POSITRACTION: Rodriguez, Vincent [MC1984] captures the “holiday spirit”

“A Crowd of People Turned Away…”
Fifth Avenue, New York City

[JR: This captures the "holiday spirit". Makes me want to be more generous to the less fortunate. Not just a handout, but a hand up. When I worked in "The City", I "wrestled" with panhandlers. Not literally, but emotionally. I felt good when I could be charitable. But, I'm a NuYawker and no one's sucker. So I'd carry with my business cards, cards for priest at the local Wall Street church I donated to. When I was asked for help, I write my name on the back of the card, and passed it out. Then at the next First Friday mass (Yeah, I was a "Holy Roller" in those days), I'd ask the pastor if I had any "redemptions". I'd average about six per year. Of course, I'd fork over if more funds were needed. That was the wager! (Hey, I was rolling in dough in those days. Spent like a drunken sailor. Now, I just have the hangover.) If asked for food, I'd offer to buy a meal. Only was taken up once on that in decades of offering. Maybe I should have done more. Been not so "busy" and cared more. I hope you find this picture a "positive" as I have. After being called out, about the Irish Kid's robbery, for being a "downer; rather than positive", I felt I had to explain this one.]

John.

Please feel free to use my photo post. The more people I can touch with my photos, the happier I am. The photo especially hits home for me as it was taken on December 11, 2010 in the middle of 5th Avenue with all the holiday shoppers around. I was amazed at the image and hopefully this can be transmitted to the viewer of the photo as it was such a powerful and sad image. Happy Holidays to you and thank you for your interest in my work!

[JR: Jasper Vincent84 is too modest to mention this, so I will. Fat old white guy injineers arent very sensitive. I was told once that I think 'tact' is something you hit with a hammer. So FYI, he "does" photography as a sideline. If you need some snaps taken (I'm sure he will shudder when he reads his "art" described as "snap"; like Jasper Breen, when I call his work "toons". Whadda ya want from a barbarian from down the hill?) then you should give him a call or email. In the interest of full disclosure, I get nothing for this "advertisement". Gooferment regulations about blogs; what don't they understand about the First Amendment?]

John: Here’s my latest cartoon, suggested by a friend of mine, Michael Sazhin, who’s a parrot trainer in New Jersey. I think it’s a great illustration of the folly of big spending. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Sincerely, Jerry Breen

JEMAIL: O’Connell, Bill (MC1976) cites private charity helped Bob Cratchit

Note to Don Stebbins. At the end of the Christmas Carol movie what was the name of the government program that helped the Cratchits out? Oh wait, it was faith and private charity. Now I feel better and can continue fighting against the grow in government in 2011 with a clear conscience, promoting faith and charity. Render unto Caesar…

Bill O’Connell, 1976

[JR: LOL! Now don't tease the "Secular Progressive" big-Gooferment fellow alumni. Besides there are a lot clergy who have mixed up "economics" as well. Just a year or two ago, I was in a tift with with Brother President about "Social Justice" and the minimum wage. Of course, I felt that a minimum wage of zero was appropriate; he didn't. I just had to defer to his position and my usual ATDA ("agree to disagree agreeably"). His parting shot was "Can't believe that MC could graduate a Engineer without charity". Argh! So putting someone on the dole is "more charitable" than empowering them to solve their own problems. Imagine a world without theft by Gooferment (i.e., confiscatory taxes) and it's hard to imagine that we'd have "Starving Poverty". People might be "poor", but not hurting. Sigh! Maybe next year.]

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) read Gospels during frosh year at MC

DEAR JASPER JOHN,

I have mixed feeling about your admission that you are an admirer of Ebenezer Scrooge and other hardhearted people. On the one hand my ability to analyze the source of attitudes is affirmed; on the other hand I am disappointed that people actually do have such attitudes. It seems the Gospels are not properly understood and/or absorbed in many cases. I have never found any part of the Gospel that says that the only people we should help are those who help themselves. I read the Gospels during my freshman year at Manhattan and soon later became a liberal Democrat greatly influenced by what I had read.

I do have to admit that your devotion to materialism and Scrooge goes beyond my expectations. I can only imagine what a horrible world we would live in if most people lived by your principles. Try following your ideas to their logical conclusion – every man and woman for themselves – would quickly lead to oblivion and the end of the human race

When I first viewed a version of “A Christmas Carol” in Sunday School at Holy Rosary Church in the Bronx Circa 1948 I never realized I was being subject to “gooferment” propaganda- I thought then as I do now that the movie was teaching the words and spirit of Christ.

Happy New Year-

I suggest you begin the year by reading the Gospels again with an open mind.

No fair looking at Limbaugh or FOX during breaks

Sincerely yours
Donald M Stebbins

Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961)

[JR: <1> Sigh, I don't think, that calling "foul" on moochers and insisting that true charity is "voluntary", is being "hard hearted". (People think I'm usually a soft touch for a sob story.) What I do with MY wealth is my business; what the Gooferment robs from me to "do welfare" is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. <2> Where in the world did you get the idea that I'm for dog eat dog everyone for themselves? I just don't want to be TOLD by the gang in power, with fancy flags and costumes, that I will support multi-generational "welfare farmers" and a huge number of rich folks who have figured out how to game the system. If a "free society", "greed" will motivate people to cooperate. Review "I, Pencil" for a great exposition of how much better humans cooperate when they are free to seek their own self-interest. <3> Sorry, but what your "liberal Democrat" ilk have brought us, with the enthusiastic cooperation of the "conservative Republicans" ilk, (this supposed duopoly in itself is a fraud on the people) is to create a dysfunctional world where everyone tries to live at everyone else's expense. If this was a rowboat, we'd know we have too much dead weight. The incentives are all wrong. <4> Sure, you were being brainwashed by the good Nuns. You just couldn't see the bias. Now you've formed your world view based on ideas that could use some reexamining imho. Just start from the principal that you own you and no one has the right to FORCE you to do anything. The Gooferment crumbles under that lens. <5> ATDA!]

http://www.stjohns-chs.org/theatre/Carol/AChristmasCarol-script.html

Dear Jasper John,

You really admire and want us to emulate this guy?

You can not be serious and must be pulling my leg.

If I thought you were serious about boiling people who say “Merry Christmas”:

I’d report you to Bill O’Reilly

Don Stebbins

# – # – #

Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961)

[JR: <1> Of course, I'm serious. <2> He's as free as the Gooferment will allow him to be. Pursuing that which makes him happy. Remember "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" or the alternate form "Life, Liberty, and Property". See it's all about "who owns you". Past, Present, and Future. If I own me, (and I have "free will" as some religions tell me I do), then how can I be forced to make choices that you or anyone thinks "are for my own good". <3> Good Old Eb was making his contribution to society; providing accounting services that people wanted and along the way providing employment to Dumb Old Bob. As others have pointed out, Eb must be paying Bob what he's worth since he's still working there. We can debate that Eb might be happier by sharing. But it should be voluntary; not under force or threat there of. <4> Unfortunately, Christmas has been taken over by Big Business and commercialism. It should be a time of "Good Samaritans"; not conspicuous consumption. I'll say Merry when it really means something. <5> BO'R, at least, is honest. Unfortunately, he's not very Libertarian. And, he has a "blind spot" with respect to Obama's birth certificate. I think he's wrong on some issues, but, unlike the "Lame Stream Media", he doesn't do "news" with a hidden bias, like Walter Cronkite.]

We gather tonight to celebrate that when the baby Jesus was born in the barn in Bethlehem, the light of God’s love broke yet again into the world. At Christmas, we pray for God’s light to break specifically into our personal, spiritual darkness.

[JR: Jasper Stebbins was nice enough to share a sermon from the Christmas season. (Too long for inclusion, but it's only a click away.) But everyone fails to "love the sinner". And, everyone is so worried about "fixing" him, they miss the "mote in their own eye". Instead of denigrating good old Eb, they should be seeking their own salvation.]

JNEWS: Benefit given for Kranichfeld, Andrew “Chowder” [MC2008]

Chowder Cup to Raise Money for Former Garnets Hockey Player
A fundraiser will be held today at Playland Ice Casino for a former Garnets hockey player diagnosed with a brain tumor.
By Michael Iachetta | Email the author | December 27, 2010

*** begin quote ***

Even though he has been blind since August, former Rye High School hockey player Andrew (Chowder) Kranichfeld plans to be on hand today at Playland Ice Casino for the first of what promises to become an annual fundraising event called the Chowder Cup.

The Chowder Cup is the latest of several fundraisers thrown around Rye by Kranichfeld’s former high school classmates, fellow Garnets’ hockey players, and friends. The event will take place from 9:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.

The hockey scrimmage and ice skating outing is designed to raise funds for Chowder’s ongoing medical expenses for treatments for a brain tumor. He has experienced a series of tragic events that began last December, shortly after the death of his mother from cancer.

*** and ***

Chowder’s life took a turn earlier this year. He was working as a freelance production assistant on various films and TV shows, looking to land a full-time job after his graduation from Manhattan College and living in the Bronx.

In March, his mother, Karen, died of leukemia after a seven-year battle with the disease. Two days after her death, Chowder began having blurred vision and headaches, he said.

He immediately went to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and cancer, he said. He was put on chemotherapy and steroids after doctors misdiagnosed his condition. The tumor still kept pressing on his optical nerve, causing him to lose his eyesight, he said.

*** and ***

Chowder said he hopes the Chowder Cup becomes an annual tradition, one that will benefit him and others. But for now, he is steadily trying to move on with his life, looking forward to getting a guide dog and fine-tuning his computer skills. Urso said Chowder has taken all his struggles in stride.

“Nobody who knows him is really surprised with how well he is dealing with adversity.”

JEMAIL: O’Connell, Bill (MC1959) prefers “Bill the Elder”

John,

Providing “teachable moments” has been a hallmark of mine for years, so no thanks is necessary for providing you with one. I am always pleased to be of help. As to “presuming” to teach anyone anything, don’t let that bother you. I did it for thirty-seven years at William & Mary with no ill effects. I can’t speak for my students however.

In reference to changing email addresses, I did in fact formerly route everything to my home address via my “forever” email address at W&M, but despite a very large IT department they stopped the connection once without reason or notice. I noted a large drop off in incoming emails and when I contacted the IT people they had no explanation why I had been unceremoniously dropped. As to forever addresses, didn’t our alma mater once offer this service only to drop it without notice? One other reason not to use a forever address is that some of the chat rooms I belong to do not permit replies from other than the primary email address. This prevented me from replying at home so I dropped the forever address when I retired and was no longer emailing from W&M. As an older Liberal Arts man, I doubt that I could set up my own domain name, but thanks for the suggestion.

On a purely personal matter I hope you won’t object if I use “Bill the Elder” (with apologies to Pliny) instead of “Bill the older.” Thanks.

All the best.
Bill the Elder, ’59
Williamsburg, VA

[JR: <1> I guess the IT folks at W&M have a funny definition of "forever". <2> MC offered "@alum.manhattan.edu" with the debacle of Harris and the "Green Book". The old ones still work. They just didn't offer "new" ones. Not sure if you could change the destinations during the period after Harris but before Google. <3> I know there was an offering of ".alumni@manhattan.edu" "forever" addresses in conjunction with those who receive a postal issue on Manhattan Magazine. (I'm not sure what the status of others. I can ask if anyone's is interested.) <4> Domains are trivial. And, cheap. So, (imho), especially for alumni in the workforce or going into that workforce. The trick is to find a professional sounding name you can go a lifetime with. <5> You can call yourself "Bill the Exalted One" as long as you keep reading and participating in Jottings. LOL!]

[JR: The virtual Jasper Jottings Newsroom is always manned and ready. Well, almost always. But at least once a day. LOL, HNY! Hoping for a personally better one next year. Argh!]

JNEWS: Rizzotti, Matt [MC2007?] in off-season

Minor Jobs: How Prospects Spend Their Off-seasons
Posted by Jay Floyd, Thu, December 30, 2010 07:29 PM | Comments: 3

*** begin quote ***

As many fans know, not every baseball player gets a huge signing bonus or a large salary. Many minor league players find themselves working in the Autumn and Winter months to supplement their income and to stay busy. A question often wondered by fans: What do prospects do during the off-season? The answer is simple…pretty much anything and everything.

Phillies first base prospect Matt Rizzotti is an individual who typically finds himself working during his time away from the baseball diamond. However, Rizzotti is not working this Winter as a result of having spent much of this off-season continuing to play baseball. Following the 2010 regular season, Rizzotti went to instructional ball in Clearwater for a month, then spent another five weeks playing for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League, where he batted .333 with an .865 OPS in 19 games.

Last year, however, Rizzotti, who was a physical education major at Manhattan College, went back to his roots and worked as a full-time teaching assistant at the high school which he graduated from in Floral Park, NY. Rizzotti, a 6th round pick in the 2007 amateur draft, has also held one position in previous off-seasons that he enjoyed quite a bit, while working for a friend’s family. “My best friend’s father owns a haunted house in New York City and I usually work there every year too, from September through the month of October. I don’t even have to dress up, I just naturally scare people,” Rizzotti said in an exclusive interview.

ENDNOTE: Why do we fund “libraries” by force?

Let Trustees Do Their Job!

*** begin quote ***

Ruth Kowal of Boston Public Library called to ask me to help fight the Senate amendments to the State Budget that would deny State Aid and Library of Last Recourse funding if Boston closed or reduced staffing at any Branch. Ruth said a further amendment would make this proposal more “fair” by including any library with Branches. I told her I would spread the word to my SEMLS colleagues at the meeting, and Cindy Roach announced it from the podium. (We’ll miss you, Cindy!) I then wrote to Brockton’s State Senator Thomas Kennedy thanking him for proposing an amendment to increase the amount of State Aid, and asking him to help fight the Branch related amendments. Decisions on how to best utilize the limited resources are best made by local Boards of Library Trustees who are entrusted to serve the needs of local constituents!

[JR: Guess it’s not politically correct to pick a fight with an alumni I just found, but I’m just an opinionated fat old white guy injineer with a Don Quixote complex. Doesn’t anyone see that this is EXACTLY what the politicians and bureaucrats want? Citizens coming with hat in hand to grovel for some more gruel! And, why should the taxpayers be robbed by the costumed thugs to pay for a library. Or, anything else? I willingly pay to go to a movie, McDonalds, or anyone of a number of other things. Why are libraries different? Wikipedia cites: “In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and his friends, sometimes called “the Junto”, operated the Library Company of Philadelphia partly as a means to settle arguments and partly as a means to advance themselves through sharing information. Franklin’s subscription library allowed members to buy “shares” and combined funds were used to buy more books; in return, members could borrow books and use the library.” What’s wrong with that model. Or, any other one. Any model but one where the effete elite tell us we must pay for something that is “good for us”. Like we are little children. Sorry, but if it was needed, it would NOT have to be funded by force. Argh! “We, The Sheeple” are stupid to allow this.]
