Poor economy drives down New Jersey divorce rate
by Joseph R. Perone/The Star-Ledger
Sunday August 09, 2009, 8:55 PM

*** begin quote ***

Couples in New Jersey are divorcing at a lower rate this year as the recession takes its toll on family finances and raises the cost of splitting up.

The number of new divorce cases filed during the first six months of the year fell 9 percent — to 28,579 — compared with the same period a year ago, according to the latest figures from the state Administrative Office of the Courts.

*** end quote ***

A small gift. A chance to perhaps reflect on the decision. The possibility of avoiding the disaster?

One can only pray.

PrayersRequested: A Jasper’s child could use some relief

*** begin quote ***

She continues to get oral chemo every night with a second chemo on Wednesdays. She tolerates it well enough most of the time, but gets nauseous in the mornings about once a week. Her tummy issues aren’t obsolete and she often has pain, constipation and bloating, but are manageable enough with Miralax.

*** end quote ***

[JR: OK, my fellow Jaspers, we need some prayers for “constipation”. While it may sound flip, this is a little child we are talking about. So, I think we should be willing to try anything. And, if it impacts one Jasper’s child, it must impact many children. So, I’m for trying anything. Besides, doesn’t MC have a specialty of “sanitary engineering”?]

Peter J Dolan

MILLBROOK – Admired and respected as a national and international business man, a generous and loving husband, father and friend, Peter J. Dolan died suddenly on Friday, August 14, 2009. Raised in Harlem, New York by Irish immigrant parents, Peter’s steadfast work ethic and honest approach were his trademarks. Peter started his business career (as a young child) in his father fish store, understanding the importance of hard work and ethics in the marketplace. Graduating from Manhattan College’s Business School in 1949 and earning his MBA from Columbia University in 1954, Peter became a CPA and partner in Arthur Young & Company (now Ernst and Young Company) – the first Irish Catholic to be a partner. At EYC, he not only became one of the top Managing Partners for the New York Metropolitan Office, but he also became the National Director of Industry Programs, leading the firm on the management of information systems, finance and accounting systems, and strategic planning. Peter’s consulting work helped many domestic and international companies. After retiring from EYC, he started his own firm and among his major clients were Springer Verlag USA and Universal Matchbox Ltd. However, it is his tremendous volunteer effort (transcending the public eye), which will be one of his lasting legacies. Routinely, he helped organizations as well as individuals by providing them with insight, direction and purpose. Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Dolan, of 59 years, his seven children (Robert, Eileen, Kevin, James, Betsy, William, Mary), his eight grandchildren and his two great grandchildren. His generous spirit, indomitable conviction for justice and honesty, his drive to be the best and his unquestionable love are instilled in all who have come to know him. Calling hours are on Saturday, August 15, 2009 from 7:009:00pm and Sunday, August 16, 2009 from 1:00-4:00pm, at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, New York. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2009, 11:00am, at St. Bridget’s Church in Sharon, Connecticut. Huge Turnout for Ellen’s Run
By Jack Graves

*** begin quote ***

Befitting the giddiness of the day, Bob Teschak of Granite State Race Services, who oversees the Mount Washington Road Race, whose 50th anniversary is next year, was unable in the aftermath to come up with anything other than the winner’s name, Todd Raymond, who crossed the finish line in 17 minutes and 19 seconds.

Later, however, it was learned that Raymond, a 25-year-old New York City resident and Manhattan College graduate, who ran the 3K, 5K, and steeplechase there, waits tables at the Saint Ambroeus restaurant in Southampton Village.

During a conversation Monday, he said he’d registered online, and that when he came to get his number on race day, there’d been a foul-up of some sort. Since it was his first race here, “I ran the first mile in five minutes, testing the waters, but nobody came with me, so I treated it as a tempo run after that. I could have pushed more, but it was hot. . . . I hung around for about a half-hour, and then I had to go to work.”

Hi John,

I received word that a friend, John McKenna, died three days ago, possibly Sunday or Monday. I know he was a Manhattan graduate and was interested in the track team, but I have no idea what year he graduated. I think he was in his late 70’s. He didn’t seem to have any close family, ergo I don’t know who was in a position to write an obituary. If you come across one let me know. I checked the NY Daily News and the NY Post but didn’t find anything.

JHQ: U.S. News & World Report Ranks MC’s Engineering

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/082009_1.shtml

August 20, 2009

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Manhattan College’s School Of Engineering Among The Best In The Nation

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – U.S. News & World Report has ranked Manhattan College’s school of engineering among the best undergraduate engineering programs in the nation. The College’s ranking appears in the print and online versions of U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 Edition of America’s Best Colleges released this week.

Manhattan College’s school of engineering earned a peer review rating of 2.9 and was ranked tied-42nd among engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s.

U.S. News ranks only undergraduate engineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The rankings are based solely on a peer survey that consists of deans and senior faculty who rate overall programs and best programs in various specialties. Thirty-eight percent of the individuals surveyed returned ratings.

In the Best Universities-Master’s (North Region) category, Manhattan College ranked 17th, up from tied-19th a year ago. The College received an overall score of 61 (on a scale of 100), an increase of three points.

The Best Universities-Master’s category includes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, but offer few, if any, doctoral programs. The 572 universities in the category are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West – because they tend to draw students mostly from surrounding states.

The 2010 America’s Best Colleges package provides the most thorough examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of 15 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and graduation rate performance (national universities and liberal art colleges).

Tash shows moxie in leading Lady Wreckers to success
By Eliot Schickler

*** begin quote ***

Becca Tash shows a lot of determination on the lacrosse field. A senior tri-captain for the Staples High girls lacrosse team before graduating in June, she leaves the program as a two-time First Team All-FCIAC selection, a 100-plus career goal scorer and the first player in the program’s history (or at least in this decade) to sign a letter of intent for a Division I school. She was also a First Team All-Stater this year, a Second Team All-Stater and the Block S Team MVP junior year and Second Team All-FCIAC sophomore year.

*** and ***

Next week, she will be leaving for Manhattan College and major in marketing there. She’s definitely going to play lacrosse for Manhattan and knows she’ll have to raise her game to the next level because she’ll face bigger, faster and stronger opponents. “I have to learn a lot,” says Tash. “It’s a different game with players and coaches. I hope to listen a lot and learn new things.”

Comment: “Key West Lou” (MC1957) remembers Petrera, Matteo [MC1957]

By pasuale petrera

thanks for the great memories of my dad. you were right on the mark in your description of him ,and his neverending knowledge of all things continued throughout his life. He and my mom raised a fine family of three–Tony, a pharmacist; Teri, a radiologic technologist; and myself, an orthopaedic surgeon. He instilled a great sense of family and tradion into his children and was most proud of all their achievements. But most of all he said his greatest accomplisment was that in 73 years of life he rarely missed church or receiving the eucharist. Clearly his Manhattan College education played a large part in his and our success. Thanks

ENDNOTE: Abortion expansion is in the healthcare bill

Dean on Palin’s health care claims: ‘She made that up’
Posted: August 9th, 2009 02:48 PM ET
From From CNN’s David deSola

*** begin quote ***

She discounted the administration’s view that the president’s plan would cut health care costs, saying the only path to lower costs was less treatment. “And who will suffer the most when they ration care?” she wrote. “The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’ so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their ‘level of productivity in society,’ whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.”

*** end quote ***

Sorry for the D’s. And even sorrier for the Catholics In Name Only in congress like Ted Kennedy who support abortion.

Talk about a culture of death, end of life counseling and expansion of abortion are both in the bill. I know I’ve read parts of what have been provided.

It’s hard to imagine that America has fallen this far into Socialism and the culture of the Secular Progressives.

When “they”, the supposed liberals, took over education, they won the war. They get to brainwash everyone.

Luckily Catholics, and those of us who went to Catholic school, may not have drunk their “Kool Aid”.

Murder is wrong.

It’s always wrong. And, must always be opposed.

When do we stand up for our beliefs? When they are loading us up into the railroad cars?
