to comprehend the outrageousness of their position.

And, it is immoral to have my wealth stolen in the form of taxation, inflation, and debt to pay for something I believe is morally abhorrent.

What is everyone waiting for?

Secession is the only remedy!
