6th-Grade Class Is Offered A Gift of College Tuition
By Dale Mezzacappa INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The 112 sixth-grade students and their families sitting in the sweltering auditorium had never before seen the blond woman at the podium. Yet she was promising to change their lives.

“That means,” Weiss repeated, her voice quivering with excitement, “if each and every youngster on this stage graduates from high school with a diploma and is accepted at college or a technical-training school, we’ll pay all costs of tuition. “

“Everything,” she affirmed.

[JR: I'd assume that they've deposited the requisite amount in a trust. 112 * 60k * 4 ≈ 2½ M$. That's a tremendous gift. Stunning. Wish I could afford to do something like that. But, most of us didn't do as well with the talents we were given. Remember the talents in that old book? And, the widow's mite. Humbling? I am.]

Manhattan College Buzzer Beater

Today is rapidly becoming an extremely exciting day of basketball. You had St. John’s upsetting the third-ranked Duke Blue Devils, the Heat beating the Thunder in one of the most well-played games of the season, and the Celtics and Lakers are currently battling in the Staples Center, which is always great. So it’s no surprise that tiny Manhattan College’s win over Marist got lost in the mix.

Even though the win came on a half-court buzzer beater. Watch video of the most exciting (and improbable) way a game of hoops can end:

JEMAIL: Jablon, Ken (MC1962) remembers rain on RFK’s MC day

Thanks for coming up with a copy of RFK’s speech. I graduated in 1962 but I have to admit, I don’t remember any of the speech (of course it was almost 49 years ago. I do remember that I thought it was a big deal that the Attorney General of the US (and the President’s brother) was giving the address. It was pouring rain that day, so the commencement was indoors. But there was not enough room in one building for all of the graduates and I was not in the building that RFK delivered the address but heard it on speakers. In reviewing the speech, it was not a great presentation. It wondered around without any central theme. But I have to give him credit (or his staff) for reading the history of the college and referring to a number of incidents . The 159 page document that he alluded to was history of the college that was published in 1953 which was the 100 anniversary of its founding. I received a copy as an incoming freshmen but I certainly did not read the whole thing.

Ken Jablon ’62 BBA

[JR: Hey, you're welcome. But the that's have to go to some unknown Federal employee who scanned it and put it online. I think I see a Big Gooferment Socialist theme, but maybe my tin foil hat is too tight. We'll have to see if any one has a copy of that 159 page history in any form and I can put it on the back lot. I'm trying for the Humane Letters PhD.]

http://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com/2011/01/03/where-was-manhattans-lost-town-of-carmanville/

*** begin quote ***

The image identified above as “[NYPL postcard of 155th and Amsterdam Avenue in 1917—the remains of Carmanville?]” is neither a postcard nor Carmansville. It depicts the little wooden railroad depot at the foot of West 130th Street by the Hudson River at Manhattanville, a town established in 1806. This was the first northbound stop on the Hudson River Railroad. The newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln stopped here on February 20, 1861, then once again in death as his funeral train passed by on April 25, 1865. The depot was demolished in about 1920. In the central background stands Manhattan College (now in Riverdale, The Bronx) and the steeple of the Church of the Annunciation on the Boulevard (now Broadway) at West 131st Street. The image was most likely made in the early 1870s after the grading of Broadway and the re-modeling of the College. This image and others of the depot, college and church are featured in my book, “Manhattanville: Old Heart of West Harlem”: http://www.amazon.com/Manhattanville-Heart-Harlem-Images-America/dp/0738509868

MOBIT: Myra Ellen Mahon, wife of Mahon, Arthur J. [MC1955]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/nytimes/Obituary.aspx?pid=148276868

MYRA MAHON

MAHON–Myra Ellen. Myra Ellen Mahon (nee Murphy) passed peacefully at home in Delray Beach, Florida, on Saturday, January 29, 2011, embraced and enveloped by the love and caring presence of her dear and cherished husband of 54 years, Arthur J. Mahon, and her four beloved children, Maura, Donna, Arthur and Nancy. Myra was also the dear Nana to her two grandchildren, Christopher and Emelia, and a wonderful mother-in-law to Susan who were holding her hand in spirit when she passed.

Myra’s date of passing was the Feast Day of Saint Thomas Aquinas, a day that her husband Arthur treasures and holds close to his heart, because on the day when he first met his beautiful, seventeen year-old wife-to-be at a Manhattan College dance, she told him she was reading the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Born in New York City on April 15, 1937 to James H. Murphy, from County Clare, and Mary Murphy (nee Caroon) from Westmeath, Ireland, Myra was always proud of, and true to, her roots in the Bronx and Ireland. She is predeceased by her parents, her deeply loved sister, Clare, and sisters-in-law, Mary Therese and Delia Rose. Her baby sister, Nula, who Myra loved dearly, survives her. Myra is also survived by her nieces, Maria O’Leary and Diane Slote, to whom she became a surrogate mother after their mothers’ deaths, and by twenty other wonderful nieces and nephews from the Neil Mahon, Fitzpatrick, Burris, Thanhauser, and Slote families who were blessed to spend many weekends, Christmases, Thanksgivings, ski trips and also summers in Madison and Candlewood Lake, Connecticut, with their beautiful, generous, wise, funny and slightly irreverent Aunt Myra.

A kid from Woodycrest Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, Myra lived from childhood with enormous intelligence, passion, elegance, conviction and concern for the underdog and the underserved. When the family moved to Queens, she attended St. Agnes High School in College Point. Married at the age of 20 to her love, Arthur, she returned to college as a young mother of four and graduated from Marymount, Tarrytown, summa cum laude as the valedictorian of her class, going on to earn her Masters in Social Work with high honors from Fordham University.

Myra initiated her business career as a social worker at the United Way of Tristate in New York City, rising rapidly to Executive Vice President overseeing corporate partnerships and giving. She went on to become the Development Director of the Archdiocese of New York where she was fueled by her passion for raising funds for children to attend inner-city Catholic primary schools like the one she attended, Sacred Heart.

An extraordinary team builder, mentor and leader, Myra took great joy and pride in the many people she worked alongside of, and she forever cherished their shared accomplishments and victories. Myra also lent her enormous energy and passion for social justice as a Member of the Board of Directors of a legion of wonderful organizations that embodied her unending commitment to giving all people the opportunity to live full, dignified and joyful lives. Those organizations included Marymount College, Women In Need, New York Foundation, Calvary Hospital and Hospice, New York State Parks and Recreation Commission, Museum of the City of New York and the Healthcare Chaplaincy. Myra took great joy serving for many years as the Co-Chair of the Women’s Health Symposium at Weill Cornell Medical Center with her very dear friend and fellow New Yorker, Joan Weill.

Myra was surprised five years ago when her loving husband, Arthur, told her that the second floor of the Weill Cornell Medical College’s new building under construction at 1305 York Avenue in New York City would contain a resource center and it would be named in her honor. She was so pleased that the Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center included reading rooms and a library to help patients and families learn about and manage their illnesses. Upon its completion, Myra personally dedicated the Center “To those who serve unseen.”

Myra’s immediate family and her personal assistant, Joan Hanebury, whom Myra loved dearly, attended a private memorial mass on Monday, January 31, 2011, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, Palm Beach, Florida, to honor and bless her memory. How appropriate and meaningful it is that Monday was the feast day of St. John Bosco, who dedicated his life to the education of poor children. There will be a mass celebrating Myra’s life and all of her many loves, joys and accomplishments at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City in the Spring.

Donations in Myra’s memory can be made to the Inner City Scholarship Fund of the Archdiocese of New York (Ms. Helen Lowe (212)371-1011, ext. 3325) for the Myra Mahon Fund for students at the Sacred Heart School in the Bronx, or to the Weill Cornell Medical College (Mr. Larry Schafer (212)746-4070) for the support of the Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center.

Myra blessed the many people she loved with her warm spirit, endless wisdom, grace and intuitive gift for understanding and helping them. She leaves us with the memory of her sharing her favorite Irish prayer, “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rain fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of His hand.”

Weakening of Catholic identity contributes to school enrollment decline, cautions professor
Dr. John J. Convey

Denver, Colo., Jan 18, 2011 / 06:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In the wake of the Archdiocese of New York recently closing 27 of its schools, conversation on the sharp decline of Catholic school enrollment has once again been ignited. One education expert says a weakening of Catholic identity is a primary factor in the school closures.

Dr. John J. Convey, who holds the title of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Professor of Education at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., also explained that a lack of school-aged children and waning pastoral leadership have also significantly contributed to school closures.

Enrollment in Catholic elementary schools has dropped 15 percent nationwide since 2001-02 school year, reported the National Catholic Educational Association. In 2006 and 2007 in the U.S., 212 Catholic schools were closed or consolidated.

The education expert added that families without sufficient income to afford tuition can be a problem which is “exacerbated if adequate tuition assistance is not available.”

“In some cases, money is an issue; families can’t afford the tuition and insufficient tuition assistance is available to help them. In other cases, parents are unwilling to pay for a Catholic school if they perceive that the public schools, charter schools or other private schools in their area are adequate.”

Dr. Convey also noted that accusations of sex abuse by clergy have “had an impact on diocesan budgets from huge legal settlements.”

“Strong Catholic schools strengthen all other programs of evangelization, service, catechesis and sanctification,” he wrote. “The entire church suffers when Catholic schools disappear.”

[JR: Recognize that I'm just a fat old white guy injineer who's a lost cause. I ain't no saint. But this seems OBVIOUS to me. Competing against a "free service" is impossible. In my lifetime, the Jewish community recognized it and had strong after school education. Only an idiot bangs their head against reality! The scandal of "Pedophile Priest" destroys the "brand" while simultaneously gaging the Church. imho! There needs to be an aggressive multi-prong approach to reverse the decline: (1) Purge any hint of pedophiles or homosexuals -- charitably, lovingly, but strictly out the door. People must know that their children are safe. Period. No exception. No excuses. (2) Reconstitute "Catholic Education" on a profit-making basis -- heresy? No margin; no mission. Adopt technology and home-schooling big time. And rigorous examinations. Make a Catholic School diploma mean something in the Marketplace. Like an Eagle Scout. (3) Vigorously attack "Gooferment Skrules" on a First Amendment basis. It's an ongoing infringement of religious liberty. (4) Use famous "Catholics" to SELL the religion. You have to admire the Jehovah's Witnesses for their willingness to get out. Every discipline should be enlisted to help -- Economists, Historians, Techies. Thomas E. Woods, Jr. does more to advance the brand than any writer I know. (5) Reestablish the "brand". Deny CINO politicians and bureaucrats the ability to give scandal. Doing any less is as big a sin.]
