LOS ANGELES — As she walked from a post office, Talon Curtis thought she’d found one of those gimmicky sweepstakes offers on the ground that scream something like “$357,959.55″ in big bold letters and “This is not a real check” in much smaller type. But just as she was about to do her part for a cleaner planet and deliver the paper from the parking lot to a trash can, she noticed it was a real cashier’s check with a real signature.

Terrence J. Fitzsimons

Terrence J. Fitzsimons Terrence J. Fitzsimons, age 70 of Danbury, beloved husband of Anna Marea (Fox) Fitzsimons, died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, at Danbury Hospital, Friday, May 15, 2009. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., December 12, 1938, son of the late Peter and Alice (Collins) Fitzsimons. He was a graduate of Manhattan College. Mr. Fitzsimons worked as a banker for Chase Manhattan in New York for more than 30 years. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Danbury and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an active man who loved going to the Cardiac Rehab Center at Danbury Hospital and walked four miles a day. He also enjoyed traveling to Ireland to visit family. A devoted family man, he will be sadly missed by his wife, Anna; his cherished son, Colin Michael Fitz-simons of Danbury; and his sister, Margaret Fitz-simons of Danbury. He is also survived by his cousins, James Dunne and his wife, Gloria, Alice McMahon, and Andrew Dunne and his wife, Patricia; as well as many cousins in Ireland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 18, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Danbury. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, Sunday, May 17th between the hours of 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 p.m. Memorial Contributions in his memory may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Danbury. Teaching Style

I always enjoyed teaching. I often was able to teach high school English classes part-time even while I served as college advisor and Guidance Director in 2 different private high schools. I especially liked English literature. It was challenging to get teenage boys to like literature, so I often used videos & other visual aids to help them understand and enjoy reading good literature.

Experience Summary

I always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in the upper grades of grammar school. After attending a private high school on scholarship, I earned another scholarship for university attendance. After graduating, I taught for 9 years in elementary schools. I taught part-time for the next 14 years in a private high school, and also served as college advisor. Since 2003, I have been teaching adults in driving classes part-time.

Hi John:

At long last, my book Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners will be shipped by the Publisher Rowman and Littlefield to the warehouse and then to distributors on May 20th. It looks at the portrayal of Christians and Christianity in almost 200 films from 1905 through 2008. If we’re lucky, Turner Classic Movies will devote a number of films to the theme in December. I’ll keep you posted.

I am turning my attention to a book about my late wife to be written with our four children and another about my high school La Salle Military Academy which closed after more than 100 years of existence in various iterations in 2002. I visited the LSMA archives at Manhattan College last week and found most of the 32 boxes to be unidentified. I am hoping that come October when the archivist Amy Surak is back from maternity leave that more work will be done sorting them out.

The story begins in the 1830s, when word got back to the French religious leaders of the day that the French Catholics in New York were leaving the church in droves. Unwilling to sit through sermons in English, they opted to attend French Protestant services or not go to church at all. Alarmed at this trend, the Archbishop of Nancy preached a mass in French at St. Peter’s on Barclay Street, urging the French to establish their own church, like the Germans and the Italians, had in order to strengthen their community and family ties, and create a visible link to France for their rapidly Americanizing children. The French heeded the call, and by 1841 the French had their own church on Canal Street, St. Vincent de Paul. In the 1850s, the parish moved to its present location in Chelsea, on West 23rd Street.

The pastor of the church was Annet Lafont, a French priest from the order of the Fathers of Mercy, a French Missionary order. By all accounts, he was an extraordinary leader. He founded orphanages in New York City and Tarrytown, homes for the elderly and young women’s residences, and what is now known as Manhattan College grew from his parish school. Chronically short of funds, he accomplished all this, it seems, from sheer force of will.

Father Lafont, however, was not content simply to mind his own flock. In a document celebrating the centenary of the Fathers of Mercy, we are told that “Father Lafont was moved by the truly pitiable condition of the Negroes in New York. They could hold no real estate, were permitted in no public vehicle or place of amusement, and when traveling, they had to use a special car which was little better than those for cattle, and they suffered many indignities and acts of oppression.” Though this list of sociological and legal facts gives us an indication of the poor conditions in which Blacks lived in this city, nothing is more startling than reading eyewitness accounts of the mental and physical violence they daily suffered. In an 1846 letter to Paris describing life in New York and the work of Father Lafont, a Frenchman, Henry de Courcy, gives us just such a first hand account of daily life in the antebellum years:

Richard Phillip Lesko

Richard P. Lesko of Waldwick passed away on Friday, May 15, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. The family will hold a remembrance service at his home on 100 Crescent Ave., Waldwick, on Monday, May 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Richard was born on Sept 17, 1925, and attended Manhattan College for engineering at the early age of 16. On weekends he played saxophone with his Uncle Bill to raise money for his college tuition. His college days were cut short when World War II broke out and Richard was drafted into the Navy. He proudly served as a seaman first class and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return he graduated from college and began a very brief career as an engineer before deciding to pursue his passion as a professional musician. His career highlight came when he toured with Mary Martin in “Peter Pan.” The Waldwick community will also remember him as the beloved “Mr. Dick”, a role he cherished as a teacher at the Crescent Nursery School started by his mother, Jane (Fecica) Lesko in 1954. Here he found his true calling as the ever smiling teacher of music and life lessons to the myriad of youngsters who attended the nursery school. Richard, one of eight Lesko siblings, is survived by his sister, Barbara Vasil of California and many, many nieces and nephews.

Commissioner Kelly congratulates Manhattan College graduates

Manhattan College’s graduation ceremony was also a celebration of the school’s president, Thomas Scanlan, who is leaving his post later this year, after 22 years.

The speaker at the ceremony was New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, who graduated from the school in 1963. In a copy of the speech provided by the college, Mr. Kelly spoke both about Mr. Scanlan’s accomplishments, such as increasing applications to the school by 120 percent, raising SAT scores of those accepted by 100 points, and what he called “a wholesale transformation into a residential college and one of the premiere institutions of higher learning in the country.”

Mr. Kelly also spoke directly to the more than 700 graduates, urging them to stay true to the school’s core principles.

“They are manifest, Brother Scanlan, in your vocation, handed down from the Christian Brothers through generations of Manhattan graduates: a commitment to service, social justice, and the dignity of every human being,” Mr. Kelly said.

FRANCIS J. KUZLER — EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

For over ten years, Frank has been writing, directing and producing independent film and theatre. A strong believer in the development of new talent and the expression of new ideas, Frank has built the foundation of his career developing projects that come from new voices and have a fresh and unique perspective.

He was most recently a producer on Rain, the first independent feature to be indigenously produced in the Bahamas. Currently playing the festival circuit, Rain has been called a “trailblazer” sure to lead the way for new voices. Other film credits include 2004’s uncompromising film After The Apocalypse by Japanese filmmaker Yasuaki Nakajima which was called “a triumph in independent filmmaking,” and which received acclaim in over 30 international film festivals.

As a theatre producer, Frank is the Managing Director of the award-winning Boomerang Theatre Company, a staple independent theatre company in NYC’s Off-Off Broadway world. During his tenure, the company has received several awards for its productions, notably NYIT’s 2008 Caffé Cino Award for Outstanding Independent Theatre Company. He has also written and produced several shows that premiered in the NY International Fringe Festival, the largest multi-arts festival in North America.

Frank is currently working on two documentary films (Burning to Communicate: A Retrospective History of the Beginnings of Off-Off Broadway; and New Land New Life, a look at the mass migration behind Hurricane Katrina and other large scale human movements) through DecadesOut as well as a feature film, The Orange Cyclist, a story about reconstruction after tragedy through his multimedia company DedPro Inc.

He holds a BA from Manhattan College in English literature, a Juris Doctorate degree and is a member of the New York State Bar.

He stayed at a Catholic orphanage on Staten Island, N.Y. until he graduated from high school in 1953 and went to college. In 1960, he co-founded Micro State Electronics Corp, later becoming president of it as a subsidiary of Raytheon. In 1972, Sie joined Jerrold Electronics Corp, a subsidiary of General Instrument Co., as Sr. Vice President of the CATV division. In 1977, he joined Showtime Entertainment as Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing advocating the then revolutionary idea that people would be willing to pay for more than one premium cable channel. In 1984, Sie joined Tele-Communications Inc., as Senior Vice President in charge of strategic planning, programming, marketing, technology, and government relations. He pushed cable operators to pool their money and buy programming that would be attractive to much bigger audiences than the 30% of US households they were then getting. Most industry professionals thought he was insane but when the NFL agreed to air Sunday games on ESPN in the same year it increased cable viewer ratings tenfold. In 1993, he founded Starz Encore, pioneering theme channels and subscription video-on-demand, now mainstream concepts of the cable television industry. Sales neared $1 billion yearly by the time he retired as President and CEO in 2004.

Philanthropy: The Anna and John J Sie Foundation supports the sharing of knowledge amongst peoples and cultures in the global community, with emphasis on media, business, technology, and education. The foundation is a supporter of the Starz Film Center, the University of Colorado’s “The Sie Family Down Syndrome Break-Through Research Initiative”, the Denver School of Science and Technology, the Denver Art Museum, and the Festival Italiano. Sie also sits on the Board of Trustees for the Denver Art Museum and the University of Denver.

Alice Elizabeth Cross

CROSS, ALICE ELIZABETH, passed away on Wednesday May 20, 2009 at the age of 66. She was born on October 19, 1942 in Staten Island, NY to the late John and Alice O’Brien. Alice was involved in education her entire life, both as a student and as a teacher. She graduated from St. Joseph Hill Academy, Staten Island, received a BA from Mount St. Vincent University, a MA from Manhattan College, and her EdD from Nova Southeastern University. As a teacher for over 38 years enjoyed teaching at Volusia County Public Schools, and cherished her years at Deltona Lakes Elementary School as well as Pine Ridge High School and Deltona High School.

In her retirement Alice enjoyed substituting at Leesburg High School to have contact with our youth, “our next generation of leaders”. Through-out her career Alice received many awards for her achievements in education, and was also very active in various PTA organizations on the local and national level. She enjoyed traveling, camping, reading, and worked very hard to promote environmental causes.

She is survived by her husband Alexander A. Cross of over 38 years, two sons Alexander (Melissa) Cross of Bradenton, FL., and Jonathan (Toni) Cross of Wesley Chapel, FL. She is also survived by four grandchildren, two brothers Kenneth O’Brien of Staten Island, NY., and Timothy O’Brien of Dingmans Ferry, PA. as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother William O’Brien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Leesburg with Fr. Mark Wegg officiating. Friends and family may call at the Page-Theus Funeral Home on Monday May 25th. from 5-7PM. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials in Alice’s honor be made to Cornerstone Hospice or am Environmental Club of your choice. Page-Theus Funeral Home 914 W. Main St Leesburg, FL

SHIELDS, Randolph “Randy” 81, of Spring Hill, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2009 at Hernando-Pasco Hospice Care Center in Brooksville. Born in New York, NY on Feb. 5, 1928. He was a graduate of Manhattan College, a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea and worked as a business risk manager for the McCoy Corporation. He was also a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church and a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus St. Jude Council in Spring Hill. Randy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Shields of Spring Hill; 1 daughter, Susanne Fraser of Lindenhurst, NY; 4 grandchildren, Erin, Brendan, Sean and Jonathan; also many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 25, 2009 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Grace Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 16931 U.S. 19, Hudson 727-863-5471. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 10 am at St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, Spring Hill. The bride, 37, and the bridegroom, 44, work for the City of Long Beach, N.Y., where she is the assistant city manager and he is the commissioner of public works.

The bride graduated from Columbia and received a master’s degree in administration, planning and social policy from Harvard and a master’s degree in journalism and public affairs from American University in Washington. Her previous marriage ended in divorce.

She is the daughter of Patricia Harvey and Dr. Stephen Hirsch, both of Lido Beach, N.Y. Her father is a urologist at Island Urological Associates, a division of Integrated Medical Professionals, in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Her mother is the billing director and the office manager for Radiological Associates of Long Island in Oceanside, N.Y. The bride is the stepdaughter of Jeanne Hirsch and Harold Harvey, both of Lido Beach.

The bridegroom graduated from Manhattan College, from which he also has a master’s degree in environmental engineering.

He is a son of Mary T. Mulligan and Thomas J. Mulligan of Mahwah, N.J. His father retired as the president of HydroQual, an environmental engineering and consulting firm in Mahwah, N.J.

NEWPORT, Maine (AP) – An unemployed woman who won $1 million in a Maine State Lottery game has collected her winnings – four years after she bought the scratch ticket in a store that’s since burned down. Brenda Ripton told the Central Maine Morning Sentinel that she had received her $700,000 check from the lottery on Thursday.

Ripton had just learned two days earlier that she won the million-dollar prize in the Texas Hold ‘em game. The government took the rest of her winnings for taxes.

Ripton said both she and her husband are out of work. Her winnings came in a second-chance lottery in which non-winners fill out the back of the ticket.

It took this long to declare winners because the state had to sell all of its Texas Hold ‘em tickets first.
