Want to keep your wallet? Carry a baby picture
Hannah Devlin
*** begin quote ***
When faced with the photograph of the baby people were far more likely
to send the wallet back, the study found. In fact, only one in ten were
hard-hearted enough not to do so. With no picture to tug at the
emotions, just one in seven were sent back.
According to Dr Wiseman the result reflects a compassionate instinct
towards vulnerable infants that people have evolved to ensure the
survival of future generations. “The baby kicked off a caring
feeling in people, which is not surprising from an evolutionary
perspective,” he said.
Scientists argue that it would be difficult to genetically code for
feeling empathy exclusively towards your own child and much easier to
code for feeling empathy towards all children. If you find a baby
alone, there is a good chance it belongs to you, making it an effective
evolutionary trait, said Dr Wiseman.
*** end quote ***
42% return rate for the planted wallets.
Humm, what would I do?
I’d like to think that I’d be honest and go out of my way to help. But I know I’m a sinner!
Interesting that there is something in our “hardware” or “software” that empathizes with babies.
Finding one alone, fat chance. The gals are usually all over “the
baby”. I think the “wiring issue” is more obvious
with them.
May all your challenges be as big as you need. I’ll take my “small”; thank you, very much.

Mercurio remains optimistic about free baseball school
JASON STROMBERG
Forum Publishing Group
July 30, 2009
*** begin quote ***
Not much has changed for John Mercurio in recent weeks. The Deerfield
Beach resident still wants to open his free baseball school for kids,
but he needs $1,000 to pay for field fees, another $1,000 for insurance
and an additional $700 to buy equipment.
So far, no donations have been delivered to the baseball historian, who
is looking to sign up 30 to 38 players who are going into their
freshman year of high school.
{Extraneous Deleted}
A member of the 1957 Manhattan College
team that won the Metropolitan Championship, Mercurio plans to keep
records of the fastest time running the bases, the fastest time around
one lap of the field, the most home runs and RBIs, highest batting
average and most strikeouts by a pitcher. He needs 30 players on
average to make his roster. That would allow him to field three teams
with each made up of eight position players, a starting pitcher and one
extra hurler.
{Extraneous Deleted}
Mercurio’s motto in baseball and in life is: Never make the same
mistake twice. A physical education major with 60 consecutive years of
baseball and softball playing experience, along with 20 years in the
umpiring business, he is asking for donations to help foot the bill for
his school.
All ballplayers from the Palm Beach and Broward County areas looking to
help Mercurio continue his dream of teaching kids how to play baseball
and get opening day under way are asked to write to Mercurio at 545
Trace Circle #101 Deerfield Beach, FL 33441.

Thoughts from an ex-fetus
George Jonas, National Post Published: Wednesday, June 03, 2009
*** begin quote ***
Living in an epoch that is selfish as well as matriarchal, our
lifeboats are no longer marked “women and children first,”
only “women first.” We invent euphemisms, such as
“choice” for killing, and sophomoric dilemmas, such as
pretending not to know when life begins, to ensure that nothing hinders
Virginia’s quest for Santa Claus. No obstacle must interfere with
her goal of self-fulfillment — least of all an issue (as it were)
of her healthy sexual appetite.
*** end quote ***
Yup, we have a society that is killing its babies. I can’t
envision a more contra-survival behavior. As a little L libertarian, I
instinctively distrust the gooferment to have any role in what must be
an intensely personal and troubling decision. That being said, we have
to, as a society, deicide a better way. Clearly, the right to life
begins when the fetus aka baby can survive on their own. We have
mastered technology to push that point back further and further. Add to
that the problem of who pays for what. And, you have a mess. We need to
sort it out. FAST!
Principle #1: Life is sacred. Principle #2: Women have rights.
Principle #3: The gooferment is the worst venue to decide this since it
only has one size fits all solutions.
