POSITRACTION: Pro-Life Leader threatened

Ohio Democrat Threatens Pro-Life Leader with Jail
by Connie Hair
10/20/2010

*** begin quote ***

I’m Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life organization.

Congressman Steve Driehaus is threatening my organization with a criminal statute in a desperate attempt to silence us.

Steve Driehaus doesn’t want you to know the truth … … but you deserve to hear it.

Steve Driehaus voted for taxpayer funding of abortion when he cast his vote for the health care reform bill.

Every major pro-life group in the country agrees that the health care reform bill allows for taxpayer funding of abortion , including National Right to Life, Americans United for Life, Ohio Right to Life, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

We will not be silenced or intimidated.

Driehaus voted for taxpayer funding of abortion.

And that vote has consequences.

Paid for by the Susan B. Anthony List, which is responsible for the content of this advertisement. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. sba-list.org.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Clearly the D's are running from their votes. Not that the R's are much better. That any legislator can attempt to stifle free speech is scary. I'd say that if it was either side of this terrible horrifying genocide. Everyone deserves to speak their mind. No matter how looney. We need ideas out in the open. Just as clearly, this will be a momentous election. I hope all Jaspers do their duty as they see it. Whatever that duty is.]

JEMAIL: Dans, Peter E. (MC1957) finds an inspirational military story

This is an incredible testament to the medics and the transporters. In this time when our president and others apologize for America, this makes me proud to be an American and not for the first time like Michelle Obama. Would I have done the same thing in their position. I’d like to think I would have but one never knows until the rubber meets the road.

Dans, Peter E. (MC1957)

[JR: You have to admire a fellow, or gal, with bowling balls for stones. Greater love hath. Personally, I'm a fan of Ron Paul's strategy. Get on the first thing smoking coming in this direction. "We, The People" need to "help" our politicians understand that our Army stops at the coast or border. We forget this at the peril of a lot of good women and men, or boys and girls. Argh!]

What a miracle story! Get out the tissues and say a prayer of thanksgiving.

Forward it – if you’ve a mind to do so.

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) about the right to organize

Dear Fjohn,

It is amazing to me to see how often Catholic institutions work hard to deny workers their right to organize. I am not a big union fan (when I worked for CUNY and SUNY, many years ago – I opted to pay an “agency shop” fee rather than be compelled to join a union) but a clear teaching from Pope Leo’s encyclical “Rerum Novarum” is that workers should be free to join unions if they choose. It is disappointing to see that alma mater would go to the trouble and expense of hiring a special counsel to fight the simple attempt to organize.

[JR: I'm not an encyclical kinda guy. Us fat old white guy injineers get headaches when we read all them fancy words with no formulas or numbers. But, I just smell a Secular Progressive "rat". My question is 'why is a union needed'?]

Missing Three Credits? Expect to Stay in School Another Three Months

*** begin quote ***

Out of the eighteen courses that are required among the Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism, and Public Relations concentrations in order to graduate, only seven are offered next semester. In addition, out of the 300 required courses among students in the School of Arts, Business, Engineering and Science, and all of their concentrations, only 107 are offered.

Rich Baxter, a transfer student and Public Relations major, had been eager for the release of available courses, as he was anticipating graduating in the spring. “There are no communications courses,” he over-exaggerated that same day, clearly frustrated. “They don’t even have the classes I need to take before I graduate. As of now I’m stuck taking two electives.” Even though his eyes were hidden from behind studded shades, they were obviously being rolled.

His only hope to fulfill his requirements would be the school’s Winterim courses, which oddly enough have not been released yet.

*** and ***

Besides lack of interest, technological inadequacies have made it impossible for students to register for some required classes.

Manhattan College’s ‘Self-Service’ program is hated among all undergraduates especially when the dreaded registration period rears it’s ugly head. On the days when registration is open, student’s set their alarms for the crack of dawn, where they then scramble to log onto the server and register for their desired classes before each is filled, if they’re lucky.

Without fail, each semester the server gets “overloaded” and students are unable to log in, helpless behind their computer screen as their courses fill up. Once the classes are filled its simply ‘tough luck’ for these students, who are then forced to take courses that are unnecessary just so they can fill their schedule.

For students facing the possibility of having to stay an extra semester at Manhattan College, there are very few options. Like Baxter, students may have to rely on winter courses to fulfill their requirements, or take courses at another college and transfer the credits (if Manhattan College will accept the other school’s credits).

JEMAIL: Martin, Margaret (MC1998) pediatric cancer research fundraiser

Hello all!

Heartfelt thanks to those of you who have left encouraging notes for Mike as the big day approaches! The NYC Marathon is 11 days away (AHHHH!) and he can definitely use the support. Training the second time around has been especially difficult – I guess that is what having 4 young kids and a demanding job will do to you – gets hard to “sneak” in a 20 mile run! :)

Caitlin is currently in remission (YAY) and returns to Sloan Kettering next Wednesday for bloodwork. Her next bone marrow biopsy and spinal tap will be in December. We pray for her continued health and good results! Yet again, Caitlin will be outside Sloan Kettering on Marathon Day to cheer for her daddy as he runs past the most remarkable cancer center treating her and her little friends! For those of you that follow Caitlin’s story on her CaringBridge site, Caitlin will also be cheering for her special friend Russell who used to volunteer in the pediatric playroom. We are humbled that he is also running with Fred’s Team in honor of Caitlin.

Sincerest thanks to those of you who have already donated to a cause so near and dear to our hearts! If you have been meaning to donate, there is still time!

The Grosvenors, a storied Washington family and heirs to Alexander Graham Bell, will conclude 122 consecutive years of stewardship over the National Geographic Society at the end of the year when Gilbert M. Grosvenor retires as chairman of the board of trustees.

Grosvenor, 79, announced his retirement before a standing-room-only crowd — fittingly — in the Grosvenor Auditorium at the Society’s headquarters, just a few blocks from the White House.

‘It’s time to go,’ said Grosvenor, reached at his farm near Warrenton. ‘I’ve done my thing. It’s time for other people to have their turn. I don’t think it’s proper for an institution like the Geographic Society, which is tied to adventure, science and exploration, to have a chairman approaching 80 years of age.’

He will be succeeded by Society President John M. Fahey, 58, who has held that position for 14 years.

Lightbridge Corporation Appoints James P. Malone as Chief Nuclear Fuel Development Officer
Brings 40 Years of Nuclear Fuel Development and Commercialization Experience to Lightbridge; Will Lead Company’s Nuclear Fuel Development Activities
GlobeNewswire
updated 10/28/2010 7:46:03 AM ET 2010-10-28T11:46:03

MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 28, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Lightbridge Corporation (Nasdaq:LTBR), the leading developer of non-proliferative nuclear fuel technology and provider of comprehensive advisory services for civil nuclear energy programs, today announced that James P. Malone has joined the Company as Chief Nuclear Fuel Development Officer. Mr. Malone will manage the Company’s day-to-day nuclear fuel design development efforts and will work closely with Lightbridge’s senior management team to advance the company’s proprietary fuel programs and bring added visibility with leading global nuclear interests.

In this role, Mr. Malone will develop strategies for the Company’s fuel technology development and commercialization, and work closely with Andrey Mushakov, EVP, International Nuclear Operations, to execute these strategies. Mr. Malone will also serve as the Company’s lead contact to nuclear fuel vendors and utilities.

“Jim will play an instrumental role in supporting our ongoing efforts to bring to commercialization our all-metal and thorium nuclear fuels,” said Seth Grae, CEO of Lightbridge. “Jim’s depth of nuclear fuel development experience, and work with leading utilities, is extensive and brings an added dynamic to our fuel design development team. We’re pleased that Jim has joined Lightbridge, and eager for him to apply his industry perspective with an eye on advancing our core capabilities.”

“I have known Seth and the Lightbridge management and advisory teams for many years. I’ve been impressed by the recent developments on the fuel design side of the business, including its work with all-metal nuclear fuel. The Company’s strong technological position, growth on the consulting side of the business, and strengthened presence as a leading voice and proponent of nuclear energy all were contributing factors to my joining Lightbridge,” added James Malone. “I look forward to getting to work and helping the Company move along the fuel design development process toward future commercialization.”

Mr. Malone brings to Lightbridge more than 40 years of experience in the development and commercialization of nuclear fuels. Before joining Lightbridge, he was Vice President, Nuclear Fuels at Exelon Generation Company, where he led the strategic direction and tactical guidance for the Company’s nuclear fuel cycle activities. In this role, he managed the procurement (uranium, conversion, enrichment, and fuel fabrication) for 17 operating nuclear reactors—PWRs and BWRs—and his expertise guided the management of spent fuel.

Prior to that, Mr. Malone served for ten years as vice president and senior consultant at NAC International, where he consulted on fuel reliability and the front and back ends of the nuclear fuel cycle, among other issues. Mr. Malone has also held positions at SWUCO and Yankee Atomic and began his career in the utility reactor core analysis section of the Nuclear Engineering Department of United Nuclear Corporation. Mr. Malone has also testified before the U.S. Senate on important international nuclear fuel and nuclear non-proliferation matters.

Mr. Malone holds a M.B.A. from Iona College and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Manhattan College. He also is a member of the American Nuclear Society.

WEBER

Biography: Weber, 50, has lived in Ramsey for 14 years with his wife, Donna, and their two children. He earned a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems from Manhattan College and an MBA in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also earned a graduate certificate in network communications management and is currently pursuing a master’s in project management from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management. He is currently employed by the New York Stock Exchange as the managing director of trading services and telecommunications. Prior to joining the Exchange, he was a senior project manager for Comdisco Inc. He is active in the Ramsey Baseball Softball Association, and is the softball league president and co-director of travel softball. He has also been a youth basketball and soccer coach. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and is a parishioner of St. Paul’s Church.

Platform: I have resided in Ramsey with my wife, Donna, since March 1996. I have two children, son Harry and daughter Angela. I care very much for this town and the wonderful family environment, which is why I decided to pursue a council position. I hope to work with the current administration, fellow candidates and residents to keep Ramsey a town we are proud to call home.

I look forward to this opportunity to serve on the town council with a team of professional and dedicated individuals who care about this community as much as I do. Mayor Botta and the Ramsey council members have done an outstanding job addressing many of the community needs and have an agenda to do much more. Their dedication to maintaining taxes at reasonable levels, while continuing to provide quality service that the community expects is an ongoing challenge. I look forward to working with them to address these challenges.

In Emerson, a hotly contested race for a mayoral seat and two council seats is underway, with three political newcomers facing off against three incumbents.

Mayor Louis Lamatina, a Democrat, is running for his second four-year term. Political newcomer Carlos Colina, a Republican, is seeking to unseat Lamatina.

*** and ***

Louis Lamatina* (D)

Age: 53

Educational background: Graduated from Manhattan College magna cum laude with a double major in Economics and History in 1979, received a juris doctorate degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1982

Borough resident: 20 years

Family: Married to Jeanine for 27 years; two daughters, Lauren, 18, a freshman at Hofstra University and Allison, 10, a fifth-grader at Villano School

Occupation: Attorney and principal of the Law Office of Louis J. Lamatina since 1989

Community activities: Volunteer with Bergen County’s Alternatives to Domestic Violence, softball and soccer coach

Elected positions: Mayor since 2007, Councilman 1995-1997

Why are you running? I am running for re-election to continue the progress which I began when first elected to the job of Mayor in 2006. For decades, our borough’s downtown has stagnated under both Democratic and Republican administrations. As my election occurred under a bi-partisan coalition, conditions were finally optimal for long overdue change& I have the experience, qualifications and drive to insure that the revitalization of our downtown continues.

Charles Sullivan, Widower of Former Chancellor Pat Sullivan, Dies
By Michelle Hines, University Relations

GREENSBORO — Charles “Charlie” Sullivan, husband of former UNCG Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, after a brief illness. He was 70.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Greensboro.

Staff and faculty at UNCG remember Charlie Sullivan as an avid Spartan basketball fan and a man dedicated to supporting his wife during her 13-year tenure at UNCG. He was known for his gentle good humor, often calling guests to dinner with a train whistle and rewiring circuits in the chancellor’s residence.

Sullivan was quite a capable electrician, holding both a master’s and a PhD in electrical engineering from New York University. He had a 25-year career in the corporate world with General Electric and Texas Instruments, where he worked on the analysis, design and computer simulation of semiconductor devices and fabrication technology and the development of semiconductor engineering software.

He grew up on Staten Island, N.Y., just up the block from Pat Sullivan. They met at the Manhattan Engineers Ball when he was a junior at Manhattan College and married in June 1966.

ENDNOTE: “The Simpsons”? Really! An exemplar

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/vatican-paper-lauds-simpsons-for-realistic-portrait-of-faith

Vatican paper lauds ‘Simpsons’ for realistic portrait of faith

*** begin quote ***

Vatican City, Oct 18, 2010 / 12:24 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- L’Osservatore Romano marked the 20th anniversary of “The Simpsons” in its Oct. 17 edition by lauding the popular television show for taking religious faith seriously, although often irreverently.

And, although “few know it, and he does everything to hide it … it’s true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic,” according to newspaper.

*** and ***

“The Simpsons remain among the few TV programs for kids in which the Christian faith, religion and the question on God are recurrent themes,” Father Occhetta wrote.

*** and ***

Characters are often shown praying and the Simpsons family always prays before meals. “In their own way,” Father Occhetta wrote, the character all “believe in the ‘beyond’.”

The Vatican newspaper said “Parents shouldn’t be afraid to let their children watch the adventures of the ‘little guys in yellow’.”

The content and themes of “The Simpsons” are so realistic that they could be used to kickstart discussions among parents and their children about issues of family life, school, relationships, and social and political issues.

The show’s “skeptical realism” does not lend itself to any easy moral lessons, the paper suggested. But it does tend to deflate false illusions about the world. And, the paper added, “a world devoid of easy illusions is more human and, perhaps, more Christian.”

[JR: I guess I'm going to "burn in hell". (Unless I'm already there, trying to build the Jasper Jottings readership.) I have to disagree with the Pope's Newspaper. (And, I assume every opinion is vetted before printing.) "The Simpsons" is the typical "Secular Progressive" brainwashing. Bart demonstrates the proper conduct of children towards their parents. Homer's exclamatory catchphrase "D'oh!" And the topics covered? Maybe I'm in hell already and the Devil is writing for the Pope's Press?]
