-NYU students all claim to “hate most other NYU students” due to their cynical nature, hipster fashion sense and negative attitudes, but they love their school’s reputation and the location of their school (Greenwich Village, of course) and their knowledgeable professors. I, on the other hand, generally like most Manhattan College students because of their sense of humor, positive attitudes, and the east coast suburban upbringing I’m familiar with. I don’t mind Manhattan College’s reputation, and while it’s not as good as NYU’s, it does have some very knowledgeable professors. Being in the Bronx has made me respect and love New York’s outer boroughs in a way most NYU students do not. Especially since most of them think Washington Heights and Morningside Heights are in the Bronx. Even so, I really like the friends I’ve met this semester. I feel like I did fit in with the other NYU students, being a bit of a hipster and a cynic myself. I hope to see some of the people I’ve met when school starts again in New York in a few weeks.

On a serious note, have you written your autobiography? I’m absolutely serious. With the advent of self-publishing, it’s almost easy. If you create the content, pushing it through to a printed book is almost trivial. I did my first one as a joke, and my Mom LOVED it. She couldn’t read it but she kept it out where she could see it all the time. :-) I guess I’m inspired by the Foxfire series of books where a bunch of college kids collected all the old timer’s stories in the West Virginia Appalachian rural areas. Every time I read a Jasper obit, I wonder what he could have told us. And, that that person left with their song unsung. Can’t imagine all the fantastic Jasper lore you have locked away. The nice thing about self-publishing is that it doesn’t have to please any one but you.

Where did you start in finance and what experiences led you to the job you have today?
I started my career in public accounting back in 1973 and passed the CPA exam in May of 1974. Just to show you how long ago that was, there was only one FASB pronouncement out then but it wasn’t out for six months so we didn’t need to know it for the CPA exam.
I was fortunate to have a wide variety of both financial and non-financial experiences over my career, all of which in combination seemed to prepare me well for becoming a public company CFO and taking companies down the IPO path. My longest tenure was with AT&T and then Lucent Technologies after the spin off in 1996. I had several financial roles there, including being CFO of a $6 billion business unit, and managing a very small team with the remit of taking a domestic product line to international markets. The international experience was invaluable in learning to deal with cultural and technical financial issues across borders.
My first public company CFO experience was with Indus International, an enterprise asset management software company, which had a major contract with the U.K. Ministry of Defense suspended right before I joined. We spent nine quarters getting the company back to profitability and were able to raise some capital on Wall Street and do a couple acquisitions, which along with some significant downsizing, brought the company back to profitability. I guess it was the job I did there that gave our financial sponsors the idea that I could be a good candidate to take a communications company in their portfolio public. That company was NeuStar, which we took public in 2005 and it was the Renaissance Capital and IFS IPO of the Year for 2005. That success got me to Sophos in 2009, which was acquired by a U.K. private equity firm just as we were about to hold our IPO organizational meeting. Since Sophos didn’t need a public company CFO in the U.S., I like to say that both Lebron James and Jeff Babka became free agents on July 1, 2010! Lebron “took his talents to South Beach” and after a couple of months of relaxation, I took mine to the Big Apple when Doug Stevenson, Vibrant Media’s co-founder and CEO, offered me the opportunity to join them as CFO on Sept. 1.

Tomorrow I Paya somebody deposit to the school, then they will send my I-20 (proof that I have come in to school) . This was a bit of a shock, yeah, I was pretty giant sure I could get into, but I thought hell it would take nature at least two more weeks to get everything ready. But the coach has apparently managed to put together everything anyway. And some papers could be given to fix after it has been accepted, they have only themselves competing for the school to do, and no admissions to the school, which I thought before.

Lillian Theresa Younker, 84, died on Wednesday January 5, 2011. Beloved daughter of the late Aloysius and Annie Younker she was born the youngest of nine children on June 6, 1926. Lillian is preceded in death by her siblings Gene, Jack, Sr. Mary Paul, RSM, Anna Mae, Joe, and Jimmy Younker and Grace Niehoff. She is survived by her brother Paul Younker, Paducah, Ky., and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her lifelong friends and extended family, Sharon Whitley and Kateri Whitley (Lil’s Precious). Others Lillian considered her family include the Sisters of Mercy (Cincinnati Province), Sr. Doris Gerke, OSC, Ben, Eileen, Benjamin & Emily Youngblood, many in the CCVI, Oblate, CDP, Brigidine, Assumption High School, St. Francis of Assisi Communities, and many, many others who would take pages to list but know who they are.
Lillian left home at 15 to enter religious life and was professed a Religious Sister of Mercy in 1946 to serve as a teacher in Paducah and Louisville Kentucky. She was a counselor, Director of Novices, and mentor to many who to this day kept in contact with her. She attended the Athenaeum of Ohio, St. Louis University, and Manhattan College where she earned numerous undergrad and graduate degrees.
In 1969 Lillian joined the Archdiocese of Louisville Kentucky staff as the Director of Religious Education/Faith Formation. During that time Lillian challenged many issues, but most notably the equal pay for all staff, both men and women alike. In 1975 she began her own consulting and training company, Organization Development Company which led her to conduct nursing management/ leadership workshops, training foreman for Ford Motor Company in Minneapolis/St. Paul, career counseling and skills development with women who were going through career changes, and leadership workshops for parish councils and religious communities. Lillian moved to Texas in 1979 to pursue the same type of career path doing work with McFann-Gray Assoc. In 1982 she began her journey as Academic Dean at the Oblate School of Theology where she remained for 15 years. While at Oblate she mentored a number of women and helped them see themselves as professional ministers in the Church. Some of those women are the great leaders in our Church today.
After awhile in retirement she was recruited to become the Executive Director of the Catholic Counseling & Consultation Center setting up a satellite clinic and placing counselors in the Catholic Schools of San Antonio. Her last retirement found her rocking the babies at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church nursery where most of the children called her Tia, Grandma, or just Ms. Lil. Lillian was a woman of great compassion, faith, and most of all LOVE.
While Lil’s many accomplishments in no way define her, they are indicative of her value as an educator, mentor, confidant, and friend. She had a gift for making each person with her feel special and gave of herself tirelessly.
Our family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Melba Beine and the staff of Vitas Hospice for their care and kindness during Lillian’s journey to the Father. Rest in God’s love and our memories my “Beautiful Rose”.
Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday January 8, 2011 at 10:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 4201 De Zavala. Burial will take place at St. John’s Catholic Church and Cemetery in Paducah Kentucky at 1:00 pm on Saturday January 15, 2011. The family requests that donations be made to: Vitas Hospice Services, 5430 Fredericksburg Road #200, San Antonio, Texas 78229 or to the Monastery of St. Clare, 1505 Miles Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.

Or a one-armed man. This story reminded us of Kevin Laue, the Manhattan College sophomore who made waves a couple of years ago when he received a scholarship offer to play for the Jaspers despite having only one upper appendage. The 6’10 center is not yet producing as much as Otule with only fourteen points and fourteen rebounds on the season, but his minutes have increased to double figures in three of his last six games and everyone continues to marvel with the skills he has developed despite playing with such a major competitive deficiency. Given the barriers to excellence in this game that he’s already overcome, we have absolutely no doubt that, like Otule, he’ll find a way to make himself valuable.
Laue and Otule are inspirational stories that serve to remind us that many things that seem impossible are quite possible with reasoned acceptance of one’s circumstances and the right attitude. If you think you doubt yourself too much, can you imagine how many times these two guys have let such demons into their own minds? Or how often they heard from people that they should probably think about doing something else other than basketball with their free time? All of us have flaws, but few of us have actual physical deficiencies such as theirs; yet we’d all do well to remember the lesson that these two young men teach us. The human body is an adaptable entity — if you’re unhappy with something about it, you can work to change it. Most everything else is just excuses.

Peter Francis Dolan (1942-2011)Peter F. Dolan passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2011, in Hartford Hospital, Connecticut, after a courageous struggle with lung cancer. He was 68. Born on November 8, 1942, to Peter and Agnes Dolan (née Waters) Peter grew up in Good Shepherd Parish in the Inwood neighborhood of northern Manhattan. He attended Good Shepherd Grammar School, graduating in 1956. From there he went on to Manhattan Prep, from which he graduated in 1960, and Manhattan College, where he received his degree in 1969.
Peter was gifted with warmth, intellect and wit and possessed a beautiful tenor voice, which was regularly on display in the Good Shepherd choir, and the Manhattan Prep and Manhattan College Glee Clubs. As a young boy, while others his age were discovering rock and roll, Peter became infatuated with opera and in particular with Irish Tenor John McCormack. He became a McCormack scholar, writing and editing numerous articles on the famous singer and contributing to the John McCormack Discography Project of the John McCormack Society. http://www.mccormacksociety.co.uk/
Peter’s passions included traditional Irish music, and during the 1970s and 80s he periodically hosted Friday night seisiúns at the now-defunct Eagle Tavern on West 14th Street in Manhattan. He also pursued keen interests in photography, writing, history and the politics of New York City. During his time in New York, Peter worked at Keshkerrigan – the noted and now-closed bookstore in Lower Manhattan, specializing in Irish and Irish-language books – and for a brief period, in the office of Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer.
In the 1990s, Peter relocated to Hartford, where he continued his interests in writing, photography and music. Most recently, he was known to exercise his tenor vocal chords at the Wednesday night seisiúns at McKinnon’s Irish Pub located at 114 Asylum Street in Hartford.
Peter leaves no known surviving blood relatives, but does have his classmates from Manhattan Prep, who are overseeing the final arrangements for their dearly departed “brother”.

A funeral Mass for the repose of Peter’s soul will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at the Church of the Good Shepherd Church, 4967 Broadway New York, NY 10034. Following the Mass we will deliver Peter’s ashes to St. Mary’s Cemetery, 114 Sprain Road, Yonkers, NY 10710, to be interred alongside the remains of his parents. A reception honoring Peter’s memory will be held immediately thereafter at Rory Dolan’s Restaurant & Bar, 890 McLean Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704.

[JR: I was always taught at MC to watch "absolute-ism". Any time you think there are "no exceptions", God, The Fates, The Universe will present you with evidence of how wrong you are. Readers here now I'm simultaneously "pro-choice" and "pro-life". I just don't want the Gooferment telling us what to do. I don't want them quietly, or not so quietly, advocating or paying for abortions. I think that killing a potential human being should be newsworthy rarity. Not an every day occurrence. I'm sure, that in rare instances, there are tough close calls. The Tebow commercial is evidence of that. But, when we adopt an "absolute" position, we set up the Gooferment to "police" the "action". That's force. Perhaps, we need the medical community to conduct a review. Perhaps, we need hospitals, where these are performed, to have an "ethical review" (i.e., an abortion is not presumed to be OK). Perhaps, we need more options. What we don't need is "freezing" positions or empowering Gooferment. imho.]
