A Mother’s Love – Carries Son On Her Shoulders For 35 Years

*** begin quote ***

Xiong was brought up in three damp, dingy rooms in the Taluo mountain village, Nanpeng county, southwest of Chongqing municipality.

“But we were later told that he is deformed, which sentenced Xiong to being unable to stand up for life. Many neighbors have suggested I abandon him for his own sake as well, but how could I ever do that?” said Wen.

She said since then, she knew the child needed to be helped for the rest of his life.

“I think every mother would do the same thing.”

[JR: This tugs at the heartstrings and makes one marvel at dedication of this woman. And, woman and mothers in general. This is heroic. And, I know lots of Moms who do similar stuff. To varying degree. But it does make me wonder if I could be that dedicated?]

This is where John Fahey, chief executive of National Geographic, works, and – with a museum on its ground floor – it is a world away from most other offices in Washington DC. From the top floor, Fahey, an alumnus of the University of Michigan MBA programme, is focused on taking a non-profit scientific and educational organisation, founded in the 19th century, and trying to ground it in the 21st.

It was not supposed to be this way. As a student at Manhattan College in the early 1970s, Fahey studied civil engineering – he should be building interesting structures rather than working from them. He realised late on in his degree that it was the wrong choice.

“Conceptually, I was a good engineer. But when I had to go out and actually look at a structure and see what an I-beam looked like, I knew immediately it was not for me,” he says.

Business school was a pragmatic choice and one that paid off. Choosing where to study was straightforward: “I cannot tell you it was the most thoughtful decision-making process,” he admits. “I chose Michigan because it had a good reputation and it was a large school. It didn’t feel elitist, and to me that was pretty important back then.”

A La Recerche de ma Jeunesse perdue

*** begin quote ***

Have I told you about “Friday Night Shots?” Well, actually, it was a practice known as “Advertisement of Defects,” held every Friday night after dinner and a walk, at St. Joseph’s Normal Institute in Barrytown, NY, where I studied for the religious life as a youngster. The place was known as a “pre-novitiate,” and consequently all the students were “sub-novices.” And Friday nights we all got our comeuppances. All the sub-novices would take their places at their desks in the common room, and the Brother Director would sit facing us at a desk on a raised stage. He would rap on his desk with a metal object…(a pen or some such thing,) and each time he rapped, one of us would stand, and would remain standing while all the other students took “shots” at us, telling what was wrong with us. When it was my turn they usually told me I bragged too much. (among other things.)

Well, it was probably true. And by your leave, I’m going to brag a bit right now, but I’ll try to keep it short, or at least amusing.

*** and ***

Well, long story short, things continued like this pretty much. After graduating high school in Barrytown, I decided not to enter the religious life and I came home to the Bronx and I went to Manhattan College. There was this math professor at the college that we called “Batman.” I so impressed Batman that Batman shadowed me everywhere, trying to convince me to major in math. I didn’t see much sense in doing so, since it looked like the only thing you could do with math was get a job teaching math. “Batman,” by the way, was so named because he was a Christian Brother from France, and in France the Christian Brothers wore capes. In America, no capes.

Jennie Fanshier has seen it all — from the horse-and-buggy days to the era of jet airplanes. She’s even taken a helicopter ride with her grandson, Ron Koelsch. On Monday, Fanshier celebrated a milestone few will reach: her 110th birthday.

Staff and residents at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center marked the occasion with cake after being serenaded by the Great Bend High School Jazz Band and Ellinwood High School’s Mystic Blues choir.

“Welcome to my 110th birthday,” she said. “One hundred … and 10 … years old!”

The wedding dress and high-top lace-up shoes she wore when she married Henry Fanshier on June 4, 1921, at St. John were on display at the front of the room. Seeing the treasured dress, she pointed it out to a friend. “My sister made it,” she said.

“During World War II tires and many other supplies were rationed. Lightning struck our garage, burning the building and car. We needed transportation so managed to buy one at a ‘black market’ price. Robert enlisted in the service from Manhattan College. He was overseas for more than two years. After the war he returned to college, got his degree, and taught G.I.S. on the farm program. As we worked throughout the years, we prospered with the help of a little oil under our land. Great Bend also prospered with the oil boom. In 1945 the farmers got electricity. I could scarcely believe the changes in our lives: electric stove, refrigerator, lights, radio, hot water, followed by a TV. Who could ask for more?”

*** and ***

In 1994, she wrote a brief autobiography, noting these and other events, including her husband’s passing in 1973.

“I asked the doctor what is keeping me here,” she wrote at age 94. “He replied, ‘It’s your sense of humor.’”

“Joy comes to all ages — the love we hope to keep, the bonds uniting us and ours together. Always. — I will finish with love and a hug.”

JObit: Johnson, Charles D. [MC1949 RIP]

http://michelinemaroni.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/chuck-johnson-former-whli-dj-and-politico-dead-at-80-by-micheline-maroni/

Chuck Johnson, former WHLI DJ and politico, dead at 80 BY MICHELINE MARONI

January 26, 2010

Love blossomed at Hempstead radio station WHLI the day news writer and announcer Chuck Johnson, then 30 years old, met music librarian Judy Ricci, then 20.

They married in 1958 after 10 months of dating. And they were just four months shy of celebrating their 50th anniversary when he died, at age 80, of congestive heart failure Sunday at his Bethpage home surrounded by his family.

“Everybody who knew Chuck got to experience the phenomenal man he was,” said his wife, Judy Johnson.

Charles D. Johnson was born in Larchmont on Feb. 20, 1928. He attended Fordham University before earning a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from Manhattan College in 1949.

After serving in the U.S. Army, working in the intelligence division, Chuck Johnson combined his degree and love of entertaining and landed jobs in radio.

Johnson captured listeners by impersonating famous people like Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable and the Kennedy brothers, Ted and John, said his son, Matthew Johnson of Bethpage.

He was also a gifted writer and poet. After JFK’s assassination, Johnson shared a story he wrote about the late president on the air, said Judy Johnson. And that rerouted him into the world of politics because it caught the ear of then-Nassau County Democratic Party chairman Jack English. Johnson started as a public relations person in 1960 for the Town of Oyster Bay’s then-Supervisor Michael Petito.

He retired in 1998 as deputy supervisor for Oyster Bay Town serving under then-Supervisor Lewis Yevoli.

The Johnsons’ neighbor of 25 years and fellow Democrat Angela Mellody said she used to love discussing politics with him. “Chuck was always a delight,” Mellody said. “He had great stories.”

Although Johnson was an important man at work, relatives said he was equally as important at home. Judy Johnson remembered her husband changing diapers, taking the two boys to sporting events and chauffeuring their two daughters.

“He would do anything for you,” Matthew Johnson said.

Chuck Johnson was also the president of the Little Midget football team in Bethpage, known as the Bethpage Panthers, and was an avid bowler, said Matthew Johnson.

Most of all, his son said, he looked forward to watching reruns of “The Honeymooners” with his father and going for weekend breakfasts together.

Besides his wife and son Matthew, he is survived by daughter Vickie Knauf of Orlando, Fla., son Christopher Johnson of Patchogue, daughter Jen Farahat of Lynbrook and four grandchildren.

After today’s 11 a.m. service at Arthur F. White Funeral Home in Bethpage, he will be buried with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.

You’ve met the idiots that will be standing next to me on the groom’s side of the church, lets take a look at the other half. Once again, I used the worst possible photos I could find of these people on facebook.

Maid of Honor – Kerry

Kerry is one of the fiance’s two sisters and also currently attends Manhattan College, which is the school the fiance and I attended back in the day. I was under the impression that the maid of honor was supposed to be pretty involved in the wedding planning, but I have yet to get one memo from her, and she also refuses to takes notes when asked.

Since Kerry is a fellow ManColl attendee, more than half of the people in the wedding party (five out of eight) will be Jaspers. This is great news if you are a fan of people who have lived in the Bronx for an extended period of time, but bad if you are a fan of people who had a well-adjusted college experience.

Life in the “Blah” Zone
Nicole Marie

*** begin quote ***

It’s funny–my cousins were playing this basketball video game on Christmas and in the game there are college teams. When they were playing against Duke University, the stands were packed in the game. The Duke students were cheering like crazy. My cousin Sal said it’s like that in real life. I told him to try playing against Manhattan College in the game, since he and I both go there and I wanted to see how the game portrayed us. It showed the Draddy gymnasium, and the stands were…well…the students seemed sporadically placed around the gym. Kind of sparse in comparison to Duke.

It seems like an accurate portrayal.

I’ve noticed this on my campus a lot. Events are planned–good events–by student activities, and yet, there’s a low turnout. Not that many students come–I guess it gets worse as the semester wears on (maybe for the Spring semester it’s the opposite?). Either way, I notice this just in the basic student attitude just walking around campus. I guess one plus side is that a lot of people at Manahttan are pretty chill. There seems to be a good mix of different personalities, thus making it sort of “normal.” But the chillness isn’t supposed to be taken to the extreme. I do come across some people from time to time that are passionate about SOMETHING. Like, say a sport, or student government, or art. But, for the most part, I often think I see a “sea of blah” walking around campus. A majority–maybe 60%, maybe more–seem to have no drive outside of the normal, the mundane.

*** end quote ***

[JR: I watched the recently televised Iona game and the stands were half full. Where's the Sports Marketing Majors? Can't even fill up the stands with students who can walk there? Advertise to the Alums in Jasper Jottings. Have to solve some problems to be like Duke! Parking, notification, cost, "fun"!!! I used to work with a Dukie. They were organized. He'd get three different phone calls a week from his alumni mates: one for his year of graduation cell, one from his major cell, and one from the first letter of his last name cell. No wonder they fill up the stands. He was called to go to a Duke Women's Event in the Garden and went; he didn't know what it was but he was going to have "fun". Argh, that is what we need. Fun! Bodies!]

Dear John,

I read the attached post about attendance at Manhattan Basketball games. This season student government started the “Jasper Jungle” section at the games. They issued “T” shirts and encouraged the students to wear them at the games. It seemed to catch on. One problem was that a few of the home games were scheduled while the students were off on the winter break, and that effected attendance. Of course the less than stellar record of the team this year has to have an effect as well. But at least some are trying to increase attendance.

[JR: Glad to hear that. The game I watched on TV was during school and sparsely attended. Maybe my favorite Marketing Prof can make it a class project. Price, Positioning, and Promotion. Price: Maybe a coupon for 10% off at the Green Leaf? :-) Positioning: Free parking outside of the gym? Or, LOL, a "Best Male Jasper Dancer" contest? ROFL, free shirts for alumni? Perhaps, it could be such "fun" that the team's performance might not be a big deal. Like rooting for the Cubs?]

Manhattan College started sports blogging at GoJasper dot com. Therefore, there was no need for me to fulfill that niche. (Can’t believe the athletic department pays someone to do that for them?)

You mentioned MC in your blog so I featured it in Jasper Jottings. http://jasperjottings-daily.com/

Just obscene. Any group that allows such degradation is missing half of their humanity. Don’t ask if evil still exists – it is here.

>Any group that allows such degradation is missing half of their humanity.

We can’t “punish” them, BUT, (there is always a big butt), our political class doesn’t have to reward them with access to our banks to hide their loot, our stores to spend their ill gotten gains, or our entertainment venues to idle away their time. That’s why I like PNGing them. A lot like how my Mom sent me to my room to clean it up with orders “not to come out until it’s done”. Similarly, we should send them to their “room” until it’s cleaned up.

World War II veteran, 89, died in a fireball caused by ‘almost unbelievable’ sequence of coincidences
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 12:11 PM on 14th January 2010

*** begin quote ***

An inquest heard today that a box of matches – which Mr Baines kept for lighting candles at church – had probably fallen out of his pocket as he bent down to start the mower.

The great-grandfather then stood on them, creating friction which sparked the matches and ignited the petrol vapours and fuel on his clothes.

When he rushed in a panic into the passageway – where was forced to keep the mower after thieves stole his previous one from the garden shed – the fire was fed by petrol spilt on the floor.

*** end quote ***

[JR: A tragic story from the UK. Overlooked is the crime angle. Criminals changed his behavior. At the Final Judgement, will they be called to account? One can only hope. And, we must take care not to allow out common sense to be over-ridden by silly gooferment failures. He was supposed to be protected.]
