HE WAS AWARDED the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Congressional Gold Medal. Scores of universities conferred honorary degrees upon him. Research institutions on three continents were named after him. He was greatly honored, and for good reason: He is reckoned to have saved more lives – hundreds of millions, perhaps a billion – than any man in human history.

Yet until last weekend, when he died at 95, you could have asked 1,000 people at random, and chances are 998 of them would never have heard of Norman Borlaug. Almost as many would likely never have heard of the “Green Revolution’’ Borlaug spearheaded – the spectacular increase in agricultural productivity he first achieved in Mexico in the 1960s and then worked to spread through much of the Third World. Instead of the worldwide famine so confidently predicted by population alarmists of the time, Borlaug’s agricultural miracle sent wheat and rice harvests soaring, outstripping the growth in population. The result was a world in which food became more abundant and affordable than it had ever been.

But Borlaug had seen too much of hunger ever to be cowed by such censure. The complaints of his well-fed Western detractors would vanish, he said, were they to spend just one month among the world’s poorest and hungriest people. Man may not live by bread alone, but he must surely die without it. Because Norman Borlaug lived, hundreds of millions of human beings were spared that terrible fate.

[JR: He solved the technical problem. Now we need to get the corrupt gooferments out of the way. Where are the folks who are going to take today's "insolvable" problems, ignore the Doomsday pundits, and just solve them? American ingenuity is in our "genes". Even if those "jeans" just stepped off the boat! That's why we need to end welfare; it just demotivates people. We need to end the drug war; it just imprisons us and rewards our enemies. We need to downsize the gooferment; it just weighs us down. Then throw open the "golden door" to all those dirty folks yearning to be free. That's been America's "secret". Free people from their shackles and stand back. They will surprise everyone. Sometimes even themselves. Let's stop strangling the proverbial "golden goose"!]

still has her nasty cough, especially at night, and it progressed enough that I asked the leukemia team if there was anything we could give her other than the home remedies we were trying. They OK’d her to use a nebulizer twice a day to help relieve the cough. It has helped some, but there is still a way to go. Otherwise, doing well.

[JR: OK, Jaspers, do we have a coughing prayer in our archive? With children in these heroic battles, there are no "small problems". These are the times that try ... And, we can throw one in for all the parents of sick children everywhere. It's has to test one's faith.]

Thanks for raising a sensitive and important issue. The Church is losing / has lost it’s flock for a myriad of reasons. The sex scandals are clearly one. There are others; among them:

They continue the ancient practice of treating women like second class citizens. This concept is so out-moded that it probably dates back to cave men, when might meant right . .. or at least survival.

They treat gays like third class citizens, or worse. They seem to say, “You can be one, or feel that way, but just don’t act on it, ever.”

They fail to recognize that modern marriage is a 50 / 50 proposition at best. Huge numbers of divorced Catholics are left in the Church’s no man’s land.

Not content to rail against pre-marital sex, they became the only church I know of who took on sex WITHIN marriage, which made that aspect of the flock’s lives conflicted, miserable or both.

They adhere to celibacy as a requirement for the priesthood, and continue to exclude all women, even as the number of vocations plummets.

They are irrelevant. Sunday Mass — and much of the other liturgy — is pure rote. The weekly opportunity to really connect with the flock is typically lost.

Neither sermons nor the public pronouncements of the hierarchy rarely tackle modern issues — raising kids, famuily life, addiction, joblessness, divorce, etc..  

They tend to be “in bed” with the Democrats, but typically will not call them out on abortion. Do they just “have preferences” or do they really “stand for something?”

That’s my perspective. There are many other opinions, on both sides of this issue.

[JR: I am saddened at the loss because "the Church" was the serf's refuge from "the King". We have no institution to help in the fight for freedom. And, "the King" likes it that way. Makes one wonder if it's a problem with "organizations"? Too big. Too political. Too stupid. Far beyond this injineer's abilities to fix. Thanks for the support of a great email.]

The fourth Bishop and second Archbishop of Saint Paul was H. E. Austin Dowling (1919-1930). He was born in New York City on April 6, 1868, to Daniel and Mary Teresa Santry Dowling. On April 19 was baptized, and given his Christian name Daniel Austin. Not long after, his family moved to Newport, Rhode Island. At Newport, he was a student at the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy. Dowling attended Manhattan College in New York City, and graduated with his A.B. degree with high honors in 1887.

Dowling made his theological studies at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, and at the Catholic University. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1891. Afterwards, he worked on his graduate studies in theology and church history at the Catholic University.

After serving as a pastor in Warren, Rhode Island for a year, Dowling went to the Brighton Seminary where, for two and a half years he taught Church History. History was always a passion of Dowling. Marvin O’Connell stated that he was “a man who was by taste, habit and profession an historian; he could not set about finding solutions to problems facing him until he examined those problems in the light of the past.” Even his sermons as Bishop of Des Moines and as Archbishop of St. Paul were mainly of an historical character. He was one of the first to welcome the creation of the Catholic Historical Review, and one of the first life members of the American Catholic Historical Association.

Later, in 1896, Dowling spent two years as editor of the Providence Visitor, and became one of the better known catholic editors in the United States. Afterwards, he was assistant at St. Joseph’s, Providence, then Pastor of St. Mary’s, Warren and then Rector of the Providence Cathedral. In 1912, the Holy See elevated Dowling to the See of Des Moines, Iowa as Bishop. His peers saw the action as recognition of his talents, while Dowling felt as if he was being sent into “exile” in the West.

Dowling had a fine intellect and excellent organizational skills. As Bishop of Des Moines, Dowling was appreciated for his courage, simplicity, kindness, and especially his commitment to education. He founded a Catholic college in Des Moines.

In 1919, Dowling was appointed to be Archbishop of Saint Paul, Minnesota. In his address at his installation on March 25, 1919, Dowling described himself as “the unknown, the unexpected, [and] the undistinguished successor of the great Archbishop Ireland.” In the decade that followed, Dowling had many accomplishments, including: The establishment of the Archbishop Ireland’s Education Fund. The improvement of St. Paul Seminary. Being on the board of Education of the Catholic National Welfare Conference.

During the last years of his life Archbishop Dowling’s health was seriously impaired because his heart was not functioning normally, and the resultant circulatory disorders gave rises to complications which brought him to death’s door on several occasions. During the summer of 1929 he collapsed while on a confirmation tour and a critical illness resulted. For a time he recovered to the point that he was able to walk on his own, but pneumonia soon set in. Dowling lapsed into unconsciousness four hours before his peaceful death in the late forenoon of Saturday, November 29, 1930, at his residence on Summit Avenue, directly across from the St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Brighton: Died October 9, 2009, at the age of 73, after a long struggle with Lewy Body Disease. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2006 and his parents, Daniel & Mary (Quigley) Ryan. Survived by his four children by his first wife, Patricia: daughter, Patricia (Dan) Goodman of Collingswood, NJ; and sons, Daniel Ryan of Silver Spring, MD; Dr. Stephen (JoAnne) Ryan of Pittsford, NY, and Sean (Kim) Ryan of Kensington, MD; grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Hale; Matthew, Andrea, Neil, Joseph, Shannon, Kelly & Brooke; great-granddaughter, Jianna; sisters, Eileen Williams & Margaret (Richard) White; brother, Edward Ryan; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Daniel was born in Flushing, NY, the third of four children. He graduated from Manhattan College and New York University with degrees in Engineering. He worked on system design for planes, mainframes and the WDC Metro fare card system. In his retirement he was a hike leader for Sierra Club, wrote plays for live theatre, videoed for public television, gardened, and competed in seniors’ softball and volleyball. He traveled to six continents and always loved to learn about other cultures.

A special thanks to the staff of the Memory Care unit at the Jewish Home of Rochester who loved, cared and supported him for the last 10 months.

CONCANNON, JOSEPH P.

Dr. Joseph P. Concannon died September 29, 2009 at the age of 92. Dr. Concannon was the former Director of Radiation Oncology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he worked for 23 years. He also served as clinical professor of radiation therapy at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After retiring from Allegheny General Hospital in 1982, he founded and was president of Triangle Radiation Oncology, which provided the sole radiation oncology services to a number of hospitals in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, until his retirement from the practice of medicine in 1989.

He authored over 85 significant publications concerning cancer treatment and cancer research. Holding numerous fellowships in nuclear medicine, he served on and led a variety of committees and task forces related to radiation therapy, immunology, and chemotherapy. Dr. Concannon was the founding force behind a cancer research center established at Allegheny General Hospital. He worked on a committee for radiation therapy studies at the National Cancer Institute and reviewed applications for research support for clinical neutron radiation therapy programs at Tufts Medical College, University of Washington, M.D. Anderson Hospital, and George Washington University. Dr. Concannon also served as a guest examiner for the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Concannon was a founding member and a fellow of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology (ASTRO), and a founding member of the American Club of Radiotherapy and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians of London. He was also former President of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Pittsburgh. In addition, he was a member of numerous medical societies, including the American Radium Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Concannon earned his undergraduate degree from Manhattan College before going on to the University of Buffalo, where he earned his degree in medicine. He completed an internship at Jersey City Medical Center and residencies at Buffalo General Hospital and at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. A veteran of World War II, he retired as a major of the US Air Force Reserve.

He was married for 56 years to Dr. Bernice G. Concannon, also a radiation oncologist. They met during his fellowship at the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute in Manchester, England. She died in 2006.

Born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1917, Dr. Concannon took immense pride in his Irish roots, both of his parents having immigrated to the United States. He read voluminously and traveled globally (especially to India, where he consulted with and mentored numerous radiation oncologists). He enjoyed both golf and boating.

Splitting each year between Falmouth, Massachusetts and Gainesville, Florida in order to spend time with his family, he was a devoted grandfather, delighting in providing career guidance and help for the older children and bonbons for his youngest, toddler grandchild.

Dr. Concannon is survived by his four children and their spouses: David (Susan) Concannon of Alexandria, VA; Mary (John) Oldak of Bronx, NY; Paul (Susan) Concannon of Atlanta, GA; and Peter (Tricia) Concannon of Gainesville, FL; and five grandchildren: Thomas and Brian Concannon of VA; John and Delia Kate Oldak of NY; and Rose Ellen Concannon of FL. A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, October 3 at the Saint Thomas Chapel, Falmouth, MA.

I heard from the Rev a few days ago. As those who follow this posting know, the Rev. is the exquisite editor and fine human being Jeff Canning, late of the Journal-News desk. He was smart enough to get out of that sad place while the getting was good.he

The Rev also is a careful, talented historian and one of the real experts about the history of the Lower Hudson Valley, most notably The Tarrytowns, now Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

He also took a guest shot at teaching journalism at this alma mater, Manhattan College, and for reasons beyond understanding, he recommended this blog as one to read. Thanks, Rev., although I’m not sure this one is updated often enough to capture attention.

And, though nobody asked me, if one of you admin types at Manhattan College is reading this, you could do a whole lot worse than have the Rev on your faculty teaching journalism.

Louis Sanchez, PE, of Orangeburg, NY, passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2009, with his family by his side.

He was born in New York City on October 31, 1939.

He is predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Norma and Dora.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Barbara, and children and grandchildren, who he loved dearly: son, Louis and wife, Julie of Wallkill, NY, son, Lance and wife, Jackie of Hoboken, NJ, daughter, Lisa and husband, John of Yonkers, NY, five grandchildren: Jaime, L.J., Isabella, Ewan, and Lucas, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree, majoring in Structure and Mechanics. He completed graduate studies at City University of New York 1964-1966, majoring in Structures. He got his Professional Engineering License in 1970 and had his own firm, Sanchez Associates PC in Great Neck, NY, for over 25 years. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering for Practical Seismic Design of Structure, a member of the American Concrete Institute, and a member of the Rockland County Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers. He received an Engineer of the Year Award ‘94-95′. He was licensed as a Professional Engineer in the states of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Colorado.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and uncle, who will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held Friday, October 16, at 11 a.m., at St. Catharine’s Church, 523 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY. Visiting hours will be Thursday, October 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Moritz Funeral Home, 98 Route 303 South, Tappan, NY (845-359-0890).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Hospice of Rockland (845-634-4974) or the Alzheimer’s Association (800-272-3900).

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Hundreds of thousands of pro-life students are ready to stand in solidarity on abortion as the Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity takes place a week from Tuesday. Last year, from over 4,700 campuses in 25 countries participated in the event and sponsors expect even more this year.

The day sees the students at middle and high schools and on college campuses wear pro-life t-shirts, sport red tape on their mouths to show how the unborn can’t speak up, and the distribution of fliers educating students and the public about abortion.

The event’s man sponsor, Stand True Ministries, tells LifeNews.com, one of several groups supporting the event, that at least 58 young women canceled appointments for abortions after the special day took place last year.

Bryan Kemper, the pro-life group’s president, says students are always excited every year to bring attention to the devastating travesty of abortion that is killing 4,000 unborn children and injuring women every day.

Personally, I wonder if we have allowed the "abortion" of the gal who would cure cancer, the boy who'd break Jeter's record, or the next Gandhi who would bring us the "world peace" as often wished by beauty contest participants. The German people have never recovered from the shame of what was done to the Jews. Will we be regarded the same way? Will future generations look at this, askance, like the Salem Witch Trials? And, now with the supposedly "health care" bill, we're going to get abortions regardless of the consequences. Will this be the issue that splits the nation? Will this be the long awaited "revolt" of the silent majority. Will your taxes be paying for what you find morally abhorrent? What will you do about it?]
